here on i-395. road work still going on after major water main break. new 4 at 11 begins with breaking news. >> first up tonight that breaking news here in the district, a child struck and killed in a crash. >> it started out as a hit-and-run. megan fitzgerald on the scene. >> reporter: it has been about 2 1/2 hours since this accident happened. a very active scene. police have taped off the area where the crash happened. they tell us around 8:30 when the driver collided with the 6-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital. investigators are telling us that that child has died. we are told that the driver then drove to a different location where he called 911. at this point we are told that the driver is cooperating with the investigation and is being

there is a lot we still don't know at this point which is why investigators are out here. the crime scene division is trying to understand exactly the circumstances around this incident, if the little boy went into the street or if the driver veered off. they say they don't know exactly how long they will be out here. a 6-year-old boy did die after being struck by a car. >> so sad. breaking right now a bird hit jet blue flight 1808 on its way from dulles international up to jfk airport in new york. the strike damaged an engine and caused a fuel spill. passenger julius red tweeted out this picture. the phone you see is what first responders used to stop that fuel spill. he tweeted this picture thanking the crew for getting all 66 people off safely. police say a truck

police officer on a busy commuter route. >> this was southbound 395. police opening fire on the driver after the crash. news 4's shomari stone spoke to people who heard the shots and he joins us live from arlington with details. >> reporter: good evening. right now worth mentioning that the police officer has serious injuries at a nearby hospital. as for the offramp behind me off of i-395 it is expected to open momentarily. police officers removed yellow crime scene tape and orange cones. people ask how does a traffic stop end in a police involved shooting. >> unnerving to come out here. >> reporter: this isn't what debbie king expected to see. the scene after a police involved shooting. >> i'm a little amazed because i don't live here just visiting for the day. >>

police say they stopped a wanted suspect on the road ramp on understate 395. he allegedly hit an officer with the truck. >> it made me jump. >> reporter: officers opened fire hitting the suspect, shattering the front passenger side window. the officer hit has serious injuries at a hospital and another officer was treated at the scene. >> did you recover a weapon or a gun? >> to my understanding the suspect did not have a firearm or weapon but did strike the officer with a vehicle. >> reporter: this apartment is next to the scene. this apartment is facing it. police knocked on doors here on the third floor trying to find out if any of the tenants witnessed the shooting. >> kind of frustrating that somebody would do that to an officer. but it's just really sad honestly. >> i'm a nurse. i really hope everybody, it all ends well for

president trump maintaining there was no collusion between his campaign and russia saying i look forward to this matter concluding quickly mptd. >> what about this report that the number two house republican behind speaker ryan suggested that president trump is on putin's payroll? what are we hearing about that tonight? >> reporter: california's kevin mcarthy made the comments last summer just before donald trump become republican nominee for president now under pressure from the washington post. top republicans are playing off these remarks now as something of a poorly worded joke, as they say. tweeting this, this was an attempt at humor gone wrong. he is accusing the post of trying to twist his words. back to you. that the president will be able to follow through on promises to cut taxes and roll back government regulations. the dow closed down more than 370 points today. that's the biggest single day drop in eight months. bad news for our 401 ks. there is a high level of confidence in robert mueller who tonight says he will accept the responsibility of being a special counsel in the russia probe. mueller ran the fbi for 12 years. he took over the agency just a week before the 9/11 terrorist attack. mueller was appointed by republican president george w. bush and was asked to stay on by president obama in 2011. his ten-year term was extended by two years. he retired in 2013 as the second longest serving fbi director behind only jay edgar hoover. prince georges county police and state's attorney tell us they are focussed on rebuilding

convicted of second degree assault. this video released today shows officer jose fernandez pursuing a suspect last june. hernandez then struck the suspect with the car. the suspect did not need medical attention. police in the community and people there say they were happy that authorities held their officer accountable. the state's attorney talked about that case tonight. >> officer hernandez's actions on this day not only violated the trust of this community but was in opposite of values. >> the officer faces up to ten years in prison when he is sentenced in july. graphic video shows the moment d.c. police shot and killed a woman last night. we warn you in advance some of you may find it disturbing. refused commands to drop her

weapon and raised the gun right before officers opened fire. police respo to the bald eagle reccenter yesterday after getting reports of somebody with a weapon there. authorities say he started waving the gun after crashing her car. they tell us they recovered her semi-automatic pistol from the scene. a special honor tonight for charnice milton, a local journalist gunned down by a stray bullet in d.c. two years ago. family and friends announced the book store project. it will be housed in the basement of this building, the we act radio. milton was killed while waiting for a bus. police say atv and dirt bike riders were involved in that shootout and someone used her as a human shield. for more information on the book store and how you can donate search book store in our nbc washington app. some other top stories. we just learned a second person

brother he never knew was kidnapped from a florida shopping mall and brutally murdered. the walshs helped pass the missing children act of 1984 which led to the creation. >> i always grew up with my parents telling me we need to make sure adam didn't die in vein. >> reporter: in the basement of this five story building you will find this room, a door with no marker. a place that a lot of people know about but rarely visit. this is the first time that any video cameras have been around in. hundreds of thousands of files each a different case, each of them representing a child that has been recovered over the last 33 years. >> we have seen tens of thousands of cases. for the family that is going through it today that matters. >> cursed with my dad's nose.

maybe you have heard them. they are back. thousands of cicadas unexpectly hatched and that means you probably won't spend as much time outdoors. they are harmless and kind of annoying if you don't like bugs. they are noisy and the clicking is amplified when a bunch are together. cicadas hatched ahead of schedule and before their cycles of 13 and 17 years. early hatching has happened before. scientists are trying to figure out what brood these bugs belong to. doug is convinced they are ten or six. >> the next time they come out is 2021. they tend to come out four years early. the brood 6 aren't in our area. those are back in ohio and portions of the carolinas and the south. >> we don't think weather has anything to do with it? >> no but they are

warm air. take a look at warm temperatures. yesterday i showed you it was all out to the west. now it is all across the east. 91 on this map. the warmest on the map we did see a couple of higher numbers. boston you saw temperature around 90 degrees. tomorrow high of 92. mostly sunny, hot and a little on the humid side. stepping out the door tomorrow morning it will be on the muggy side for sure. temperature around 71. 86 by noon. recess will be a little warm if you are thinking about getting lunch outdoors it might be a little hot. 92 degrees at 4:00 definitely a hot evening. friday high temperature 88 and chance of scattered thunderstorms. that is with the frontal boundary. that front will move through and change the pattern again back to the cooler pattern. high temperature 74 on saturday. 76 on sunday. a lot of cloud cover this weekend. all in all a pretty nice weekend. another front comes through monday. that one has a chance of seeing
