avoid the fate of millions of others around the world who are logging on only to find this virus is still spreading. the cyber attack unprecedented. this morning, car maker nissan and tech company hitachi are struggling with sluggish e-mail. a spokeswoman telling nbc news "we're certain we've been hit with a virus." the biggest cyber attack in history started friday, freezing computers in britain's national health service, forcing emergency rooms across the country to close and even stopping surgeries. the malware known as "wanna cry" has been causing chaos across the globe, 200,000 systems in 150 countries. germany's national rail, spain's biggest phone company, the russian interior ministry and fedex in the u.s. >> we've seen the rise of ransomware being the principal cyber crime threat in the last two years. we've never seen anything on this scale. >> the virus first infects the computer through a bad li

through an organization's network, locking computers, enscre encrypting files and demanding 300 dollars in bitcoins. they use cyber security by hackers who stole it from the national security agency. over the weekend, this 22-year-old british cyber researcher known as malware tech says he accidentally found a kill switch for the virus. >> i was surprised it wasn't as sophisticated as i expected. i expected proper professional-grade code. >> reporter: he, along with american derian huss slowed the attack but couldn't stop it. >> reporter: the only way to guard against it, update your computer software and avoid e-mails with strange links. and this morning, chinese officials say they've detected a new version of this virus that spread more quickly they say

they say it isn't affected by that kill switch. experts say they look like it's russian-speaking cyber criminals. investigators say they don't know at this point who's behind it. matt, savannah? >> kelly, thank you very much. nbc news analyst sean henry is a former executive assistant director with the fbi. he is now the chief security officer for the cyber security firm crowdstrike. sean, good to see you, good morning. >> good morning, matt. >> i understand this is complicated because these codes are coming from different sources in different places so what will it take for cyber security experts to track down who's doing this? >> well, tracking don who's doing it is going to be difficult, what you've got is hackers who have accessed these networks, they're using the code and it may be reconstitutes and utilized by different organizations. once the code is out there, hackers can grab it and make changes, it makes it more difficult to detect and they

additional organizations, even some who may be protected, they're using bitcoin which allows them remain anonymous and with people paying the ransoms, it's difficult for law enforcement to track it. >> and my question was just that, what's the advice here. should people pay this ransom to get their documents back? what are they supposed to do? >> ideally you have your system protected, you don't suffer this type of attack. and you don't have to pay, but what we're seeing here throughout asia is attacks against software that has not been updated. they have pirated software or they're using legacy software that is not supported. microsoft has put out a patch. people have to get to that. they have to go to microsoft and download that immediately. >> let's make sure we can say this in the simplest possible terms. three things you would urge device users to do today? >> the simplest thing is to go

patch. even for unsupported software, they're providing this patch so go to microsoft, anybody that's got that operating system. number two, make sure your network or system is backed up. if you are infected and your system is locked up you'll be able to reconstitute your network, recapture your data and start over again new, the third thing is you have to get security software that detects these attacks because the attackers are going to make changes and even if you find a patch they'll exploit new vulnerabilities so you have to ensure you've got security software to allow you to identify these attacks before your system is locked up. >> i'm no expert. don't click on those funky links. sean henry, appreciate it. to the white house and the search for a replacement for ousted fbi director james comey. the controversy over his firing is not quieting down in washington. we have complete coverage. pe

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president trump searching for a new fbi director. a senior administration official saying the president has not conducted in-person interviews, he's expected to only meet with a few finalists but president trump says this could be a "fast decision" suggesting he could make the call before his first foreign trip later this week. this morning, the trump administration interviewing eight candidates including andrew mccabe and senator john cornyn. on capitol hill, wide agreement the next director should not be a partisan politician. >> it is time to pick somebody that comes from within the ranks or such a reputation that has no political background at all that can go into the job on day one. weighing in the group representing current and former agents representing mike rogers who once served as

>> he understands the agency, he understands the agent families, the eight -- what we do for a living, the life-and-death situations that agents are put in, the investigative efforts. heading up the search, deputy attorney general rod rosenstein and attorney general jeff sessions who pledged to recuse himself from any russia investigation but now will help choose the person who leads it. more fallout from the president's twitter storm on friday when he posted "james comey better hope there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press." the president refusing to talk about any possible tapes over the weekend. what about the idea that in a tweet you said there might be tape recordings? >> well, that i can't talk about. i won't talk about that, all i want is for comey to be honest and i hope he will be and i'm sure he will be i hope. >> if they're not providing willingly congress should subpoena them and if they're not in existence, if this was yet another fabrication by the president he needs

clean. >> reporter: the president ignoring a growing chorus of critics, addressing graduates at liberty university. >> there will be times in your life you want quit, you want to go home perhaps to that wonderful mother sitting back there watching you and say "mom, i can't do it, i can't do it. just never quit. >> reporter: mr. trump opposes a special prosecutor or independent commission to handle the russia investigation but nearly 80% of americans support the idea, including the senate's top democrat chuck schumer saying he would back an effort to block any fbi nominee any a special prosecutor is named. >> i think there are a lot of democrats who feel that way. >> reporter: and this morning, the former director of national intelligence about threats from overseas and from president trump himself. >> our institutions are under assault both externally

