temperature wise, we're in the 80s right now, but say hello to the 90s tomorrow, record high temperatures. plus a live picture of the national mall as thousands get ready to flood the city for another weekend rally. first at 4:00, an escape prisoner on the run and the search is intensifying. i'm leon harris filling in for chris lawrence. >> i'm pat lawson muse. the frantic search has been going on for six hours, in and around the jessop, maryland area. the suspect is a 28-year-old, who was serving time for attempted murder. he escaped from custody while be transferred to a state mental facility. we're starting to learn more about the suspect and just how he got away. chris gordon has been on the scene all day and joins us live outside the hospital center. chris, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, leon and pat, police say that he

this parking lot this morning. they don't know if the escape was planned or impromptu, but they believe he should be considered dangerous. they have been looking with search teams. they have been out looking for him all day. armed police follow k-9 units, through the wednesday and along railroad tracks. a helicopter flies overhead, looking for 28-year-old david m. watson, the prisoner who escaped this morning. watson is serving time for attempted murder in delaware. watson faces charges of attempting to murder police officers. he was being transported here to clifton t. perkins hospital for evaluation. two detention officers were in the white van when watson escaped at 9:40 this morning. >> a guard opened the door after the van stopped in the parking lot, and watsoho

only occupant, pushed the guard to the ground and ran into the woods. we did find handcuffs and a waist chain on the scene. >> reporter: police with guns drawn, searched a truck, looking for the escapee. at this asphalt plant nearby, a supervisor tells me they spotted a white van. >> when way was he heading? >> reporter: police say watson was wearing all white, sweat pants and a thermal shirt, which searchers have recovered. they don't think he has a weapon. there are a lot of industrial parks in the area. some of the businesses have been searched. >> we got a phone call from howard county police department that there was an escaped prisoner. that's what -- so the helicopter's been flying around ever since. >> have you seen anyone? >> haven't seen a soul. >> reporter: now,s

that line to be omitted on some d.c. employees' paychecks. the director of the d.c. department of human resources tells us the problem dates back as long as ten years and spans all d.c. agencies and has impacted hundreds of current, former, and retired d.c. government workers. >> i am so sorry about it, because i can imagine what kind of a blow this would be to someone, especially someone who is living from paycheck to paycheck. what i would say to them is, this is the right thing to do, because what we're doing is looking out for their financial interest long-term and that's retirement. it would be a bigger blow to get to retirement age and find out it's not there. >> reporter: mayor bowser has authorized the hiring of an outside accounting firm to audit the system and sdrm the scope of the problem. it would

it's going to be a busy weekend on the national mall. thousands are expected for the people's climate march, that's tomorrow. marchers will be heading from the capitol to the white house, starting at 11:00 a.m., all of this on the heels of last week's march for science. organizers tried to combine the two efforts, but the science group wanted to have a less political message. sir richard branson will take part in tomorrow's march. he told "the washington post" that the world is moving towards clean energy, with the u.s. or without it. >> china has got a clean energy revolution going on. millions of jobs are being created in the clean energy. europe's got a clean energy revolution. >> the climate march is also trying to bring in more progressive movements in the workplace and those who want a $15 minimum wage. if you want to get to that ma

expectations if you were a fan of the book by david eggers. it starts emma watson as a young woman who goes to work for the largest social media company in the world called the circle. and that company is run by a steve jobs figure played by tom hanks, who seems likeable and charismatic on the outside, but is a little manipulative with a hidden agenda going on. it's very timely themes and fascinating in that regard. regarding transparency versus privacy and how much we're willing to give up. and emma watson's character realizes, she might be sacrificing a lot of her own privacy and the privacy of the entire world. as it goes on, it poses questions that it doesn't really answer. it changes the ending, where the book had a cynical ending, this one has the happy hollywood ending that tries to have it both ways in the end. i

facebook is fighting fake news with a big crackdown. the social media giant is pulling the plug on tens of thousands of accounts. according to a new company report, the bogus profiles are created on facebook and can be used by governments, most of the fake profiles are not run by social bots, but by people. and the report says governments can use the accounts to manipulate political opinion. the goal may not be to promote one candidate or cause but to fuel tension and create chaos. the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the mt. vernon community school is set for tomorrow. organizers are setting up at the mt. vernon community center and there are thousands of items all available. funds raised by this benefit -- by this will benefit the school in many

26-year-old zondra smith was arrested for trying to steal from the apple store at tyson's corner center on wednesday. security found her allegedly putting items inside her purse, but the details of that february crime are even more disturbing. it happened at the true religion store. police believe it involved two young children, a baby and a toddler. our northern virginia bureau reporter david culver is reviewing surveillance video that appears to show a woman stuffing clothing in her baby's stroller, and apparently handing the clothes to her toddler, who then tests the store's sensors by walking by them repeatedly. smith has not been charged for the crime. david culver will share that video at 5:00. you've got to see this to believe it, folks. that's in our next hour. and in case you haven't noticed, this is kind of a big day here at nbc4. welcome aboard leon ha

shutdown averted, with just hours to go, lawmakers on capitol hill pass a plan that will keep the government funded and open at least for another week. and that brings us now to day 99 of the trump administration. >> nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker joins us now. they've been touting a list of successes, but what should we expect to see in the second hundred days? >> thanks for having me. there have been some successes and some failures. the president touting the fact that he got neil gorsuch on the supreme court. he's reversed a number of obama-era policies, but he's also had some failures, of course over health care, being the biggest one. i think you're going to see a new strategy, particularly as it relates to getting big pieces of legislatioas

right now, nearly a thousand high school students from across virginia are gathering in loudoun county for a leadership conference. they'll be hearing from students who have overcome enormous obstacles and one of them is trevor la master. we introduced you to him three years ago. he's an amputee who was a two-sport athlete. julie carey checked back in with him to see how things have been going. >> regional place winners three times. >> reporter: trevor la master pointing out the plaques in the wrestling room where his name will soon be added. he's amongst the best here. his picture already on the department's wall of

when we first met trevor as a freshman, he was the starting jv la crosse goalie and had this to say about his motivation. >> one of my biggest pet peeves is when people do have, oh, he has one leg, he can't do this. that just makes me fiery. that's when i go do whatever i can to show them wrong. >> trevor was born missing a bone in one leg. at age 10, he and his parents made a life-changing decision. his right leg was amputated so he could be fitted with a prosthetic, that would allow him to pursue his passion -- sports. he's never looked back. >> definitely not. probably the best decision my family and i ever made. never looked back, it's changed my life as an athlete, and just as a person. >> another big change, getting a blade-runner prosthetic after his freshman year. >> and it made a huge difference with playing la crosse. i was able to run normally, which made me a lot faster, helped with

conditioning. >> diamond, diamond! >> reporter: now on varsity la crosse, he's the backup goalie. it's wrestling where he's made his mark. in his senior year, he came in fourth in the state tournament. those who might have once questioned him, stopped a while ago. this weekend he'll share his story at the leadership conference. >> that the obstacles in their life doesn't define who they are or what they can accomplish. it just defines how they need to overcome that. whatever that obstacle is, whatever that challenge is put in your life, it was put in your life for a reason, and that's to overcome it and become a stronger person. >> reporter: his future after graduation, he'll study engineering at virginia tech, where he'll no longer be recognized as an allstate athlete, but he's thinking about doing a run or triathlon when we gets there, just to make it clear nothing stands in his way. i'm julie carey, news4. >> we can all learnom
