thank you for joining us. time to kick things off. it looks like it's going to be a nice weather. >> yes, indeed. breezier than it's been in the past few days. sheena parveen is here to tell us what is happening the rest of the day. >> guys, it's going to be breezier today. cold front moved through. temperatures this afternoon a little cooler. 74 in the district. west winds sustained at 17 miles an hour. so breezy and windy at times this afternoon. winds gusting close to 30, 35 miles an hour. we're nice and dry. some of those clouds have been struggling to get out. most of the clouds are north of the district but as we go through the afternoon, it's really going to be a nice day. if you're dining out, good time to do so. nice and dry around happy hour. 77 degrees and still looking breezy. by dinnertime, nice and dry and cooler. i'll show you the forecast and also a much bigger rain chance coming up. >> an

officer shot on camera shooting an unarmed black man will plead guilty. michael flager shot and killed scott. the associated press released the details of the plea agreement. in that agreement, state prosecutors agreed to drop the pending murder charge against the former officer. his first trial ended in a hung injury. he faces a possible life sentence when going before the judge in a few weeks. the community is outraged and hurt. students and staff were hurt by an apparent racist message. in less than an hour, there is a meeting scheduled to talk about that. molette green is joining us on the campus. good morning, molette. >> reporter: good morning. a lot is expected to happen in an hour at the community meeting

in attendance, the latest target of this incident. she is appealing to the students to ignore hate and unite in a show of solidarity. it's a steady day on campus but many find it hard to concentrate just a day after a racially charged act that's left american university shaken, including these sophomores. >> i would like to see more actions to figure out who is doing this and getting them out of there, whoever is causing this terror on our campus. >> reporter: in the latest incident, bananas were found hanging from strings in the shapes of nooses. and aka-free among the words scribbled on the racially

the alpha sorority. i spoke with the international president dorothy buchanan by telephone. she said, quote, we are stunned. in 2017 to put a noose on a banana and the letters aka, we're clear about what that is. students i spoke with say the university leadership has to do more. >> it keeps happening but i think that we need more solidarity from the school board, the administration. >> reporter: and the community meeting starts at noontime in a show of solidarity and march across the campus. one other note. in my conversation with the international president dorothy buchanan, she told me that she did speak with taylor's parents

and very concerned for their daughter's safety. so they will quickly investigate this and resolve this problem on campus. that is the latest, live from american university, back to you. >> molette green reporting, thank you. this morning out of capitol hill, lawmakers are asking some tough questions about airline customer service. airline executives are in the hot seat giving testimony about how they treated a passenger. oscar munoz spoke before congress. >> i'd like to apologize to dr. dao and every person on that flight 3411 and to all of our customers and employees worldwide. further, i'm personally sorry for the fact that my immediate response and the response of our airline was inadequate to that moment.

mr. dao was. >> airline customers are reacting this morning to some of the changes united and other airlines have vowed to make. news4's justin finch explains. >> reporter: many passengers are hoping that this leads to more positive changes and they are talking about the new rules. united customers telling us that the airline is taking actions that they find reassuring from offering up to $10,000 compensation for those who give up their seats on full flights to give united workers more leeway in solving issues in the field. now, those are among some ten changes that united debuted last week after this video of chicago police pulling dr. david dao from a full united flight after he refused to give up his seat went viral. dao and the airline have since settled and customers say at first sight that video give them

but the timing is not right given the provocative actions by north korea. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> meanwhile, north korea is accusing the united states of pushing the korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war. the accusation was made on north korean tv. the two bombers were deployed amid rising tensions over north korea's pursuit of its nuclear and missile programs. local leaders are calling for action on the purple line today in silver spring. they are demanding two things. a legal decision and federal funding for the project. the light rail line would run from new carollton to bethesda. >> reporter: the crowd is thick here in silver spring. remember,

system that would run between bethesda and new carrollton. workers not only want the jobs but the benefits that would come from building the purple line and all of this is being held up by a judge's ruling which basically says that metro's woes could have an impact on the purple line. >> adam tuss reporting. peter newsom has been the acting police chief. they are set for a full vote today on newsham's confirmation to the top job. he plans to reduce the number of commanding officers and move more officers towards higher crime areas. u.s. marshals have taken over the search for an inmate that's escaped in howard county. they've increased the reward to $10,000. he's

days while being taken to the hospital center for a psychiatric evaluation. watson has ties to maryland's eastern shore and delaware. he's currently serving a 106-year sentence for shooting at police officer's homes. we're hearing from the family of a murdered delaware state trooper originally from prince george's county. >> this is where we met. many this is where we were engaged at the beach. this is where we spent a lot of time together. >> trooper steven ballard was shot and killed during a traffic shop last week. prince george's county tracee wilkins also spoke with ballard's father. he wishes more had been done to prevent the tragedy. >> between a week ago to a month ago, somebody should have seen a sign somewhere. >> the

trooper ballard barricaded themselves in a home for nearly a full day while shooting at police. he was eventually shot and killed himself. in an hour, hundreds of first responders will kick off national police week. right now the streets surrounding the area are closed this is the 23rd year and this will line up for a solemn procession into this church. they will pass under a huge american flag hanging from two fire trucks. the mass begins at 12:10. >> and it seems like it's hard to get your little ones moving and you're probably not alone. >> it generally is tough to get them up and moving. why a little exercise can go a long

