incident. banana hanging from strings in the shape of nooses in at least three areas, that has shaken the students' level of comfort. >> there were a lot of calls being made as well to administration from people's parents asking what's going on. what steps are they taking to fix this. >> reporter: now the university president condemned the incident in a statement saying while this incident targeted au's aka chapter after the first black woman was sworn into this position, it adversely affects the entire university community. there were two separate incidents last year targeting african-american women using banana sz. that resulted in one student expulsi expulsion. there were meetings, topics about race and moving this forward. obviously this has to be addressed once again. that is the latest live from outside of american

back to you. >> 6:05. terror at the university of texas at austin after a student goes on a stabbing rampage. this morning students are trying to figure out what set off that person. campus police say white was armed with a large hunting knife and targeted people at a popular spot on campus. 25 people could be charged with protests in may day out west in oregon. take a look at this video. police in portland say protesters threw rocks and bottles and set that big fire as well. they said the protest actually turned into a riot. this is one of the may day demonstrations that took place all over the country including here in d.c. other than this, those marches were peaceful. breaking news now. writers in hollywood were all set to strike and their contract expired a couple of hours ago. >> good news for movie lovers with

lawmakers want to improve customer service. that's coming up at 6:30. peter newsham has been d.c.'s acting police chief. they could make it official. they're set to vote for a full vote today on newsham's top position. he plans to reduce the number of commanding officers. you can get your tickets for this week end because the caps are coming back home to d.c. >> they have one more gaming against the penguins in pittsburgh but they will be at the verizon center this weekend. we're showed the dramatic ending in overtime. >> reporter: he wasn't happy with his playoff play, but kevin shattenkirk's happy with the results on monday night. his overtime goal delivered the caps

good morning, everybody. it is coming up on 6:13 on a tuesday morning. if you're planning to be outside the next few days, today warm and breezy. pleb plenty of sunshine today. chances for rain start sneaking back into the forecast late in the day and on thursday we can get heavy rain on friday particularly in the morning hours. sheena is back in a few more minutes to let you know if the rain drops are going to drag back into your weekend. >> taking a look at chopper 4 over the beltway at 66. volume looks very typical. red line metro back to normal service. we'll look at travel time coming up. >> melissa, thank you. keep your eyes on the screen right now. terrifying security video caught the moment a little boy fell from a moving school bus. without the driver even noticing. the boy tumbled out of the emery

last month. the emergency alarm didn't go off and the driver had no idea until the other students on the bus started screaming. aside from a few cuts the boy was okay and quickly chased after the bus. the school district said students were accidentally hitting the door and that's what caused it to dislodge. you may remember that bridge collapse in atlanta after a massive fire. some good news today. the bridge is expected to reopen by memorial day. crews are working around the clock to have the i-85 bridge completed ahead of schedule. they initially thought it wouldn't be finished until the middle of june. there is a new effort to make affordable housing more affordable in the district. today mayor muriel bowser is working on having another area for affordable housing.

he was eventually shot and killed at the scene. >> angie, thank you. a 24 hour vigil in honor of local fallen officers is set to get underway this morning. it begins at 10:00 a.m. at the montgomery county public safety memorial ahead of a service to honor those officers. it honors the members including police, fire, sheriff's office and the department of corrections and rehabilitation. >> today the loudoun county commonwealth attorney will give new information in the stabbing death. in 2010 leesburg police said they were investigating whether a former neighbor was responsible. now officials believe that neighbor was responsible for multiple stabbing attacks in virginia. they also believe the victims were targeted because of their

race. he's currently serving a life sentence for stabbing five people to death in michigan. 6:35. three teenagers are facing charges accused of vandalizing 35 cars. they smashed in the windshields of cars parked at a couple of apartment complexes in gaithersburg. they kicked in the windshields monday morning along christopher avenue. it doesn't look like they tried to steal anything. the video of a united airlines passenger angered people. >> that has sparked a congressional hearing about airline customer service. news 4's justin finch is live at dulles airport with passenger reaction. justin beings good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. this morning passengers are telling us they're hoping this will lead to positive

joins other airline officials to testify before a congressional oversight panel. they're telling us the airline is taking actions they find reassuring from offering up to 10 grand compensation to those who give up full flights to giving workers more tools to solve issues in the field. those are among ten changes united rolled out last week after this video of chicago police pulling dr. david dao from a full united flight after he refused to give up his seat went viral. dao and the airline have since settled. that video did give them pause. after that vidindividuavideo su think they did what they could have done. hopefully nothing like that will ever happen again. that was completely unacceptable. hopefully moving forward they can be consistent with the customer

emerging here. first, some good news. the 4-month-old boy who was trapped inside the submerged car, he has been discharged. the 18-month-old girl, little addie, who was also trapped and pulled, she remains in intensive care in stable condition. she is now breathing on her own. her family also talking to us and telling us how thankful they are for that band of good samaritans, a half dozen people, total strangers, they ran to this car that was submerged in the side of the road just outside dallas when this round of severe storms roared through on saturday evening. the family had actually packed into their car trying to escape one storm when they ran into another. we spoke with the good samaritans as well. some of them, they said they did what they needed to do and they were so grateful that the family is okay. as for that incredible video that everybody has

immediate reruns. last night jimmie kimmel took off his comedian hat and shared something very personal with his entire country of viewers. >> he and his wife welcomed a baby boy two weeks ago. their joy was interrupted by the reality that their son needed immediate open heart surgery. >> a sonogram of the heart and found that billy was born with a heart disease. they went in there with a scalpel and did some kind of magic that i couldn't even begin to play. they opened a valve and the operation was a success. this is what he looked like on monday. but this is what he looked like yesterday. >> count your blessings. you can't beat that. kimmel says his son will need several surgeries over the course of his life but for now he is doing much better. >> oh, my goodness. >> awesome. >> a