russian interference in our election system and as well our institutions are under assault internally. >> reporter: i spoke to white house officials, they don't have any immediate response to that comment but several of the president's top cabinet officials are backing him up. nikki haley saying as ceo of the country mr. trump can hire and fire whoever he wants and secretary of state rex tillerson saying he's "devoted to helping the president achieve his objectives." savannah, matt, back to you. >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you. nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki is with us with a closer look at the contenders for the next fbi chief. let's see who may be on top of the list and who the dark horses might be. >> we have a big list. more than a dozen, a couple different categories we can put these in. politicians. this would be unusual, basically unprecedented to have an fbi director who comes from the ranks of eld

cornyn, texas republican senator, he's supposedly part of the process, the criticism is there is supposed to be a wall between the fbi and politics. this could be a fight if trump went with any of these names. much more traditional, somebody who fits the mold a department of justice background, michael garcia of new york, he fits both of those. so that's somebody traditionally you might look rat. you heard lindsey graham. you heard him say you want someone who can get a running start who's either already there or nose that background. andrew mccabe is in the background. the problem could be the question of loyalty to trump. he backed comey last week. would trump want to turn around and give him a ten-year term. then you have mike rogers the former congressman but former fbi agent, he was endorsed by the association representing fbi agents. that might be a name as well to keep an eye on. >> well done, mr. kornacki, thank you.

vowing to tighten the screws on north korea after its technical assistance of a ballistic missile. the regime releasing new video of the test. the launch supervised by kim jong-un himself. bill neely with the latest now. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. another week, another launch from the north koreans but this one was different. for a start it didn't fail and it appears to be a new type of rocket with a longer range, one that north korea says can carry a nuclear warhead. it was north korea's seventh test this year of a missile it says can reach u.s. military bases in the pacific. it flew high and long. the pride of leader kim jong-un who was pictured with it and applauding its launch, according to north korea. it's boasting this rocket can carry a large and heavy nuclear warhead it was different because it flew hi

than 400 miles out close to russia suggesting that north korea's missile range is growing and sparking condemnation of the launch and the leader who ordered it. >> i think you have to get in kim jong-un's head. he's in a state of paranoia, i think it was a message to south korea after the election and so we'll continue to tighten the screws. he feels it. >> north korea is banned from any rocket launch by the u.n. but it ignores that, four tests in two months have failed but its arsenal is growing, so, too, the pace of its tests and its threats to carry out a seventh nuclear test. the u.s. says its patience with north korea is over, but president trump also said he'd be

under the right circumstances. just before this rocket test, north korea said it's prepared for direct talks with the u.s. if the conditions are right. >> he can say all the conditions are right, until he meets the conditions we want, we're not sitting down with them. >> reporter: so expect new sanctions with north korea, though it says nothing will stop its nuclear program. the rocket wasn't powerful enough to reach the west coast of the u.s. and there's no evidence it can carry a nuclear warhead as the north koreas say but military analysts belief this was another technological advance. north korea as ever defiant and dangerous, savannah? >> what can the world do? what are the plans? >> well, the u.n. security council meets tomorrow to work out exactly what to do. the white house says because the rocket landed closer to russia than japan, the president can't imagine russia is pleased -- and it's not. th

talking in china but he's saying we need to talk to north korea and stop scaring it. president trump is pressuring china, north korea's only ally, to do more because one thing is clear, u.n. sanctions aren't stopping kim jong-un. the question, as he said is, what on earth will. savannah, matt? >> bill neely in london, thank you. in the meantime, president trump's revised travel ban goes back to court in seattle today. the administration wants an appeals court to reverse a march ruling by a federal judge in hawaii. that judge blocked the ban from going into effect. the president's order would bar entry to foreign nationals from six majority muslim count freeze 90 days. it would suspend the admission of refugees. president trump says the restrictions are a key part of the plan to keep out potential terrorists. the state of hawaii contends the order is a thinly veiled ban on muslims. to a new problem for united airlines. it's issuing securit

pilots and flight attendants worldwide saying its procedures for gaining access to the cockpit were apparently compromised. nbc's come costello covers aviation, what are you learned? >> so united, like all airlines, safeguards that information about keypad codes and procedures to get on to a cockpit but that information got out over the last few days. the airline is trying to fix the problem but reminding its employees under no circumstances can they share this sensitive information united airlines insists it wasn't a hack but its confidential procedures for gaining access leaked. the airline is moving foost shore up its procedures. that could mean reprogramming the keypads on every cockpit door with new access codes. veteran pilot captain john cox. >> something like this investigation getting in the wrong hands is something they

since 9/11, every flight deck door on every commercial aircraft has been reinforced with steel. new planes come off the assembly lines with tougher, fortified doors. to gain access, crew members must enter a secret keypad code and airlines have their own confidential procedures for opening the door to flight attendants while if the air. if a pilot leaves the airlines, many airlines require flight attendants to block the isle with a food cart. >> we are trained to be vigilant and our pro see yours are to remain in constant contact with the cabin. >> reporter: in a statement, united airlines tells nbc news the safety of our customers and crew as our top priority and united utilizes a number of measures to keep our flight deck secure beyond door access information. this protocol ensures our cockpits remain secure. critical since united planes take off with passengers 4,500

