killed five people was not wearing a gps and right now that man remains on the loose. and today court officials are trying to provide some of those answers about why the man didn't show up for his sentencing and he's now missing. news4's kristin wright is live outside the prince george's county courthouse in upper marlboro. kristin? >> reporter: wendy, there's court confusion tonight. on friday and earlier today, the state's attorney's office told us they were trying to get to the bottom of who removed kenneth kelley's gps monitoring device and why. but now it turns out he may have never been wearing one. >> our normal routine on mother's day is to wake up in the morning, go visit the cemetery, lay down flowers. but this mother's day, in light of what just happened in court, it was even tougher. they couldn't even bring themselves to go to the cemetery. >> reporter: kenneth kelley, the drunk driver convicted of

killing the kids'she friday and is still on the run. >> no one has an answer. no one. >> reporter: earlier today they believed he was under gps monitoring and that the ankle brac bracelet was removed days before he was supposed to be sentenced. >> right now, we're still trying to determine what private company may have been doing that monitoring and why he was removed from it. >> reporter: but now a court spokesperson said gps tracking was never ordered by the court. the sheriff's department and u.s. marshalls say they're looking non-stop for kelley while the nightmare gets worse for the families of the three women and two children he took away. >> she was killed in october 2014. here it is 2017. so you can imagine how long we've been waiting for some type of closure, some type of ending to the story. >> reporter: i texted that father a little while ago this new and breaking information

about the gpson his response, wow, are you serious? tonight on news4 at 6:00, what happened to kenneth kelley if he is found and re-arrested by deputies. back to you. >> very interesting story, kristin, thanks so much. a missing person's case is now a kidnapping investigation. that investigation is changing from hampton police to newport news. keir johnson, her and her daughter chloe, their vehicle was found on sunday. police in newport news say the case is shifting there because of information provided to them by hampton's police department. but they didn't elaborate. keir and 8-month-old chloe have been missing now for about two weeks. president trump will turn the white house blue tonight in honor of fallen police officers. he promised his full support to members of law enforcement at a

ceremony today at the capital. accused some politicians of politically expedient. >> thousands of police officers from around the world also gathered at that ceremony to honor their fallen. among those remembered, the arlington officers and dozens of new york city officer who is died from complications related to the 9/11 attacks. police dogs who died were also recognized. news4's mark segraves has the story of a local father who was at today's ceremony and personally thanking the officers. >> reporter: they stood at attention, men and women in uniforms from across the country and around the world. assembled at the steps of the u.s. capitol to honor more than 230 law enforcement officers who gave their lives. roger ravine came from his home in prince george's county to personally thank officers at today's ceremony. >> thank you for your service.

>> reporter: he carried with him his son's he was a prince george's county police officer killed in the line of duty in 2015. >> officer first class, he was a great boy, he was a good boy and he served his country and his community. >> reporter: he thanked the officers from chicago, who every year form a line to honor the families of fallen, as they walk past. rabine remembers how they stood at attention as his family walked past two years ago. >> i miss him. >> to have a survivor come up and remember something that we did for him makes us feel good inside. >> reporter: also in the crowd, beth kony and her police dog. not only are the men and women honored, but police dogs are also remembered. >> these animals will risk everything to protect their handler and to protect the police department and the citizens. >> reporter: in fact, that's just what this police dog in palm beach county, florida, did last week. casper is credited with taking a bullet to save his partner's

but still very nice. currently 75 degree. everybody on the nice side. no rain to speak about. storm team4 radar all clear. not just are we clear, i mean, look at the eastern half of the nation, from kansas city across to d.c., atlanta, jacksonville. atlanta is right here. looking good as far as the sky conditions goes. we'll continue to see high pressure building in. you can see it right now. 89 st. louis, 86 in nashville. cooler weather to the north and east. that's been the troth of low pressure we've seen over the past couple of weeks. that's why we've been on the cooler side of things. but that whole pattern starts to shift. high pressure underneath the big ridge of high pressure and that's going to allow temperatures to soar. but tomorrow, also pretty good. 83 degrees. mostly sunny. nice and warm.

