the real history being made is this is president trump's first trip to this country as president and his first chance to tip his toe in the water of a conflict that has defied his predecessors' best efforts to solve. you might recall the pledge he made a few weeks ago that we will get it done. in jerusalem he'll see the most visible symbol of the conflict. jerusalem is a city of significant importance to muslims and jews as well as christians. among the highlights on the president's schedule here he'll be visiting the church of the holy sepulcher, visiti the plac people believe jesus is entombed. he'll be visiting the western wall, also known as the wailing wall. he'll visit with prime minister netanyahu, later he and the first lady will dine with the prime minister and his wife, a west bk

mahmoud abbas as well and then a visit to a museum. the president will be shadowed by his pledge to move the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem which israelis view as their eternal capital however he's been persuaded to hold off on that pledge. it would be seen as an endorsement of israel's claim in a place still widely regarded as disputed territory. but it is something worth watching to see if he makes further comments along the way during his visit here. we'll send it back to you now in new york. >> very busy couple days, lester, thanks so much. lester will have much more on the president's trip live tonight from jerusalem on "nbc nightly news." unambassador nikki haley also in the middle east on her own first overseas trip. she's getting a firsthand look at the impact of the syrian refugee crisis. today national correspondent craig melvin is traveling with the outspoken ambassador and sat down with her exclusively about that hand the other issues facing the trump administration. craig, good morning. >> ree

morning to you. we've been traveling with ambassador haley for a few days now seeing firsthand the effects of syria's six-year-old war. in a wide-ranging exclusive interview, she talked about the devastating humanitarian crisis that persists here, she also became the first trump cabinet official to publicly endorse the idea of a special counsel to investigate ties between administration and russia then she had another warning for north korea. >> north korea has launched yet another missile. a few weeks ago in an interview you said that we should continue to try the sanctions. at what point do we try something else? at what point do we concede that's not working? >> we're doing that now in terms of getting another resolution together, looking at sanctions and how we'll continue to force it because this is the same movie that keeps playing. >> reporter: all options are on the table? >> all options are on the table. >> reporter: what does that include? >> at

start a fight so don't give us a reason to have one. >> reporter: another issue demanding attention, president trump sharing sensitive classified information from an ally with russian officials. are you going to reassure them that we're capable of handling sensitive information? >> yes, and, you know, i talked with director pompeo on this as well because so much of what i do at the united nations is based on sensitive information, so much of what a lot of the cabinet members, what they do is based on sensitive information so we're trying to reassure all of our counterparts that what they tell us is kept, trusted, and valued and we will return the favor. >> reporter: meanwhile, the president homes on going investigations into ties between his administration and russia does not overshadow his first overseas trip. we need the investigation? >> i think we absolutely need the investigation. >> reporter: trump said the appointment of robert mueller divides this country. you disagree with that assessment? you think it's a good idea? >> i think these questions need

administration can get back to work. >> reporter: but ambassador haley insists her focus is on the worst humanitarian crisis since world war ii -- syria. more than a half million dead, another five million forced to flee. haley started her day in jordan at the syrian border seeing firsthand how aid is getting through, then here, a refugee camp home to 80,000 syrians learning new skills. today you've been talking to a number of families. what have they been telling you? what were you telling them? >> overwhelmingly, every single one, they all just want to go home, that's what their prayer is everyday is that one day syria will be peaceful enough they can go back. >> reporter: haley says what survivors need most is psychological support. she says what people need in syria is for asad to go. >> there is no way there is going to be a political solution and police for people in syria with

>> so you're calling if regime change? are you going to lead the effort? >> you're going to hear me talk about how awful he is every chance i get. >> reporter: right now ambassador hailey is meeting with king abdlaul the second, then she will head with turkey later today. president trump has vowed to cut aide to the united nations, ambassador haley told me yesterday the united states will continue to remain the leader in this world when it comes to humanitarian relief. savannah, willie? >> craig melvin, thank you very much. back here at home, dozens of graduates at the university of notre dame walked out of their commencement ceremony in protest on monday after vice president mike pence began his speech. some people in the crowd booed, others cheered. the vice president made no mention of what was happening. afterwards, some of the students said they were protesting the trump administration's stance on immigration and lgbt rights. in the meane,

mountain top. at least three people died trying to climb mount everest. among them, a doctor from alabama. this morning his family is speaking out and nbc's kelly cobiella has that story. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. such a sad story. there's a record number of climbers on everest this climbing season. that season ends in just nine days and the race to the top has proved deadly for this doctor and dad from alabama. the view from the top of the world, everest at 29,000 feet. for 50-year-old roland yearwood, loving father, doctor and all-around adventurer, it was the ultimate goal and his second try to reach the summit. >> he was extremely prepared for this and he was confident that, you know, he was going to reach the top and come back down and come back home. >> reporter: yearwood was on the mountain in 2015 when a devastating earthquake shook nepal and everest killing 19

