leon harris here atwtop are saying the prison sentence for lee boyd maflo could be changed. a federal court has ordered a new sentencing for malvo. he was 17 when he was arrested in 2002. three separate sentences from virginia have already been order order and a similar challenge to his life sentence in maryland is expected to be heard at a hearing next month. we'll keep you posted on that. chopper4 is live over i-66 right now, showing you the traffic, as everyone starts to make that trip out of town for the long weekend. this is 66 in the fair oaks area, around route 50. you can see it's somewhat backed up. yeah, look at that. he just keeps flying and the traffic just keeps on stretching

the national mall. >> reporter: yeah, it's going to be a fun weekend, with lots to do. crews are getting ready to set things up. they've been busy at work for hours, putting together that stage ahead of the annual memorial day concert. 24 hours from now, gates will open and then at 8:00 p.m. is when this rehearsal concert will kick off. it's starting to look more and more like memorial day weekend. this year, the annual concert will feature celebrity hosts like laurence fishburne and joe montagna. there will be live music and tributes to our vets, including a special tribute to gold star families and the tuskegee

you're trying to get to the lot ore police officers in uniform. back to you. >> thanks so much, meagan. two students had to be rushed to the hospital this morning after smelling gas in their school this morning. as firefighters evacuated the building, montgomery county fire officials say the smell wafted into the school after gas was dumped into a drain outside. the two students had minor symptoms. paramedics examined 35 more students and two adults at the scene. it re-opened for classes before noon. a stafford county sheriff's deputy and his fiance are out of jail tonight, charged in the death of a young boy. today a judge granted $5,000 bond to nicholas stoia and heather massey for felony child negl

stoia has been placed on administrative leave. we know more today about a deadly stabbing. james proctor died in his home on mill street in ft. washington. he was 82 years old, and police say he was stabbed to death by his own son. they charged roland proctor with first and second-degree murder. police say there was a dispute before the stabbing, but right now, we don't know what that was about. ariana grande announced she will return to manchester after this week's deadly terror attack. she tweeted saying she wants to honor and raise money for the victims and their families. she said they will be on my mind and in my heart every day. 22 people died, dozens more were injured in the blast monday night. gr

that vote could come as soon i . the kickoff to summer brings an uptick in car, boating, and biking accidents. doctors say they could be prevented with seat belts and proper helmets. and they warn never to swim alone and keep an extra eye on your kids near water. hundreds of dog owners are howling about a proposal that could cut in half the size of a beloved dog park. the south four mile dog park in shirllington is by far the largest in the area. julie carey joins us live with a look at the campaign under way to stop this development plan. >> reporter: this park is so big, it doesn't look that crowded now, but there are dozens of dogs and their

look. these flyers urging dog owners to sign a petition to shave the shirlington dog park. their plea is aimed at the board who will be getting its first look soon at the proposed redevelopment plan. the shirlington dog park is a favorite stop for jamie and her adopted dog wrigley. >> it's unique in that you can walk in, walk out, add it to your walk. it's really nice the length and the size. it never feels too crowded because of all the space that we have. >> reporter: at 100,000 square feet, it's enormously popular. but arlington county is in the plan of creating a master plan for the entire area. a citizens working group

million bikers and tesye the washington national cathedral. >> and news4's chris gordon is er and joins us live. hey, chris. >> reporter: good afternoon. the courtyard here in front of the national cathedral is filled with hundreds of motorcycles that have been ridden here for the blessing of the bikes, with holy water. that's what's going on right now. this is the official start of a weekend of events of rolling thunder. the riders bring their bikes to be blessed. it's just one of the ways the national cathedral pays tribute to veterans and their families. recognizing the challenges they face when they return home. >> that i have a brother that, three tours in nam, he has problems, medical, but he's

shore. as meg memorial day weekend. but you don't need drive very far to find a beautiful place with a nice patch of sand. north beach is only about an hour's drive from d.c. and this charming little bayside town has a lot to offer. sunrise without question is one of the prettiest times to visit north beach. but you don't have to be an early bird to experience this small bay town's charms. >> we have the beach. that is our number one draw. and we have a museum. we have a sculpture garden. we have shops, great restaurants, and a view that you can only find in a bayside town. >> reporter: and what a view it is. and it's only about an hour's drive from d.c. no need to cross the bay bridge.

mandatory life sentences for he of the 17 when he was arrested for the shootings that killed ten people and wounded three in virginia, maryland, and the district. the crime spree caused widespread fear throughout the region. his accomplice, was executed. joining us right now to discuss this case is nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, what's happened here and why has it happened? >> you can see it was a foregone conclusion, because there were two things that happened here after lee boyd malvo was sentenced twice, once in chesapeake county court and the other in spotsylvania. both times he got life without parole. but after he was sentenced, two things happened. first, the supreme court ruled that life without parole sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional, because, especially in mandatory cases, they fail to take account the fact that juveniles are different, their brains are not
