"the new york times" reporting michael flynn told trump's transition team that he was under federal investigation for secretly working as a paid lobbyist for turkey during the campaign. despite the warning, mr. trump made flynn his national security adviser before firing him 24 days into his presidency. it comes as the russia investigation is now under new management. former fbi director robert mueller taking over as special counsel. the president only recently ripped into the investigation releasing a measured statement insisting a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know, that there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity, adding i look forward to this matter concluding quickly. mueller's appointment blind siding the white house. they only worded it after the order was signed. ro

it's in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appointment a special prosecutor for this matter. democrats and republicans praising the move. >> i think this is a positive thing for the american people. there's no conflict of interest from the hill, the white house, or from within the justice departme department. >> reporter: this morning a report that could strain the relationship between the president and republican leaders. "the washington post" reporting how majority leader kevin mccarthy said during a private conversation last summer there's two people i think people paid, the california congressman and trump. when some lawmakers laughed, mccarthy quickly added, swear to god. the comment captured in a recording the post said it listened to. speaker ryan interrupts saying no leaks. this is how we know we're a real family here. ryan's people dismissing the talk.

>> everybody laughs. you know it's a joke. that's all there is to it. no one believes it to be true. >> reporter: back at the white house, the president leaves for his first foreign trip tomorrow. this morning hosting the president of colombia, this is his first time taking question since word he shared classified with the russians and now the appointment of the special counsel. >> all right. peter, thank you. let's dive deeper into robert mueller's appointment as special counsel to run the investigation. pete williams is our justice correspondent. this broke about 12 hours ago. tell me the reaction to mueller and can he truly be independent? >> reporter: a positive reaction from capitol hill and elsewhere. the justice department wanted someone with instant

he has it all. it will take him a little while to get up to speed, but it's hard to think of anybody who could do that more quickly. he'll have all the power of the u.s. attorney. he can approve avenues of investigation, authorize subpoenas for witnesses or get documents. the last independent counsel was kenneth star. the law allowing the appointment of independent counsels lapsed in 1999 because congress was concerned investigations could be too free wheeling. as special counsel he has less independence. if he wants to expand the investigation, he'll have to get permission from the deputy attorney general, the person who appointed him, and a special counsel can be fired for misconduct or violating justice department policies but congress has to be told why. thank you. >> that brings us to jason

testify before that committee next week. congressman, good morning. let me ask you about the appointment of director mueller. do you have confidence in him? do you expect to accept his results, whatever he finds? >> i think he'll be broadly supportive. he has a storied history, ten years leading the fbi in the bush and the obama administration. it couldn't be a better choice. he's in the latter part of his career with nothing to prove. he'll be a fabulous job. >> is this a fabulous case of when you need a special prosecutor? >> i don't know that i would have done that. i have not seen evidence of collusion. it begs the question, why do they need a special prosecutor? what are they trying to prosecutor? but the department of justice made this case. there are a lot of people who wanted to see this. i think he'll do a good job. >> isn't it fairly

investigation by the fbi and then the fbi director gets fired by the person who is at the center of the investigation, his campaign, isn't that a pretty clear case of needing a special prosecutor? >> some have made that case. i just believe that there are literally thousands of career fbi agents, men and women who also have impeccable credentials. what i like about the selection of mueller is he used to run that organization. you won't lose the benefit of the work that has been done over the last several months. he'll be able to take it up and continue. >> congressman, i have to ask you about the story, "the new york times" reporting that michael flynn goes to the transition team for trump before taking office and says, look, i'm under federal investigation for possibly secretly working for turkey during the campaign and despite that information being given to the trump transition, he's made the national security adviser and given access to the most

government. does that make any sense to you? >> well, i think one of the questions that also needs to be asked along that way is the white house itself does not make a determination as to whether or not somebody gets a security clearance. that goes to the office of -- >> but wait. but you're putting him in that position where he has access to all those secrets and you know he's under federal investigation for secretly working for another country. >> well, that's why -- it wasn't necessarily a secret. he is disclosing that. our committee has made a reference, the oversight committee, has made a recommendation for final determination. general flynn should not have taken money from turkey or russia, but the group that actually makes the determination as so whether or not they get a security clearance is the office of the director of noshl intelligence. >> but hiring him as the national security adviser, does that sound like good judgment in your opinion? >> well, look,

or financial records that show connections between the trump organization and russian officials whether in the putin government or in the private sector. i think that's an issue in this case. i think he will be able to control leaks. he's shown he can do that in the past. >> nicole, the reaction from the white house and the president himself is measured. he released a statement. he haven't seen a tweet on this. do you think the message has gotten through to him that not only does what he say carrie political significant kans, but in this case, it's legal as well. >> i think the message started to get through early yesterday. i know that was the effort underway at the white house inside and outside. they were trying to make clear that this question that hangs over him is going to prevent him from doing anything else he wanted to do on the world stage or anything else he wants to communicate will be impossible until he starts to lift this ou

