thank you for joining us. it's going to be a busy weekend. and i think we're going to get a nice treat in the weather department. we can check with the weather department right now. meteorologist tom kierein standing by for us. hey, tom, good morning. >> i got you a treat. we have temperatures warming nicely today. we'll make it to the upper 70s. however, there's a caveat that we might get a passing thundershower this afternoon. right now a pink low in the eastern horizon. the sunrise is about 30 minutes from now at 6:31. temperatures right now in the 50s just about everywhere. a few spots in the 40s. shenandoah and reagan national at 56 degrees. we are all dry on storm team 4 radar. i don't have any thundershowers now. getting warm by 10:00 climbing into the 60s. the mid-70s by mid-afternoon and could hit the mid to upper 70s in the afternoon. we may get a passing thundershower, likely not a

the upper 60s. a look at your sunday and into next week and chances for rain in a few minutes. all right, tom, thank you so very much. now to this developing story out of virginia. portsmouth police say two little boys at the center of an amber alert have been found safe and unharmed after their own mother abducted them. portsmouth police say the mother, asia jarvis, threatened to shoot her sons dominick and messiah, if she didn't get money from her father. she dropped them off with a family member around midnight before driving off. police are saying if you see her, give them a call. and this morning the family of a fairfax county woman trying to cope with her sudden and rather devastating loss. police say a man who she didn't even know hit her with his car, turned around and hit her again. this happened yesterday morning

you're looking at chopper 4 footage of the scene. maria's daughter tells us her mom was on her morning walk when the 75-year-old was hit and killed. this man right here, keenan oscan was found inside a fitness center two-and-a-half hour later after he robbed and assaulted a woman. he w she was described as an incredible mother. d.c. police are investigating a double shooting at a place where families call home. police say two men were found shot in the street at the villages of parkland apartments on staten road in southeast. we are told bullets hit both men multiple times. no word yet on any suspects. and i have to tell you about this, the next safetrack surge is getting underway today on metro. the green belt and college park station is going to be closed starting today so that crews can do some work

college park will remain closed through april 29th. the greenbelt will shut down through may 14th but there will be free shuttle buses for metro riders. for a closer look at surge number 14, head over to the nbc washington app. today is free parking along the national mall. starting next month, parking meters will be installed near the national mall and east potomac park. it will cost $2 to park, david. don't expect to get weekends for free either. the meters will be effect seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. parking enforcement will start in june. all money collected will go to the national park service. >> we use it for projects to enhance the visitor projects while they are here. we are looking to pay for the d.c. circulator's national mall route. >> the national park service hopes it will increase turnover in those areas and

transportation. a blood drive is being held today, and this is to honor a fallen morningside firefighter, john ulmschneider, known as "skille "skillet." the blood drive will go from 10:00 to 3:00 today. another man who shot ulmschneider was sentenced yesterday. he said that he thought the medics were intruders. his attorney had this to say after the sentencing, take a listen. >> he certainly wants the community to know that was something he did not intend. and he, quite frankly, was not in full mental capacity. >> so he will serve time for the gun he

many people thought they heard a gunshot and scrambled for the exit. at least 16 people were hurt during the stampede. this happened after a new jersey transit train got stuck in a hudson river tunnel for hours. 1200 people were on board. they were just getting off the train at the time of the stampede. no word on what caused the truck to get stuck. and from trains to planes, this is pretty interesting, molette. you may want to give up your airplane seat if you fly delta. the airline says it will let employees offer customers almost $10,000 to give up a seat on an overbooked flight. in reaction to the backlash that united received after a man was dragged off a flight, united says it is reviewing its compensation policies but will now require employees to book flights at least one hour ahead of departure. we want you to take a look at this wicked weather. this was yesterday. about an hour ago outside of amarillo, texas. there you see

tom, we'll check in with you then. we'll take you to north korea where they held a massive parade today to honor the birthday of their late founding father, kim il-son. they also included several prototypes of intercontinental ballistic missiles. one of the missiles had never been seen before today. kim jong-un watched from a podium. earlier today, one of his aides said president trump is pushing the world toward nuclear war. and the threats have been flying back and forth. u.s. intelligence officials don't think the north has a missile that can reach the u.s., but cyber is a different story. >> in the case of north korea, the threat against the u.s. is not likely a missile but a cyber threat. we would raise the levels if something happened and we felt as if there was a pbl

you always want to caution on the side of caution. >> john kelly will be talking to chuck todd on "meet the press" tomorrow. and today marks four years since the boston marathon bombing. it comes a few days before this year's annual race. right now security preparations are underway in the city to prepare for the big event. the fbi, state and local police all are working together to keep the race safe. boston's mayor says they are prepared for any situation, but they are reassuring people there are no credible threats. and this weekend marks ten years since the virginia tech mass shooting. there's going to be a remembrance happening today at 10:00 this morning. there is going to be a run to honor the shooting victims followed by a community picnic.

