rain. let's take a look at roads. good morning, northbound 29 at dumfries road. that one just came in this morning. georgetown road, left lane gets by that work zone. inner loop, two left lanes get by. westbound pennsylvania between washington lanes blocked there. overall beltway is looking quite good. travel times on time, aaron. breaking news in prince george's county. angie goff is at the live desk. and police are looking for answers early this morning and they want the public's health. this after they arrived here. take a look this video of the crime scene out there in suitland. this is in the 4700 block of silver hill road. police say they arrived shortly after midnight at this gas station. and that is where they found a man in his car. he had been fatally stabbed. the investigation is under way

this and why they did this. we'll keep you posted. eun, back to you. students have made a threat. the police want to assure parents that the threat was not legitimate. the threat was made on social media. investigators found the student responsible and premoved the gun from the home. the sheriff's office said the weapons belong to a relative. despite being in the middle of finals students at american university will hold a rally to condemn this week's hate crime. this was the scene yesterday. hundreds of students marching, demanding the university do more when responding to a racial threat. on monday, bananas tied to black nooses were found hanging in three places. aka were written on it. today's rally will begin at

p.m. on campus. and coming up news4's justin finch will have more. new clues on that monument graffiti case from february. the u.s. park police have released photos of the person they say is related to the case. >> news4's erika gonzalez is live at the lincoln memorial with more on how you can help. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, eun, good morning. it appears we have movement in this case. police are showing a person of interest in the case. they want to know who you know who it is. u.s. park police want to talk to him. it was presidents' day weekend. time has passed, now we're starting to see something in the case. it was presidents' day weekend that not just the lincoln memorial but a number of other monuments here on the national mall were vandalized with permanent markers and very crc

afterwards it took time nor a specific solution to get all of that off of the monuments. now, the u.s. park have released these two eimages. i know they're not so close, they could be better. but they're asking you to look at the images. we've got them on social media to circulate those as well. hopefully, u.s. parks can get answers in the case. let u.s. park police know. live at the lincoln monument. back to you. comic book conventions are popular with young people. but loudoun county investigators think those are the places where a man in nolan has been trying to meet teen girls. detectives have arrested 35-year-old derick la marr jones. detectives say he contacted a teen and gave her transportation to meet him in

since march, they say he has been to at least seven cities around the country and has been posing as someone in his early 20s. they want to know if he pursued any other teens here at home or around the country. developing this morning, we're working to learn whether conditions made this fire in rockville any worse. you can see bad damage to the home. multiple people made it out of the house safely. but it's not clear when they'll be able to go back. montgomery county fire ems didn't say when that fire started. also the roads are back open. this is middle brook road at seneca highway. this is not far from seneca valley high school in germantown. montgomery county fire and rescue say six people were taken to the hospital. four with serious injuries. among them an infants and another child. a woman who

police chief's cruiser will face him in fairfax county court on drunk driving charges. christie edgar is from florida and expected to enter a plea today. she's charged with driving drunk when she rear ended the chief's unmarked police car. the chief suffered minor injuries and told us at the time he was, quote, mad as heck. peter newham is the new police chief. he is going to focus on accountabilit accountability. newsham has been serving as acting police chief. you have a chance to get tickets for the national museum of african-american history and culture. they go on sale at 9:00 this morning. one of the new

all eyes are on a levee that is holding back disaster right now. take a look. outside of st. louis, rivers are swelling. and volunteers are trying to prevent more flooding in an already hard-hit area. look at that. one high school is only accessible by boat yesterday. classes were cancelled. and people evacuated from that area. there's more rain in the forecast this morning. as much as five inches has fallen. no rain in the forecast today. >> and sheena parveen with more on what we can expect. high, sheena. >>

news4's justin finch is at american university for more on the investigation. justin, good morning. >> reporter: campus police put out new surveillance video and they're hoping people are able to identify who that person is. take a look. the video here is dark and blurry. it shows a person to be believed to be wearing dark clothing and a mask or a hat. they're seen to be walking from the quads from the bus stop. campus police do believe someone hung bananas between 3:00 and 5:00 on the campus. those bananas have a reference to aka, alpha kappa alpha, who the first black woman elected to that office. we believe the person doing that was getting into a

sedan off of rockway parkway. >> justin finch live at american university. thank you. it is 5:15 right now. seven roommates in one house can be pretty hard. but in ft. washington, maryland it turned out to be downright dangerous. a heated argument started a fire literally on cable road. one of the roommates adrianna bullock was allegedly messy. her roommates were talking about it and bullock was secretly listening. and prosecutors said she said, quote, y'all want to keep talking about me, i'll fix y'all. then she lit the house on fire. neighbors were pretty shocked. >> i can't believe somebody would burn down a house that they're mad about something. especially a house they don't even own. >> after the bedroom was set on fire, court documents say she walked out the door

