police set down spikes and blew out the tires. you can see the ambulance riding on its rims down indian head highway. officers followed the driver from prince george's county. tracee wilkins has the new information she learned today. >> reporter: we've learned a lot of information, more about this guy, who he is, his background, also the charges he's now facing for stealing an ambulance from this hospital. we're here at prince george's county hospital center. right over there is the ambulance bay where the ambulance was taken around 6:00 a.m. this started here and led police on an hour and a half long chase. police say 43-year-old william person was here at the hospital,

jump into an ambulance and steal it. that chase went from prince george's county out, and then back to prince george's county. at one point, he was driving on rims and outrunning police. >> several attempts were made to engage with him as he was driving. the way it's characterized to me, he had a thousand yards there, he was not responsive, he kept on driving. they tried everything at various points. this went on for about an hour and a half, until it was stopped here at the intersection of allentown and bran ok. >> reporter: we spoke with his family and we'll tell you what they had to say about this incident and his background. and the charges he's facing in both counties. we also looked into how this was allowed to happen. when these ambulances park at this hospital, they are supposed to turn them off and

or at least lock the doors. it appears, that's not what happened here. i'm tracy wilkins, back to you. now to the story of a fire that engulfed a home in college park overnight. with graduation coming up, the timing couldn't have been worse for one of the students living in the house. this afternoon, we're hearing from her. news4's kristin wright has the story. >> reporter: you look at this house now and you can tell how bad this fire was. the good thing, however, the three university of maryland students who were inside, got out of the house safely and they are okay. but this was a bad fire. the blames were intense. there was a lot of smoke. there was even a partial roof collapse at one point. now the students are so thankful that they got out with their lives, but one

this afternoon and evening. we'll continue to track storms until about 11:00 p.m., after that, drying out. 89 right now. by 11:00, low 70s, much more comfortable over the weekend. but as far as the severe potential this afternoon, it's about the heavy rain in any thunderstorms, also can't rule out isolated damaging winds and some hail as well. doug's going to have a look at the weekend forecast in ten minutes. police have ended an amber alert for a girl who has been missing for nearly a month. keir johnson disappeared with her 8-month-old daughter. police say they found the car the pair was traveling in. it's standard procedure, they say to end an amber alert seven days after it's activated. fairfax county police are looking for a man they say was upskirting women at walmart. police say this man was

famous alien trilogy. that came out in 2012, got mixed reviews. a lot of people dinged it as being too heady in trying to explore mankind's origins. i was probably one of the few who liked that one a little bit. but this one almost reacted to the backlash by swinging in the other direction. it's really a lot of body horror here. it's almost like a friday the 13th, jason in space. like a slasher flick in how bloody and grotesque. i like it's scarier the less of the alien you see, maybe a glimpse down a dark corridor. this one throws too much in your face for me. but i can't believe i actually am saying this, but my favorite alien movie of the year, wasn't directed by

this thunderstorm watches out there. >> and where, doug? >> we're looking at a couple of strong thunderstorms down to the south. no watch right now in our area. right now, taking a look, we're not looking at a warning. we are looking at a strong storm in fredericksburg. would not be surprised to hear about one coming up. this is one warned storm near elkton. in and around the d.c. metro area, there's nothing going on. it's all down to the south. look at what we're seeing, back towards madison county, around culpeper, you're going to continue to get hammered over the next hour or so. a few more just south of manassas, in through prince william, these are all moving off to the east. ask th and then tracking this one here, this was to be a little bit earlier around

maybe southern stafford, in towards king george county. so watching that one now, another one behind also with a lot of lightning, but fredericksburg definitely under the gun along i-95. to the north, i'm looking at these storms, but there's a boundary back here. notice a couple of storms starting to fire along that boundary. these are moving down into your area. we're not out of the woods, loudoun and montgomery counties. we may see these strengthen. i'll be watching that closely, but right now all the energy is to the south of the d.c. metro area. there's another boundary, actually, right here. you can see that, this is an old out-flow boundary, that's moving our way too. we'll see storms off and on throughout the evening. something else we've seen, a hot afternoon. high of 92. a we're now at

miles per hour. 88 now, gaithersburg. 93 in huntingtown. annapolis, southwest winds, so no water interaction there. 92 degrees in weapon right now, and 90 towards martinsburg. another hot day. i want to show you this, here's the energy we got around our region. the wider view, a lot of storminess for the west, but look at this storm way up here. and look at these clouds. right in through the buffalo region, these are moving down to the south. that is a backdoor cold front and look at the temperatures behind this, 89, d.c. 55 in buffalo. that's the cool air that's making its way down over the next 24 hours. by tomorrow morning, you're going to feel the difference. highs tomorrow around 92. -- or rather, 72. 20 degrees difference, 92 to 72, during the day tomorrow. lots of clouds, much cooler, isolated shower possible. but i do not expect any games to

we're tracking two new explosive leaks in that russia investigation. they're coming from "the new york times" and "the washington post." >> and they surfaced just minutes after the president and first lady took off on their first overseas trip. blayne alexander is live now at the white house where damage control is in overdrive. >> let's break down the two major headlines that have just come out within the past hour. first from "the washington post." now "the post" is citing people who are familiar with the russia

