thunderstorm warning for anne arundel and calvert counties. it's just below the severe threshold, producing small hail and gusty winds. also keeping a close eye on this thunderstorm developing around clinton, but this storm brought impressive hail to chevy chase, the rockville area. we're still tracking that moving east. a wide look at the radar, heavy rain north of fredericksburg, traveling over i-95, on its way to charles county. the threat for rain in d.c., as far as thunderstorms go, it really over at this point. isolated showers still around and rain will continue at times throughout the day tomorrow. 73 degrees right now. again, the storms now mainly south and east of the district moving out of the area. still can't rule out a shower overnight. but for the most part looking mainly dry now for t

river turn pike at the corner of ali lane. it's very busy. only a separation with woods and then you have the end unit just behind me, where the investigation is focused, where the victim lived, and that's where we've seen police going in and out all day. here's what's most concerning for the folks who live here. they tell me that it wasn't until late today that they learned of the killing. >> if it was something bad, that nobody was told. >> reporter: rebecca mosier lived here from two years, she moved from denver. it's been quiet, peaceful. until now. tonight, an uneasiness. >> i can't imagine somebody doing that. and there's a lot of people living in these apartments. >> reporter: one of the 210 units here is a crime scene. investigators suited up, taking pictures, going in and out of cong huu nguyen's apartment. thursday morning around 8:00, residents found him

77-year-old had trauma to his upper body. his apartment borders the busy little river turn pike. >> that's horrible. that doesn't make me feel -- because we're locked in. we have a gate. it's closed at 8:00. but my apartment is on the woods, and you walk right up from the road. police now asking for your help as they try to track down a killer. tonight police tell us the medical examiner is trying to determine the exact cause of death. meantime, we are hearing from the group that owns and runs this property. it's fairfax county, actually. the redevelopment and housing authority. they sent out a statement a short time ago, saying the safety of their residents is a top priority. so they're trying to reassure residents tonight. they're also reaching out to family members of the folks who live here, letting them know exactly what happened. doreen, we also can tell you that investigators will be here through the evening and potentially even looking into some of the security cameras that are on property. that may help them.

culver reporting. new details tonight about the french police officer who was killed in paris yesterday. and the gunman who shot him. a french police association says the officer was 37 years old. in 2015, he was one of the law enforcement people who responded to the terrorist attack at that paris nightclub. the gunman had a note praising isis next to his body yesterday. police are searching his house and questioning his family yesterday. the big question, how will thursday's attack impact the first round of the french presidential elections? that begins on sunday. two words no one in our area wants to hear, government shutdown. tonight president trump expressing confidence it can be avoided. but the white house is telling federal agencies to prepare for the possibility of a partial shutdown. blayne alexander is tracking the developments. >> so much of it has to do with what happens here on capitol hill. now, we're looking at some complicated talks next week, and further complicating those talks is a very

congress returns from recess tuesday night, so that means lawmakers only about three full days to pass that spending bill before friday's deadline. for president trump, the clock is ticking, one week to get a spending bill through congress or face a government shutdown. >> the government is coming along really well. lot of good things are happening, thank you. >> reporter: the budget talks now include a controversial sticking point, the president's long promised border wall. >> we're going to build the wall. mexico's going to pay for the wall. >> reporter: budget director mick mulvaney now insisting the spending plan include billions of dollars for the wall. even some pro-wall lawmakers are against the idea. >> let's get the government funded first and move on to the continuation of the debate. >> reporter: for the president to add another accomplishment before the end of his first 100 days next week. today he tweeted about the deadline, calling it a ridiculous standard,

matter how much i accomplish, pushing concern to provide health care by the end of next week. today a major win on the foreign front. >> we are very happy to have aya back home. >> reporter: securing the release of american aid worker aya hijazi, held prisoner in egypt for three years, despite efforts from president obama. even as president trump faces his biggest foreign challenge yet, north korea, by all indications, preparing for a nuclear test before the end of the weekend. and back to friday's federal funding deadline, the white house says that it's just part of the normal contingency plan to tell agencies to prepare for a possible government shutdown. so for the 500,000 federal workers in our area, all they can do this weekend and into next week is really just watch and hope for a deal before that deadline. >> blayne, nobody wants to see that happen again. thank you. we have not seen muc