>> he wanted to work even har r er to go back up there. >> reporter: on sunday, he made it to the infamous death zone at 27.5 thousand feet, within reach of a nearly vertical section known as the hillary step. the final climb to the top where every breath and every move is a struggle. climbers say the earthquake shook part of the rock face loose. add to that bad weather this year and a record number of climbers. >> a lot of climbers have been waiting at base camp and now there's a window open and when you have traffic jams up in the death zone, that's never good. >> reporter: it's not clear whether yearwood reached the summit or why he didn't make it back. his daughter says he died of altitude sickness, his body still on the mountain. >> he was really honest, really kind and a generous person, i was lucky to have him as a dad. he gets to be in the place that he wanted to accomplish his goal and that's where it's going to be forever.

was able to make it off the mountain. he's due back at base camp today and the family is hoping the mountain guide will shed light on what happened sunday. two other climbers, one from slovakia, one from australia, also died on the mountain on sunday and a third, a climber from india is still missing this morning. savannah, willie? >> as if we needed a reminder it's an incredibly dangerous thing to do. kelly, thank you very much. now to dramatic video of a gas station fire in michigan. >> whoa. oh, my god! oh, my god! >> the building's facade comes crashing down pinning a firefighter underneath it. several firefighters rushed in to pull their fellow firefighter from under the burning metal. he was trapped for about two minutes before being rescued. the firefighter was taken to the hospital where he was treated for burns but thankfully officials say he now is doing well. in other news, the greatest show on earth is no more. the famed ringling brothers and

its big top for good after its 146th year run and one last performance. nbc's kari sanders is on long island with the end of an era. kari, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they say the circus is a town with no zip code. performers and animals traveling from community to community on the circus train. well, this morning it's one last trip home to florida. ironically, since they announced the circus was going to go out of business in january, every show has been sold out and sunday's finale was no exception. >> ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, who's ready for the greatest show on earth? >> reporter: for 146 years, the circus was a constant source of fun and amazement, but no more. among 14,000 who crammed into the nassau coliseum to watch the final performance sunday, former members of the circus and, of course, children like eight-year-old rachel mower. do you know thiss

time it will ever happen. what do you think of that? >> sad. >> reporter: the spell binding acts and the quiet team behind the scenes that kept the circus running all these years are this morning unemployed. upwards of 500 people, including the florida horse team originally from kazakhstan. seven-year-old veronica was born between performances. >> the show is closing. >> my brain understands but my heart cannot take it yet. >> boycott the circus. >> reporter: animal rights activists protested even this last show and played a significant role in the circus' demise. under mounting public pressure, ringling retired its performing elephants last year. with its biggest stars gone, ticket sales dropped dramatically. >> i am sad for the public. >> reporter: 18 years ago, jonathan became ringling's first black announcer. the fabric part of america

stunt, circus management says not happening. it's over. savannah? >> well, it is an end of an era for so many people. kerry thank you. >> how many things in life can you say lasted 150 years almost? it's pretty extraordinary. let's get a check of the weather. sal on the road for us at naval base san diego. al, good morning. >> good morning, i remember my dad taking me to the circus at madison square garden in 1960. i'll never forget it. it's hard to forget being on the deck of an amphibious assault ship. this is the uss "essex." we'll tell you why we're here later but we want to tell you about severe weather hitting the gulf coast. this is the same weather that hit texas yesterday. this is loredo, texas, torrential winds and rain, hail, damaging flooding rains, it was a big deal and you can see the damage the winds did, no word whether this was a tornado or straight line winds but it did a

its way into the central gulf as we look on the radar you can see coming out of texas and into louisiana. we've got flash flood watches and flash flood warnings stretching from texas all the way into atlanta. this is heavy rain going to be making its way through the gulf coast into the southeast and it's rounds of torrential rain. we've got flash flood watches and warnings and a risk of strong floods making their way through the gulf coast. the heaviest area from texas into parts of mississippi. and you can see that heavy rain anywhere, four to six inches in some spots. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

