today is earth day. thousands of folks are expected to descend on washington for the march on science. demonstrators will march from the washington monument, down constitution avenue to the foot of capitol hill. this is meant to be political, not partisan. the idea is in response to what some say is president trump's environment environmentalpolicy. but some say there's been an empty science sentiment on both sides of the aisle. >> the these have been enacted by people on both sides of the aisle for a long time. but acting like this is a new thing is giving too much credit to the local administration. >> hundreds of other rallies are planned around the world. expect road closures near the mall today. for a full list, go to the nbc washington app. new this morning, vice president mike pence is in australia as partf

tour of asia. he spoke to a group of business leaders there. and earlier today he held a news conference with the prime minister, prime minister malcolm turnbull, where he said the u.s. will honor a refugee resettlement deal with australia. it's a deal that president trump called dumb and caused a rift earlier this year between the two countries. this time next week, president trump will mark his 100th day in office and his legislative agenda to show off his progress. a big announcement on tax reform will come on wednesday. the house republicans will move forward on a house compromise. and next friday is the deadline to get a spending bill through congress to avoid a government shutdown. and the fpresident's first 100 days will be the topic on "meet the press." chuck todd will interview nancy pelosi

he'll also speak to marco rubio. that's tomorrow at 10:30 right after ""news4 today"." and after two years of construction and detours, the massachusetts avenue ramp near 395 south opens today. it allows traffic to drive directly onto the highway instead of using the third street ramp. and also good news for drivers going east. for folks going west on massachusetts avenue, you'll see delays. this is part of a project not going to wrap up until 2019. it took overtime, but the caps beat toronto last night. they now lead that series. >> that's right. the caps are now up 3-2, but the win did come unfortunately with than injury to captain alex to eve

demolition is underway in d.c.

happened twon the home on northwest on friday. the parents and their 10-year-old son and a housekeeper were all killed inside the home in may of 2015. and the suspect there, aaron nguyen, is set to go on trial in september. the home sold months after that brutal killing. demolition is expected to be finished by monday. organizers expect thousands. the mayor wants people to come out to the second cannabis festival here in d.c. it had a big crowd turnout. this is being held in the parking lot of rnk stadium today. if you are headed there today, you cannot consume marijuana at the festival. you'll be able to learn how to grow your own and buy paraphernalia. it is legal to possess marijuana in the district, b

well, we continue with the rain showers moving through our area. unfortunately, we'll have quite a bit of rain through the week and weekend. we'll time it out for you and let you know when you can get outside to enjoy some cloudy weather. but at least dry weather. we'll be talking about that coming up in a few minutes. i'm melissa mollet with a look at first 4 traffic and metro this weekend. safetrack surge 14 is still underway in phase one. so we're talking about the green line. this means college park and greenbelt stations will still be closed lasting through next weekend, so april 29th. they do have the shuttle buses running back and forth. as far as day service, regular weekend service during the day on orange, blue and

77-year-old man. this happened at a senior retirement community. this happened thursday morning at the little river glen senior retirement center. there the residents found the man dead inside his apartment. that's located on barker court in fairfax county. the victim's apartment borders that busy stretch of road. >> that doesn't make me feel very good because we are locked in. we have a gate. but my apartment is wood and he walked up right from the road. >> he died of trauma to the upper body. the medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death. meantime, police are asking anyone with any information to step forward. bikers and walkers will have a new trail network in leesburg. ten officials will officially unveil new signage for the trail at 9:00 a.m. in fox ridge park. the blue and green

temperatures out there are about as high as you'll get today. most temperatures will remain in the 50s during the day. so we'll fall a couple more degrees. 61 in the d.c. area. but on the shenandoah valley, we are into the 50s. 62 in war renton. 59 in baltimore. as you wake up this morning, temperatures will drop, but we are going to see some rain showers. we're seeing rain showers out there. we won't see the thunderstorms that we saw last night, but we'll continue to see rain move through our area. and it's possible to be heavy at times. so we have batches of rain to be dealing with. so this will move on through with a little dry spot there, but then this moves through the area. and that will be later on this afternoon. so it's been heavier rain, maybe a few thunderstorms. so wet and cloudy through the rest of the day with temperatures in the 50s. so let's time it out for you, we could hit a dry spot about noon. then more showers come in through the evening. so if

releasing a sketch of her, family members say they knew who it was. and a teacher is arrested at school for allegedly driving drunk to work. megan debo was a sixth grade teacher at sterling middle school. an employee at the school alerted a school resource officer yesterday morning that debo may be intoxicated. officers say she drove to school drunk and charged her with dui and another count for possessing an open container of alcohol at school. debo was held on a $2,000 bond. funeral plans will be announced next week for maryland governor larry hogan's father. he was the prince george's county executive. >> news4 shows us how he's being remembered and the impact he had on his son's political career. >> reporter: as a congressman, lawrence hogan sr. became the first republican to call for the

alexandria will look to replace the town's 200-year-old system. the bill was signed into law yesterday. the city will replace the sewers at all the overhaul sites by the year 2025. alexandria originally planned to address three first, leaving the businessest to be dealt with until the mid-2030s. and maryland is warning people that cleaning up litter is a waste of time and money. the department of transportation