former president barack obama since he and mrs. obama departed the capital on inauguration day. just a few vacation sightings. but mr. obama is about to hold his first public event. he plans to hold a town hall meeting on monday at the university of chicago. students and young community leaders are invited. mr. obama has said his post presidential goal is to encourage and support the nation's next generation of leaders. and this weekend, tens of thousands are expected on the national mall. it's the march for science. the main rally kicks off at 10:00 tomorrow morning near the washington monument. marchers head down constitution avenue toward the capitol. organizers are calling it a non-partisan event, but it may have been fueled by recent statements by president trump. the president has called for funding cuts to nih, has voized skepticism about climate change, has suggested vaccines cause autism. one organizers says there's been

we're seeing more and more damage caused by the storms that have moved through tonight. this is a live picture from chopper 4. this is lynnwood place in chevy chase, and as you can see, that's a very large tree on top of somebody's house there. we'll keep you posted on new developments with that storm damage as we get it. one week until government funding runs out, and suddenly the prospect of a shutdown seems more likely. the white house budget director indicating yesterday that obamacare insurance

could become a bargaining chip to force the funding of the border wall. the last government shutdown lasted for 16 days, cut off paychecks for thousands of federal workers and contractors in our area. shut down city services and closed federal tourist attractions such as the national zoo and the smithsonian. >> chuck todd joins us now from "meet the press." can you see any scenario in which democrats would agree to fund that wall between us and mexico? >> no. but i will be stunned if the republicans don't blink here. look, they have -- it is republicans in control of the senate, in control of the house, white house. i'm trying to think of the last time we had a shutdown threat with one party in control of those three entities. all the risk is on the republican side here. look, i think they wanted to see, could they find anybody, throw an offer on the table, see if they c -

they'd like a symbolic victory before a hundred days. is it on health care? doesn't look likely. just getting a vote through the house would be something. tax reform, well, he's going to throw out the proposal next week. having some money in the border wall would be something to say, hey, met the hundred-day deadline. so it doesn't look like it's going anywhere. and here's the thing, house republican leadership, they want nothing to do with these things. they've set the planned parenthood fight aside. like don't introduce any problems over here. because they know they have hard work on health care and tax reform, they don't want to make a government funding bill just as difficult. >> their priorities have nothing to do with president trump's. >> two different places. >> is trump going to do anything to bargain with them or get them to put a fire under them? >> i don't think he's going to do that. if you saw -- look at the attitude he took yesterday on health care. it would be great if we could get a vote, all right, maybe it's the week

there's still scattered thunderstorms on storm team 4 radar, south and east of washington now. continuing to push out of the area. take a look at this vantage point from our tower cam. absolutely gorgeous. a picture of the storm impacting upper marlboro. it's difficult to see, but there's also a rainbow there. i just posted this on my facebook and twitter pages. really beautiful storm. here you can see it on storm team 4 radar in prince george's county. we're seeing storms moving onto the eastern shore and starting to make their way into fredericksburg. for the rest of the evening hours, we're looking mainly dry and i can't rule out a shower overnight. the storm reports and reports of hail between 4 and 5:00 p.m., southern montgomery, prince george's county, even some reports in the district as well. i want to zoom in here. inch-size hail reported in silver spring. then we head to chevy chase and take a look at this report. major damage to a h

you're watching news4 at 6:00. first at 6:30, new developments in the case against a former teacher and coach charged with child pornography possession. and those who know him are horrified at the accusations. they're also angry. christopher speights worked with children in prince george's county for years. tonight he's in jail. he's being held without bond af

appearance. news4's meagan fitzgerald was there with the details. >> i'm angry. >> reporter: luther henry has dedicated his life to helping young kids, but today he feels betrayed. >> you know, a place for the kids to be safe for a little while. but something changed a little bit today. >> reporter: 34-year-old christopher speights was coaching basketball for the sports academy for five years, wednesday he was arrested and charged with possessing and distributing child pornography. >> you get betrayed. your kid is the most important thing. >> reporter: speights was also a substitute teacher and coach at bradbury elementary. maryland state police found more than 150 videos they say he uploaded to dropbox. the majority of them were child pornography. investigators say speights even admitted to the crime. prince george's county public schools said he cleared a background

for substitute teachers. they also releas apart quote, a behavior that brings harm to a ild will not be tolerated in any way in pgcps. over the past year, we have made significant changes to increase student safety and remain committed to ensuring a quality education and a safety environment for all students. >> i don't know what else could have been done. you do the background checks, you do all of this stuff. i just don't know. >> reporter: henry says some parents have serious concerns about speights' interaction with their children. >> i'm hearing there may have been pictures of kids. >> reporter: but he's determined to continue his mission of helping kids. >> i'm still fighting for them. at the end of the day i'm fighting for them. i'll be here for them. >> reporter: maryland state police say they have not been contacted by any victims but they are encouraging anyone who may have been harmed by speights to con ttact them right away. it was the scenef

