director comey's plane landed in washington, from los angeles. this happened just before 1:30 this morning. take a look, we're looking at video after it landed. he was in l.a. to speak at the los angeles operations center and that's where he learned he had been fired. the word of the firing was hitting the network about the same time comey got a phone call or e-mail notifying him that he was indeed let go. three senior fbi and justice department officials say that comey had no warning that this was going to happen. they say that he was shocked by this news. i'm angie goff. back to you. >> senate minority leader chuck schumer calls for an independent council to take over the russian investigation. he suggested that, otherwise,

three shootings, that all happened in a matter of hours yesterday that left six people injured and one dead. it happened near benning road and h street southeast just before 10:00 last night. three men were shot but should survive. d.c. police are searching for an all black vehicle that left three boys injured. this happened in a basketball court on franklin street. that shooting happened around 6:00 last night. and in southwest, police are offering a $25,000 reward in a shooting that left a 25-year-old man dead. he was shot at the corner of martin luther king boulevard. thompson was discovered in the middle of the road there, not far from the d.c. police academy. today, a new name will be added to the police memorial statue in arlington county. the corporal will be first added since

he died of cancer last year. his diagnosis was linked to the attack of 9/11. he served on arlington's police force for 27 years. it's been more than a year since the officer was shot and killed on the job. this morning, we're hearing from one of the police officers on that day. this is a story you'll see only on news4. >> you know, she was part of the police family. you know, it still affects everybody, whether you knew them or not. so, definitely something i think about every day. >> officer jesse hempen is now back at work. you heard him saying he's still thinking about that day he and the officer were all shot responding to a

on october 28th, the fbi informed congress it was reviewing a new batch of e-mails related to the clinton investigation. then on november 6th, just two days before the election, comey announced that the review was over and the department wasn't changing its original conclusion. on march 17th -- rather, march 20th, 2017, comey publicly confirmed the fbi was investigating whether the trump campaign coordinated with russia during the election. and last week, may 3rd, comey passionately defended his decision to reopen the clinton e-mail investigation so close to the election. for more on the comey firing, go to the nbc washington app. you can expect james comey's firing to be a big part of nbc's lester holt interview with president trump. he will sit down with the president, watch it tomorrow after nightly news.

security is looking at expanding the ban of electronic devices on overseas flights. there's a ban on devices larger than a cell phone on that flights. there's no time line on when these bans could be announced. the want charged with one of the most intimate crimes in our area is now accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl. lloyd lee welch will go on trial. he's been indicted on three additional accounts for a 1966 assault in woodbridge. police say welch was visiting the girl's mother at the time of the attack. the now 27-year-old victim could be called to testify. 4:50 now. thieves claiming to be with a charity are swiping laptops from stores.
