>> it feels really nice. it is officially that time of the year. the cherry blossoms for whatever is going to constitute peak blooming period, it is happening now. it started on saturday and we r keeping them -- i took these pictures yesterday by the tidal basin. what looks really nice from afar, that same tree when i took a closeup picture, these are not in shadow. these are the frozen cherry blossom petals. you can see the weeping cherry tree under the 14th street bridge. look at that. 20 or 25% of the blossoms able to hold on after all of those freezes. between the rain drops today and wednesday, thursday will be your last best chance to see what we have. there's another chance of rain on friday. today though we're tracking chances for rain. thunder showers down across central virginia are likely to move in here for the second part of the morning commute. for more on that and a talk on temperatures, let's go over to

cluster chuck was showing you a moderate to heavy rain to move in shortly before lunchtime or late this morning. i would say around 9:00, 10:00. getting closer. near charlottesville. temperature wise, aaron mentioned how warm it was. 61 in the district. 56 dulles. if you're walking the dogs today, we have one available for adoption, this guy right here. if you are walking the dog today, looking for a dog to walk, well, it's going to be one of those days where you need the rain coat. keep an eye to the sky. limit it because we have lightning in the forecast with the thunderstorms. by noon today 67 degrees. that's when we expect the bigger area of rain and thunderstorms to move in through the evening though, 74, scattered thunderstorms have the umbrella with you all day long and speaking of kind of a wet commute for this evening, let's go over to melissa mollet. good morning. >> going to be a little yucky this evening.

talking about a couple of other issues. 95 southbound at powder mill road, still have a report of that crash here this morning. at this point you can see it's not really slowing things too much at least. 66 and 95 no problems northbound or southbound there. taking a look at 270 with a trip down south, a little slow as you're coming off 70. it's better through germantown and then things open up through gaithersburg and rockville. aaron? >> we continue to follow the breaking news this morning. a man is dead after being shot by a police officer montgomery county. >> there are a lot of questions right now this morning about what led up to the shooting. news 4's justin finch is live with the information police will be reviewing. what's new, justin? >> reporter: angie, good morning. the on site investigation has wrapped up for now, but next up montgomery county police will look over that officer's body camera footage and other evidence collected including a

scene. so far police are being tight-lipped on what kind of weapon that was, but we do know this all begins about 11:00 or so last night here at the condominium complex. at some point that officer met a man here during a call. that's why the officer was here. they had some kind of conflict. it's unclear whether that man was involved in the theft call initially. it all ends with the officer opening fire and hitting that man in his upper torso. we were told the officer did call fire/rescue to assist in treating that man but he did die at the hospital. his name will be released once his family is notified. now as for the officer involved, we know that he is a five 46 year veteran of montgomery county police force. his name has not yet been released but it could come out. he is on paid administrative leave per department policy. >> justin finch live montgomery village. molette green with

her prius was found on friday. police are not saying where. her body was found bound and stabbed to death inside a basement apartment last week. police say they want to speak to the man you saw there. they're calling him person of interest. they said there were no signs of forced entry at the apartment and investigators don't think this was a random crime. we have some new details in the brutal murder of a d.c. artist. >> we'll tell you about a missing girl right now. this young woman is heaven shamte. she's missing since saturday. you see her picture on the screen. heaven is 150 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. she was last seen on 30th street just off naylor road. >> people are beginning to get more involved when it comes to searchinor

the national center for missing and exploited children hosted their very first facebook live session. they say luring kids on social media has replaced traditional ab dungt shuns. you can watch the entire conversation on our nbc washington app. all you have to do is search missing kids. 6:07 right now. an attack on a maryland girl is another important reminder to talk to your kids about the dangers of social media. court documents revealed a 13-year-old was raped by two men in a southeast d.c. home. police say the victim met one of the men on social media. she snuck out of her house and took ab uber to meet him. they ended upholding her in the basement until she was able to escape. two men are in jail without bond. here's a look at some of your political headlines this morning. president trump focusing on energy today. he's expected to sign an executive order to create more jobs for coal miners and repeal president obama's policyn

house intelligence committee chairman devin nunez is facing calls to recuse himself. this comes after his secret trip to the white house grounds to review classified information. the white house issuing a new threat to sanctuary committees. the penalties may not be the same for drivers who get a parking ticket in the district. if you get a traffic or parking ticket and you don't pay up in 30 days that fine doubles. the d.c. counsel is looking for a plan to get rid of doubled penalties but only for people who live in the district. that means if you live in virginia or maryland you could pay double fines. aaa says it creates short due dates because of the time it takes to mail notices. dc dmv warns people to nail a week in advance. >> the national season

