>> and i'm erika gonzalez. we have breaking news beginning on this midday. it is now over almost an entire day after corporal steven ballard was killed in delaware. the suspect was killed by police. that happened only an hour and a half ago. the man was holed up inside the house after shooting ballard, a delaware state trooper, yesterday. this all started at a wawa. ballard was investigating two men. the other man was taken into custody, but the one accused of shooting ballard took off. ballard is from bowie, maryland. he was 32 years old. the red line is a mess this morning. megan mcgrath is at the metro center station with this story. here's

>> red line -- >> reporter: this downtown ambassador did her best to direct riders to shuttle buses. >> metro need to pay me. >> reporter: in what was a frustrating and confusing rush hour on the red line. both exiting at metro center thought they could grab a bus on the corner of 12th, but they say nothing ever came. they eventually walked over to the gallery place station. >> been out here for about a half hour. i'm supposed to be to work at 7:45. >> reporter: a report of smoke in the tunnels suspended red line service between gallery place and dupont circle during the height of rush hour this morning. no injuries, but responding firefighters did detect a slight haze at the faragate north station. >> we asked someone. they said go to 12th and

then they said come to 12th and g. here we are. we're supposed to get some shuttle buses and they haven't come yet. >> reporter: the suspension lasted an hour. while inconvenient, many riders are hopeful safe track improvements will make the metro system better. >> i think it is a great system. i think public transportation is great, but we need to figure out better ways to deal with these disciples types of issues so we can get people moving. >> reporter: an ageing rail fastener is to blame for all the problems here today. red line service suspended for a period in this one stretch. then it was restored with single tracking. then it was suspended again. now it has been restored, but we still have single tracking between faragate north and judiciary square. we're still seeing an impact here in this stretch of the red line. back to you guys in the studio.

causing quite a tense situation on metro last night. metro transit police say she had a knife and was on some kind of illegal substance when she started to argue with another passenger. it happened around 9:00. the woman was arrested at white flint station. about 30 minutes later. no one was injured. metro expects to have full bus and rail service amid threats of a sick-out from workers. metro employees asked for a sick day friday and every single one of them got rejected. metro's leadership and the union are locked in a bitter contract dispute. it is so bad that sources tell us that workers are telling their supervises they're going to skip work friday. according to their contract, union members are not permitted to strike. let's change gears now.

he was 37 years old. police also tell us they made no arrests and there are no suspects in the case. fire crews are still at the scene of the five-alarm blaze in college park. it broke out on monday inside a building that was under construction. according to our news partners at wtop, there are still four hot spots that keep flaring up. crews expect to leave the scene later today after days of fighting the fire. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. how are you getting ready? this could be the series the caps look back on. they're playing the defending stanley cup champs, the penguins, tonight. >> the penguins are the same team that knocked out the caps from the playoffs last year in the same round no less. they are playing here in d.c. at the verizon center. you'll probably see a lot of red down

someone who was having a heart attack. shomari stone talked to the hero and to the experts who are now singing her praises. >> you know, it makes me feel good to know that you helped someone else. >> reporter: heather was walking to robinson secondary school when an elderly man suddenly dropped on the sidewalk in fairf fairfax. >> just out for a morning walk or whatever. right about here he collapsed and fell over. >> reporter: the 18-year-old says she didn't have a pulse when she checked. she immediately called 911 around 8:00 in the morning. >> another woman came up. >> reporter: they both did cpr. the woman did chest compressions. heath heather mouth to mouth. moments later firefighters arrived. >> we confirmed he was in cardiac arrest. he went through our normal procedures to continue care. >> reporter: heather helped save e

take a look at this damage in northwestern arkansas left behind by a powerful line of storms. knocked power out for thousands of people yesterday. as many as 50 power poles were taken down. there were also several reports of trees falling on homes. the powerful line of storms will reignite tomorrow across the mid mississippi valley and cause severe weather. look out for that if you are traveling anywhere this weekend in that area. >> we don't have anything like that to look forward to for the weekend, do we?
