tomorrow. first this morning, you may have seen the alert on your phone. >> aaron hernandez committed suicide. he was serving a life sentence. hernandez was found not guilty of another crime recently. >> reporter: just days after breaking down in tears following acquittal in a double-murder case, former new england patriots tight end aaron hernandez was found dead in his cell at a massachusetts state prison overnight. the same prison where he was serving a life sentence for another murder four years ago. prison officials say hernandez hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a cell window. hernandez was about to begin his third season with the patriots in june 2013 but the team cut him just days following his arrest for the shooting death of another man. for that murder, hernandez was

the possibility of parole. nbc news. right now, le jij loureligi are holding a rally outside of the supreme court. the state refused to pay to resurface a church playground because it prevents state money from going to a church. the church says that law d disdiscriminates against religious institutions. the consequences here could be significant because they could affect all kinds of public services for religious schools. there is some concern this morning about what happens when you call 911 in an emergency and you get a recording. a prince george's county family says the confusion put one man in danger. news4's erika gonzalez is live in capitol

story. >> reporter: you call 911 and you expect to hear someone on the line and instead they got a recorded message and heard an unfamiliar sound. >> this is prince george's county 911. do not hang up. your car will be answered in the order it was received. please stay on the line. the following tones are for the hearing impaired. >> reporter: eight people called 911 that day and they all said they got that same message and they heard that same sound, kind of like a fax machine to you or me. but it is for the hearing impaired and county officials say it is by law. 67-year-old william armstrong had a medical emergency this past weekend. everybody around him called 911 but they were confused by that sound on the other end. while help arrived, one of the

stephens at the drive-through where the owner says he ordered mcnugget and fries. >> the drive-through employee at the time recognized him and took his money. he pulled to the next window. meanwhile, she stepped out of there and called the state police right away. >> reporter: when they tried to stall his order, stephens sped off but police were quickly in pursuit. >> when the pit maneuver was conducted, the vehicle spun around, came to a stop, immediately he pulled the weapon out and shot himself. >> the unit's psp is behind a white ford fusion on buffalo road. >> reporter: investigators had been scouring the area about 100 miles from cleveland since sunday when they pinged stephens' cell phone. he randomly chose robert godwin and murdered him on easter sunday posting the video on facebook. >> i want to see him go to trial because of the

around 2:30. fire officials say one firefighter was hurt and several nearby homes had to be evacuated due to hazardous chemical fumes. while three thrill seekers can experience the jok joker ji roller coaster, it was shut down after dozens of riders dangled in the air for hours. no one was hurt. there was an issue with a wheel on the ride which has been fixed. many of us have been suffering with the runny nose and eyes and nasal congestion. blame the pollen. for the last few weeks, it's been as bad as it gets. >> i want to relationship my eyes out of my head and my teeth feel like they are going to come out of my mouth. >> it's being blamed on trees that are producing the leaves. doctors recommend you use a nasal inhaler and eye

drive with your windows and sunroof closed and use your ac. a lot of people are stressed out and now there's evidence that shows stress can really be bad for your health. a recent british study suggests that chronic stress is associated with obesity. here now to talk about the study and what you can do to control your stress level is dr. joshua weiner. thank you for joining us. you're saying that this can lead to obesity. >> there's been a handful of studies that have tried to evaluate this connection and the thi thing is, some prior results showed there was a connection and some showed there wasn't. what makes this important is two things. number one, it was a much larger study. thousands of people versus dozens. the larger the study, the

when you're talking about connections between stress and weight gain or obesity, you're looking at a hormone called cortisol. they have looked at snapshots of cortisol. with this study, they took hair samples. they were able to measure people's cortisol because they were able to assess the levels at an average of two months. those two factors add more weight to the credibility of this particular study. >> does it show why these stress levels contribute to weight gain and obesity? >> there are a couple of theories. one is that cortisol is primarily involved. with cortisol, it's involved in causing fat development. particularly in the abdominal area. we have some reason to suggest that this is in fact a cause and effect although we can't say with certainty. there's a disease called cushing's

seems to be a major player. the other thing is, when people are stressed out, they have bad habits. they comfort eat. so they are going to eat calories, food that is in high in sugar and calories. it's a little bit of chicken and egg thing. we think it's probably one of those or both of those factors involved. >> what can we do to avoid the pit falls of stress eating and drinking? >> i call it a 30-minute rule. whenever you're wanting to do something that you really know you shouldn't do, whether it's eat something you shouldn't eat, buy something you shouldn't buy, you get the idea, what you want to do is distract yourself for 30 minutes. go do something entirely different. what we know is that the intensity of a desire to do something will sort of rise and fall in about a 30-minute period. so you're much more likely to be able to resist that temptation if you can go half an hour. at the end of that half hour, if you still feel like you need that chocolate cake, at least you

give it that half hour. >> what about some tips for controlling our daily stress? we deal with it every day at home, at work, all the time. >> right. this is just basic stuff that everybody knows but often doesn't do. you've got to prioritize sleep. we know that sleep -- >> it's hard. >> i know. but sleep also affects weight because if you don't sleep enough, you have increases of something called ghrelin and lower levels of leptin which makes you full. exercise is almost as effective or depending on the study, as effective as antidepressant medication for managing anxiety. very helpful for stress. people really need to do that. and then it's eat healthy, take pro b probiotics. you really want to do meditation. people cringe and think it's hard. maybe you n

with endangering a child. she's now free on $10,000 bond. >> she had no prior history. there was no incident, no concern as far as a flight risk and had been cooperative with us. >> reporter: the children's courtyard operates 55 centers in four states. in the last two years, the plano center has been cited for 29 deficiencies, nine of those rated high. state officials report all of the deficiencies had been corrected. a statement from the children's courtyard reads in part, "we have strict policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of our children. we don't tolerate deviation from those standards. upon being made aware of the situation, we immediately notified the authorities." the children's courtyard's facebook page exploded with outraged comments.
