avoid the fate of millions of others around the world who are logging on only to find this virus is still spreading. the cyber attack unprecedented. this morning, car maker nissan and tech company hitachi are struggling with sluggish e-mail. a spokeswoman telling nbc news "we're certain we've been hit with a virus." the biggest cyber attack in history started friday, freezing computers in britain's national health service, forcing emergency rooms across the country to close and even stopping surgeries. the malware known as "wanna cry" has been causing chaos across the globe, 200,000 systems in 150 countries. germany's national rail, spain's biggest phone company, the russian interior ministry and fedex in the u.s. >> we've seen the rise of ransomware being the principal cyber crime threat in the last two years. we've never seen anything on this scale. >> the virus first infects the computer through a bad li

through an organization's network, locking computers, enscre encrypting files and demanding 300 dollars in bitcoins. they use cyber security by hackers who stole it from the national security agency. over the weekend, this 22-year-old british cyber researcher known as malware tech says he accidentally found a kill switch for the virus. >> i was surprised it wasn't as sophisticated as i expected. i expected proper professional-grade code. >> reporter: he, along with american derian huss slowed the attack but couldn't stop it. >> reporter: the only way to guard against it, update your computer software and avoid e-mails with strange links. and this morning, chinese officials say they've detected a new version of this virus that spread more quickly they say

they say it isn't affected by that kill switch. experts say they look like it's russian-speaking cyber criminals. investigators say they don't know at this point who's behind it. matt, savannah? >> kelly, thank you very much. nbc news analyst sean henry is a former executive assistant director with the fbi. he is now the chief security officer for the cyber security firm crowdstrike. sean, good to see you, good morning. >> good morning, matt. >> i understand this is complicated because these codes are coming from different sources in different places so what will it take for cyber security experts to track down who's doing this? >> well, tracking don who's doing it is going to be difficult, what you've got is hackers who have accessed these networks, they're using the code and it may be reconstitutes and utilized by different organizations. once the code is out there, hackers can grab it and make changes, it makes it more difficult to detect and they

additional organizations, even some who may be protected, they're using bitcoin which allows them remain anonymous and with people paying the ransoms, it's difficult for law enforcement to track it. >> and my question was just that, what's the advice here. should people pay this ransom to get their documents back? what are they supposed to do? >> ideally you have your system protected, you don't suffer this type of attack. and you don't have to pay, but what we're seeing here throughout asia is attacks against software that has not been updated. they have pirated software or they're using legacy software that is not supported. microsoft has put out a patch. people have to get to that. they have to go to microsoft and download that immediately. >> let's make sure we can say this in the simplest possible terms. three things you would urge device users to do today? >> the simplest thing is to go

patch. even for unsupported software, they're providing this patch so go to microsoft, anybody that's got that operating system. number two, make sure your network or system is backed up. if you are infected and your system is locked up you'll be able to reconstitute your network, recapture your data and start over again new, the third thing is you have to get security software that detects these attacks because the attackers are going to make changes and even if you find a patch they'll exploit new vulnerabilities so you have to ensure you've got security software to allow you to identify these attacks before your system is locked up. >> i'm no expert. don't click on those funky links. sean henry, appreciate it. to the white house and the search for a replacement for ousted fbi director james comey. the controversy over his firing is not quieting down in washington. we have complete coverage. pe

pilots and flight attendants worldwide saying its procedures for gaining access to the cockpit were apparently compromised. nbc's come costello covers aviation, what are you learned? >> so united, like all airlines, safeguards that information about keypad codes and procedures to get on to a cockpit but that information got out over the last few days. the airline is trying to fix the problem but reminding its employees under no circumstances can they share this sensitive information united airlines insists it wasn't a hack but its confidential procedures for gaining access leaked. the airline is moving foost shore up its procedures. that could mean reprogramming the keypads on every cockpit door with new access codes. veteran pilot captain john cox. >> something like this investigation getting in the wrong hands is something they

our thoughts are with him for sure. >> let's get the latest on the death of 19-year-old student in february. we sat down with his parents and brother last night. we're going to hear from them in a moment. but first, how the tragedy unfolded. these pictures show a vibrant life cut tragically short. 19-year-old timothy piazza died in february during an alcohol-fuelled pledge ritual known as the gauntlet. now 18 members of the fraternity beta theta pi are charged in his death. >> they made the pledges run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of alcohol. >> reporter: surveillance video shows pledges shotgunning beers and drinking from vodka bottles. after more than an hour, piazza is seen severely staggering drunkenly toward the basement steps. the brothers hear him fall and carry him back to

one brother testifies he demanded they take piazza to the hospital but he's shoved to a wall and asked to leave. at 11:53 p.m., a group text is sent around. "tim piazza might actually be a problem. going to need help." but nothing happens. piazza stands for a final time, staggering again toward the basement. later in the morning he's found there cold to the touch. finally the brothers call for help, nearly 12 hours after piazza first fell but it was too late. now our emotional conversation with timothy piazza's parents jim and evelyn and his brother mike who will be a senior at penn state next year. we began by talking about the disturbing timeline of the fateful night. >> it was horrific this wasn't boys being boys, matt. this was men who intended to force feed

alcohol into other young men and what happened throughout the night was just careless disregard for human life. they basically treated our son as road kill and a rag doll. >> nobody should consume that much alcohol. that's -- that's torture. >> there are videotapes. that house has an internal video system that was pretty extensive. how much of the video have you seen? >> we haven't seen the video yet, matt and i don't really want to see it. but i will tell you this, if the board trustees and the president sit down to watch the video with me, i'll watch it. >> you don't want to see it alone as a parent. >> no. >> but you would watch it with someone who could make decisions to make a different. >> absolutely, i don't want see it as a parent because i feel like it will be incredibly painful and the last

