will go to court later today. he faces a federal charge of crossing state lines, as well as charges in tennessee, including aggravated kidnapping. this morning, 15-year-old elizabeth thomas is heading home to tennessee. her alleged kidnapper, tad cummins, a teacher from her high school, three-times her age, is now behind bars. a tip led authorities to this cappen in the woods near cecilville. a tactical team surrounded the cabin in near-freezing temperatures. cummins, believed to be armed, was inside with thomas. deputies waited for them to come out early thursday morning. they did. >> short >> shortly after 9:30 a.m. he exited t cabin. the female victim exited the cabinnd was walking behind him. the victim appeared to be in good h health. and mr. cummins was cooperative with law enforcement authorities at the scene. >> reporter: police recovered two loaded handguns. >> mr.

choice. sometimes it's on doctor's order. >> a big study. thousands of people followed over years. they found people who drink diet soda have accelerated brain aging. they looked at how often they had strokes, three times more likely than normal. they looked at their brain, it was shrinking. as it shrivels you use cognitive function, and it leads to dementia. >> you mention it's a big study. i want to also mention that during the study they did not ask the people participating which of the sugar substitutes they were consuming. why not? >> because there are lots of different ones. it's hard in these kinds of studies. you're asking what do you remember having done. how much did you drink? >> it might be inaccurate. >> right. but the bigger reality is that diet sodas are only part of the puzzle. did they switch from regular soda to diet

but the reality is is it good enough switch? >> why is there a connection between one of the substitutes and things like stroke and your brain? >> i called the study author. he doesn't know either. this is an important issue. it could be that it's affecting the way your brain perceives sweetness. you put something hundreds of times sweeter than sugar in your mouth, and your brain says i tasted sweet j, but i didn't get sugar, so go back for more. and it changes our gut floor. >> important i do this. the beverage association said in a statement according to national institute of healths many risk factors can increase the individual's likelihood of developing stroke and

hypertension. they're saying there are a lot of possible reasons. >> the researchers control for many of the factors that the association mentioned, the reality is the it's not a good enough transition. i have better ideas. first, if you can go cold turkey, good for you. coffee and tea. if you want a beverage, the it's a way of getting around it. take sparkling water and mix it into your soda, you'll be surprised. the fact that it still tastes good enough. this option of diluting your soda with seltzer should be tried. they're going to watch this, hear it, and go pack to regular so soda. >> there's no debate. we know why sugary sodas are bad for you. they increase all the things i talked about. do g

friend of mine who wrote and directed the film. it's his feature debut. i produced the movie as well. >> jon hamm plays your brother, and you see him in other people. >> that's right. >> we don't really know the character i play is called josh norman. we don't really know whether some of the relationships he has in the movie are real or a figment of his imagination. that's part of his struggle and part of what he's dealing with in his mental illness. he's been abandoned. his brother left years ago and is a successful actor. he sends money. josh is left to fend for himself in a lot of ways. so part of that manifests in these relationships with people that he might be making up as projections of his brother who he's really looking for and looking to bring back into his life.

>> you must hav >> yes. i did. and it's not specific what he's suffering from because he doesn't have the resources. when we look at our society, people are struggling in ways to find the resources to be able to diagnose and treat properly because many different mental illnesses have many different manifestations. one of the things we're exploring in this film is that josh doesn't know exactly what he's up against, but he's someone who's holding on. he's somebody who is doing his best to be productive and be a relevant member of society in many ways. >> it's going to be fascinating. >> i was going to be a psychiatrist. i studied psychology. these things fascinate me. you're right. it's hard to diagnose these things. a lot of blurred lines. >> that's another segment. i want to hear that. >> i was telling him it's always good when gloria is a fan. what was your fair? >> when you did "asylum".
