breaking news, a man in is critical condition after a tree fell on top of him. this was very sudden. it happened on capitol hill less than an hour ago. >> news4 chris gordon is joining us. what do we know so far? >> reporter: well, we're going to set the scene for you. first of all, this happened right across the street from the house office building. you can see d.c. fire and ems responded and an adult male was hit. a large part of a tree fell down onto a sidewalk from the u.s.

capitol grounds. we saw another portion of the branch collapse as well. it is still an unstable, unstable tree. the man was pinned under a large portion of the tree for a period of time. he was given cpr. he was unconscious at the time. they got him out from under the tree and transported him to a local hospital. he is said to be in critical condition. here along independence avenue, a large portion is closed to the public. a large contingent of u.s. capitol police are investigating. there are tourists at the u.s. capitol but they have to walk around the area. the part of independence is closed from second street to first street in southwest. about three or four blocks of

upper 60s before the sun starts to set. nice weather today. tomorrow, though, we'll see changes. cloud cover has moved in and it will be back. a closer look at that when we come back. police are investigating a school bus fire around 7:45 this morning in the area of point lookout road and fairgrounds road. the sheriff office says the bus was taking students to leonardtown high school when the entire bus began smoking. the driver pulled over and everyone got off and then it caught fire. luckily, no one was hurt. well, if your sense of safety was an important topic in montgomery county today, they e decided to upgrade security at jcc. >> reporter: melissa, good morning. the unanimous vote happened a few minutes ago.

people of montgomery county. they keep hearing threats after threats at the jewish community centers. police have responded to the sixth bomb threat in four months. they had to spend an extra $40,000 on security. today's vote should help ease some of that. we spoke to two council members who said they voted for the extra funding. here's what they had to say. >> all of us are concerned about the safety for all of us and it's an opportunity to make certain that everyone is safe. >> these are prudent expenditures to make sure our jewish community and sikh community feels safe in montgomery county. >> reporter: and now that the money has been approved, it will be given to jewish centers in bethesda and rockville. that's the very latest. we're live in rockville.

meantime, a bill has been approved to require more healthy options in county-owned vending machines that limits the amount of sugar, salt and calories available in machines. the changes apply to county buildings, including rec centers and libraries and parks. the army will be back on the scene of the a deadly helicopter crash that went down on a golf course in southern maryland. t the. >> reporter: today, army investigators will begin their investigation combing through debris and reviewing other factors to determine why the black hawk took off only to crash in southern maryland. it was left in pieces monday afternoon. this video from southern maryland shows the

rubble. this was an hour southeast of the district. it was a training flight. the army officials are now saying it was in a group of other helicopters. witnesses recall that blackhawk flying low before ultimately crashing down to the ground. >> we saw it dipping very low and my comment made a comment look how low it is and then it was going side ways and then started to go backwards and then it went down. >> reporter: three members were aboard. one died on the scene and two others taken to a trauma center. one in serious condition, the other in critical condition. their names will be released once their families are notified. justin finch, news4. depending on where you live, you've likely seen a

sunday evening at 5:30. police are looking for four suspects. look at your screen. one of them in this situation actually punched the victim. if you recognize any of those suspects, you're asked to call metro train police. at this hour, the manhunt is still on with more and more reports of sightings of the man who posted a video of a murder on facebook. police had to debunk reports that they saw steve stephens but there are concerns in several states. jacob rascon has the latest on a search for a killer. >> reporter: investigators are chasing down hundreds of leads. more than 400 have come in from as far away as texas and philadelphia but so far none have proved credible. no confirmed sightings whatsoever since the day of the murder on easter sunday. steve

we've learned that human remains have been identified of a woman who went missing months ago. michelle simms disappeared last october. they found her remains this weekend and identified them today. she was 32 years old. police don't know how she died but her body was discovered in the city of fredericksburg in a heavily wooded area. police would not say exactly where. and in news4 your health, if you have a habit of smoking cigarettes, three-quarters of smokers use more than one method to kick the habit including cutting back, quitting cold turkey and switching to electronic cigarettes. doctors say baby boomers have a higher risk for a disease