called the hospital just to see and the woman on the phone told me he was in the emergency room so i went over there immediately and when i got there i found out pretty quickly how serious it wa was. >> were you the one who called your folks? >> i had to call my mom to let her know that he was severely injured and that they were going to fly him to the hershey medical center because it was so severe they couldn't treat him there. >> when was the first time you saw tim? >> he was in surgery and then they -- the doctors came out and they basically sat us down and said he had a non-recoverable brain injury so we knew he wasn't going to make

they let us go in and see him. we talked to him a bit, we held his hand, a tear came to his eye and i said to the doctor "can he hear us?" and the doctor said "maybe. we relieved a lot of pressure, maybe." but frankly i don't know if i want to know if he heard us or not because if he heard us, he knew he was going to die. >> and there was nothing they could do? >> no, the damage was too severe, the bleeding had been too long. >> did you ask the surgeons or the doctors had he been brought to you -- >> yes. >> -- an hour, two hours, four hours, six hours, would the outcome have been different? >> i said those exact words. i said if he was brought here earlier, would the outcome be different and the doctors said yea yeah. >> so those 12 hours that he was left on a couch, on the floor wherever it was in

fraternity house when no one picked up the phone and called 911, that's what made the difference? >> yes. >> yeah, they killed him. >> when the funeral came around did any of those fraternity pledges or fraternity potential brothers come to the tune value in. >> no one from the fraternity or from penn state came to the wake or the funeral. >> no official from penn state university reached out and said i'm going to be there, i want to show up at this young man's wake or funeral? >> no, no. when i met with -- when we met with the president a few days afterwards i brought him a copy of the mass book with tim's picture on it and i slid it across the table and i said "here, since no one had the time to come to the services, i thought you might want to see this." >> what did he say? >> he just kind of took a deep breath and sat back in his chair and nodded. >> no

up to find they're infected. the cyber attack has frozen computer networks in 150 countries including the u.s. affecting hospitals, transport systems, telecom companies and universities. fedex said its computers were affected. it encrypts files then demands money to get access to those files. it's based on a hole in microsoft's security. hackers stole it last summer and released it online. over the weekend, a 22-year-old british cyber researcher found a kill switch and along with an american slowed down the virus. some industry experts say this attack is most likely the work of russian-speaking

happens more often than you think. in fact, new crashes just over this past weekend. according to the store front safety counsel, 60 crashes a day with more than 4,000 people injured and up to 500 killed each year if thfrom this. but this morning, we're getting a look at new technology designed to stop a moving car before it hits you. new york, watch this minivan barrel through the entrance of this convenience store. this man is shopping inside, pinned between the aisles, he escapes, injured but alive. in texas, another out-of-control car plowing through the doors of this convenience store. miraculously, this boy is able to walk away. and in california, this car slams into a grocery store, missing this customer by just inches. it happens all over everyday, cars charging into store fronts.

and half the orchestra is dancing and singing -- these this stuff. it was kind of crazy. >> awesome. >> we're going to check back with jenna across the street. >> who does she have now? >> you guys are going to be so jealous. >> oh, i am jealous. >> this is the "this is us" cast, one of the best shows of the year and you're back for season two. how does it file? >> it feels great to be back for season two for sure. ready to deliver more of these heartbreaking stories and deep emotions and some laughs and get to talk with people for at least another couple years here so we're excited about it. it's good to see these guys, we haven't seen each other in a while. >> reunited and it feels so good. so mandy, this show has people crying, like they can't believe, including me. y'all ever watch it back and just think, how have we struck this chord? >> i think it's a thank you.

to mention it was like the biggest crowd apparently so it was tense and when the rain came and everything -- >> you jumped back into it. do you remember the moves? did you have to practice together again? >> i think it's different for all of us. i know me personally it's probably going to take me two weeks into the tour to really know where i'm supposed to be on the stage. >> i don't mean any disrespect, but as somebody who is older than all of you, as you go into this now, does it take a little more time for limber? the voices are still there but to do the moves? >> the move reduction process, the goal each tour, it's not that it gets harder, we just make the choreography easier. >> we shift our weight. it's about shifting weight. >> reduce the choreography 20% per tour.

this feels. and there was crowds all over here?" and they go "you." and i was like, oh, my god. so the fan base of the uk was a lot of fun to play on and to be in this role. everybody there was like, oh, my gosh. >> and on the other end, you have a great film, family drama set inest l.a. called "low riders." >> it's an amazing film set against the low riding culture, stars damian beshear, oscar nominated damian beshear, theo rossi from "sons of anarchy." it's a great film. we exceeded expectations. we opened in limited release and it's just so good and even if you don't know what a low rider is, this film, you'll enjoy it. >> [ humming "low rider" ] >> we know. >> we can't do any more of that or we'll have to pay for it. >> thank you so much. decline and fall is streaming on

and the children love it. it's funny and ve >> you guys have kids, road trips with zero technology. is that kind of something that you guys have ever tried? >> i'm the worst. i'm like yelling at my kids "you've been on for two hours, get off that thing" and i'm looking at my phone and we're such hypocrites us adults. >> you said -- you have a six-year-old? >> yes. >> and so you're kind of hard core about the no phone thing. >> i'm not as hard core as i'd like to be but i -- yeah, we don't -- he doesn't have a phone, he doesn't have an ipad. for the airplane he uses an ipad, that, i think is crucial. >> it's fall. >> but he also walks up and down the aisles serving everyone on the plane so he has sometimes downs from staring at the thing. >> you have to keep yourself busy if you're stuck like this for six hours. >> yes. >> so filming this movie, some of the scenes are pretty outrageous, there's a muddy scene where you're covered in mud. what was filming that like?
