why this woman says the man who pointed a gun at her also cost her thousands of dollars. a local mother's battle with addiction and homelessness, what she achieved just this week and how she says her children inspired her. >> failure was not an option. news 4 at 11 starts now. >> did you see it? what a light show. we begin with the weather and a quick round of storms that came blasting through our region. >> we had reports of heavy rain and hail tlmpt was pretty good lightning show that had a lot of you sharing pictures and video. check out what news 4 cruise captured along the river. this was around 9:00 near the key bridge. flashes as planes were coming in to land. >> clouds lit up behind capitol dome. here is a look at some lightning flashes. one more from our tower camera he

really impressive shot as we slow this one down for you. let's go to doug kammerer. >> we were showing that cloud to cloud lightning, the finger lightning that we like to see out there. beautiful night tonight for it. the storms are passing by. those severe thunderstorms did not cause a lot of damage but there was some damage. i will take you about six hours and show you how the storms developed. boy did they blow up. severe thunderstorm warning for just about every county here and then finally starting to die down as we move to the south. each little dot here represents hail and wind damage across parts of the area. a lot of hail up to quarter sized hail. this area right here we saw a 66 miles per hour wind gust in towards portions of prince georges county. now they are all gone. the storms are out of here for now and for the next few

we went to the playground. >> reporter: xavier's family was having a cookout. a driver hit him about 8:30 at night. he died at a hospital. there is no cross walk here. the driver drove to another location, called 911 and police say he is cooperating. >> you can put them anywhere you like. >> reporter: people in the neighborhood leave stuffed animals at his memorial. relatives, friends hugged, cried, paid tribute to the boy who liked helicopters. >> going to have to be strong for his mom. >> reporter: the family spokesperson, we asked who was with xavier when he was hit. >> i really can't speak on that. >> reporter: she does speak on the need for speed bumps on this busy roadway. xavier's friends will forever miss him. in southeast d.c. i'm

stone news 4. today's deadly times square crash may have been deliberate according to law enforcement sources in new york. richard rojas, authorities say this man drove the wrong way through crowds of people. an 18-year-old from michigan lost her life. rojas allegedly told plooez police he heard voices and wanted to die. his friends say he was going through a tough time and posting crazy stuff online. that wreck could have been an act of terrorism. >> everyone is just grabbing us and telling us to pull back. >> the first feeling was that it might be something like an attack when a car plows. >> there were no

they believe this was a singular act. sources tell nbc news that rojas had a dishonorable discharge from the navy. new at 11 d.c. jail officials are investigating a second inmate death this month. kenneth parker was found unresponsive in his cell this afternoon. parker was charged in the 2014 shooting. you may remember stancil was shot in the head and the little boy survived. he was just 9 years old at the time. d.c. jail officials have not released information on the circumstances of parker's death. a family's fear realized after a regularly scheduled check in turned into deportitation proceeding for an undocumented woman in fairfax. friends, family and immigration advocates protested outside the immigration and customs enforcement office

she came to this country from elsalvador more than a decade ago. she popped up on ice's radar when stopped. speaking through translator her husband said his wife is not a criminal. >> really feels devastated by what is happening. we talk about the fact that she is not a criminal. she is not anybody that deserves to be in this situation. >> she received two deferals in 2014 and '15. senators tim cane and congressman jerry connelly said they seek more information about her detention. more traffic problems for some tomorrow. mcarthur boulevard may not reopen until monday. you will want to avoid that area again if you can. d.c. water crews

repairs on the water main that ruptured yesterday. old age is getting in the way. the pipes date back to before the civil war. it was installed in 1860 tlmpt was a program to fix the aging. >> it has been a deadly night on our area roadways. at least three people killed in crashes in just the last five hours. chopper 4 over the scene of one crash involving a pedestrian. a woman was killed crossing this street at the intersection of emery grove. the driver of the truck that hit her stayed on the scene. no word yet on charges or what caused the crash. in prince georges county a school bus was involved in a deadly crash. there were no children on the bus. the driver of another vehicle died when the two collided closing temple hills road between henderson road

