angie goff following the path of deadly storms. good morning. >> really serious situation now. we know now 14 people lost their lives across four states in the south and the midwest. take a look at the extent of this damage. we have houses completely flattened. this after a weekend where tornadoes hit several small towns in the eastern part of the state. four people in texas died because of this. trees ripped from the ground. here is one of those twisters that was caught on camera. flooding was another big thing. jay gray is live later in this hour. he says there's a chance for more severe weather that we're tracki tracking. >> thank you, angie. following a developing story from capitol hill where lawmakers have reached a deal on a spending plan to avoid a governme

the $1 trillion plan would fund the government through september. it does not include spending for a border wall but does set aside spending for border security measures. news 4's tracie potts will have more on where the process goes from here coming up a little bit later. immigration is front and center in many cities, including the district. several people will be marching in may day demonstrations. protesting against donald trump's effort to move it. today has become a rallying point for immigrants. here they'll gather at noon and in mount pleasant. a political issue over the last eight years. former first lady michelle obama focused on regulations to make school lunches

justin finch is explaining why the trump administration wants to roll back some of these. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. it comes down to costs. today agriculture secretary sunny purdue is here. we talked about school lunches nationwide. that is it set for 12:30 or so. an early report says they want schools to have more free rein in how they follow federal school lunch guidelines. for years some republicans have had concerns about school lunch program costs and regulation. for example, nbc reports they got more than a million in school funding. they expect a roll back. you may recall that michelle obama called for stricter nutritional guidelines and also for more hlt

speed caused a deadly motorcycle accident in prince george's county. a 32-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his bike, skidded and collided with the guardrails. this happened yesterday evening in largo. he was riding with a group of motorcyclists when it happened. maryland state police have seen a spike in motorcycle crashes since the weather became nicer. a tacoma park police officer is being streeted after a man runs over his foot. the man left a mental health facility and jumped into a car and ran over an officer's foot. two area police officers will be added to the national law enforcement officer's memorial. prince william county officer ashleigh winton was killed hours

prince george's county police officer was killed by friendly fire during a shootout in front of the police station in landover. both of their names are added to it. 5:08 now. it is time to rock the red like you really mean it. we always mean it. tonight the caps are at risk of going down 3-0. that would mean they have to win four games in a row. to get fans excited they're holding a pep rally. they'll have representatives at prince williams county. the school showed its spirit with a big event in the gymnasium. do you know how much sugar you eat every day? if you're not logging it, creating a diary, then you probably eat more than you think. that's why this week we are going sugar free on "news 4 today." >> we're trying to put a limit

chaser. you can see a wedge-shaped tornado as it crosses interstate 20. the damage is 35 miles long and stretches from one end of the county to another. search and rescue teams have been going house to house looking for anyone who may still be trapped. nbc's jay gray joins us with more on the deadly storms sweeping the south. >> jay's live in missouri where severe thunderstorms trigger heavy flooding this week end. jay, good mornings. >> reporter: hey there, eun and aaron. this building was pushed off its foundation, pulled apart by raging flood waters. we know that more than a dozen were killed in storms through the weekend. that's from the deep south all the way through the midwest. tornadoes and, again, those damaging thunderstorms that left so much water in so many areas. in the missouri area where they've seen historic flooding we've gotoa

locked down, even some highways blocked by either debris or still high water and there's a very real concern for so many across the strike zone that the worst of it may not be over. there's a chance of more rain, more severe weather over the next couple of days. so many try to clean up all the mess that is left behind after these storms, they've got to keep an eye on the clouds to see what may be coming next. we'll continue to monitor things for now that's the latest. aaron, eun, back to you. >> turn to our forecast now. >> sheena parveen is standing by. rain and storms, sheena? >> yes, we are. most of your day will be dry. you may not even think that that's going to happen today as we go through the afternoon because most of these are holding off until late afternoon and early evening. we are on the dry side. there is that line of storms that pass through texas that we showed you video of. that's all heading in this direction. we have the threat for severe or

afternoon, late afternoon, early evening. most of the evening commute will be dry. severe storms possible where you see the red shaded area, even yellow. in the enhanced risk today. damaging winds, heavy rain briefly and hail and lightning. we can never rule out an isolated tornado. as far as your commute goes, dry, 67 degrees. by the afternoon we'll see the approaches of storms to our west. >> good morning. right now, again, just a reminder in silver springs, crash 11,800 block. very close to connecticut and near veirs mill road. we have downed wires. we are moving slowly there. 270 from frederick down to the spur, you can see we don't have any big problem there. everything looking quite good southbound. northbound is the same situation. aaron? >>