fluid. a roommate alerted the others and they ran out safely. she faces arson and other charges. you can find a gluten-free menu in a lot of restaurants these days. researchers are saying the diet is not right for everybody. a new study found that people without celiac disease should not avoid gluten. they studied 100,000 adults and found it did not lower their risk for heart disease. in fact, it just reduced the amount of whole grains they got which are actually good for the heart. >> if you saw my video that i posted on facebook, i thought gluten-free bread has less sugar -- it has more sugar. >> all this week, news4 news trying to go sugar-free or sugar-light. >> a lot less. we're finding out how giving up sugar can impact your b

long-term basis. >> that's especially true when it comes to the brain. >> reporter: studies have shown that sugar can release dopamine, that affected the reward center in our brain that's also what can make sugar so addictive. but did you know that sugar can also have long-term and significant effect it's on our brains as well. >> people that have higher levels intake, self-reported intake of artificially intake of sugar. >> reporter: that study made news last month. but the link between sugar and dementia and alzheimer's disease has been around for a while. heather snyder is director of the alzheimer's association. >> it's a different animal model that suggests there may be a linkage between sugar intake and some of the underlying biology that we know is involved in vascular and alzheimer's

science is offering research for that, a new study claims that mom's brains shrink during pregnancy. this is not a bad thing and may make your brain more efficient. pregnant women lose gray matter in parts of the brain that deal with feelings and nonverbal signals. that means that moms are better able to interpret their baby's emotions. >> i can't remember -- i think maybe -- i can't remember -- >> are you feeling any of that? >> i cannot remember -- i will look at something like -- like a coffee mug. and i'll say -- that's a -- >> wow. >> it's a real -- it's real. it's scientific. >> i've lost a lot of gray matter, too. but i'm pretty sure it wasn't because of pregnancy. >> that's a different issue altogether, chuck. >> exactly. >> at the bottom of that flask. >>

that's what i'm claiming. it is a dry start to the day today. we've been talking all morning about the very unsettled and cool weather pattern that's coming our way that arrived here over the weekend. so if you weren't here last year in the month of may, you didn't miss much in the way of good weather. last year, in may, we had 15 consecutive days with measured rainfall. that's an all-time record with consecutive rain here. rainfall more than an inch and a half above average. the only other month cooler than average was january because of the big blizzard. right now, 63, northwest winds at 9 miles an hour and winds will prohibit much of a warmup. up like idea where we made it to 80s. 50s and 60s. mostly upper 60s by later this afternoon. plenty of sunshine, that won't

there is a reward for the case. 5:33, a story out of chicago two police officers were shot. >> angie goff has information from the live desk. >> we know a manhunt is under way for a person they believe who targeted and shot two officers. a heavy police response, you can see here, to the scene afterwards. investigators say that they were doing a follow-up investigation. and someone pulled up and shot them with a high-powered weapon. those officers right now in the hospital. they both are expected to recover. eun. louisiana's attorney general will now decide whether to pursue charges against the police officer who shot and killed alton sterling. the justice department announced yesterday they will not charge the officers. sterling was a man selling cds outside of a store in baton rouge last summer. police say he fit the description of someone who had threatened another with a gun. officers tackled him and video showed them shootg

sources tell nbc bringing civil rights charges in a case like this one is difficult and requires proving intentional wrongdoing. it is national police week. right now, a 24-hour vigil is under way to honor fallen officers. public service employees are taking turns standing watch over a police memorial in montgomery county. they've been there until 10:00, leading up to a fallen heroes memorial service. it will be held at the county headquarters on edison drive in gaithersburg. >> yelled, the annual blue mass paid tribute to 144 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year, including 12 from our area. it's been held for the last 23 years in st. patrick's church in downtown d.c. for a complete list of events near you go to the nba washington app andrc

country may not be receiving the burial they deserved. a funeral home has been battling the veterans affairs. jodie fleischer uncovered the holdup. >> reporter: if you die without next of kin and someone to pay for the burial, the department of veterans a fairs are expected to help. they can asked to help bury victims who died that were unclaimed. since then, they bought caskets and afternooned for the burials of eight veterans, and they continued to do so even after the va failed to pay the bills. >> i would do it knowing i wasn't getting paid for it. by will bury a soldier. don't tell me we're in a business deal and then you don't hold up your end of the deal. that's different. >> reporter: after weeks of calling multiple departments, the i-team finally got an

lincoln memorial, i'm erika gonzalez, back to you. it's 5:48. the house is expected to vote on a bipartisan spending plan. it would avoid a government shutdown and fund the government through september. the trillion dollar deal includes big funding for the area. in maryland it sets aside $34 billion for the national institute of health. national science programmed receives $2 billion. and $22 million to preschool development. in virginia, $150 million to the metro. $3 billion and visa for seasonal workers. the budget plan fully funds the epa program to clean up the chesapeake bay. president trump voiced his frustration on twitter. president trump alsok
