we saw rushing water impacting traffic during evening rush. hail falling fast and furious in hollywood, maryland. down in st. mary's county all of this happening as so many of you were trying to hit the road for the holiday weekend. we will touch on that in just a bit. let's start with the radar. it got a workout. >> it really did. we saw the storms move through. numerous reports of hail. no severe hail. the big thing was the rain and the flooding rain. take a look at the radar. you can see what is going on over the last hours. the big trend is things are drying out. a big line of storms developed. that was turning right around our region getting some parts of our region especially montgomery county, one, two, three inches of rain earlier. now we are not seeing that much. still a

more towards fredrick area. we are about done. this is all part of that bigger storm system that continues to spin around our region and will have an impact on our weather tomorrow. i will talk about the impact tomorrow and the weekend impact coming up. right now i mentioned numerous inches of rain including close to three inches of rain. jackie bensen in the area where we saw that rain turn into major flooding. >> reporter: we want to show you the force of what this water was like. take a look at the flattened grass. it was built up. take a look. you can see the cinder blocks, concrete. this water came up hard, fast and caused a lot of flooding. take a look at georgia avenue. it is closed because there was very high water there earlier today. at one point earlier this eveninn

at the location. two people inside did manage to get out on their own. they had to wade to get away from that vehicle even though montgomery county fire and rescue came in and did have an inflatable raft. a lot of standing water came up very quickly on roads around the area. the freeway swamped during evening rush hour. and, of course, trees coming down. surprised that we didn't see more trees down. there were a few in northwest d.c. and other places because they have leaves on them and normally we see them come over in the rain. a lot of flooding here. they are used to it. we understand a lot of people are pumping out basements tonight. it was quite something during a short period of time that this rain came through. jackie bensen, news 4. >> a live look

crossing our bay bridgeave he right idea but bad weather mostly behind us. the friday rush to the eastern shore not quite here yet. earlier tonight it was a mess. shomari stone caught up with drivers about their holiday get away. >> reporter: it can only get better from here. many of the drivers jumped on the beltway and got to route 50 and just came across a lot of water. it was low visibility. they tell me that the severe thunderstorms dampened the memorial day weekend travel. heavy rain falls on route 50 in annapolis. as these drivers hit the road early for memorial day weekend. what is the weather like out here? >> it is horrible. raining, nasty. >> reporter: crystal smith left thursday night. >> you can barely see. it is just

i just wish i wouldav million people who live in the washington metro area won't stay home. they are expected to take a trip of 50 miles or more to kick off the summer travel season. >> we will wait for the rain to stop to pass the bay bridge. >> reporter: what is fuelling this memorial day weekend travel? according to aaa more people are traveling because they have more money in their pocket and the unemployment rate is falling. some drivers agree. they want to safely make it to the eastern shore. >> you are to slow down because of visibility. >> we will have to be a little storm. if you can stay home stay home. >> reporter: now, some folks say they don't plan on staying home. they will have a great memorial day

meetings held with kushner. officials say that kushner is in a different category from former trump aids paul manafort. in a statement kushner's lawyer says he had previously volunteered to share what he knows with congressional leaders about the meetings and he would do the same again if he is contacted about it. of course, we will be watching. >> we know you will. the president's controversial travel ban is a step closer tonight to the u.s. supreme court. this evening attorney general jeff sessions said that is where this fight is headed. today an appeals court upheld the decision by a federal judge in maryland. that judge ruled the travel ban was unconstitutional and specifically cited the president's comments about banning muslims during the campaign. another

tomorrow, a country whereozens hundreds lined up to sell their blood to a man in southwest washington. police tell us he didn't have a license to operate his make shift blood bank. our cameras were rolling when he left his first court hearing today. he didn't answer our questions and there are many questions surrounding this bizarre story. police say he set up shop in an abandoned apartment and paid people $30 a piece for samples. >> to me it was illegal, unsanitary. >> people were going to go and do it. >> he said he worked for boston bio source. that company says he provided a valuable service collecting blood for research for diseases like cancer and alzheimer's. >>

relative tonht elderly man in pt washington. officers found the man slumped over in his home this morning with signs of trauma to the body. they arrested the relative later in the day on an unrelated warrant. they are now questioning that person about the murder. police have not released the names of the people involved. new at 11 police tell us a man killed yesterday likely knew the man who pulled the trigger. 19-year-old xavier johnson is accused of killing timothy harris. this happened in the middle of the day here before the shooting detectives say johnson and harris got into some kind of argument and it was drug related. johnson is charged with first and second degree murder. army lieutenant richard collins iii will be laid to rest tomorrow. his murder raddled university of maryland and

police say he wasle an unprovoked attack while visiting some friends at maryland this past saturday. the accused killer was a maryland student. investigators are trying to figure out if it was a hate crime. the university of maryland has launched an action plan to deal with hate and bias incidents on campus. next last minute drama in a special election in montana. you have been hearing about it all day. one of the candidates charged with assault. will it stop him from getting elected to congress? news 4's cameras were there as a disabled vietnam veteran walked into his new home. we will have the reaction. and the story so many of you are sharing. the real reason for this holiday weekend. we will take you out to arlington cemetery for the annual flags in.

winds out of the southwest southwest. temperatures around the area mostly in the 50s. 57 in manassas. 60 towards fredricksburg. a nice night and nice start to the day. i think the wind will help with fog. on the radar storm team 4 radar doesn't look like much. let's show you what is happening here. we are seeing showers right along 270 up towards clarksburg. you notice light shower activity here. heavier rain in our fredrick area seeing heavier rain showers along 15 and 70. heads up, these are going to go right over. if you are watching us may get shower activity but that's about it. this is all rotating around the huge area of low pressure. we saw our own little area of low pressure form right on top of us. that is why we had so much rain especially in towards montgomery. watch this spin right here. you can really see it

last few frames up towards portions of philadelphia area. the bigger system itself all spinning around this low. this low has to exit before we can start to clear out. it will move up to north and east tomorrow and will give us a little bit of cloud cover during the day tomorrow. expect to see those clouds. 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. tomorrow clouds around the area. tomorrow afternoon cloud cover. i wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of sprinkles here. we clear out enough we may see sunshine in the afternoon. more sun we get warmer we get. high of 77. peeks of sun. windy. memorial day weekend. saturday is the day i am worried about. a good chance of thunderstorm activity. high temperature of 80 degrees especially late. inviting people over for backyard barbecue might be rainy. 82 on monday for memorial day. next week looking pretty good.
