maybe a little bit of traffic. >> we're going to have a great concert coming up later in the show. let us start with politics. and the overnight results in a closely watched congressional race out in montana. it took an unexpected turn in the final hours. the republican won a seat in the u.s. house a day after he was charged with assaulting a reporter. and during his victory speech, he apologized for his actions. nbc's garrett is in boseman. >> reporter: prior to last night, the only public comment about the alleged assault was a statement issued by his campaign in which they blamed the entire incident on the reporter. but late last night, just minutes after the race was called in his favor, he took a very different tone. >> i'm not proud of what happened. i should not have responded in

and forforgiven. >> reporter: a contrite candidate offering a public apology for the incident that threatened to derail his campaign in the 11th hour. >> i should not have treated that reporter that way. and for that, i'm sorry, mr. ben jacobson. >> reporter: the hotly contested campaign blew up late wednesday when a reporter's question to him about the house health care bill landed the reporter in the hospital and the candidate in political hot water. >> he immediately got very defensive. i tried to follow up one more time, and the next thing i knew i was horizontal. >> i'm sick and tired of you guys. the last guy that came in here did the same thing. >> reporter: the campaign originally offered a different version of the altercation saying it's unfortunate this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scen

him with mi speaker paul ryan said he should apologize, but he would still be welcome at the capital. >> the choice will be made by the people of montana. >> reporter: in the end gianforte supporters rallied behind him. his supporters taking in $100,000 in the day after the incident. the earliest he's sworn in is june 6th. but he has business to take care of here in montana first. he has to appear in court on that assault charge before june 7th. matt and savannah, back to you. >> garrett, thank you. the montana election is a win for the white house. this morning there's turmoil facing the trump administration as nbc news is first to report the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner is now coming under fbi scrutiny in the russia investigation. we'll start our coverage

with peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. jared kushner may be the closest adviser to the president making him one of the most powerful people in the country. and the fbi is taking a closer look at kushner in the russia inquiry. that means this investigation now reaches right next to the president. this morning the fbi's russia probe is expanding into the west wing. >> in america -- >> reporter: jared kushner, son-in-law to president trump, now under fbi scrutiny. multiple u.s. officials say investigators believe kushner has significant information relative to their russia inquiry. he's the only current white house official known to be under scrutiny in the probe. the fbi is investigating whether trump campaign associates coordinated with russia to interfere in the 2016 election. it's unclear precisely what about kushner's activities has drawn the fbi's interest.

kushner met one with a meeting last year with a russian banker. though investigators are taking a closer look at kushner, it does not mean they suspect him of a crime or intended charges. in a statement kushner's attorney tells nbc news, mr. kushner previously volunteered to share with congress what he knows about the meetings. he'll do the same if he's connected in connection with with any other inquiry. his position is adviser and son-in-law. putting the russia probe inside the president's family circle. i spoke to several white house officials overnight. right now the white house is not commenting. instead, redirecting us to the statement from jared kushner's lawyer. to be clear, the u.s. officials say kushner is not a target of the investigation. he's not been accused of wrong doing.

than paul manafort and michael flynn. both men are formally considered subjects of the investigation. all right. peter, thank you. ari is here with us. to your trained legal ear, you hear a subject, target, that has legal meaning. to say under scrutiny, it's a vague term. what does it mean. what doesn't it mean? >> it can be vague. it doesn't mean authorities want to charge this person. it believes they mean this person has significant information about the issues under inquiry. >> he's already volunteered to talk to congress about anything he knows. he'll do the same with the fbi. if you're jared kushner, how does finding out about this change your day today life, and if you're the president, and he is your trusted adviser, how does it impact your daily interactions with him? >> it's not good for the

they've said there's no there there. the president challenging the legitimacy of the inquiry. he has to be careful. his lawyer put out a statement saying they haven't been contacted yet. that was the implication. but day today, he has to think carefully about his role and anything involving russia. >> can the president share any information with him during this period or does he have to be careful? >> well, they are both at least witnesses and maybe more to a whole set of potential activities, whether that includes diplomacy which is legal, or it includes questions around whether current or former aides did anything questionable. i think they have to be careful. they have to keep running the country at the same time. ultimately, this is a white house that's tried to swe dhe rug. this news suggests this story is alive. thank you. as for the president. he's on the final leg of his first overseas trip. it's the g7 summit i

he enters it fresh off tense confrontations with nato meetings with some of the same leaders he's facing today. kristen welker is traveling with the president. good morning. >> reporter: this morning president trump in diplomatic damage control as the g7 summit gets underway, the president is still facing fallout from the nato summit. this morning a magazine reporting the president criticized germany in a meeting lashing out saying the germans are bad, very bad. look at the millions of cars they're selling in the u.s. terrible, according to participants there. this morning president trump standing next to the german leader as the white house weighed in not confirming the language but acknowledging the president voiced his frustration that germany is taking advantage of the u.s. still this morning, the president of the european union commission saying it isn't

let's go a few hours north to orlando where the holiday weekend has a popular destination. dylan at universal studios. all the parks there will be busy this weekend. >> they are. usually i'm the one sitting in traffic. this year i got to come to orlando and talk amusement parks because this is one of the top destinations this memorial day weekend. you've got a lot of the theme parks opening up new attractions, taking advantage of the crowds. universal studios has opened up volcano bay, a 30-acre water theme park. disney world will open up pandora which is a collaboration with james cameron to bring the world of avatar to life. six flags shows their attractions this time of year. how do you beat the crowds? get here early and try to get on some of the rides before the lines get

how do you handle it? >> well, obviously i had to report that to the captain. >> raise your hand if you've been verbally abused by a passenger. really? >> yeah. >> in what way, tim? >> i really think alcohol plays into this a lot. the same alcohol that you're drinking on the ground is very different when the cabin is closed and you're at 8,000 feet. it affects you differently, and most people don't recognize how alcohol does affect them. >> they get drunker? >> they get drunker. >> faster. >> would you guys like to see them stop serving alcohol on flights? >> no. no. i think that's a bit extreme. >> we're trained to assess a situation, and we use specific parameters if someone is appearing to be intoxicated, we may not serve them a full drink. >> what percentage of incidents that occur on a plane do you think have some basis in alcohol consumption? >> i think that's the leading -- >> ab
