and is special ceremony for a fallen police officer. how you can still take part this weekend. it came through fast and didn't hit all of us but the storms we saw this afternoon did hit hard in parts of montgomery county. reports of marble and quarter size hail and dozens of trees came down. amelia draper will have our forecast in a minute. first, jackie bensen is live in a hard hit section of tacoma park. jackie? >> reporter: crews are here trying to repair the damage from when a utility pole snapped in half after a tree fell on it. there are lights out at this intersection and repairs are going to take some time. >> that tree came just crashing

down. >> reporter: people in takoma park say they have not seen thunderstorm damage like this in years. this store was left in tatters by what witnesses describe as marble-size hail. >> we just hear like an amber alert sound and then we see big flashes of light. the whole street just lit up. >> at r.k. automotive, by standers were pulled in as hail and wind created a blackout effect. they couldn't see out of the window. >> you can't see anything because it was so fast and the rain was coming down so fast it was like a flash flood and then the tree pulled the power line, the whole thing swung and then just exploded. >> reporter: the enormous tree that fell causing this damage originally stood just inches from a home. if it had fallen in the opposite direction, it would have crushed the house. older neighborhoods saw damage from huge

these images from chopper 4 show what it looked like from the air. residents of jackson avenue in takoma park say at least six large trees fell on homes and cars parked along the street. now, the cleanup could take a while and it could play a role in a special event taking place right here tomorrow. it's takoma park celebration of earth day. live in takoma park, jackie bensen, news4. >> thank you, jackie. the storms that brought down the trees are gone now but a weather alert day here on nbc 4. amelia, how soon before we have more rain moving back in. well, pockets of rain tomorrow but more widespread rain impacting the area. take a look at what we're tracking in the immediate area. pockets of heavier rain in parts of prince george's county. scattered showers out there and then as we look back

not partisan but the president's policies on the environment will be in the spotlight tomorrow. >> clearly there's a political context and that includes the election of donald trump as president, the deployment of scott pruitt to run the epa. it's a political event that claims not to be partisan. let's see how they walk that line. >> tomorrow's rally begins at 10:00 a.m. the ground will open at 8:00 and the march is scheduled for 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. chopper 4 over the scene of a shooting tonight in lorton, virginia, along a strip mall. several restaurants in that strip, an i-hop, domino's, it's all nearby. one person shot into a crowd and people scattered. so far, we only know of one person who was shot. that person is expected to survive.

figure out who murdered aior retirement community in fair max county. thursday morning, residents found this man dead inside his apartment at the little river glen senior center in fairfax. the victim's apartment borders the busy turnpike. >> that doesn't make me feel good because we're locked in. we have a gate. it's closed at 8:00. but my apartment is on the woods and you walk right up from the roa road. >> the medical examiner determined that he died from upper trauma to the body. police are hoping that $25,000 reward will help lead to a killer in prince george's county. the victim was just 17 years old but police didn't know that when they were first called to a home in forestville on

she had been stabbed and was looking for help and didn't have any i.d. with her. the woman who opened the door doesn't want to be identified but told us she can't stop reliving the moment when a dying girl knocked on her door. >> when i lay down at night, the only thing i think about that keeps me up at night is this keeps replaying the same thing, that knock on the door. >> it was her mother who saw the picture and instantly knew the girl in the police sketch was her daughter. police say knowing her identity now is going to move the investigation forward. police arrested a loudoun county school teacher at school today for allegedly driving drunk to work. megan daivo was a sixth grade language arts teacher. it was alerted that she might be intoxicated. officers determined that she drove to school drunk. they charged her with dui

open container of alcohol at school. debo was held on a $2,000 bond. prince george's county schools will keep an eye on mold. after a new round of tests, it's just a precaution. the districts ordered tests last month after students and teachers there said they weren't getting sick. initial tests showed only one classroom with elevated mold levels after a series of repairs and adjustments to improve air quality, officials ordered more tests this month and found levels have dropped below federal guidelines. prince george's county first responders will be on the basketball course this weekend supporting a fallen officer. jacai kol s jacai colson was killed in a shooting but his memory is still

this is chopper 4 earlier day. just beautiful there. after the severe thunderstorms move through. a lot of damage in parts of montgomery, prince george's counties as well as the district. so now as we go to the headlines, chilly and rainy for the weekend but new information coming in suggesting sounday is looking mainly dry. no severe weather at all. it's just going to be a chilly, cloudy and light rain. after that, a big warmup. that's friday on into next weekend. we're talking about highs near 90. right now, most of us in the 60s. 70s out there in culpeper and leesburg. 65 in gate thers gaithersburg. it will be with us for the majority of the day tomorrow. the good news about this rain, it will bring our pollen levels down, especially the

despite the rain today continue to come in at high. mold spores coming in at moderate. a bit of a relief for the allergy sufferers. 62 degrees and we don't warm throughout the day. we actually cool. by lunchtime, we're around 60. 57 at 4:00 p.m. and 53 at 7:00. you need the rain gear and probably the long sleeves under the rain jake kesnack jacket. notice the rain to the south. what happens on sunday, we'll have rain in the metro area at 9:00 a.m. most of you in parts of southern maryland, fredericksburg, that could be a soggy day on sunday but notice how everybody else is dry but cloudy for the midday and afternoon hours. so yard work will be better on sunday. earth day tomorrow, unfortunately, definitely need the rain gear. have that small