5:15. "news 4 today" goes sugar free. this is not going to be easy. >> i was going to say, people are so mean putting a big plate of chocolate donuts in front of me face when i'm trying not to eat it. this could make a big difference. a recent report from the u.s. department of agriculture, the hhs reported on average the u.s. diet is low in vegetables, fruits and whole grains and high in sodium, saturated fault and added sugars. >> we're tackling with added sugars. 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar a day. some like the american heart association advocates for even less than that. >> i'm going to go with that standard which means 10 grams of sugar for me, which is a lot. 6 teaspoons a day for women, nine for men. about 25 to 40 grams a day for people. you know what, it

much because it adds up so quickly. cutting out sugar may be tough. increased consumption of sugar has led to diabetes and heart disease. >> we'll report about the effects sugar can have on the body and brain. she starts us off. >> reporter: sugar can be very tempting. it's everywhere and it can be hard to avoid. there are the naturally occurring sugars, the ones in fruits and some grains and vegetables, and then there's the added sugar. dr. nicole earhardt is an endocrinologist at george washington university hospital. >> sodas, snack packs that have added sugars. your yogurt has added sugars. all those types of things like a yogurt may appear healthy but it's not healthy with 28 grams of sugar. >> reporter: i started paying attention to sugar because a family

me at risk. when eun and aaron signed up for the sugar challenge, i joined them. >> i eat what i want to eat. >> i don't worry about it. i should be. i'm aware. my doctor has told me. to quit cold turkey like we're supposed to, i'm a little worried. i'm a little worried i'm going to hit somebody. >> that is what happens if you cut sugar out, you get pretty cranky for a week or two. >> you've given up some sugar. >> i'm warning you. >> you're telling me i can't eat chocolate or drink wine, might be a little problematic. >> i'm a little concerned. at least we're in it together, right? >> absolutely. all the way. >> i am going to keep a video diary on facebook. make sure to follow me. >> so many of you on my facebook page said you're in it with us. once again, the limit is about 40 grams a day on a 0

track work. >> reporter: these are the newest changes. the around the clockwork zone is happening on the green line. it's happening on green belt and college park. that means there will be no service on those stations. the trains are expected to run on a near normal station at all other stations. no yellow rush bus trains. the next safe track will shut down five orange stations starting on may 15th. 5:35. college park station is back open following safe track work. not all repairs on the blue and yellow lines are finished. news partner wtop reports metro canceled repair plans because of undisclosed delays.

"news 4 today" starts now. we begin on capitol hill where congressional leaders have reached a deal to avoid a government shutdown this week. >> let's get right to news 4's tracie potts. tracie, what did lawmakers agree to here? >> reporter: they agreed to spend a lot of money on defense but not as much as the president wanted. there will be no money for a border wall. there are other things some democrats wanted to see and republicans as well, border security, but, again, not as much as the president

health care for coal miners and a lot of money for medical research. $2 billion. the president did not get the big thing he wanted which was the border wall. this is a permanent deal if passed by both houses. it will be a permanent deal that will take us through the end of the fiscal year to the end of september. >> what's the latest on the republican effort to repeal and replace the affordable care act? >> reporter: that will come up this week. the president wants to try this. the democrats don't want to go to the table. the sticky point is pre-existing conditions. the president says point blank, they will be guaranteed in the bill. the language is they'll be guaranteed depending where you live. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill. thank you. immigration will be the focus in many cities, including the district today. thousands ofpl

demonstrations. they're protesting president trump's efforts to boost deportation. union members traditionally march on the 1st for workers' rights. this day it became a rallying point for immigrants. here in washington people will gather at noon at lamott park. those demonstrators may need to find a parking spot somewhere near the national mall. >> come this summer finding a free parking spot is going to be difficult. molette green is live near the tidal basin to explain. molette? >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys. on any given day you're already hard-pressed to find an available space on the national mall. add in parking meters to the mix and oh, boy does it get interesting. now when the sun comes up this morning, you might get to see those meters going in today. that's what's expected to happen all over the national mall area. right