our thoughts are with him for sure. >> let's get the latest on the death of 19-year-old student in february. we sat down with his parents and brother last night. we're going to hear from them in a moment. but first, how the tragedy unfolded. these pictures show a vibrant life cut tragically short. 19-year-old timothy piazza died in february during an alcohol-fuelled pledge ritual known as the gauntlet. now 18 members of the fraternity beta theta pi are charged in his death. >> they made the pledges run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of alcohol. >> reporter: surveillance video shows pledges shotgunning beers and drinking from vodka bottles. after more than an hour, piazza is seen severely staggering drunkenly toward the basement steps. the brothers hear him fall and carry him back to

one brother testifies he demanded they take piazza to the hospital but he's shoved to a wall and asked to leave. at 11:53 p.m., a group text is sent around. "tim piazza might actually be a problem. going to need help." but nothing happens. piazza stands for a final time, staggering again toward the basement. later in the morning he's found there cold to the touch. finally the brothers call for help, nearly 12 hours after piazza first fell but it was too late. now our emotional conversation with timothy piazza's parents jim and evelyn and his brother mike who will be a senior at penn state next year. we began by talking about the disturbing timeline of the fateful night. >> it was horrific this wasn't boys being boys, matt. this was men who intended to force feed

alcohol into other young men and what happened throughout the night was just careless disregard for human life. they basically treated our son as road kill and a rag doll. >> nobody should consume that much alcohol. that's -- that's torture. >> there are videotapes. that house has an internal video system that was pretty extensive. how much of the video have you seen? >> we haven't seen the video yet, matt and i don't really want to see it. but i will tell you this, if the board trustees and the president sit down to watch the video with me, i'll watch it. >> you don't want to see it alone as a parent. >> no. >> but you would watch it with someone who could make decisions to make a different. >> absolutely, i don't want see it as a parent because i feel like it will be incredibly painful and the last

for 12 hours and dying a slow and painful death. >> i'm watching you as your husband talks about what is on the video. because of how inebriated tim was, he fell a number of times. and up with of those falls was down a staircase that was 15 feet long. he was severely injured and for 12 hours -- >> they slapped him, they threw water in his face, they sat on him. >> they punched him in the gut where the ruptured spleen was. >> trying to wake him up, snap out of it, sober out of it. >> they did a sternum rub. somebody knew what a sternum rub was and knew that if he didn't react to it there's a significant issue. they did nothing about it. >> when did you realize something was wrong? >> one of his roommates called me to see if i knew where he was because he hadn't come home so i

called the hospital just to see and the woman on the phone told me he was in the emergency room so i went over there immediately and when i got there i found out pretty quickly how serious it wa was. >> were you the one who called your folks? >> i had to call my mom to let her know that he was severely injured and that they were going to fly him to the hershey medical center because it was so severe they couldn't treat him there. >> when was the first time you saw tim? >> he was in surgery and then they -- the doctors came out and they basically sat us down and said he had a non-recoverable brain injury so we knew he wasn't going to make

they let us go in and see him. we talked to him a bit, we held his hand, a tear came to his eye and i said to the doctor "can he hear us?" and the doctor said "maybe. we relieved a lot of pressure, maybe." but frankly i don't know if i want to know if he heard us or not because if he heard us, he knew he was going to die. >> and there was nothing they could do? >> no, the damage was too severe, the bleeding had been too long. >> did you ask the surgeons or the doctors had he been brought to you -- >> yes. >> -- an hour, two hours, four hours, six hours, would the outcome have been different? >> i said those exact words. i said if he was brought here earlier, would the outcome be different and the doctors said yea yeah. >> so those 12 hours that he was left on a couch, on the floor wherever it was in

fraternity house when no one picked up the phone and called 911, that's what made the difference? >> yes. >> yeah, they killed him. >> when the funeral came around did any of those fraternity pledges or fraternity potential brothers come to the tune value in. >> no one from the fraternity or from penn state came to the wake or the funeral. >> no official from penn state university reached out and said i'm going to be there, i want to show up at this young man's wake or funeral? >> no, no. when i met with -- when we met with the president a few days afterwards i brought him a copy of the mass book with tim's picture on it and i slid it across the table and i said "here, since no one had the time to come to the services, i thought you might want to see this." >> what did he say? >> he just kind of took a deep breath and sat back in his chair and nodded. >> no

fun? >> not fun it's very funny on screen, we all get sprayed with mud. jason, me and charlie and a little manny, but manny didn't have as much. we had mud on us for days. it was like 17 mud days where they paint mud on you. that's not super fun. but it's very funny. the payoff is worth it. >> and you're the new susan on the block for these movies. what's it like jumping into it? >> for me it was a new experien experience i didn't think about -- you're just taking on this new thing. appreciated that susan is this kind of mom who's trying so hard to do the right thing. she wants to make her kids healthy, she wants them to eat right she wants them to not have electronics and i think that's why people will find it funny
