board. allergy season at its peak. how bad it is getting and how long you have to wait for relief. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. confusion for a local family during a medical emergency and now a 911 center is warning callers not to hang up even if it sounds like the call drops. >> a man suffered cardiac arrest at an easter sunday gathering. eight people with him called 911 and that's where the confusion started. >> jackie bensen is live with the story you will see only on news 4. >> reporter: we have been in touch with county officials trying to figure out what caused this confusion. what we learned by law the greeting must contain a tone that most of us now associate with being connected to a fax machine. >> you have

emergency all lines are busy please hold. >> reporter: sharon snoeden sdroi describes what she heard when she called 911 to report a family friend needed urgent medical attention. the panic and pressure of the situation led several callers to interpret the loud tone as a failed call even though recordings contained a warning. >> you have reached prince georges county 911. do not hang up. your call will be answered in the order it was received. the following tones are for the hearing impaired. >> reporter: a family friend she had known her whole life. >> let's just go in the house and get the house phone. maybe something with the cell phones. let's go to the house phone. my mother grabs the house pho

she gets the recording. >> reporter: frantically directed her husband to drive to a fire station but the paramedics were already at the house thanks to a neighbor who did not hang up despite being confused by the loud tone. jerry armstrong says his brother is not doing well. >> my brother right now is in the hospital now. and today they are going to take him off the ventilator. >> reporter: she says she wants to make sure others learn from this experience. >> i have this man in my hands. and i know the most important thing is to try to keep this man living. and i gave him everything that i could and i didn't hear nothing. >> reporter: i spoke by phone with the head of the 911 call center last night. she said another concern was raised about the tone last month. tt

despite hearing sounds like that especially if you get cell phone drop out that might be the first thing you hear in the call do not hang up. live in capital heights, jackie bensen news 4. >> thank you, jackie. new tonight we are just learning names of crew members on the black hawk helicopter that crashed at a golf course in maryland yesterday. specialist jeremy tomlin is the one who died. he was just 22 years old from chapel hill, tennessee. chief warrant officer christopher nicholas the pilot are in critical condition at shock trauma in baltimore. army investigators are still trying to figure out why the helicopter went down. things are back to normal on the red line after a truck problem caused massive delays during the evening rush. around 5:00 smoke was reported in the tunnel. the platforms quickly became

overcrowded and got so bad at one point metro started asking commuters to avoid the red line all together. metro says riders are experiencing a more reliable trip this year. the agency says fewer trains had to offload passengers in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year. metro credits improvement to removing 1,000 and 4,000 series cars and fairly soon we will find out how metro's gm plans to fix the entire system. could release the plan as early as tomorrow and that it is expected to include a dedicated source of funding. if you suffer from allergies we don't have to tell you the last few weeks have been as bad as it gets. there is relief on the way. doug will tell us about that in a minute. first shomari stone has a closer look at our pollen problem. >> ke

he was. many of us have been especially over the last week. pollen continues to be on the high side but only for the trees. tree pollen way up there as we see explosion of trees. grass, weeds, mold on the low side. high temperatures tonight 72. a beautiful afternoon but that only helps with the pollen. we need rainfall and we have rain down to the south. i'm tracking that rain and will show you what it means for your wednesday and when we will see beneficial rainfall. i have that in the forecast in about ten minutes. police in fresno, california say a shooting spree this afternoon is not linked to terrorism but it may be a hate crime. 39-year-old corey mohammed is accused of killing three people. witnesses say he shouted god is great in arabic during the shooting. all victims are white. police say social media accounts express anti-white

>> unprovoked attacks by an individual that was intent on carrying out homicides today. >> he is wanted in connection with the shooting death of a security guard at a motel 6 last week. he is charged now with four counts of murder. in most murder mysteries detectives are looking for a suspect or a motive. in this case they cannot heed the victim. tonight they are asking for your help. on sunday a woman was stabbed to death and collapsed in someone's front yard. detectives think she was in her early 20s and had on jeans, shirt and knit cap. investigators need to find out who she was. we have more pictures in the nbc washington app. developing now, police are asking for your help to identify the people behind the deadly ambush of this man outside a diner. he was shot and stabbed early monday

20-year-old dennis sanchez. they say he drove the white suv shown in this surveillance video. sanchez can be seen entering the restaurant and sitting down feet away from the victim. police say they are looking for two other men who attacked and released a picture of a person of interest. some in the community believe it is a gang-related killing. >> we have reached out to the northern virginia regional gang task force. it is still too early to speculate whether it is gang related at this time but we are investigating all possible leads and motives. >> you can get another look at that wanted poster on our nbc washington app. we are tracking results in a potentially pivotal special election. with more than half of the results in leading the field crowded with

the vote. otherwise he would be forced to do a two-person run off in june. that is a much tougher challenge considering president trump carried that district in november. the seat used to belong to health and human services secretary tom price. here at home we have learned a democrat is taking the job of a local republican. tonight jackie smith won a special election for clerk of the county court. she took 54% of the vote. long term clerk was republican and recently died. president george h.w. bush is recovering from a bout of pneumonia. the 41st president was admitted to the hospital for a cough that wouldn't clear up. his office released a statement saying the pneumonia has been treated and that the president will stay in the hospital for observation until he gets his strength back. heads up if you are near the washin n