investigation and now reporting that in that investigation, a current white house official is now considered a significant person of interest. now as of right now, we don't know who that white house official is. secondly, "the new york times" article, the second major headline that's come out within the past hour, goes back to the oval office meeting that the president held last week with the two russian diplomats. "the new york times" is reporting that the president called the fired fbi director james comey a nut job and said that he expected that his firing, his termination of comey would ease the pressure around the russia investigation. the white house has said that a thorough investigation will prove, as the president has said repeatedly that there's no collusion between the campaign and any russian foreign government. but all of this comes as the president is wrapping up a turbulent week, leaving on a

change the narrative. wheels up for president trump embarking on his first overseas trip. nine days with stops in saudi arabia, israel and the vatican and a visit to sicily for the g7 s summit. >> this is the most important trip that a president has taken in a long time. he has to show, despite what's been going on with the russia investigation, that he's in charge. >> reporter: the president's team leaves washington, still reeling from a tumultuous week. today on capitol hill, house members were briefed on the federal investigation into russia and possible trump campaign ties. now in the hands of a special counsel appointed by deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. >> his reason for doing this appointment is as much about returning public confidence. >> reporter: meanwhile, the president now weighing at least six possible replacements for the fbi director he fired, james comey. the front-runner, rm

things got out of hand at the agency's headquarters in southwest. >> the journalist name is john donnelly. he said he was pinned against a wall by security guards and then forced to leave the building yesterday, after he tried to ask michael riley a question after the news conference had wrapped up. donnelly said that he was polite and there was no justification for the amount of force used against him. in a statement, the fdc says we apologized more than once and let mr. donnelly know that the fcc was on heightened alert based on several threats. they didn't tell us what the threats were. the national press club pushed back, saying, it's completely unacceptable to physically restrain a reporter who has done nothing wrong and force him or her to leave a public building as if a crime has been committed. c

saying he's very sorry it happened. there have been growing concerns about press freedom during the trump administration. last week, a virginia journalist was arrested after repeatedly asking tom price a question. we'll keep our eyes open. we're also getting new details about the deadly rampage in times square. prosecutors say the suspect told police officers he wanted to, quote, kill them all. and they would have to shoot him to stop them. court documents show richard rojas said he had smoked marijuana laced with pcp before the crash. he's accused of ramming into a crowd of people before the launch hour killing a teenager and injuring nearly two dozen others. our warm weather is going to mean a lot of folks will want to get out on the water. today d.c. water launched two new skimmer boats that are helping to keep anacostia and potomac rivers cleaner and safer. news4's k

there's breaking news happening right now in the district. police are on the scene of a shooting on michigan avenue in northeast. it happened in the area of the brookland metro station. we do know that one person was shot. we don't know much more about it. right now, shomari stone is on his way to the scene and we'll have more throughout the afternoon and on the nbc washington app. one of our other developing stories this afternoon is right account t outside the window, the chance of storms in the region just in time to affect our friday night plans. >> team coverage this afternoon with doug and amelia, what's it looking like right now? >> right now, storms mostly to the south. and some of them b

this could go on throughout the night. >> and we think by midnight, it's going to be mainly quiet. and wendy walked by, wetter weather this weekend was the perfect way to describe it. >> areas closer to the chesapeake bay may not get out of the 60s. much cooler weather for sure. you see nothing around the d.c. metro area. still tracking a boundary to the north. but not a lot firing until you get to baltimore, where it's been a mess. down to the south, we're tracking this storm around warrenton and culpeper. that storm there, culpeper getting hit pretty hard. and another storm is moving into culpeper, rappahannock and fauquier county. and this has been the biggest one in the last hour or so. was severe at one point, but a very strong storm, a lot of hail out of this one, a lot of lightning too, especially east of fredericksburg, in towards lower stafford

george's county as it continues to move east. one area to watch, back to the west, these storms in west virginia, these are going to push through and combine. we may see some development here in through northern virginia over the next couple of hours. we'll watch that for sure. we're also watching the temperatures. right now, 89 degrees in the city. winds out of the south at 10 miles per hour. but look at our weather underground temperatures. 94 in twin brook, 93 in centreville. 91 on the mall in d.c. amelia, they will not be like this tomorrow. >> yeah about 25 degrees cooler. we'll start the day in the 60s. plenty of clouds around, as we work our way to the lunch time, a high tomorrow of 72, maybe an isolated shower tomorrow morning, but for the most part it's looking dry and cloudy. preakness tomorrow, cool, dry up there. outdoor exercise over the weekend, looking nice for that. but i'd hold off on getting the car washed. storms in the forecast, maybe a

the northern virginia fine arts festival kicks off tomorrow at the reston arts center. it's free to the public, but they ask for a $5 donation if possible. the event raises money for the greater reston arts center. the reston town center closes its interior street for the hundreds who will be there setting up their works. it's graduation season across the country, and for some getting that degree is extra special. >> meagan fitzgerald has the uplifting story of a mother of three who went from living on the streets to earning her master's. >> just need to keep our family strong. >> reporter: like most
