the story is getting a lot of reaction online. there are claims howard failed to help five former students and employees. >> some of the allegations are pretty hard to read. news 4's megan mcgrath is live at hoortd. megan? >> reporter: good morning, eun and aaron. the five women say the universe stid reacted with, quote, deliberate indifference. they say howard university offered them no help after they reported that they had been sexually assaulted. now the lawsuit goes on to say that the university failed to follow its own policy to investigate sex assault claims within 60 days. now two of the women identified in the lawsuit as jane doe 1 and jane doe 2 say they were assaulted in 2015 and 2016 respectiv.

resident advisor ever raping them. that r.a. was not immediately removed from his position. one of the women pleaded about the situation, and in the lawsuit the woman says that the dean of student affairs told her, quote, you embarrassed your family by doing that. the attorney representing all five women says howard university didn't seem concerned about the victims. >> again, they seemed more concerned about the issues on them not of how this interrupted our client's ability to continue their education. >> reporter: and another woman in the lawsuit says that she experienced physical and sexual abuse at the hands of a howard university police officer. i'm going to have more on that part of the story coming up at 6:00. >> megan, thank you. 5:05. in an e-mail a howard

university could not comment on the lawsuit. the statement went on to say the university has been and remains to be committed to diligently investigating any such allegation to ensure a safe and healthy community. >> three weeks, three nooses found on campuses in our area. it happened in anne arundel county. take a close look at these pictures. they were captured at the middle school before a teacher found it hanging from a light in the courtyard yesterday morning. news of the incident happened yesterday. >> some students were texting parents. >> we're hoping our students realize the severity of the incidents and they have an impact on members of our community. >> they believe the noose was placed on a light by the people in that surveillance video who

as you may remember, someone hung bananas from nooses on the campus of american university last week in northwest washington. that incident left them concerned about their safety. they've hired dr. ibrahim bundy. he is an expert on racism. a man accused of a brutal murder on a metro train. jasper spires is charged with stabbing this man more than 30 times. it was a random attack that happened on a red line train. south they are land had just graduated from american university. prince george's county council member heads to court on dui charges. mel franklin crashed into another car on route 4 in marlboro last december. police say he fled the

russian investigation. we hear president trump's contention that comey told him three times that he was not under investigation. >> was it a phone call? did you meet face to face? >> i had a dinner with him. he wanted to stay on. >> he asked to stay on? >> i had dinner with him. i think he asked me for dinner and he wanted to stay on as the fbi head and i said, we'll consider it. we'll see what happens. but we had a very nice dinner and at that time he told me you are not under investigation. >> we will have more take aways from lester holt's interview with the president with news 4's tracie potts in a few minutes. first though, 4 things we're learning about comey's firing. one current and one former fbi official close to the former director tells nbc news he did not seek

he was invited by the white house. in the interview with nbc news the president said he had planned to fire comey all along. that contradicted previous explanations. on capitol hill, andrew mccabe disputed that comey had been inspired because he lost the confidence of the rank and file. the white house has a ban doobed the idea of a president visiting fbi headquarters. we're told he would not be greeted warmly. every person who's trying to move around our area, governor larry hogan is leaning hard on maryland's attorney general to take harsh steps on the purple line. they're looking to compel a ruling in the purple line lawsuit. it's been stalled ever since the judge questioned the viability of the purple line in august. they say $900 million if the purple line

for the second weekend in a row, a wet forecast has stalled work on the bridge. vdot is rescheduling the work for next weekend. it will start friday night at 10:00 and will add congestion between route 1 and minuteville road. crews completed the first phase of the work in april. the bridge carries 71,000 vehicles per day. it is a must-win for the washington wizards tonight. they're back at home at verizon center for game six against the boston celtics. celtics leading the series 3-2. if the wizards win tonight they will force a game seven. that will give them a chance to get to the eastern conference finals against the raibing champs, the cavaliers. >> nice to have one of our teams still winning and bring home a