the scene tonight and are working to learn what happened before the crash. this is traffic camera video of route 15 near martin luther king highway in atlanta. police tell us a nissan suv hit a tree. a man sitting in the back seat of the car died. the driver and front seat passenger has serious injuries. president trump ripping the appointment tonight of special counsel to investigate campaign's potential ties to russia calling the whole thing a witch hunt. the president answered questions today with the columbian president. he denied asking james comey to stop investigating former nsa chief michael flynn and said he did not share top secret yens with russian diplomats. >> the entire thing has been a witch

tonight a carjacking victim shares her story only with news 4. last week a man with a gun forced her out of her car at a stop light at the intersection of telegraph road and east drive. the suspect led police on a chase that ended when he totalled her car. now the victim is out thousands of dollars. susan hogan has her story. >> reporter: carjacking victim elizabeth is reliving a nightmare. >> he stood right in front of where i am sitting and pointed the gun at me. >> reporter: she will never forget what the suspect said next. >> then he said get out i'm desperate. >> the suspect raced down nearby streets taking out four cars before crashing into a tree. her car totalled and inside trashed, seats torn apart. >> all four sides had been used as like a

>> reporter: her car just eight months old with only 5,000 miles was declared a total loss by her insurance company. >> what did you expect? >> my initial thinking was i will be out the payments i made for the last eight months. i can suck that up. but i didn't expect to be out the complete 10,000 that i put down. >> reporter: thanks to depreciation elizabeth is only walking away with $2,000 cash after paying off her loan. >> i have been carjacked and now i was out thousands of dollars. i didn't have the money to start over again. >> reporter: elizabeth quickly realized there was little help for victims like herself. >> it scared me. >> reporter: victims can get financial assistance from a state mandated victims fund but does not always offer money for people like elizabeth who lost property. director of victim services

burglary victims. there are certain things that can be compensated and things that can't. it is property crime versus crimes that involve injuries or death or long term medical necessities or children involved. >> reporter: while the auto insurance company is honoring the terms of the policy it is still hard to take when she is left without a vehicle or the means to buy a new one. >> it doesn't seem fair that you didn't do anything to have your car totalled. you have no recourse. >> we reached out to the national insurance crime bureau and told us consumers can question their insurance company but bottom line the policy is what they are bound to follow. in the end elizabeth's insurance company did extend her rental for another week and dealership where she purchased the car offered to give her a good deal on the next one. back to you. in news 4 your health women with advanced breast cancer are living longer. a study today from the

cancer institute found that the five-year survival rate among women under age 50 had doubled from 18% to 36% since 1992. the median survival time for this group grew from just under two years to almost 39 months. the survival rate for women diagnosed between ages 50 and 64 also grew. researchers believe this is due to improvements in treatment. we have posted a link to the full study in our nbc washington app. heads up if you drive in d.c. you are already accustomed to sharing the road with cycli t cyclists. it is bike to work day and it is expected to have some record breaking numbers. organizers tell us more than 17,000 people use pedal power to get to work during last year's event and they expect more this year. there will be 85 refreshment pit stops all over the dmv for cyclists and dozens are planning on doing this tomorrow.

see nice rainbows. very rarely do you get to see pictures like this. take a look at this sky. these only form under the anville of supercell thunderstorms. look at this. this is because the sun is shining off at an angle. these are cool air pockets way up high in the atmosphere and those cool air pockets bring down clouds just enough to give you balls of clouds. how cool is that? >> that is one of the -- mammatus. i used to see them all the time in colorado. you don't get to see them a lot here. consider yourself lucky if you saw them. i got a lot of pictures today. currently 72 degrees. winds out of the southwest. temperatures have gone up over the past few hours. a lot of us were in the 60s earlier. now everybody in the 70s. 78 in

temperature of 80 degrees there. we saw the storms come through. they are moving on through and then behind this we are watching a cold front back to the west. that cold front will move through tomorrow. look at this. big-time storms. snow back towards denver. tornadoes in the middle part of the country. tomorrow a mess here tomorrow afternoon. 2:00 we are still okay. not a bad afternoon but warm and humid. here is 4:00. scattered showers around the area and more right on through 6:00 tomorrow night. if you have dinner plans tomorrow night or thinking about heading out make sure you keep the umbrella handy. on saturday a much different weather pattern moving in. we will see a lot of cloud cover. temperatures tomorrow up to 88. not another 80 for the rest of the month. that heat that we have seen is out of here. we get cooler saturday and sunday. it will be cloudy but pretty nice weekend. chance of storms
