the afternoon. so you may look a little crazy going out the door this morning with your heavy winter coat but you'll be happy you have it later on. right now the last of a little rain drops across far southern maryland. if it's not raining at your house now it probably won't be. today it's all about the tumbling temperatures but as we head toward the weekend, since that's the most important part of any forecast, especially on hump day, how about mid 70s on saturday and a rain chance on the second half of the day on sunday. that's the easy part of the forecast. for the tough part let's go over to sheena. >> we are going to see these temperatures dropping because that cold front has to move through the area and it already has movered through part of the area. hagerstown now 40 degrees. so hagerstown is dropping. feels like the 30s there. the winds are picking up making it feel colder. frederick is at 50. so that cold front right on the doorstep of frederick. we'll be getting colder there soon. gaithersburg at 46 but it will be getting

40 degrees by 7:00 a.m. good news, roads are going to be dry but those winds will be increasing as we go through the morning. look at those 40s this afternoon. speaking of the roads and your commute, let's check in with melissa mollet. >> good morning. so a couple of things to talk about still. just as far as road work goes. rock creek parkway north of virginia avenue, the left lane there getting by that bridge work in each direction and the other long standing situation in d.c. northbound, 295 there near benning work zone blocking the right lane. taking a look, a wide look here at the beltway, all of the routes into and out of town, we look generally very good. 95 southbound just after the beltway so i took a look here at a live picture. not seeing any major slowdown. could be a glitch on the map there. 5:01 now. covering montgomery county, the horrifying rape of a 14-year-old girl by two classmates is getting national attention. the white house commented on t

an undocumented immigrant. >> parents with teenagers at rockville high school say that school that brings -- that fact brings another layer of concern to an already disturbing crime. we're live outside the school now with more on the changes parents want to see right away. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. parents had an emotionally charged meeting with the school's superintendent last night and they heard promises about better security coming including updating the unrenovated area of the school where that 14-year-old girl was repeatedly raped in a bathroom. but that just wasn't enough to reassure them. >> there are a lot of moans and groan from the parents. the superintendent, i thought, did an absolute terrible job. >> a lot of frustration. i think there's poor security

thing a lot of college students are doing this time of year, hanging out with friends during spring break. >> police say 18-year-old was shot in a parking lot monday night in northeast washington doing just that. she was home from st. augustine university in north carolina for spring break and was watching a rap video being filmed when someone pulled out a gun and fired several shots. her loss is heart breaking for her father. >> i just miss her warm smile, the close relationship that we have. >> this is the second homicide to affect his family in an unrelated case her cousin carington carter was murdered four months ago outside of an apartment complex in capitol heights. both cases are unsolved. developing now in northeast d.c. a person was found unresponsive. they found that person yesterday afternoon. you can see from the video here that by nighttime police had

right now this is being called a death investigation. police have not said whether the person is a man or a woman. it's now 5:05. we want to check in at the live desk. a new missile launch out of north korea. what's this about? >> north korea attempted a missile launch this morning but u.s. and south korean officials say it failed almost immediately. this is a day after the north warned of a potential pre-emptive strike after a test of the weekend of a new advanced rocket engine. this video that we're showing you is of a recent launch. andrea mitchell asked rex tillerson if he thought north korea's threat of pre-emptive military action represented dangerous escalation and he had no comment for her. back to you. now to the president's first 100 days where today president trump will meet with maryland congressman anthony brown and other members of the congressional black caucuses executive committee. they hope to discuss several issues with t

colleges and universities and health care. and time is running out for republicans trying to secure votes on the replacement for the affordable care act. the house votes on that issue tomorrow. the president is already warning house republicans they could lose re-election in 2018 if they don't vote in favor of the american health care act. we'll take a look at the chances the bill will pass with tracie potts in our next half hour. it is round two of questioning today for judge neil gorsuch. he sat through just over 11 hours of questioning yesterday. he stressed his independence from mr. trump and said quote, when anyone criticizes the honesty or the integrity or the motives of a federal judge i find that disheartening. public witnesses are expected to testify tomorrow. they are the second longest escalators in the western hemisphere and today all five of the escalators at the bethesda metro station have officially

impacting how much people care about their health. there has been a huge rise in the number of women screened for the breast cancer gene according to the journal of breast cancer medicine. angelina jolie understood underwent a double mastectomy. women who have bris implants may be at risk for a rare form of cancer. the fda is now checking into more than 350 reports linking cancer to silicone and saline implants. the cancer is a type of non-hodgkins limb fymphoma. most cases are treated with removing the mass. students at ross elementary school now have a new tool to

around here, but 41 the windchill in gaithersburg now. 32 the windchill in martinsburg. so it will feel much, much colder here before too much longer. so the cold impact then for this afternoon, quite chilly. strong winds. winds gusting 25 to maybe 35 or so miles per hour this afternoon. falling temperatures, windchills will be many the 30s all afternoon. so just know that it will not be a pleasant day to be outside. by tomorrow morning, a hard freeze is coming. the wind will lay down after the sunsets this evening but we could be below freezing for four to six continuous ours down at national airport. so that means the cherry blossoms may also be impacted by that. as far as rain chances all the rain chances are down across far southern maryland. we will be dry all across the d.c. metro today but by tomorrow morning be ready for a real drop in temperatures down to about 27 or 8 at national airport. 22 by tomorrow morning in

