new information about what happened before those shots. and drugs showing up on your doorstep without you even knowing it. the news 4 i-team shows how criminals are trafficking drugs by mail. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. >> montgomery county remains at the sencenter of a nationwide debate on immigration tonight after the rape of a girl in a high school bathroom. >> two threats were called into the school today. news 4's meagan fitzgerald is live in rockville with new details. >> reporter: according to the superintendent, there have been a number of changes made here at rockville high school today. for one, an increased police presence after a number of calls and threats have been made to the school during school hours. >> we had some phone calls to different

about harming immigrant students. >> reporter: one day after angry parents attended a meeting at rockville high school with the superintendent and principal, the school reported receiving a bomb threat and a call from someone saying they wanted to bring guns to shoot the quote illegals at the school. we caught up with superintendent dr. jack smith before a county budget meeting. >> we certainly have heightened security across our system. and it's just unacceptable to threaten any student, no matter what their status. >> reporter: the concern surrounding immigration status after two high school students raped a girl in a bathroom during school hours. one of the suspects, 18-year-old henry sanchez illegally entered the country from mexico back in august. but vetting students as some parents have suggested is something dr. smith says is against the law. >> our students that are here, we are going to take good care of them. we are going to increase our

everything is secure in all of our schools. >> reporter: though today, montgomery county officers were seen patrolling the campus after the threats were called in. the superintendent also says staff members were told to take attendance each period and to keep track of how long students with hall passes are out of class. >> there is a bit of a question, a concern, i'm going to say. >> reporter: concerns among students will likely linger for a while. but school officials insist that students are safe. dr. smith says students and parents can expect additional safety measures put in place in the coming weeks. >> meagan fitzgerald. in the district, police are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting right now. the man who was hot shot is in critical condition. shomari stone is live at the scene. >> reporter: police just took down the crime scene tape that was behind me m

scene and they are interviewing witnesses. here's what we know thus far. police chief peter newshum says officers responded to a 911 call on the 4300 block of barnaby street. they saw a man with a gun, there was a struggle, and one of the officers shot the suspect. medics drove the suspect to the hospital. i spoke to commissioner paul tranthumb. he was told that the suspect was on drugs and an officer told him to drop the gun before the shooting happened. chief newshum says he cannot confirm that, it's still under investigation. we also spoke to a woman who lives in the building next door. you live on the other side of the yellow crime scene tape. you're trying to get home. what's going through were your mind right now? >> i'm trying to figure out what's going on. looks like somebody got shot in the next building. it's our building. >> reporter: right now police say the suspect is in critical condition. they have not released his name. ascii tai as detail the become available, we will immediately update you on our app. i'm shomari stone, news 4. just in the last 15 minutes, d.c. police have sent us a picture of a person of interest in the killing of an artist, found bound and stabbed to death in the district. here is the photo, from a convenience store in beltsville, maryland. yesterday, police discovered cornea neil in an apartment building. she was last seen sunday night at the corcoran school of the arts where she worked. police tell us there were no signs of forced entry at her apartment. her stepmother talked to news 4's pat collins on the phone. >> caller: she lived her life so fully. she

quote, this is washington, d.c. odds are never good. the top democrat tells nbc news there is more than circumstantial evidence of collusion between trump campaign associates and russian operatives. congressman adam schiff's announcement comes hours after the gop chair of the committee says communications from the trump transition team and possibly the president were legally and incidentally collected by u.s. intelligence. congressman devin nunez briefed the president and the media on that information but not the other members of his committee. >> the chairman will need to decide whether he is the chairman of an independent investigation into conduct, or he's going to act as a surrogate of the white house, because he cannot do both. >> nunez again today repeated that president obama did not wire tap trump tower.

street corners. possibly on your block. inside a mailbox. like the case of takesha cole who's seen here delivering more than just magazines and bills. a drug runner was paying her $50 a parcel to deliver marijuana to his home. he'd leave her an envelope with cash in the mailbox in return. >> it is difficult for law enforcement to deal with. >> reporter: investigator neil frank len says dealing drugs by mail is more common than you might think and also more dangerous. >> if a partial package is delivered, it's left right at the front door. anyone can get ahold of it. >> reporter: it is illegal to mail marijuana and other drugs across state lines. and at the postal inspection service, they investigate these cases. they declined to be questioned on camera, so we pulled some of their search warrants. they look for certain states of

origin, arizona, california, and colorado and washington. they look for heavy taping of packages, and they look for these u.s. postal service click and ship labels, often used by businesses but also used by drug dealers to make drug shipments look like legitimate shipments. the feds launched more th than 2,000 investigations into u.s. mail last year alone and seized 35,000 pounds of marijuana. the court filings we pulled showed postal inspectors sought permission to seize 100 suspicious packages since october. >> that's clearly something we're interested in prosecuting. >> reporter: including in virginia. former acting u.s. attorney general dana boente says it could be smarter to make a sale by mail. >> they view it as safer, less of a chance of getting caught, because they don't have it on

>> reporter: federal search warrants says marijuana by mail often use invalid addresses, sometimes a vacant or neighboring home and avoid implicating his own home. >> we don't know how they picked your name. this may be a good spot. >> reporter: that's what happened to this former mayor a few years ago. they listed his wife's name and their home address in an effort to ship illegal drugs. >> they invaded the home of innocent people. >> reporter: there are internal auditors who found they failed to lock up and secure parcels suspected of containing marijuana. and nearly half they checked last year failed to do the same. by october of this year, they'll create nationwide guidelines for better handling of these suspicion packages. >> takes a lot of resources, a lot of money, a lot of manpowe
