what do you need to know before you step outside, light jacket. you do need the sunglasses, though, you don't need the rain boots or the umbrella today. but tomorrow, friday and saturday, i think you will. especially on saturday. you'll want those rain boots. here's a look now, we look all the way across the country over parts of kansas and nebraska. that area of rain eventually by tomorrow morning is going to move across the great lakes dive down towards us. and that's increasing our rain chances over the next few days. we'll talk more about that coming up. let's check the temperatures, lauryn's outside. >> good morning, sheena. it's a little chilly outside here. not as cool as yesterday. that's the way it's going to be as we continue into the afternoon and even this evening. a little bit more cloud cover than we saw yesterday. yesterday was absolutely gorgeous. 50 degrees right now here in d.c.

developing story, fbi director james comey fired by tread trump. >> news4's angie goff at the live desk since what happened since we went to bed. >> we know that former director james comey is back here in d.c. right now. take a look at his plane landed in los angeles just before 1:30 this morning. comey was there to speak to the fbi agents at its l.a. operations center. this is an area that is full of networks. and nbc news learned that the word of those firing hit the networks at about the very same time that comey got phone calls and e-mail notifying they'll he was no longer wanted for the job. fbi officials said that comey had no warning this was going to happen and that he was shocked when he learned the news. aaron. >> reaction is pouring in. senate minority leader

schumer calls for an independent council to take over the russia investigation. he suspects everyone will suspect a cover-up. >> and president trump said he had lost confidence in comey. senator mark warn here was leading the investigation into the interference into the election called comey's firing shocking. with comey out, nbc news learned andrew mccabe is now the acting fbi director. mccabe was the assistant agent in charge of the field office. he was part of the investigation into associates of former d.c. mayor gray. he was criticized for his investigation of terry mcauliffe. governor mcauliffe's committee made a sizable donation to the campaign. there's a lot to cover in the developing story. coming up, we'll go live to capitol hill where news4's

on the timing of comey's firing. and in the district now, police are investigating three shootings. they all happened within a matter of hours yesterday and left six people injured and one person dead. this is a look at the scene of one of those shootings. it happened in benning road and h street. three men were shot but should survive. d.c. police also searching for an all-black vehicle in a shooting that left three boys injured. this happened in a basketball court on franklin road northeast. that shooting happened around 6:00 last night. and southwest, police are offering a reward in a shooting that left a man dead. thompson was shot on the corner of martin luther king boulevard about 2:00 in the afternoon. thompson was discovered in the middle of the road there, not far from the metropolitan police academy. >> today, a new name will be added to the police memorial statue in arlington county.

added since the statue was dedicated in 2005. he died from cancer last year. his diagnosis was tied to the work at the pentagon in after 9/11. he served on arlington's police force for 27 years. it's been more than a year since officer ashley winden was shot and killed her first day on the job. this morning, we're hearing from one of the police officers with her that day but survived. a story you'll only see on news4. >> you know, she was part of the police family, it still affects everybody, whether you knew them or not that is a police officer. so, definitely something i think about every day. >> officer jesse hempen is now back at work. but you heard him say he still thinks about that

he,winden, and officer officer dave mccallen were shot that day. after that happened he said he still loves being a police officer. >> it's my career. i've wanted to do this for a long time. i like this job, i wasn't letting something like this stop me from doing it. >> the law enforcement -- capital area law enforcement foundation is holding a golf tournament next week to honor officer guindon. thieves wanted money, you are not going to believe how they planned to get it. >> erika gonzalez is live with details. >> reporter: aaron, eun, good morning to you. we're just learning from the store employee, he says whomever did this knew exactly what they were doing and what they were coming for. let me give you an idea as to where we're at. we're at a bp

corner of 41st and alabama avenue in southeast. back here out on the scene. take a look at this atm. absolutely gutted. we just talked to the store employee who says that he was here. and that all of a sudden he heard the noise outside his store. and that he could see two masked men wrapping chains around the atm. and a third person inside a dark colored pickup truck. he said he turned and didn't say anything to it. >> he was trying to come out and hook up the atm. and then pulled it. and broke it. they took the money -- they didn't come inside, they don't harm me. >> reporter: so, thankfully, we can tell you the store employee is okay. as he said, they didn't try to

i'm angie goff at the live desk with new video out of british columbia after a search for two men believed to have been swept away in a mudslide. responders say it's now recovery efforts. no sign of them. the mudslide affected about 100 homes. we're hearing it's blocking

roads anywhere from one to eight feet deep. the massive mudslides were triggered by snow melt and torrential downpours that happened on friday. people living in charlton county, georgia, are forced to leave their homes this morning because of a massive wildfire. take a look at all of that smoke and flames. dark clouds, smoke and soot are also hanging in the air this morning. the westmin fire, grew by 2,000 acres into tuesday, as the wind shifted. 15 minutes after the hour. around here we're still looking at a chilly start to the day. >> that's what i'm calling it right? i want a warmup again. >> i know, they were just asking me on wtop when we can stop wearing jackets.chilly out ther. we've g

the ex-nfl star died before his appeal could be heard. she said it had to deal with a longstanding case law in that state. he killed himself a prison cell last month. he was serving a life sentence. former redskins running back clinton portis is a wanted man this morning. montgomery county police issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court or pay a fine for a traffic violation. police in bethesda cited him for driving with a suspended license. all right. here we go. tonight is game seven in the caps' quest for the stanley cup. bring it to d.c. the caps will take on the pittsburgh penguins at the verizon center. and many goals shall be