first responders are going to be recognized at the virginia tech baseball game. our coverage will be with news4's aaron gilchrist who is that the down with tim kaine in what is an emotional talk about that day. >> in a classroom is a cell phone ringing over and over again. because parents saw there was a shooting at virginia tech and you want to call your kid to see if they are safe. >> reporter: senator tim kaine fought back tears after rushing to the horrific scene of virginia tech in 2007. he vividly remembers every day, every sight, after the attack. >> every hospital was filled with people who were injured. so we spent a couple of days going around talking to some of these kids. >> reporter: on what kaine calls the worst day of his life. he was in

trip as the shooting started a world away. >> ron, who is head of the security detail of the governor, said you have to call back home. there's been a horrible shooting. then it was still ongoing. >> reporter: first in the dorm room and then to the hall bringing chaos to southwest virginia. when it was all over, 34 students and faculty were dead. the gunman killed himself and the entire community was left in inexplicably grief and shock. >> we were with the families who had lost loved ones and they were incredibly painful, raw interactions. but it really formed a bond. >> reporter: kaine and his wife visited the injured that were overcome and in tears. the day after the shooting he spoke at a televised national gathering on campus. unscripted and raw, he called on his faith to console the community. then he spoke about the work of getting answers. >> i was told by some, if they really lay out what happened, it is just going to be a blueprint for a lawsuit against the

the lawsuit. i mean, if we can do nothing else for these families other than learn from it and try to get better, we need to do that. >> reporter: virginia tech ultimately came back with a critical report and more than 70 recommendations for colleges, law enforcement, mental health providers and lawmakers. they resulted in changes in a lot of areas, but kaine still regrets getting the legislature to conduct background checks. >> i don't know what it is going to take. i worry how many more tragedies will there have to be before we wake up and say, we can reduce this. >> reporter: and now ten years later, kaine speaks of the dead and survivors as family members. he speaks about those who died. >> there's a daughter of one of the professors that was killed that i have, over time, sat down and given her advice about grad school and then a reference for it. >> reporter: relationships born out of tragedy for one man, a driving force to keep working for the virginia tech 32, and t

next. >> reporter: a circuit court judge in arkansas has blocked executions by lethal injections from taking place there. the judge issued a temporary restraining order friday evening after the maker of a drug said it wasn't meant to be used in executions and asked the state prison system to send it back. arkansas's governor had originally scheduled eight executions over 11 days because another drug used in the execution process will expire at the end of april. a federal judge already blocked one execution earlier this month. and by friday night, that number had fallen to six after the arkansas supreme court stepped in granting bruce earl ward a temporary stay of his planned execution. the flurry of court action came after protests at the state capitol in arkansas friday. an attorney for three of the inmates called it assembly line killing. >> it is unprecedented that a state is trying to execute this many people in this short of a period of time. >> reporter: drugan

the white house and they found several weapons on his property. retiring major general james grazioplene is accused of several rape charges. he most recently worked at the pentagon before retiring back in 2005. he'll be prosecuted under the military justice system. and a scary incident at a restaurant ins reston. a man swinging a large chain threatened people sitting on a patio outside of glory days. that's located in the fox mill center not far from the reston park and ride. the employees ran into the building and locked the doors. they say kwan ali broke through the front door, broke bottles and glasses at the bar and then injured a man. eventually, police caught him lying under a car after they say he tried to break in to a nearby

transgender and gay students in fairfax county will continue to be protected. a student filed the lawsuit after the school board voted to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the nondiscrimination policy. the student said he was terrified to share spaces with transgender students and said it was an invasion of his privacy. the virginia supreme court dismissed the lawsuit saying that students, quote, general distress did not give him standing to sue the school system. a man out driving without credentials and including a criminal record was allowed to drive a d.c. school bus for five days. d.c. school officials say the man was hired due to a lapse in its hiring procedures. the man and human resources staffer who approved the hire have both been fired. the parents of the 22 students who rode with him were notified. and 6:36 on this saturday. question for you, should you

florida dealing with another brush fire. we have been telling you about all the problems the sunshine state is dealing with this week. dozens of fires have torched acre after acre. look at the flames. the most recent fire in tampa sparked yesterday afternoon. the cause of the fire unknown. the threat of wildfire continues in florida because of a dry, windy forecast. as a result, multiple counties in the tampa area have issued burn bans. the white house is ending an obama-era practice of making visitor logs to the executive complex open to the public. the s

bowser's plan to close d.c. hotel. for years they have been receiving money to house the homeless in hotels. and capital bikeshare is expanding. "the washington post" reporting that those red bikes should start rolling next spring. the county is planning 40 bikes at national harbor and 250 bikes in the anacostia trails heritage area. there are plans for 67 stations in the next few years, adding areas like greenbelt and college park. capital bikeshare already operates in d.c., parts of virginia and montgomery county. all right. in the quest 4 the cup, the capitals will go head-to-head with the toronto mapleleafs in game two of the playoffs. a lot of fans holding their breath! that the caps will come out a
