reeni sandler showed them video of a girl being beaten up in the main lobby. her client was pulled, punched, kicked in the head. the school says they're taking steps to address the fighting. but it doesn't inform the community after every altercation. outpouring of emotion for a local college freshman who was gunned down while on spring break. yesterday family and friends of iyana mcallister packed the gym. they shared stories of the 18-year-old who was going at school in raleigh. on monday night she was killed in d.c. while she watched some people record a rap video in northeast. no one's been arrested yet. >> i am forgiving whoever killed my baby because it's not going to bring her back. but what i am saying is if you're dealing with guns, if you got a shady lifestyle, i'm going to need you to do something with your life. >> this family has had a devastating few months. this i

if you need to take amtrak to anywhere north, things should be getting back on track after a minor derailment. yesterday an express train heading for d.c. partially went off the tracks as it pulled out of penn station. it scraped the side of an arriving new jersey transit train. there were no serious injuries. but some passengers in new york and new jersey may experience delays and cancellations today. we're gathering more details about the prime suspect in that deadly london attack. the saudi arabian embassy said khalid masood visited saudi arabia three times and taught english there for two years. police say masood killed four people in the heart of london. this was near the parliament building this week. one of the victims was

>> nbc's kristen dahlgren shares his mission to protect and serve. >> reporter: for ferrera, becoming a police officer is a dream come true. >> since i was little i was always out playing cops and robbers. >> reporter: he was always one of the good guys. after 9/11 the immigrant became a u.s. citizen so he could join the marines. it was in afghanistan that all of his dreams almost ended. >> i landed on a 30-pound ied which amputated my legs below the knees. >> reporter: he lost his knees but never his spirit. he started playing for the wounded warriors softball team. and in 2015 on the way home from his wedding rehearsal, he saved a baby in a smoking car. it seemed serving was still something he was meant to do. so today he became one of the country's first double amputee police officers. no special passes. as a recruit he had to run a

this, the shred it opportunity, so to speak? >> well, fairfax county in particular has nine shredding events every year. we start in march and go through october. this is the one that we do in coordination with northern virginia community college and nbc 4. so this is really a bigger one. it's a regional effort. the ones that we have throughout the year are just for fairfax county residents. >> how important is this? why should people come out? >> well, if they like free shredding, they're definitely going to come out. it's a great way to protect your secure documents. they do a great job here of getting your documents out of your car and shredding them securely so that you don't have to worry as much about identity theft. >> kathy, as we have you with us this morning, we know the loud hum of all those shredders is tough to listen through.

but we appreciate the effort. why have something like this on campus? why is it important to you all at northern virginia community college? >> you know, nova is a big part of the community here. i start getting calls november and december asking when the shred is going to be. hour neighbors really look forward to this event. it's important to them and therefore it's important to us. so we're very happy to do it. we're happy to work with all state and the country and all of the other different layers of people that make this happen. >> and to both of you -- or either of -- how can people find out about upcoming shred events. >> they're all posted on the fairfax county.gov website. so go there, look for recycling. that will tell you the dates for all the shredding events for 2017. >> erica and kathy, thank you so much for your time this morning. and we want to remind folks as you can see behind the two of them the lines are growing.

here. this is from arkansas. there are trees lying in the road. mobile homes were thrown off their foundation, some even flipped over. a lot of bad damage there. at one point this morning, 20,000 people didn't have electricity because of the storm. a couple of people were hurt, but we're told they should be okay. >> opioid abuse and related deaths becoming a major issue in virginia. the state health department just releasing new figures and they show the number of deaths increased in many counties. let's give the breakdown for our area. this grooes to january to september of 2016. arlington county had 12 deaths. fairfax county, 52. and loudoun and prince william counties both lost over 20 people to overdoses. we now know the terms of a plea deal for a man kused of opening fire on a d.c. restaurant. edgar welch pleaded guilty to assault charges and bringing a gun from north carolina and

on connecticut avenue. police say welch told them he was investigating a fake news story about democrats and child sex trafficking. he will be sentenced later this year. today the faa will be investigating a tragic plane crash. this happened outside atlanta and the plane slammed into a home. only the plane's pilot died. no one on the ground or in the home was hurt. but you can see that dark smoke right there rising from above the crash site. this was last night. witnesses say they saw the plane start to spin moments before it went down. cause of the crash still unknown. larry hogan says he will veto an education bill. the protect our school act would limit how low performing schools. it would also prevent actions like trying to change schools to private charters. it is a response to the every student succeed act. about school accountability. hogan says the bill gets in the way of improving failing schools. let's stay in

where very soon fracking could become illegal. there's a bill moving through the general assembly. according to "the washington post" it could be signed into law as early as next week. fracking is that controversial way of getting oil or gas from rocks deep in the ground. opponents including governor hogan say it's bad for the environment. so you may have come across this. it was really one of the most popular stories on the nbc washington app. we notice it's been shared several times. it's about debunking a fake report that 14 girls went missing from d.c. in just one day. >> this is important. a lot of false information floating around out there. so d.c. police told us they're simply just sharing more missing person cases more often on social media. take a listen though center for missing and exploited children. here's what they had to say. >> we're not seeing -- the reports what we're hearing about significant increases in missing children. what we're seeing in d.c. is not

do. >> reporter: so far this month d.c. police have tweeted out 17 fliers of the missing kids between the age of 10 and 17. most have been found. the head of youth and family division reached out on facebook to address what has been a large story. katherine came home. things are complicated. there are issues. her mother says she's run away many times before. katherine won't say where she was. but says many of the missing teens in d.c. simply want out. >> they're leaving. they don't know what they're looking for. they don't know what they're trying to find. >> that's all parents want is for them to pick up a phone and say, hey, i'm all right. >> reporter: a mother of four, katrina is the first to tell you she and her daughter katherine have a long road ahead. but at least they are together. in the district, kristin wright,
