leonardtown. just a few moments ago, i talked by phone with a witness. >> my sister and i were hanging up the flags on our flag pole and we saw this helicopter flying, it's a high traffic area, and in one of them just started to lower and started to spiral down, and it disappeared below the trees, it looked like it had flipped over upside down and then we heard a big explosion come. >> that explosion was obviously the plane going down. all of this is still unfolding, we have team coverage of this situation there in maryland. >> beginning with news4's darcy spencer who is live right now in leonardtown. darcy? >> reporter: good afternoon, we are here on society hill road in leonardtown in st. mary's county. behind me the golf course w

that crash landing this afternoon. this is the breton bay golf course. we're being kept at a very far distance from the actual scene where the investigation is taking place, but this gives you an idea. we have photos, we do have video of the scene. this is a photo from baynet.com, a reporter was able to get close to the wreckage when it happened. also our chopper 4 was able to get some images of the scene from a distance. this is a black hawk helicopter that made a hard landing just before 2:00 this afternoon. we understand that there were three people on board this helicopter. one person was airlifted to the hospital. we don't have any update at this point on their conditions. if we can go ahead and show you the scene here as i'm speaking a little bit. if you look off in the distance, there's a helicopter that's continuing to circle around this area. we're not sure why, but we're seeing other helicopters come through the area. this chopper in

crashed this afternoon is based at fort belvoir in fairfax county. we're working to find out why this happened. you heard that witness talk a little bit about what happened, what she was able to see, what she was able to hear about the spinning and that explosion. there's a media staging area a couple of miles from here. we have another crew over there. we're expecting to get a briefing a little bit later on this afternoon. a spokesperson for the army, so we hope to find out more information about why this happened and especially information about the people on board the helicopter. no word on their conditions at this point. we'll send it back to you. >> thank you, darcy. again, one of them, at least one of them, airlifted to a hospital. our team coverage continues now with scott macfarlane. scotty, for folks who aren't familiar with this aircraft, tell us what we're dealing with here. >> it's not terribly uncommon to see black hawk helicopters in our areas, the uh-60s have a major

washington, d.c. area. this one is associated with fort belvoir. they're a major presence at fort belvoir, and it includes army helicopters. they have a very important mission in our area, they fly vips to and from the pentagon and the greater d.c. region. they're parts of important ceremonies, funerals at arlington national cemetery, at recruitment efforts at schools. it's not uncommon to see mishaps with these helicopters because they're work horses, flown nationwide and in missions overseas. there was a hard landing in okinawa two years ago, a crash months ago in kentucky. they're a major presence in u.s. military aircraft, and the military and congress plan on spending a billion dollars more of these helicopters, they're so important to the u.s. military. >> and i think the army just did its test fli

short time ago, she tells me, that's where the man who was inside this home, holed up for several hours, was talking to police from. that was going back and forth throughout the night into this morning, and ended around 1:00. i want to show you what we saw around 1:00. this is when we got the indication that things were changing here. we saw ambulances going through the police tape, then saw police intact c in tactical gear, and the tense moments had subsided. we learned from police that the manholed up inside the home with two young children, a 4-year-old and 8-year-old, his own children, according to police, was taken down by a taser. they were able to use a taser and take him into custody. the children were just fine. listening to neighbors who described watching the final moments. >> eventually they got the kids out and the kids looked healthy and all good. >> i said toy

country's leader he's got to behave. vice president mike pence warned the era of strategic patience is over and mr. pence's comments came as he made a walk along the dmz between north and south korea. neil gorsuch sat in on his first round of oral arguments today. the justices heard a case on the separation of church and state. the case was delayed for months over fears of a 4-4 tie. the white house confirmed to news4 today, the first family will reunite under one roof this summer. melania and barron will move into the white house when his school year ends. they haven't set a date, although the move will likely happen sometime after june. the white house says the plan has always been for the family to come together after barren finished the school year in new york city. prince harry's emotional and revealing interview. he talks about his menta

watch the first family put so much time and effort into making it a wonderful experience for so many americans. >> reporter: about 20,000, according to the white house, but an eggselent time for these kids. and uproar over one passenger has forced united airlines to change the rules. once you're on the plane, you won't be forced to give up your seat to a crew member. the policy comes after this viral video showing a passenger dragged off a flight in order to make room for a united employee, a crew member. united is also changing its rules to require crew members to book seats at least 60 minutes before a plane takes off. previously, the deadline was departure. the changes are outlined, rather, in an internal e-mail that went out on friday. we are working for you as we approach the deadline to get your taxes done.

