news 4's jared ward has been following the story since it broke yesterday. he joins us from campus right now. what is the latest? >> reporter: well we do know once the ceremonies take place, there will be a moment of silence for the student who died that the spot just behind me there. now the circumstances of that death are still under investigation. and still trying to figure out why, but we do know some facts there, and we do know that this is affecting people over the state of maryland. it was about 3:00 a.m. yesterday morning. a buoy state student was visiting this campus. now he was waiting for an uber at this bus stop just outside of montgomery hall when a university of maryland student came up and by all accounts that student was a stranger. he ended up stabbing the buoy state student in the chest. now the suspect was arrested right here at scene, the victim died later at a hospital. now neither has been identified, but the sadness is known to people on both of those mp

police had been told that he was holding a roommate hostage inside of that home. the fairfax common wealth attorney found the officer actions were justified. also this morning, we have new details about this, we brought this to you yesterday. the fire that broke out near the shady grove metro station. montgomery county fire and rescue tell us now they believe it was an accident. the flames caused about $100,000 in damage, totally destroyed one of the buses. and damaged several others. still not clear this morning though how exactly that fire started. right now two big races are happening in our area that could impact your sunday morning plans. the marine corps half marathon is taking over the streets of fredericksburg, virginia. there's also a five mile run there. some participants are even doing both races in a new event called the devil dog double. new video from the partners at the start of the half marath

thousands after of of people in venezuela took to the streets yesterday to mark 50 days of protests against the government of president nicholas ma dur row. the protest started peacefully but later descended into violence with police in riot gear launching tear gas and stun grenades. protesters then threw the canisters and others back at them. now protesters blame the government for soaring inflation, shortages of everything from food to medicine and crackdown on human rights. right now, take a look at this, thousands of people on alert because of this. this is out near san diego where this brush fire sparked yesterday morning. and you can see it was just out of control there. a campfire near the fast redden gate fire has been evacuated. and people who actually live nearby, they've been told to prepare now to leave their homes. fire grown to more than 1,

good morning, cloudy and cool on this sunday morning, great day to get out and get some exercise. get in a bike ride or a run or a hike. as the air will be fresh and cool throughout the rest of the morning. and by noontime, we'll be in the mid-60s. upper 60s near 70 for much of the afternoon under the cloud cover, but we ought to stay dry and rain does move in. beginning tomorrow morning, i'll have the new hour by hour timing on that in just a few minutes. cloud computing has defeated classic empire in the preakness. >> that was a close one. and there's the new winner this morning. cloud computing dashed the dreams of a triple crown as he raced across and look how close the finish

street she grew up on. >> we would play the dodge ball, kick ball. >> reporter: where there were good memories, there was always something tragically missing. >> i need to know. i need to know answers. >> reporter: in 1974, lisa was just seven when her sister brenda, the oldest of five kids, never came home after school. there was just days before brenda's 14th birthday, a night lisa will never forget. >> and when i come down the hall bay, my dad was on the bed -- it was my bed, and he was crying. and he was saying my baby's gone. my baby's gone. i've never seen my dad cry before. >> reporter: 43 years later, what happened to brenda davidson is still a mystery. rumor has it she snuck out of school and caught a bus to run away. there's never been proof she bought a ticket

lisa says her parents felt helpless and grew frustrated with the investigation. one phone call between her mother and a detective still stings today. >> he said that they ruled her as a runaway and my mom was an unfit mother. >> one of the cases here -- >> reporter: in alexandria, virginia, it's a familiar story for callahan walsh. a child advocate with the national center more missing and exploited children or nicnac. >> parents were quick to realize there was little help. >> reporter: his parents started the center in 1984 after his brother adam, a brother he never knew, was kidnapped from a florida shopping mall and brutally murdered. shocked to learn there was no national crime system for missing kids. the walshs helped pass the missing children's assistant act of 1984 which led to the creation of nicnac. >> i always grew up with parents telling we need to make sure adam didn't die in vain. >> reporter: down in the

building, you'll find this room, a door with no marker. but a place that a lot of people know about, but rarely visit. in fact, this is the first time that any video cameras have been allowed in to film what's around me. hundreds of thousands of files, each of them a different case. each of them with a child that's been recovered over the last 33 years. >> and we're not going to stop looking until we know what happened to every single child. >> reporter: michelle, the chief operating officer at nicnac says to date, the center helped recover more than 232,000 children, or about 19 kids a day. she says their 24 hour call center and social media have been instrumental that they could do more. >> we've seen tense of thousands of cases, but for the family that's going through it today, that's the only one that matters. >> reporter: in virginia where brenda davidson disappeared, the agency records show more than 160 active missing children cases. many of them lik

at 9:42, we have breaking news right now we are learning new information about the murder on the university of maryland campus. >> news 4's derek ward joins us live from college park with just released details about student who was arrested. hi derek. >> reporter: good morning. yes, well university of maryland campus police have just released the name and the photo of the suspect in this case. he is 22-year-old sean christopher abanski. he is of maryland. right now he is facing three charges, first and second-degree murder as well as first degree assault. now as this information comes out, we are still awaiting the name of the victim. it's being withheld so that family members can be notified. but he was the student at buoy state university. the suspect was a student here at the university of maryland and it a
