that comey got an e-mail and phone call notifying him that he'd been let go. fbi department officials say that comey had no warning that this was going to happen. and that he was shocked. >> angie, thank you. 6:04. you can expect a lot of activity on capitol hill. >> we already know chuck schumer has instructed all democratic senators to be on the fleur in their seats at 9:30. schumer called for an independent counsel to take over the russia investigation. he suggested otherwise, quote, everyone will suspect a cover-up. >> president trump fired back on fwirt calling him, quote, crying chuck schumer. the president wrote a letter to comey notifying him of his firing saying he's not effectively lead.bureau. >> former director now comey in testimony to say what he knew. and to say it's

vast understatement. >> senator warner is leading the senate investigation into russia's interference in the election. >> now, with comey out, nbc news has learned that andrew mccabe is now the acting fbi director. mccabe was reebtsly t lrecently assistant agent in the d.c. office of the fbi. he was part of the investigation into the investigation of vincent gray. governor mcauliffe's political action committee made a sizable donation to the senate campaign of mccabe's wife. >> the coverage continues on the nbc washington app. there you can find a time line and see how local lawmakers are reacting. >> 6:05 to angie goff. breaking news. >> we were first at the bp gas station at the corner of 41st and alabama in southeast. so, the clerk here at this gas station said he made

with thieves used chains to do the damage there. rip an atm right out, tow is away in a dark colored pickup truck. by the way, this is the second time this has happened at a gas station. police on the scene won't know if the three thieves got away with cash this time. as we take a live look at the situation right now. when the store corner gowner ge they'll have a better picture based on the nature of the machine. by the way, erika gonzalez has been there all morning long. we'll get a first hand account of what happened in her live report coming up in ail half hour, aaron. this morning, d.c. police are investigating three shootings that have left six people injured and one person dead. it all happened within an hour. this is benning road and h street in southeast. the shooting happened before 10:00. three men were

black vehicle in a shooting that left three boys injured. it happened at a basketball court on franklin street and lincoln road southeast. and in southwest, d.c. police are offering a $25,000 reward in a shooting that left a 25-year-old man dead. please say demarcus thompson was shot near the corner of martin luther king boulevard and irvington street around 2:00 in the afternoon. thompson was discovered in the middle of the road from not far from the metropolitan police academy. police morning, police are looking for a former redskins player. there is a warrant out for clinton portis. police show back in january police in bethesda cited him for driving were you a suspendsed license. his license was spuspended in florida. portis was a contributor to redskins show time

fac faced. and sentenced to 360 days in prison that's one day shy of what experts say would have triggered the verdict. we learned that he worked briefly as a conseeier at that building where the doctors were found dead. we now know what's going do happen to the teenager seen in this dramatic video in florida. we're told he turned himself in. he threw a 68-year-old woman to the ground and into the pool. the teenager is charged with battery and will be under house arrest for three weeks. the woman in the video said she's moving on. >> i feel for him. i feel for his mom. she's a mom also. i never would -- i feel for him, you know, there's nothing i can do. he did something wrong. >> the teen is 16 years old and was charged as a juvenile. he was upset. the woman was complaining about notification at that party. the teen will be aed

to school. his attorney said the teen is feeling very remorseful about what happened. well, after that intense scene at the ft. lauderdale airport, three people are facing charges this morning. and the pilots union is being told not to anymore. we showed you this video, tensions turning into an all-out brawl. hundreds of people taking spirit airlines were delayed for hours. then they started fighting with each other and the cops. a judge issued a restraining order against the airline pilot's association. as you may have heard, as you head to work, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for any extra bicyclists this morning. >> those bicyclists might be young kid

big question everybody is talking about today. and the associated press has singled out at this point four names that could permanently replace comey. includes former new york city police commissioner ray kelly. he oversaw the department in the years following the 9/11 attacks. and new jersey governor chris christie. he's known president trump for years and a former united states attorney. and another name to watch out for, milwaukee county sheriff david clarke, they call him a wildcard in this. he's a stronger supporter of the president. finally south carolina congressman trey dowdy. in the meantime, andrew mccabe who was recently the assistant agent in charge of the d.c. field office for the fbi is serving as acting director. i'm angie goff in the newsroom. back to you. right now, d.c. police are back at a gas station in southeast washington for a second time in a week. >> thieves

money, but you're not going to believe how they planned to get it. news4's erika gonzalez is back live to explain it. >> reporter: three masked men, two of them on the scene, another one in a pickup truck. now police are waiting to see if they've got any surveillance video that might help them catch who's behind it. we're showing you the scene at the bp gas tags station at 41 s alabama. the employee who was here at the time didn't want to show him on camera and he said he looked one of them right in the eye and described to us how they caused all of this damage. >> they come in a big truck. and one of them was trying to come out -- come out and hook up the atm with the chains. and then they pulled the truck, and they broke it.

they didn't try to come inside, they didn't hurt me. >> reporter: yeah, fortunately, that man is okay. but if you come step inside here, he was telling us that just about a week ago, somebody else came through here and tried to throw rocks at this glass door, caused a little bit of damage you that can see here. some scuff marks. fortunately, they didn't break this glass and they weren't injured in that incident as well. all of this has happened within two weeks. again, police counting on surveillance video to help them track down who is behind it. live in southeast, i'm erika gonzalez. back to you. montgomery county police need help tracking down thieves, too. they stole laptops from an apple store. it happened in bethesda on march 28th. police just released these surveillance photos of the suspects. take a look. they say one man asked an employee about buying depu gi

for charity. police are looking at the possibility that the same men pulled similar scams in connecticut and new york. a big win for parents and prince george's county. according to the school system, milestone communications withdrew its proposal to build a cell phone tower at emerald roosevelt high school in green belt. it comes after the school complained to compete that it lacked transparency in the process. our county bureau chief tracee wilkins broke the news on twitter last night. the issue of the cell tower isn't limited to there. parents say the cell phone towers foes a health risk to children. when he's not driving ball out of the ballpark, he's asking to you drive safely. >> ryan zimmerman is taking part in a brand-new effort called

investigating the potential russian ties. what's the timing of it? what do you make of it? >> what i make of it, i've seen political daattacks, shocking developments. the closest parallel president richard nixon ended up firing a special prosecutor looking into watergate. there are some similarities some differences with that. yet, to have someone get fired who is leading the investigation into you is a stunning development. you know, james comey had his attracters both democrats and republicans but there was a sense, well when they're leading an investigation into the russian interference in the 2016 campaign. and possible ties to the trump campaign itself, people thought, well, he's going to continue to investigate this. so, it sends a shock to everyone. and now we have to pick up the pieces. >> so, the white house said this is based on recommendations from the attorney general in relation to clinton e-mails. the incident, the way that rolled out.

explanation? >> i really don't buy it. on a long list of grievances coming from the 2016 campaign. one actually from democrats championing back in july in 2016 that comey shouldn't have interfered. what he did was improper. there are a lot of democrats and republicans who agree with that assessment. and in trump's james comey assureded me in private that i'm not being investigated. that to me, signals this is more about russia than what happened to hillary clinton. >> thank you, mark. >> our coverage of comey's firing continues in the nbc washington app. there you'll find the time line to see how local lawmakers are reacting. and a programming note as well, nbc's lester holt will sit down with president trump tomorrow. you can watch that interview thursday night on "nightly news". a new name will be added to the police