received national attention. now a posh home in northeast d.c. is coming down. today crews began demolishing the home on woodland drive. the family all killed inside that home in may of 2015. darren wint is accused of that murder, set to go on trial in september. demolition is expected to be finished by monday. a woman from northern virginia is safe and home again after being imprisoned in cairo for three years. her name is aya hijazi. she grew up in falls chrch, graduated from george mason university. she holds dual citizenship. she and her husband established a charity for street children in cairo. they were arrested in 2014 on child abuse allegations that were widely dismissed as false by human rights groups and u.s. officials. president trump worked to win her release. >> we are very happy to have aya back home. and it's a

>> president obama's administration tried but failed to negotiate hijazi's release. the egyptian government changed his posture after its president met with mr. trump at the white house earlier this month. mr. obama's state department criticized egypt's humanitarian rights record and he was never invited on the white house. larry hogan sr suffered a stroke and died at the age of 88. funeral arrangements will be next week. larry hogan was a u.s. congressman and news4 reports on how he is being remembered and the impact he had on his son's political career. >> reporter: as a congressman, lawrence hogan sr became the first republican to call for the impeachment of president richard nixon. no man, not even the president of the united states is above the

larry hogan introduced his father at his inauguration and spoke of his courage, putting country before political party. >> he taught me more about integrity in one day than most men learn in a lifetime, and i am so proud to be his son. >> reporter: lawrence hogan sr served as prince george's county executive from 1978 until '82. former maryland governor says he and hogan had heated political arguments, but respected each other. and. >> and i said to him, it must be neat to see your son as governor. he ran for governor at one time as well and didn't make it. and he smiled a very, very big smile. >> reporter: jim east ep was the longest serving fire chief in prince george's county history. >> what always impressed me about former lawrence hogan was the fact that probably because he was a former fbi agent, he

public safety. >> i remember clearly at a good number of those, he would talk about his father and talk about his father with a bit of awe and clear respect. >> reporter: when he was running for governor, larry hogan once told me that sometimes voters would come up to him and thank him for his service and what he did for them. he said, i think they confused me with my father, lawrence hogan sr, because when he was in office, i was just a kid. reporting from prince george's county, chris gordon, news4. and there's another potential buyer for that manassas mobile home park that has been under threat of closure. east end mobile home park residents got eviction notices last summer after the owner could not afford to fix a leaking private sewer system. the city of manassas proposed buying that site, closing down the park and then fixing the sewer.

idea of buying that trailer park, and now a private buyer may be stepping forward with an offer of his own. james turner is an alexandria lawyer who owns two other trailer parks and tells news4, he's willing to spend a million bucks of his own money to do the repair work that is required. but some residents say they have reservations about that proposal. they would prefer that a non-profit take over their neighborhood. a hidden health hazard. new be ins reveal just how many of us may be living with a potentially deadly disease and not even know it. and long before youtube, a group of local high school kids took a home movie camera and made wild, goofy films that really got your attention. now they're getting to see their work on the big screen. and i'm still tracking some scattered thunderstorms on storm team 4 radar. but overnight tonight, cold air moves in and we're looking at a chilly and damp weekend. when you can expect rain coming up in your forecast.

more breaking news now and chopper 4 is right on top of it. this is an rv on fire on the interloop of the beltway, near georgia avenue. the smoke is so heavy it can be seen from miles away. it's backing up traffic on both sides of the beltway on a busy friday evening. no word on injuries but we'll keep watch on this and bring you updates as we get them. high schools call it spirit week. the themes are meant to build student unity and enthusiam but at one loudoun county high school, a controversy over a proposed america day threatened to divide the school and to blow up to social media. julie carey takes a look. >> reporter: they call themselves the young conservatives. to commemorate 9/11, they got permission to plant hundreds of flags on the loudoun county high school lawn, b

they learned the proposed america day wouldot the spirit week festivities, they got upset, took to social media and penned a letter to the editor to express frustration and make this accusation. >> i think the administration was afraid they would offend somebody with america day. >> i love this country and it's truly shameful. >> reporter: they decided to put up flirds, declaring monday red, white and blue day. one other high school jumped on board. only the administration says they got it wrong. >> this is something where the students if they had talked to mr. principals and advisers, they might have gotten perspective for what they were saying. >> reporter: feeling the heat, the student government members, who showed me their original calendar which included a freedom day, but the principal encouraged them to find more creative ideas. they settled on mythology monday. but the backlash at
