federal building dating back to the 1990s this is just one more example of that. it's not the most egregious thing the secret service has imposed on the public particularly around the white house it's one more incident moving the public away and restricting further access. >> let's be clear what we're talking about, the national mall side of the white house. east street is the road that used to run from 17th to 15th street and after 9/11 the road itself was closed but there's sidewalks on that section and one of the sidewalks is next to the fence on the mall side of the white house that's the sidewalk they now say can no longer be open if you are a tourist visiting you have to be across the street about 25 feet if you want to the take a picture. the secret service has a

>> what you will look at the entire public safety cluster. mayor bouzer has completely changed the leadership of both the 9-1-1 call center and fire department and d.c. department and communications as well. she's clearly trying to put out a good message, smiley face on the public safety because she knows it's going to be a big issue. how it impacts residents, easier accountability. you have assistant chief now only over seen three. the south side, gets, you know the is the tough side. that's 7-1-6. those are where you have the highest number of violent crimes. homicide particularly. rather than having san assistant chief who is trying to focus citywide for those kind of areas they can narrow their focus and everybody believes that will lead to greater accountali

i new on-ramp is good news between the convention center and nation -- entering a new phase. this new onramp is now open who is it going to help. >> this is mostly good news in that people who are trying to get out of downtown d.c. are going find it easier to do so. those heading to north west virginia and people who want to go to north west county. massachusetts avenue leaving from the convention center for the past few years you've had to go through this little -- >> nightmare. >> -- okay. >> it's been a horrible nightmare. >> to get to the 3895. you would have to go down third street. now on saturday they opened a new ramp in the middle of massachusetts avenue so now east

south will go straight on massachusetts anded down like you're going under dupont circle. very easy and stream line to free up people who want to continue on massachusetts avenue to get to route 50 will find it easy to do that as well. the down side are people going east bound on massachusetts avenue. in the past two years have been able to turn left on third and hit the southwest 395 tunnel. that has gonna way. >> you have to drive this to appreciate what you're saying. and we do. when's it going to be done? >> well so this opened yesterday. and this new ramp. the next phase will come in october of this year and that's when that entire intersection on ground that you see orange cones and detour signs, that will all be gone and it will be back to two lanes each direction. the

project 2019 is the finish. >> part of the problem massachusetts and new york avenue apart from the construction every city block major road way has horrific traffic problems particularly in the rush hours morning and night. the city is growing, that's the good news, the bad news is you can't get to where you want to go. >> yeah. moving d.c.'s homeless shelter to apartment buildings to how's homeless families part of a plan to close the d.c. general shelter. for years the city paid tens of millions to put up motels but the administration is accepting builds from landlords willing to lease their building. the mayor is taking a lot of heat from residents and from the council for building shelters throughout the city. so what makes this a better solution? >> well what makes it better than the current solution is what you pointed to, the ten o

millions of dollars that the district pays out annually to house hundreds of families in motels. we've been housing hundreds of families in motels for years. there's homeless families living in these motels for more than a year or two. >> about $8,000 a day for something for the city. >> incredibly expensive because in d.c. unlike maryland, the law is you have the right to shelter. if you come into this town and are homeless you have a right to shelter and they will provide it for you in d.c. and a lost people take advantage of that. so the bouzer administration said let's just lease entire apartment buildings. this was hot button issue. building these family shelters. in all eight boards. that meant resistance from neighborhoods who don't want them in the neighborhood. as well as developers. this good

problem because they want these one block from metro station. >> if there are problems with developers and the mayor has problem, other issues about favoring some developers, if they suddenly own the apartment buildings and get city contract it's just a very difficult thing for her. and the community really doesn't want homeless people living in their neighborhoods and you're going to see a lot of opposition in that. it actually goes into election year. >> do republicans face a ground swell of resistance in november. while analysts saw signs of a trump effect in close races like in kansas and georgia others say all you need to do is read the tea leaves here in our own backyard. specifically race for county cork. >> yeah the democratic won there.

virginia. that and loudoun county on the edge of northern virginia. so democrats are like this is great. but the chairmanman of the republican party say the democratic are just hoping it means something. we have a very interesting race for governor in virginia this year. ed gillespie leading the republicans to win. the governor is being challenged by one-term member of congress who is trying to be the bernie sanders of virginia so there's a lot going on. some are saying it will be a referendum on trump. with the republican convention in cleveland there was no republicans for trump there they were all for marco rubio, ted cruz, jed bush, you name it, they just weren't for trump and they weren't that excited about trump, of course he lost to hillary clinton. i'm not sure it's a referendum at all. >> mark, do

any chance at all that the president will stick his finger into this race? >> well, i think he will weigh in weather by twitter or by personal appearances, absolutely. question is, does he do personal appearances in the southern part where he's more popular or in northern virginia where the president is less popular. one interesting to note about the prince william race is that the republican outraised and spent democrats 6/1. more than $200,000 raised by the republicans and $30,000 raised by is the democratic. we will see a lot of money coming into this virginia race. >> the republicans don't really want trump to cast a shadow over the virginia race. the virginia race has a virginia election.

tomorrow, former fox host said to appear on his news podcast available to premium subscribers on his website. will be the first time after an investigation of allegations of sexual harassment. the arlington count board approved its 2018 budget it calls for higher property taxes to help increase budget for the public schools as well as metro and affordable housing. if you are a home owner in arlington county you should expect to see higher tax rate 1.5% the new budget is more $1.24 billion. they also have a new land lease for elementary school that will replace existing parking lot. will open in september 2019 and will have pretty unique features like a

the washington, d.c. for todaymay's column i will ta about how churches are finding new and innovative ways to raise money to do what they do. fewer people in d.c. area are going to church. church a n teddance is down and fora lot of congregations, particularly older ones in the region get most of their funding from tithes. this is a church called the church at claredon. it's a baptist congregation ten years ago was trying to figure out ways to keep the doors open while maintaining the old traditional sanctify yourry so they partnered to build apartments on top of the church. other church is arlington temple united method toist chief in rosalynn they came in the 60s

office workers in the area and so they opened a church. they realized the best way to keep it going financially was to put something on the bottom floor and after a long time of trying to figure out who their ground floor tenant would be they were finally approached by a gas station. so today this might be the only church you can drive into and buy gas from. this allows them to not only keep their doors open and keep doing what they're doing but provide opportunities for other people to live or to work or even buy a tank of gas. i know when i was growing up i would dread getting dressed to go somewhere to go to church as a kid, i can imagine couple people here in their jammies on sunday morning services. >> great. services on sunday morning.