it dates back to the handling of the clinton e-mail investigation. we want to walk you through it. july 5th, 2016, director comey held a news conference recommend nothing criminal charges against hillary clinton in the investigation. fast forward to october 28th. the fbi informs congress it's revealing a new batchch of e-mails. and a few days before the election, comey announces that review is over and the department will not change its original conclusion. to spring, march 20th of this year, comey confirms, the fbi is investigating whether the trump campaign coordinated with russia during the election. just last week, may 3rd, comey passionate defended the decision to reopen the clinton investigation so close to the election. we're working the story from several angles. coming up, news4's

is going to have details coming up next. aaron. >> angie, thank you. the man charged with one of the most infamous crimes in our area is now accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old in prince williams county. lloyd lee welch will go on trial in september for the killing of two. now we've learned he's been charged with two additional assaults in woodbridge. if the judge allows it, the now 27-year-old victim could be called to testify in the murder. thieves claiming to be with a charity are swiping laptops in stores. it happened here in bethesda on march 28th. montgomery county police just released these surveillance photos after four laptops were stolen at the apple store. one man distracts an employee while asking to make a purchase for a charity. while

laptop. looking into the possibility of these same men did similar things. a teacher was accused of sexually abusing a former student. it happened at another school 20 years ago. according to "the washington post," the administrator who hired michael henderson knew in some part about the allegation but hired him anyway. the school quickly removed the veteran music teacher after receiving a call about the alleged abuse. then center a letter home to parents apologizing for their, quote, grave lack of justice. and those students who attended that school included sasha and malia obama. if you're worried about the presence of a cell phone tower in prince george's county, you don't have to worry anymore. on twitter last night, according to the school system, milestone

proposal for a cell tower. this comes after the complaint of lax of transparency in the process. being a working mom is extremely challenging but it's even more difficult in some states and others. wallet hub ranked all 50 states and d.c. based on child care, job opportunities and work/life balance. they found vermont is the best place to be a working mom. alabama in last place. here in our region, the district leads at 15th. virginia is ranked 21st. and maryland attacks the 30th spot. so, what are the chances your metro train is going to be on time this morning? not very good. >> a look at which riders have it worse and what metro is doing to make on-time performance better. >> and united airlines under fire. because a

officer ashley guindon was shot and killed her first day on the job. this morning, we're hearing from one of the police officers with letter that day. this is a story you'll eonly on news4. >> you know, she was part of the police family, you know, it still affects everybody, whether you knew them or not. because it's a police officer. definitely something i think about every day. officer jesse hempen is now back at work. as you just heard from him, he's still thinking about that day in february. he and i didn't understanden and dave mccullen were all shot responding to a deadly domestic call. after all that happened, hempen said he still loves being a police officer. >> it's -- i mean, it's my career. i've wanted to do this for a long time. i like this job, i wasn't letting something like this stop me from doing it. >> tap

holding a golf tournament next week to honor officer guindon. new numbers show metro isn't very good at being on time. blue line riders have an on time rate of 45% back in march. not nudge better on the yellow line. 53%. green line has the most trips that ran on time. apparently metro is aiming to have all lines by an on-time rate of at least 75%. changes could be on under way for what you carry on a plane. what you may have to check, depending on your destination. and we're tracking the latest developments in the firing of former fbi director james comey. what trump is going to say that may focus a lot of attention on the white house. and we're tracking the sunshine. that sun coming up in just about 20 minutes. temperatures going to move into the low 70s today. a few more clouds than yesterday, but still a little

>> white house said it's all about the clinton e-mail investigation. that the president on the recommendation of attorney general jeff sessions who said he recused himself from the e-mails and the deputy attorney general who wrote a pretty long letter saying that he thought comey messed up, mishandled that investigation. and failed to acknowledge his mistakes. we heard a lot of his explanation in testimony. now, comey is out. white house saying the president lost confidence in him to lead the investigation, to lead the agency. >> and tracie, are democrats taking any steps after the firing? >> it's interesting, while democrats don't necessarily agree with how the e-mail investigation went down, they are concerned now that the president has fired the person who is investigating the president's campaign and ties to russia. who now leads that investigation. for now, the deputy fbi director andrew mccabe is in charge. democrats say if they don't get a special

independent inside the justice department to oversee this. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill. this programming note, nbc's lester holt will sit down with president trump for an exclusive interview. watch it right after news4 at 6:00. you might have to check your laptop the next time you fly to europe. the department of homeland security is looking at expanding the ban on electronic devices on electronic devices. there's a ban on devices larger than a cell phone. now, it is considering adding european flights to the list. united airlines is once again getting heat after one passenger says she was embarrassed on a flight. >> this is all because a mother said she needed to use the restroom when the fasten seat belt sign was on.

and a nurse. she says she has an overactive bladder and needs to use the restroom more often. and she said she needed to go to the restroom or needed a cup. harper said she was given a cup. >> people, you know, all around, strangers, they need to focus a little more on their paying customers and have more customer service. >> harper has filed a complaint with the department and united said customer safety is the first priority. the situation that happened is upsetting. the company says it has reached out to harper. for the second time this month, d.c. police are investigating at a dk gas station in southeast washington. >> news4's erick ka gonzalez is live with details on what happened. erika. >> reporter:

just a few hours ago, the employee tells us they knew what they were coming for. he said he made contact with one of the guys. two masked mens, he says, wrapped chains around this atm and a third in a pickup truck and just tried to haul it away. the d.c. police here on krenn were telling us they weren't exactly sure whether or not they were able to get away with any cash because they've seen instances where atms may have cash here. but oftentimes, they have it down here. this is still well impact. this didn't go anywhere. a store employee says an incident that happened last week, and now this has left him really rattled. >> don't, they didn't come in, and gone. but last week, they come inside. i'm not sure if this is the type of -- they go in the store and try