. a texas police chief says video shows a car was actually driving away, not toward the officer during a shooting, as the department had previously said. the 15-year-old jordan edwards was killed when police fired at the car saturday night. the police chief says he's troubled by the video but won't

>> the individual didn't actually just attack people that were right there. he walked a little ways and then stabbed another individual and so forth. >> reporter: one classmate of the alleged knife-wielding attacker said he noticed a personality shift after he was arrested for an alleged dwi last month. >> he was missing from class for about a month. he was pretty depressed. >> reporter: harrison brown's former school district remembering him this morning as an inspiration to everyone around him. all right. if you've ever wondered how many calories are in that dinner when you went out last night, you're going to have to wait a little longer. this week, restaurant chains, grocery stores and other places that sell food were supposed to start listing it on the menu but the fda says they have at least until may of 2018. they said it was too much of a burden and hard to follow so we're going to have to wait. changes are coming to your

kids' school lunch. nbc's tom costello explains why the trump administration is rolling back on a healthy food initiative. >> reporter: today's announcement takes aim at one of michelle obama's signature efforts to fight obesity. in 2012, the government required healthy changes to school meals, more fruits and vegetables, slowly phasing in more sodium levels and requiring half of all breads and pastas to be whole grain. eventually all would be whole grain. but many school districts reported that the healthy foods cost more and kids often threw it all away. today at a school in virginia, president trump's new agricultural secretary announced he's loosening the rules. >> meals can't be nutritious if they are not consumed and put in the trash. >> reporter: the government will not cut sodium levels any further and keep the current whole grain requirements and not demand that all pastas

schools will offer 1% chocolate milk. >> the winners will be the makers of processed foods and processed food products. >> reporter: and the long angeles school district where they make 700,000 meals a day, nutrition specialists say they've found ways to make food taste better and prevent waste. >> kids are always going to be fickle with what they eat and some days they will like it better than others. >> reporter: the new rules take effect in the fall. the trump administration allowing local schools to make the decision about what they feed their kids. tom costello, washington. getting kids to exercise more could save the health care system billions of dollars. only 32% of american kids exercise 30 minutes three times a week. but a small increase could reduce childhood obesity on more than 4% and avoid $22 billion

new data reveals facebook knows when your teenager is feeling insecure and facebook is capitalizing on that. facebook has analyzed the status updates and photos of young people for about a year now. it focus ed on teens in australa and new zealand. the social media site says facebook gave that information to advertisers. facebook called the move a mistake and says its advertisers are not allowed to target users based on their emotional state. all right. well, it was a nail biter but the home team pulled off a win. >> they sure did. we're looking at what the caps have to do to secure the next win in tir quest for the cup.he

the family was trapped in rushing water in their car. nbc's gabe gutierrez shows us the moment a group of good samaritans stepped in to help and the family's message of gratitude. >> need some help? >> reporter: this morning, phillip and emily are thankful that they and their two children survived this harrowing nightmare when their pickup truck flipped over in the water. >> when you can't find your kids, you panic. >> reporter: grateful almost yo beyond words that good samaritans rushed to the rescue. their babies, 4-month-old marshall unconscious when pulled from the truck and addy still trapped into her car seat. tom mitchell gave cpr to the baby. virginia howard first on the scene provided the

hilarious. it's got so many colors and facets and cast members have really collected that and put together incredible essays to hear and experience. >> tell me about the story you're sharing for the experience? >> i'm writing about domestic violence. one of the charity work here in d.c. is the oldest charity that supports domestic abuse. >> my sister's place. >> right. here in d.c. they support women who have been abused and it's the oldest one here in the d.c. area and it's really close to my heart. i think about my friends and students. i know so many that have been abused so it's about the abuse in my own family. >> and that must be powerful for you. how do you, stephanie, work with cast members to make sure that the important stories come to life on stage. >> one of the things we do in auditions is we look at the

they've written and how they present it and then we get together and have a big cast read-through, which is like a big party and everybody reads each other's stories so we can laugh and experience them and it's a team building exercise. so everybody rehearses with me and i work with them how to lift the story up off the page and out toed it audience because connecting with the audience is what it's really about. gina is telling her story but also to somebody in the audience that is going to feel that and have experienced something similar. >> gina, what do you want your audience to take away from your story in this performance? >> i think what's important to me -- i'm an english teacher by trade -- is that you have to tell your story. there is tremendous power in letting people know your particular experience. most importantly, that experience is something that people can connect t

it's your story and somebody else's story and there's a beauty in that because as difficult as it might be to share your own story and talk about your pain and lay it out on the table, because being a mom is painful and hard as well as being beautiful but knowing that, you know, somebody else was doing that same thing, feeling that same pain, feeling that same beauty and that allows you to not feel so disconnected and isolated which mothering can sometimes be. it's a hard job. sometimes you're going at it alone and you don't understand if anybody feels that way but this particular project is the beauty of it, we tell these stories but stephanie's story is my story and somebody else's story that he is fulfilling to me as a mom but also uplifting to me as a woman. >> great unifier indeed. >> absolutely. >> thank you so much for joining us. listen to your mother is playing at the theater in arlington at 2:00 p.m. this sunday on may