but jurors are being picked in pittsburgh 300 miles from where the trial will be held. they're looking for jurors who haven't been influenced by the publicity in the case. a live report from the courthouse straight ahead. more flooding is expected in parts of the south after record-breaking rain over the weekend. heavy storms slammed texas and montgomery, alabama, was soak bid more than eight inches in just a few hours. now to startling video that will have you talking. a crowd was watching a sea lion from a pier when it grabbed a young girl by her dress and pulled her into the water. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is in vancouver where it happened. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: willie good morning, it happened right here, that little girl who was grabbed by the sea lion hasn't been identified. witnesses say her family ran away without asking for help but not before the scare of a lifetime.

tourists, begins with laughs but suddenly turns to panic and fear. a terrifying close call with a massive sea lion. [ screaming ] that unexpectedly yanks a little girl off the pier in british columbia and pulls her underwater. the girl was rescued by a man who jumped in after her -- both quickly pulled to safety and appeared unhurt. >> i jumped a little bit for sure. i'm a little terrified of that thing now. >> reporter: michael fujiwara captured the attack on his cell phone. >> it's dangerous. it looks cute but you never know how it will act. >> reporter: fujiwara's video shows a sea lion eating a peace of bread someone threw in the water. a man held out his hand as if he was trying to pet the animal. then the sea lion, which can weigh up to 700 pounds, shoots out of the water within inches of the little girl. the crowd laughs nervously but

[ screaming ] the wharf's harbormaster says this should be a warning to never feed or coax sea lions. >> total stupidity on the part of the adults. not only do you let your family members feed a wild animal, then they went and let their little girl sit on the edge of the dock with her back to it. >> reporter: but these tourists didn't get the message, getting another scare in the act same spot. >> oh! >> reporter: sea lions rarely attack humans but similar encounters have been posted online, often involving fish. >> don't go up to a bear in the forest and hand it a ham sandwich. don't come to the dock and throw crackers at a sea lion. common sense. >> reporter: a close call with a powerful creature that could have quickly turned deadly. experts say while sea lions and

pressure so look at the temperatures from buffalo to boston, 15 degrees below average. the jet stream brings cool air to the midwest from chicago to houston where it stays on the warmer side but out west that's where it stays hot. again, the circulating air around that upper high brings temperatures way above average from phoenix to yuma all the way up to medford, oregon, where it will get to 95 degrees today. that's what's going on around the country. here's what's happening in your neck of the woods, maties. >> good morning, you'll want the umbrella to start your day. we have quite a bit of rain moving up through the district now. very wet roads out there, you can see moderate rainfall right near bethesda but the rain will continue over the next few hours. there you see by 11:00 a.m. showers continue this afternoon, just about cloudy skies with a chance for a couple showers. the wet pattern hangs around for tomorrow, wednesday, thursday. good news is we dry out as we go closer to the memorial day weekend.

place. i'm not happy it ended but i'm glad it ended where it is because it ended strong. i like that about shows. they don't push too far but they'll ask the audience to want more but it doesn't go too far. i'm proud of. >> it it would be impossible in just a minute or so here to recap and get people ready who haven't seen the first two seasons but for people who are just dialing in, it's on netflix, what is this show about? how do you describe it to people? >> the show is about a family who is loaded down with a tremendous amount of dark secrets and as the show goes on from the very beginning, these secrets are revealed. one thing you have to know about the show is that the creators of the show, the kessler brothers and daniel zellman, they did "damages" before this and "damages" is a show if you watch it there are a lot of reveals and there's a lot of what they do with the editing that makes it very interesting to watch and it's a

they edit. so i can do a scene in episode one and maybe see part of in the episode four. they mix it up doing the story telling so i never know -- watching the final season, i won't know exactly how it came out. we do different scenes in different ways whether we rehearse them in different ways, we act them out in different ways, we don't know what take they'll use so literally the storylines and story can change and we won't know until we view it. >> you starred -- >> does that make sense to you? >> i'm with you, i'm totally with you. so you've done network shows and you've done this netflix show for three seasons. as an actor, is the streaming experience different other than the fact that it all gets released at one time. >> yeah, yeah. it's a complete different -- having grown up the other way. the first show that my wife and i binged was