carolina. back to you. it's 5:34 right now and a bowie man was murdered while vacationing in florida. his body was found near an elevator. the 26-year-old was found by a coworker he had traveled with for a jazz festival near miami. he says brown had returned to the hotel early to go to bed. police are now reviewing the surveillance hoping to track down his killer. there is a new effort to solve a democratic national committee staffer's murder. he was shot and killed in blooming dale last summer. police believed it could be a robbery gone wrong. now his brother has created a go fund me page to help solve this case. it's raised $5,000 with the goal of 200,000. the funds will help the family maintain public awareness of the case

and a fake news line you may be seeing pop up on your facebook page. it was created by a group who backs gillespie's rival. it claimed he supported removal of a statue of robert e. lee. he says that is not his opinion. jesus house d.c. wants to build on 15 acres along new hampshire avenue. the plan includes a sanctuary large enough to seat 1,600 people but those who already live near that area feel it will bring even more traffic to their neighborhoods. >> they want a school, they want the church, they're talking about a playground, they're also talking about a ball field, parking for all of those folks so it's going to be massive. >> some neighbors are also worried about the environmental impact of building that new ch.

that the church plan meets current rules and regulations and they've worked to minimize impact to the community. well, helping others really can pay off. a virginia woman was rewarded for her good deed with a lotto jackpot. >> we say it's good for the soul but good for the wallet too. she was showing a friend how to use a self-service scratchoff machine when she won the big jackpot. thomas was helping her friend use the ticket scanner at a fredericksburg giant. then she realized heret ticket s worth $1 million. thomas says she is still, in her words, freaking out. wouldn't you be too? >> it's $12 she didn't have before she bought the ticket. right? >> that's sweet, aaron. >> it's a win-ish. all right. a kidnapping attempt caught on camera and this is video you want your kids to see. what this young victim did right just ahead.

amazing video out of massachusetts. a man fell on the tracks of a train station and within moments people jumped down to get him to safety. that man saudi he was drunk at the time. he hurt his ankle but of course this could have been a lot worse. lucky guy. all right. this next story will hopefully remind parent to have an important talk with your young children. >> this incident happened in a busy walmart parking lot in florida. a ten-year-old girl says this man tried to lure her into his car on sunday. it was caught on

right now at 5:45, reagan national innovations. new details about how the construction is coming and how it will change the way you check in for flights. >> plus, a scramble on capitol hill. the clock the ticking on the republican plan to replace obamacare. what's holding some from getting on board. and it is the talk of the town. today plans for a new wegmans in the works. where the chain could be setting up its newest shop. 15 before the hour and today we'll learn more about the changes coming to reagan national airport. >> we're live with a look at what all of this will mean for travelers. justin, good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. soon flyers can go right from the metro stop here into a tsa check point line.

new experience in many ways here starting with just getting inside. now, this is a design overhaul that calls for moving those tsa check points from the national hall main area and based on new renderings those check points would move downstairs across from the metro station entrances on reagan's lower level. that would put the national hall area behind security check points. the plan here to ease crowding at reagan would solve more than 20 million travelers last year. closer to the runway, a new commuter terminal is in the works to replace those 14 outdoor boarding spots where passengers are bare to the elements all year round before boarding their flights. demolition for that project is set to start just next month. as you can see, passengers making their way into their flights this morning. that will all change for them in perhaps four years. now combine these two projects, it will cost more than a half billion dollars and next hour another look

also what it means for ticketed and nonticketed passengers. more on that coming up. back in to you. >> justin finch live for us at reagan national. thank you. and today metro marks the completion of one of its biggest escalator project. all five escalators at the bethesda station have been replaced. it took three years. they won't be open until after a ceremony this afternoon. three of those escalators are the second longest in the western hemisphere and drop down ten stories. >> metro transit police want you to be on the lookout for this man. take a look. he's accused of touching a person inappropriately during the height of the rush hour on monday night. investigators say it happened on the orange line near the clarendon station. if you recognize the man or if you spot him on the trains today, call authorities. a man who was illegally strip searched by a police officer will receive $125,000. he has been fighting for

that's when a laurel police officer forced him to pull down his pants and underwear in a cvs parking lot during a traffic stop. to this day the department denies the strip search took place. the officer remains on the force and has since been promoted. the sheriff's office has yet to say what led it to charge two men in the death of heather sacon. deputies say these two men are charged with first degree murder. both have long criminal histories and according to our news partners at wtop both of them were already locked up when the new charges came down. she was found shot to death in her car in december of 2015. the 21-year-old was just about five miles from her home. a place where her sister says she was the force that kept the family together. >> it's been hard. i mean, heather was the glue to our family and now

you know, it just -- it's not altogether. >> at this point authorities have not said whether she knew the suspects. it is 5:49. today former vice president joe biden will return to capitol hill to rally with democrat to save the affordable care act. they will also celebrate its 7th anniversary. this comes one day before house republicans plan to vote on a bill to replace it. right now the big question is whether republicans will have enough votes to pass the bill. >> the latest count shows at least 27 republicans are either voting no or leaning toward voting no. tracie potts is live on capitol hill for us. if this bill fails tomorrow, what's the next step? >> reporter: well, the next step is going back to the drawing board on the house side or waiting for something from the senate side. it would clearly be a huge defeat for the trump administration. the white house has already said this is it. this is their chance to get rid of obamacare and you've seen the nus,