66 in bound and everything rolling along nicely. remember to listen to wtop when you hop in the car today. melissa, thank you. 6:15. breaking news out of florida now where police officers were shot overnight. molette green at the live desk. >> reporter: we've learned that police are looking for six people involved in this ambush style shooting of those undercover miami officers. that's according to the miami herald this morning. incredible video we want to show you again of those injured officers hobbling out of the back of the pickup truck. they're getting help to walk inside a trauma center. they were shot inside the unmarked car while working a gang detail. the suspects reportedly walked past them and then opened fire and they got away. a bullet grazed one officer. the other one took a bullet to the leg. that's the latest. new charges for a maryland white

it may lead to terrorism charges. he's an army veteran. he stabbed timothy kauffman in the back with a sword killing him. prosecutors zajac son was intent on stirring racial fears. he told the "new york daily news" he's sorry and he would have rather killed a, quote, younger thug or more successful black man. this morning there is some hope for flint, michigan, residents. new waterlines are being installed by 2020 per the court agreement. the state of michigan and the city will pay to replace 18,000 home waterlines. the agreement settles a lawsuit over led contaminated water that was supplied for a year and a half before city officials alerted them. it didn't treat the water for led that leaks into it. are your

slime craze or making the gac? making homemade slide is becoming more and more popular. while it may keep your kids entertained, one ingredient may not be safe. susan hogan has the warning. >> reporter: this slime is so popular right now that just a few weeks ago we told you how it actually is causing a shortage of glue. but "consumer reports" is warning about another ingredient in the slime, borax. they say the household cleaner could actually be dangerous for your children. >> borax is meant to be a household cleaner or an additive for your laundry. just because you have it around, just because it seems to be perfectly safe for those types of applications doesn't mean it should be used for anything else, particularly household slime. >> reporter: tonight on news 4, we'll tell you about another concern "consumer reports" has and how you can protect your

swirl out here in the radar. that's the area of low pressure. it's sort of the scoop and score. scooping moisture out of the gulf of mexico. we are going to score some rain drops. that's good news. we're quite a bit behind in rainfall for the year. this first batch is moving out of our area from columbia into baltimore. there are rain drops out in the shenandoah valley. i-81 likely to have pockets of wet pavement. moving into parts of charlottesville. that is also coming our way. the speed it's going will arrive on the southwest side to the d.c. metro. likely to be raining around here between 8:00 in the morning and about 11:00 and then another chance for later. so here's future weather carries that first patch out. here comes that cluster of rain showers for charlottesville. by 9:00, pockets of moderate rain coming on 209 beltway. the first wav

they do believe she planned to do that here at the school sometime next month. among the items that she was allegedly assembling, shotgun, bomb-making materials, they were found in the student's home. she was identified as 18-year-old nicole savario. taken into custody here at the high school last week. her father came forward after reading some very frightening entries into her personal journal or diary. he did the right thing and possibly saved lives. >> small town close to camp david. just a scary thing. i'm sorry for the whole school and the whole community. >> that student does remain hozlized. there are counselors here at cotoctin high school to help students deal with the frighteningpl

6:34. some of the other top stories we are following. a man is dead after being shot by a police officer montgomery county. this happened at 11:00 after police say they got a call about a theft at a condo complex montgomery village. not clear what led to the shooting but police say they found a weapon at the scene. in about 15 minutes we'll have a live report on the other evidence that police are reviewing this morning. new details in the brutal murder of a d.c. artist may lead to her killer. they're going over her car as evidence. they found her car on friday although they're not saying where they found it. she was found bound and stabbed inside a basement apartment in northeast last week. the senate intelligence committee wants to talk to president trump's son-in-law, jared kushner, about his ties to russia during the transition. it's part of the investigation into russia's interference during the election. kushner volunteered to come forward and

6:35. the father of a high school rape suspect is in jail. i.c.e. said sanchez re yyes is here illegally. his son is accused of raping a student in the school bathroom. that high profile attack got the attention of the white house. now the trump administration is using that case at rockville high school as an example for the need to take action against sanctuary cities. sanctuary cities shelter people living in this country illegally by refusing to have the federal go -- >> that would be such a mistake. i would plead with the people of maryland to understand that this makes the state of maryland more at risk for violence and crime, that it's not good poli

the shooting. news 4's justin finch is live at the scene with the evidence that police have already collected this morning. what have you found out, justin? >> reporter: well, angie, we now know the officer's body camera footage will be critical in this investigation. major crime detectives spent hours in the area where we are right now collecting evidence which we now know includes a weapon of some kind. the investigation looking at video here covered a wide swath of the centre court condominiums last night. after 11:00 an officer radioed for fire rescue to help treat a man that he had shot. that's after he and that officer were embroiled in some kind of conflict out here. the officer was out here responding to what we know was some kind of theft call. it's not clear if the man that was shot was involved in that. we spoke to a neighbor who said she heard four to five shots last night and then she looked outside her window. >> i heard the gu
