few hours as investigators try to piece together what happened in london and why. >> what happened is becoming clearer, but why is still the question. the sun has set now on london. for dozens of people and their families, it turned out to be a life-changing day. we're covering all angles in london and here in washington. >> let's get to the live desk. wendy, can you bring us up to speed? >> it appears the incident on westminster bridge that happened at the parliament were carried out by the same person. british police saying they are satisfied there was only one attacker. but they're still taking precautions across the uk. this afternoon, we learned more about the casualties british police say three people are dead, two on the bridge, and then a police officer at parliament, the fourth is the attacker. at least 20 people are injured, including several other police officers. investigators also gave us a better idea of how it happened. they say the attacker used

car to mow down people on the bridge. he then crashed into the gate outside of parliament where he exited his vehicle with the knife and stabbed the police officer before he was shot and killed. witnessed described, as you can imagine, a chaotic scene this morning. >> running, running. and i didn't know what's happening. i just got a little further and i see the one car smash through the wall. and people started running all over. >> british intelligence says it is using the full weight of its intelligence service to investigate this. we also know that president trump continues to get briefings and has been in touch with british prime minister theresa may. back to you. >> thanks. you know, all of this is coming one year to the day since an attack in belgium. a year ago this afternoon, we were telling you how two suicide bombers detonated explosives inside the airport in brussels. the terrorists set off

bomb at the same time inside a crowded metro train. today, survivors and victims' families marked it with a ceremony. 32 people were killed in that attack, and isis has claimed responsibility. the attack in london is on the minds of security officials here in washington. a spokesperson from the u.s. capitol police tells us they, quote, work very closely with law enforcement partners and monitor national and world events to provide the level of security required to protect the capitol complex. also on capitol hill today, supreme court nominee neil gorsuch is well into the third day of his public confirmation hearing. and democrats lawmakers continue to express frustration with the conservative judge from colorado. california senator dianne feinstein said gorsuch avoided specificity in his stance on abortion rights and other matters like no nominee she's ever seen. gorsuch promised to consider all

school deals with a rape case involving undocumented ingrnts. now, there's a request to deploy more police officers on campus. chris gordon is live at the school to explain what police are saying. >> reporter: in the past hour, a spokesperson for montgomery county public schools told me that the principal here at rockville high school reports receiving several telephone threats throughout the day. now, the principal notified police, which sent cruisers to patrol the grounds of the school. this comes after two students were charged with rape and sex offenses. one of the suspects has an undetermined immigration status. according to i.c.e. the other is a juvenile, so i.c.e. won't discuss his immigration status. today's telephone threat were made against what the caller referred to as, quote,

both the victims are women. one of the victims, an 18-year-old college student who was home for spring break. someone shot and killed ayana mcalister last night. it happened on benning road near east capitol street. also yesterday, police found a woman stabbed to death inside an apartment just a couple blocks off the busy h street corridor. that's where we find news 4's pat collins. what have you learned? >> reporter: well, it's been 24 hours, and police investigators are still working this murder scene. i want to draw your attention to the flyer and the picture of the car here that belonged to the victim that's missing and police want to find it. it's a 2004 toyota prius. it's blue. it's four doors. it has kentucky tags. 722 rmy. and take a look at this diagonal diamond-like sticker on the bumper. it says watch out for motorcycles.

find this car. find the killer. she was found tied up and stabbed to death in the basement apartment of this northeast home just off the fashionable eighth street corridor. the victim, 34-year-old corinna mehiel, an art professor here in washington working on a project at the corcoran. where she was last seen alive sunday night. her body discovered yesterday after she failed to show up for work. >> was there any sign of any forced entry into that house? >> at this point, we don't have any indication of a forced entry. >> do you know how long she may have been dead before she was found? >> that we don't know. at this point, but as i said, we do have information to suggest that she was seen alive on sunday evening. >> corinna mehiel was associated with nationally renownedis

service confirms there's been a fourth security breach at the white house, all in the last few weeks. just before 11:00ast night, someone tried to jump over the fence on the southwest corner but the person got hung up and stuck on the top of the fence. officers arrested the climber and charged him with unlawful entry, and the secret service is credited the security features on top of the fence for helping to stop the suspect. recent breaches have not changed the current timeline on plans to raise the fence and add other anti-climbing features to it. officers arrested jonathan tran for allegedly jumping the fence on march 10th, and then a man from virginia was accused of telling a guard he had a bomb in his car at the white house security checkpoint on saturday. police also arrested william rawlings, a man from silver springs, from jumping a security barrier at the white house on saturday. new at 4:00, the three men

northern virginia gun shops faced a federal judge just a short time ago. a special agent with the atf testified in court that preston holmes, matthew jones, and daniel quoral took 35 weapons from 50 west armory in chantilly, that happened on march 11th. three days later, prosecutors believe they tried to hit two more gun stores in fredericksburg. over the past weekend, agents caught up with the trio and took them into custody. the trouble is they only found one of the nearly three dozen guns stolen. >> it's crunch time for lawmakers as a health care plan impacting millions of you hangs in the balance. why we still don't know what could happen over the next 48 hours. >> also, how are the cherry blossoms looking after the rough wintry weather last week?

retailers, of course, amazon. and a new regulatory filing today, the company says there is, quote, substantial doubt that it will be able to keep its doors open. sears has lost more than $10 billion since 2011. the last year it turned a profit. earlier this year, the company said it would close an additional 108 kmart stores and 42 sears locations. kohl's also is looking for ways to maintain a strong competitor to online and brick mortar stores. at a retail conference the ceo said the company needs to change faster to stay in the game. we were talking about staying in the game really means the social media aspect of all this. some of the stores, i mentioned nordstrom, they're really good at social media. target is really good at it, going after the age group. and in sears and kmart, they're just kind of lagging behind.

the city of charlottesville has three weeks to respond. the sons of confederate veterans and 11 others filed complaints about plans to move it. the lawsuit claims the city went beyond its authority, violating a state law that prohibits removing statues of war monument. >> they act in violation of the law, just recklessly disregarding state law. that's a dangerous precedent for all of the citizens. even though who are in favor of removing the statues. >> charlottesville city leaders say they are not going to comment on an active lawsuit. >> a for sale sign is going up at an historic building in arlington. today, the county board authorized selling reed's farmhouse which was the last dairy farm. they failed to find a financial partner willing to take part in the restoration. a buyer would have to maintain the site's

the puffy white stage. what does that mean for peak bloom? it's likely to happen this weekend, and looking to the forecast, you can see here, those 70s on saturday are really going to help to bring out the blossoms. and then hopefully the rain chances sunday, monday, and tuesday won't bring the blossoms off the tree. if you're planning on making a trip down to the tidal basin, i would plan to go on saturday. the pollen report with this cooler air in place, low. trees, grasses, weeds, and molds release air, but the allergens will likely start to build up toward the end of the work week and into the weekend. maybe an isolated shower around on friday. breezy for the afternoon. highs in the low 60s, mid 70s on saturday. mid 60s on sunday. maybe some rain later in the day. guys, with the latest information coming in, it's looking like most of our weekend really mainly dray. again, most of us under a severe drought. doug will have more on that in the 5:00 hour. >> thanks. you know that big fat 76 is the perfect jumping off point to tell you you can enjoy free
