by mid-evening with clouds coming and going. summer-like weather is on the way. that's coming up in a few minutes. tom, thank you so much. now to a developing story out of virginia, portsmouth police say two little boys at the center of an amber alert have been found safe and unharmed after their own mother abducted them. portsmouth police say the mother, asia jarvis, threatened to shoot her sons, dominique and messiah, if she didn't get money from their father. according to the station, jarvis dropped off the boys with a family member around midnight this morning before driving off. call police if you know where she is. this morning the family of a fairfax county woman is trying to cope with her devastating loss. a man hit her with her car and turned around to hit her again. this happened at route 50 at rugby road. this is the scene

chopper down there. maria's daughter says her mom was on a walk when the 75-year-old was shot and killed. they arrested this man inside a fitness center at a nearby shopping center after they allegedly robbed and assaulted another woman there. ascencio was described as an incredible mother. d.c. police are looking into a double shooting where families call home. two men were shot at the village parkland apartments on stat stanton road in southeast. we are told bullets hit both men multiple times. no word yet on any suspects. and all things metro moving over to the green line. green track 14 work gets underway today. we are live with more on what you need to know before heading to the train today. derek ward has more. hey, derrick. >> reporteec

that, take a look at what the scene is here. you notice people in the yellow jackets. these folks are waiting for shuttle buses. that is going to be the way to get to these stations that are affected by the surge. take a look at the map. now, this surge affects the green line, like the northeastern tip of the green line between the green belt and prince george's. the greenbelt near the college park stations are closed. they are suggesting passengers do this like new carollton. if you are going downtown, you may want to consider taking mark, they are using extra trains to get you to greenville and the college park

also the university of maryland shuttles are beefing up as well. take care of the excess ridership. but there are more shuttle buses on the roads as well. so that will mean it will be issues for traffic around here, but that's the way of the surge. it ends on april 29th. derrick ward, nbc4 news. the days of free parking along the national mall are over. starting next month, parking meters will be installed near the mall. the title basin and in some parking lots in east potomac park. it will cost $2 to park. don't expect to get weekends for free either. the meters will be in effect seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. this is going to start in june. this is to enhance the visitor

the little rufr univer united c of christ. the same thing happened down the road when the vandal targeted the jewish community center in northern virginia. at 7:30 tonight, they are holding a vigil to bring together different faiths. and on wednesday of this past week, we reported that a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the hate crimes. if you're headed out to six flags this holiday weekend, don't expect to ride the joker's jinx roller coaster. investigators are looking to see what caused it to get stuck this wednesday. two dozen people had to be rescued from the ride. no one was hurt, but it took three hours to get all the folks down. last month the ride was inspected and had no violations, but it was cited for three areas of improvement. and later certified as okay. the coaster will stay closed until further notice. panic at penn station. look at this video right here. we're going to tell you about the spark that led to a

panic at penn station. a chaotic scene broke out last night after people used a taser on a man inside the station. many thought they heard a gunshot and scrambled for the exit. 16 people were hurt during the stampede. this happened during the new jersey transit train got stuck in a hudson river tunnel for hours. no word on what caused the train to get stuck. from trains to planes, you may want to give up your airplane seat if you fly delta. so the airline says it will let emee

prepared for any situation, but they are reassuring people there there are not credible threats. and molette, the weekend marks ten years since the virginia tech mass shooting. the remembrance event happening today at 10:00 this morning, there will be a run to honor the shooting victims followed by a community picnic. then at 1:00 this afternoon, the first responders will be recognized at the virginia tech baseball game. our coverage this morning begins with aaron gilchrist for what was an emotional conversation about that tragic day. >> we talk about going into the classrooms where bodies were laying on the floor. and everybody's cell phone was just ringing over and over again because parents had seen on tv there was a shooting on virginia tech and they wanted to see if their kid was safe. >> reporter: senator tim kaine fought back tears has he talked to first

the scene from virginia tech back in 2007. >> every hospital was full of the injured and so we spent a couple days going around and talking to some of these kids. >> reporter: on what kaine calls the worst day of his life, he was in japan on a business trip asleep when the shooting started a world away. >> ron, who was the head of the security detail for the governor said, hey, you got to call back home. there's been a horrible shooting. it was still ongoing. >> reporter: first in a dorm room, then now in the infamous norris hall. a gunman brought chaos and carnage to southwest virginia. when it was all dofr, 32 students and faculty were watching now. the gunman killed himself and the entire community was left in inexplicable grief and shock. >> we were with the family members who lost loved ones and there were incredibly, painful, raw interactions but it formed a bond. >> reporter: kaine and h

visited the injured with moments of tears. and he held an unscripted and raw moment at the campus. >> i was told by some, disappoint appoint a panel, because if they lay out what happened, it will be a blueprint for a lawsuit against the state. and i said, i don't care about the lawsuit. i mean, if we can do nothing else for these families other than learn from it, we aught to do just that. >> reporter: the panel came back with a critical report from colleges, law enforcement, mental health providers and lawmakers. they resulted in changes in a lot of areas, but kaine still regrets not getting the legislature to embrace background universal checks for buying guns. >> i don't know how much it is going to take before you wake up and say, we can reduce this. >> reporter: and now, ten years later, kaine speaks of the dead and surviving like family

saturday morning, gray sky and we are going green. all the trees you see there near the capital and everything around the region going green quickly on this april morning, mid-april. there's the gray skies over this with our tower camera from upper northwest. temperatures right now are climbing, into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees in parts of the region. leesburg, 59. so is frederick. and sunshine in the mountains, but still a lot of clouds east of the blue ridge and east of the mountains to the bay. but they should be breaking up in another few hours. scanning the clouds, no rain here locally, just a few sprinkles south of cambridge and then as of 3:00 p.m., we have a few isolated showers or thundershowers popping up in the shenandoah valley. then after that, they get closer to the metro area around 6:00 p.m. with a few passing

showers with brief rumbles of thunder coming through between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. that may interrupt the nationals game. after that, we'll move into southern maryland with a few showers. no severe storms. then we'll get the cloud cover in and out overnight tonight. there at nats park, first pitch is 1:05 taking on the phillies. temperatures should be up near 70 by then and partly cloudy. partly sunny, 3:00 p.m. then after that, toward the end of the game, it may be interrupted by a passing shower or thundershower in the mid-70s. then summer-like weather for easter sunday back into the mid-80s in the afternoon. and we'll be in the 60s in the morning for easter egg hunting. it's going to be comfortably cool with sunshine and dry conditions. and then in the afternoon, like summertime, then back to work and school on monday. maybe some sprinkles in the morning. sun back in the afternoon into the mid-70s. a bit cooler tuesday. and then wednesday, some much-needed rain coming in. we are in a drought. we could use it and it will help to wash someth