purchase snacks on a video that we have and there are other videos that we have of him using her credit card. >> sadler could spend the rest of his life in prison when he is sentenced in september. his girlfriend was also charged in this case. today joint services will be held in south boston for dr. richard field and his fiance, dr. lena polonos. both were brutally murdered in their condos just after dr. field texted a friend to send police. officers found the suspect still inside the condo and shot him during the standoff. today a man accused by nine gym ninasts of sexually assault them is in court. he is facing 22 charges from nine victims. today a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence for trial. take a look at these flames in

this fire could be seen for miles overnight. look at that. you'll see the fire consumed most of tho building, even some trailers around it. one worker taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. no word on what caused the fire. the alexandria school superintendant will leave his post to become a professor of education at george mason university. he's been with the school for four years. during his term test scores rose among minority students and he helped the city schools develop a five-year plan. in news 4 your health at 5:17, doctors are worried about the dangers of cutting up avocados. some people don't realize how ripe the avocados are and they end up slicing them with too much force. next time you cut up an avocado, keep your hands on top of it and then twist it apart. >> you know where the

she was with her mother, keir johnson, the woman in the photo. johnson is missing as well and police believe they may have been kidnapped. howard university has been hit with a lawsuit that said it failed students who were sexually assaulted. that suit claims that between 2014 and 2016 five women were assaulted by either students or employees. the women say the school did not support them. in an e-mail they said the university could not comment on the lawsuit. major revelations in an exclusive interview with nbc's lester holt. james comey was fired as fbi director and repeats this claim that comey told him he was not under investigation. news 4's tracie potts will have more on the interview coming up. it is a must win for the washington wizards tonight. back home at the verizon center for game 6. celtics leading the series 3-2. if the wizards win tonight they will force

corporal adrian crudup has been charged with interfering with an investigation that dates back to 2015 joompt the fbi says a teenager accused of murder told her 15-year-old victim i will see you in hell. that chilling testimony came yesterday in a hearing for 17-year-old venus romero horihata. the fbi testified that she was the lead attack er of the 15-year-old stabbing her 13 times. investigators believe revenge was the motive here. she's a suspected member of the gang blamed her of the killing of her boyfriend a week earlier. metro surge number 15 starts on tuesday. this will shut down not one, not two, but five metro stations. they are new carrollton,

exclusive interview with nbc news. >> let's get right to news 4's tracie potts. what are some of the big take aways and how are lawmakers reacting? >> reporter: probably the biggest take away and that is fueling the reaction on capitol hill are contradictions between what the white house staff said immediately after firing, what the vice president said. this came from inside the justice department and the president said firing comey was his idea and something he planned to do. this was something that he had been planning all along. the white house story has been shifting over the last couple of days on how all of this went down. the president also weighed in on the russia investigation saying he directly asked director comey whether or not he was being investigated. >> i know that i'm not under investigation. me, personally. i'm not talking about campaigns, i'm not lk

>> did you ask him to drop the investigation? >> no. never. >> did anyone from the white house? >> no. in fact, i want the investigation speeded up. >> reporter: the president says he wants to get to the bottom of that with a new fbi director and that they're already looking at several people to fill that role. what did the president say about celebrating. >> reporter: seemed to be a self-surprising moment when the president looked around and he saw all of those politicians. here's how he described to lester what he was thinking at that moment about the outcome of the election. >> reporter: do you still have moments where you think, how did i get here? >> i think everybody does. i think when you become president it's very special. when you're in the white house it's very special and i had all of my republican friends who have, frankly, been in politics all of their lives and have done a great job. they're congressmen, we had some senators, et cetera. but i did. i looked around and i said,

sorry, folks, can you believe it's me? >> reporter: so a bit of a raw thought and feeling there from the president as he continues to deal with the fallout of this decision to fire the fbi direct or. we haven't heard the last of that. former director comey may actually be here on capitol him next week. >> tracie, thank you. while we're on the topic, there's a new set of results from the latest nbc news survey monkey. it shows the majority of americans believe the firing of james comey was not appropriate. 54% thought it was appropriate. 24% said the clinton e-mail investigation. the poll was conducted online from may 10th through may 11th. it has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5%. you can see much more on the "today" show this morning.
