on. >> we've got a lot going on and at 6:00 starting off a little bit soggy out there. >> you know, i think it's air to say, tom, it's a good day for a big hat. >> and a big umbrella, too, as we will likely get light rain developing later this morning. right now we've dried out from yesterday's heavy downpours starting off this saturday morning with a partly cloudy sky. a live view from the storm team 4 tower camera looking off to the east. we have our sunrise in a couple minutes, getting a few clouds developing and they will fill the sky up a little later. rain showers out of the mountains, there is one area thunder and lightning in the panhandle of west virginia that maybe between frederick and hagerstown another half hour or so. this area in green rivers and streams out of their banks, coastal flood warnings near the bay and tidal potomac. reagan national 57 degrees. maybe a little light rain developing by late morning and during the afternoon

will be hovering, upper 50s, near 60 degrees. chances for rain over the next ten days in a few minutes. right now the new york city area is preparing for another batch of rain this afternoon. check out what it did yesterday. this is unbelievable. this is through new york and new jersey. video inside grand central station, water just pouring in from the ceiling just flooding the interior there. the flooding also submerged some cars and temporarily closed off roads. the west side highway had to shut down for a short time because of all the rising water. flash flooding will be suspended transit service and delayed flights for nearly six hours. the first african-american woman to be president of student government at american university is now under police protection. au says a white supremacist posted threats against taylor du dumpson online. this is the same week as when

trees. students say au administration isn't doing enough to protect students of color staged a sit in on friday and they got their face to face with the pro voss. >> i think that we were really excited because it was the first time we collectively as a community got to engage with him. so i think that we are excited in the sense of, wow, we're actually finally getting a seat at the table. >> au says it's opening a center for anti-racism in the fall. there is a reward being offered concerning who hung those nooses on campus. charges have been dropped in an alleged rockville rape case that received international attention. a 14-year-old girl accused the boys of attacking her inside a rockville high school bathroom last month. prosecutors say that the evidence did not support the rape charges against the two students who are both immigrants. both are being charged with possession and distribution of pornography. one of the boy's attorneys says that these charges aren't fair because the girl st

explicit videos and photos of herself to them. >> if they're going to charge which they have our client then they should also charge her because she was the maker of this and the distributor. >> we know at this point the boys will not return to the school. federal deportation proceedings against them have already begun. a former marine now going to face a judge next week. this time on federal jun charges. clark calloway was indicted for dying an ak-47 from an fbi informant. according to court documents calloway also threatened to attack the first district police station in d.c. and the fbi says he made a risist facebook post supporting isis and wanted to start a race war. as a marine calloway received weapons and explosives training. the fbi disabled the gun before calloway picked it up. this morning corrections officers who lost their lives in the line of duty will be honored here in d.c. wr

national law enforcement officers memorial will start at 10:00 this morning. the ceremony recognizes corrections officers from across the country. following the ceremony a competition will take place. the cold water of washington reality was thrown over the house republicans healthcare bill celebration this week. it was done by senate republicans who are wasting no time showing they have little use for the new healthcare bill. as nbc's peter alexander reports key republicans are not only saying slow down, but are also planning to go back to square one. >> reporter: it's the republican healthcare plan going under the knife. >> you will have better healthcare at a lower cost and now i'm calling on the senate to take action. >> reporter: but the house health bill faces an even tougher slog in the senate where republicans can only afford to lose two votes. >> the senate will write its own bill. my goals will be to rescue the people who are

upcoming shows have been canceled for now after she suffered a stroke on thursday. doctors are watching the 85-year-old country music legend at a national hospital. however, a statement on her website says she should make a full recovery so that's some promising news. in november lynn performed to a sold out crowd here in the d.c. area at the lincoln theater. she even has a new album set to be released in august. this may sound like a bit of election déjà vu. france election officials claiming to hold a meeting today to discuss a hacking attack on manuel macron. he is seen as the favorite goings into tomorrow's runoff

good morning. 6:15 on this saturday morning. got a little bit of light rain out in the mountains and there is one rain shower in the panhandle of west virginia it will be getting close to hagerstown, near frederick, north of there over the next half hour or so. if you plan on getting some exercise you may be dodging still some puddles from yesterday's rain and maybe a little light rain from midmorning all the way into midafternoon, otherwise a lot of clouds around, a bit of a blustery wind as well, we will be hovering in the upper 50s, maybe briefly low 60s by the late afternoon. we dry out tonight. i have the hour by hour timing on the rain today and over the next ten days in just a few minutes. weather is going to be a big factor at churchill downs today. the kentucky derby known as the most exciting two minutes in sports and horse racing's

the top prizes today but as jay gray reports the horse is not the only spectacle of the derby. >> reporter: after a soggy start to derby weekend jockeys are counting on a break in the clouds before the run for the roses. >> this is a very highly sand-based racetrack so it can flood by noon and be fabulous by 6:00 when we race the kentucky derby. >> reporter: of course it's not just the horses that are a part of the derby hype. >> the horse racing part is just secondary. it's a place to see and be seen and you see celebrities, you just soak up the whole environment here at churchill downs. >> reporter: an environment that is bright, bold and big. especially when it comes to the hats. >> you need something that's larger than life. whether it's like the size of it or, you know -- or like the color of it. you need something that's going to pop above like your normal every day. >> reporter: normal and every day aren't words that come to mind when you talk about the