offshore. >> this is where we swim. this is where our kids swim. this is about as far out as i would come with my kids. we're close to the shoreline. and there have been several recent attacks. in florida a shark attacked this teenager biting his foot and ankle. in hawaii, this man narrowly escaped after a 12 -foot shark attacked him. >> his leg was completely mauled. >> and in california this mother of three attacked. a great white dragging her under nearly killing her. >> i see a fin. >> now researchers from the cal state long beach shark lab are trying to track the shark's every move, and they invited us along. when the sharks get close, they spring into action. >> okay, the researchers are putting the net in the water. we have eyes on the shark. look how close we are to the beach. the shark is right over here. they're going to try to capt

important warning about the gadgets. she was driving her ten-year-old daughter home from a swim meet when she heard an odd noise. she saw her daughter's face turning red and drool from her mouth. her daughter removed one of the metal parts of the fidget spinner and it was lodged in her throat. an x ray revealed that to be the case, and the daughter went into surgery to remove the objects. she's now safely at home. she writes from this i wish to off some word of caution to parents. the bushings pop out easily. fidget spinners, they come with various instructions depending on the manufacturer. some simply note they're suitable for kids over ten while others have a clear choking hazard warning on the label and say they're not for children under three. we reached out to the makers of the toys for comment and have not heard back.

help sunscreen buyers avoid getting burned. the results show a lot of the spf numbers on the label are higher than the actual protection in the lotion and sprays inside your bottle. a major notice on sunscreen just in time for summer. a new study says the advertised level of spf protection on labels could be critically off. in a report released this morning, consumer reports says that some sunscreens fail to provide the level of protection promised on the package. up to 58 lotions, sprays q and sticks evaluated by consumer reports, 20 tested at less than half their labeled spf number. >> you have the risk of damaging your skin if you're relying on it to protect yourself. >> according to this study, five product labelled with an spf of 50 or 50 plus had a level between 0 and 9. consumer reports called out natural sunscreens as well. >> we found the natural sunscreens and those are the

he has been in sort of serious health decline for years now. so the largest context is this is happening at 77 while early is not surprising to people who have covered him because of his ill health for years. >> try to put into perspective for us, roger ailes and his early career at fox and then roger ailes and his departure from fox. >> reporter: well, it's a complicated story. i wrote a biography of ailes that came out a couple of years ago. on one hand he changed both media and politics forever. he built fox news from nothing into a most valuable asset valued at over $15 billion. on the other hand he ruled fox news with an iron fist. women who worked at fox news as we've now learned were subject to a hostile work environment and sexual harassment, and he could be a the terrorizing figure within the company. it's a very complicated story.

first there was it have battle of the breakfast. then the appetizer and salad. now it's time for the main event. the entree. we have rick from pennsylvania. he's a single father of two who loves to cook. he's making his famous pineapple chicken. to my left, stephanie brown. she's from charlotte, north carolina. stephanie an air force captain is graduating this weekend from johnson and wells culinary school. she's making red wine braised short ribs. good morning. already chewing. sitting in our tasting counter, dylan and jenna. those are our judges. rick, let's start with you. it looks pretty healthy. >> it is. obviously there's chicken pineapple and broccoli. i use a little brown sugar and i use soy sauce, and i make up a

cooked together. break it down. that's the thickening agent. we heat up the chicken with butter and garlic, get that going. brown it up. sometimes i cut them up. they're better. once that gets going, add the pineapple and juice. this is pineapple juice. you can get it in a can. it makes it easy. soy sauce, brown sugar. let it simmer down. get it a little thick. get a spoon. if it stays separated, it's good. >> bring it to a boil? >> bring it to a boil. don't overcook the broccoli. just blanch it. >> top it off with green onion and celery seed and bam, there you go. >> all right, mama. you ready? did i just call you mama? >> yeah. that's fine. >> we have veggies and aromatics.

onion, keep it big. make sure they're a good sized. you want them to hold up. we have chicken stock and i know this is a beef dish, but i like chicken stock because the flavor is better. if you prefer beef stock, that fine. the short ribs have been sered and taken out of the pod. we have the vegetables that are browned. what we're going to do next is add flour. and what this does is this is going to help thicken up the sauce later. and we're going to give it a stir and let it cook down, and once it cooks down, we're going to go ahead and add your wine. >> can it be any red wine? >> it doesn't have to be dc i use a $7 bottle of caber nay and it's fine. yout