prince george's county is adding new transportation options. capital bike share program will expand to the county next year. "the washington post" is reporting a launch date of spring 2018. the program already exists in the district and many surrounding counties. 67 stations with a total of 670 bikes phased in over the next few years. a and over in virginia, the new library and sterling is breaking records a few days into his existence. the state of the art facility opened saturday. visitors that day more than doubled its highest ever day at the old building. this one has a lot more than just books. >> we do a lot of programs and other activities here that go way beyond just checking out books. there's still a lot of families who don't have internet access at home and they depend on their cell phones and libraries to use the internet. we're also p

county, fairfax, and montgomery county in maryland. there's the front that will sag to the south. most of that rain will be gone throughout the evening and part low cloudy skies overnight. temperatures with a little bit of sunshine, to around 70 degrees. that sun is not going down until 7:45. make it to around sechb70 right. 60s are average for this time of year. you can see, we almost make it to the 70 degrees by 6:00 p.m. temperatures will come down and fall into the 50s and 40s during the eveovernight. we are warming up to about 60 degrees by about 9:00 a.m. some sunshine, i do believe we could have high clouds, especially south of i-66. the closer to central virginia you are, better chance for some cloud cover. but we'll be dry and temperatures delightful out there, upper 60s and lower 70s for your tuesday. and

doctors, they were all telling me, don't fall asleep with your phone or ipad. that same is true for our youngest kids. researchers tracked 700 families with babies and toddlers. most parents let them use screens for as much as 45 minutes a day. researchers found for every hour of touch-screen use, toddlers lost about 15 minutes of sleep. they say the screens also may get a lot harder for kids to fall asleep in the first place. parts of maryland and virginia will be getting access to a brand-new service through an app that lets you farm out chores that you don't want to do. it's called takl. you get a lawn-care service, gutter cleaning, sewing, house cleaning, a whole host of handyman chores, chores that you don't want to do. >> assemble ikea furniture, i mow lawns,

a frantic search under way this afternoon, crippling parts of downtown cleveland. police are still looking for a man accused of killing an elderly man and posting the violence to facebook. nbc's sarah dulles spoke with the victim's son. an intensifying manhunt for this man, steve stephens, suspected of recording himself executing an elderly cleveland man on easter day. >> i'm gonna kill this guy right here. >> reporter: then posting this video to facebook. 74-year-old robert godwin was selected at random. he laid out his motivation for the attack, blaming a woman he was dating. >> she

with chris and wendy. news4 at 5:00 starts now. now at 5:00, a developing story from southern maryland. authorities investigating how this military chopper made what's being called a hard landing on a local golf course. >> yeah, all of this still unfolding, but witnesses are telling us, they saw two choppers flying overhead, and then one of them started to lose control. >> it started to spiral down, and it disappeared below the trees, it looked like it had flipped over upside down, and then we heard a big explosion come. >> this is the second time this month we've seen a military aircraft involved in some sort of crash in our area. i'm chris lawrence in for handly. >> and i'm wendy rieger. today's incident involved a black hawk helicopter. chopper 4 is there. this happened just a few hours ago. news4's darcy spencer is at the breton bay golf course in leonardtown and talked with a man who

darcy? >> reporter: that's right, wendy. since we talked to you in the 4:00 hour, we were able to stop a man who was leaving the area, who said he witnessed it, along with his brothers. we'll have some of his eyewitne eyewitness account in just a minute. we are at the breton bay golf course. off in the distance, you see a car with a flashing light. also there's some evidence markers placed here on the golf course. from what we understand from witnesses, this aircraft may have lost some pieces, and again, evidence markers here along the way. that was according to a man who saw this crash happen. now, let's go ahead and show you some photos that was taken by southern maryland news, posted online. it was just before 2:00 this afternoon when that black hawk went down. there were three people on board the aircraft. one person was airlifted. to this point, we have not been told the conditions of anyone who was on that helicopter. now, let's hear