morning, we will be in the 40s in the suburbs and rural areas and near 50 right in washington by dawn tomorrow. then during the day on sunday another breezy day, increasingly clouds, maybe a few sprinkles of light rain in the afternoon. highs mid 60s. cold mornings on monday and tuesday, it will only be near 40 degrees monday and tuesday morning, but afternoon highs into the 60s. we stay chilly in the mornings and cooling in the afternoons toward the end of the week on thursday and friday, maybe some rain moving in. dry next weekend with highs around 70. that's the way it looks. a lifetime of knowledge and a valuable lesson. we will show you the unique opportunity for students that's quickly growing in a major district.

miles an hour throughout the day today. a look at rain chances tomorrow and over the next ten days in a few minutes. clean up after the storm, businesses in virginia beach doing just this. trying to clean up all that damage following yesterday's strong storm that passed through. it brought heavy rain and wind to some beach front hotels and restaurants. it was so strong at times that it ripped siding off one building and tore down an awning on another. at the height of the storm thousands were also left in the dark without power. this is a heartbreaking story coming outs of the district and it has the police now involved following a baby girl's death. police have arrested and charged initial jabore and jay crowder with murder. investigators say their seven week old baby trinity died of malnutrition and trauma. this happened on christmas day. court documents show that the parents lived on public assistance but did not have any formula for the baby and police say the girl had result i'm rib

neighbors are heartbroken. >> i can go without eating but not my child. i mean, you just -- that's your first priority. they are going to eat. >> trinity's father told police he tried to be a good parent and her mom said she knew what her daughter wasn't getting enough food but claimed that crowder controlled the money and wouldn't buy the formula. both are being held without bond. >> so sad. a texas police officer is now charged with murder. roy oliver turned himself in yesterday after he shot and killed an unarmed black teenager last week. oliver shot into a car that was driving away from a party. a bullet hit 15-year-old jordan edwards who was riding in that car. the dallas county sheriff's office said the evidence suggested oliver intended to cause serious bodily injury and commit an act clearly dangerous to human life. a deadly hazing incident has a slue of fraternity brothers in a lot of trouble. 18 students at penn state university now charged w

connection with a student's death. nbc's stephanie goss k explains what happens next sister timothy piazza was 19 years old, a sophomore at penn state doing what so many college students do, pledging a fraternity in february. >> they made the pledges soon to be brothers run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of alcohol in different phases. >> reporter: with a blood alcohol level of .4 authorities say piazza took a terrible fall that the fraternity brothers witnessed. >> these brothers gathered around timothy where he -- some of them described that he looked dead. some of them googled things like what to do with a head injury. >> reporter: no one called 911 until the next morning. piazza died several days later in the hospital. 18 fraternity brothers from beta theta pi and the fraternity itself are facing multiple

piazza's parents are heartbroken and angry. >> we've said this before, this didn't have to happen. this is the result of entitlement, flagrant disobedience of the law and disregard for mortal values. >> reporter: they have disbanded the chapter and says it does not tolerate hazing or alcohol abuse in any form by its members. penn state has put other fraternities on notice. banning all social activities with alcohol for the rest of the semester and did you get new rules to pretend underaged drinking. in a statement the university president called the charges heart wrenching and incomprehensible. nine fraternity members will be arraigned. all greek life on campus could soon come to an end. almost one in four college students said that they have hesitated to report their nationality or religion because they believe that someone might judge them harshly. that's the result o

ash thousands of feet into the sky. the so-called volcano of fire has forced the evacuation of a nearby village. the last major eruption of this volcano it happened back in february of 2015. a jury has awarded more than $110 million to a virginia woman who says decades of using johnson and johnson's baby powder caused her to get cancer. the woman says she used the company's product containing talcum for more than 40 years. she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. this is the fourth case a consumer has won involving similar claims. the american cancer society says any risk from talcum powder is small. johnson and johnson plans to appeal the case. it is a sensitive subject at schools nationwide. we're going to show you how our area's largest school district is addressing transgender students and the impact the decision could have on other schools. timing is everything if you want to stay out of the rain this

therapy to help wounded warriors heal. nbc's joe fryer explains what operation shark dive is all about. >> reporter: at the zoo and aquarium a thick pane of glass separates the sharks from the humans. well, most of the humans. >> are you anxious at all? >> anxious to get in. yeah. i'm probably not going to want to come back out at all. >> reporter: alexandria mcintyre is jumping into the aquarium shark cage, a different kind of mission for this young soldier. >> what made you decide to join the military? >> i wanted to be part of something that was bigger than me. >> reporter: but after enlisting in the army two years ago mac suffered a hip injury and with the physical pain came emotional pain. >> it hits you hard when they tell you that you're losing your career because it's not just a job, it's your life. >> reporter: step by step she's working to regain her confidence and identity