pipes. i'll explain coming up. at some metro stations is broken. in fact, it's been broken for years at the busy dupont circle and farragut north stations. adam tuss learned more today about a potential solution. he's live for us at the farragut north station. adam, what are you hearing? >> reporter: that's right, jim. no permanent fix is coming. a temporary solution is on tap. but we have a couple of 90-degree days coming up this week. for riders here at these stations, it means it's going to be downright hot. deep down below connecticut avenue in northwest, something isn't right. the pipes buried beneath the road that help carry cool water to chill the dupont circle and farragut north stations are broken. they've been leaking water for years. and now because the pipes are in

of the usual six. blue line trains will runhe this work was originally going to be done with day and night single tracking, but metro decided on the complete shutdown so the work can be completed faster. new concerns this evening about your safety on suitland parkway after another deadly crash there. three people were killed and another injured this morning. we talked to a traffic expert today about this stretch of roadway in prince george's county, he's live in forestville with the story. derrick? >> reporter: yet another fatal crash on the suitland parkway, near the spot where two people died two months ago. this morning's crash is still being investigated, but people are saying this road needs to be made safer. the impact was great enough that one of the vehicles burst into flames. three people in that car died. a westbound jeep and this sedan collided in the westbound lanes

new year the intersection. the driver of t injured. it shut down the busy commuter route for a good part of the morning. both vehicles were towed to begin processing. twisted, charred metal are an all too familiar scene. >> the road has required a checkered history. >> reporter: john townsend points to a crash where a mother and child were killed at nearly the same spot back in march. 12 people have died in parkway crashes over the last three years. >> what we need on suitland parkway is tougher enforcement to crack down on drivers who are going at excessive rates of speed. >> reporter: the identities of those involved have not been released. now this is a parkway and not a freeway. what's in a name, you ask. more than you might think when it comes to safety.

scene of a bus accident that frelinghuysen. we are hearing from the first responders at the bus crash and the unexpected help they had. students from a middle school injured when the bus flipped. tim furlong from our sister station in philadelphia is live in perriville with the latest on this. tim? >> reporter: this is i-95 southbound behind me. traffic is moving nicely now. we're two miles north of where this accident actually happened. the clean-up took hours, but in terms of the injuries, it could have been a lot worse. >> with their help, i appreciate it, it gave us manpower. >> reporter: the guys at the susquehanna fire department thought they'd be the first at 4:00 responders on the -- first, first responders, they weren't. there were police officers on a bus behind the crash. >> i'm glad they were there, they seemed to want to be helpful and take their cues of what we needed them to do to help out with that. >> reporter: maryland state police say the driver of this

ue bus, but the driver lost control, overcorrected and then clipped the front of the bus, sending it off the highway, down an embankment and onto its side. the dver of the honda wasn't hurt. police say the driver of that honda will likely face there wa any kind of impairment, no indication of cell phone use at this time. >> reporter: i-95 re-opened around 2:30 today. about a mile north of where that happened, it would have been on the tidings bridge, so the bus would have gone off the edge and plunged into the susquehanna river. so in terms of where it happen, it was a good thing. but what a scary event for all the kids going on that field trip. but at least most of them are going to be okay. >> tim, thanks so much. what a frightening day for them. an important warning tonight about your kids, caffeine, and those energy drinks. you might want to even tell your teenager about this story.

i'm going to put this up on my facebook page. death of aouth carolina teenager who collapsed in a classroom last month. that 16-year-old drank a large caffeinated soda, a latte, and one of those energy drinks in the two hours before his heart fell out of rhythm. a local coroner warns parents that a soda or cup of coffee can be okay, but large amounts can be deadly. tonight, we're hearing from the family of a penn state student who died while pledging a fraternity. police say sophomore timothy piazza was drunk and fell downstairs. no one at that fraternity called 911 for 12 hours. in an interview with the "today" show's matt lauer, the family says their son was treated like road kill. now 18 members of that fraternity face charges. >> most of the young men are 19, 20 years old. what should they face?

>> w that's our son. we're not going to see him ever again. assuminge'd live to 90. he's lost 70 years of his life. >> he doesn't get to graduate. he doesn't get to get mried. >> penn state has disbanded the fraternity beta theta pi. a backup fire and rescue plan is in effect in part of fairfax county now after the fire truck caught fire in the fire house. station 26 in springfield, out of service for at least a week. that truck caught fire yesterday and the flames spread to the roof of the building. no word on what caused that fire. well, it, of course, is a staple here. maryland blue crabs, thanks to a warm winter and spring, this season is off to an early and rip-roaring start. there's some good news, but early doesn't necessarily translate to a strong season.
