tracking when rain might make its way on in here. we welcome you in on this saturday morning, may 27th. good morning to you, i'm david culver. and i'm angie goff. we are talking about the rain showers, some we could see this morning. >> we are tracking it all. meteorologist tom kierein is joining us now. what about the timing of all of this? >> those storms are likely late this afternoon and maybe a few passing light to moderate showers here over the next couple of hours. right now, the clouds are closing in over washington. live view from the storm team 4 tower camera. they are moving in from the north and west. and the clouds are producing some showers and a little bit of thunder and lightning way out here in west virginia. and just to the north up into howard county and north frederick getting a few sprinkles. but just as the area of some showers coming into the northern shenandoah valley over the next half hour or so. they may make their way into the metro area around 11:00 or so this morning. temperatures will be climbing to near 70 by then.

mid-afternoon. some passing storms will be likely after that into the early evening hours. a look at the new timing in just a few minutes. tom, check in with you then, breaking news in the past half hour we got word that the virginia state police special agent shot last night as died. we have also learned that the suspected gunman was arrested overnight. travis ball was arrested a half mile from richmond in the northern neck. they say a car was parked the wrong way on a street down in richmond. as the officers were talking to the men inside, ball pulled out a gun and opened fire and then took off. we learned that the agent died from his injuries this morning. and a violent night in

them has died. >> derrick ward is joining us live from the scene on what led up to this. derrick, what have you learned? >> reporter: we have heard that seven people were shot here in the 100 block of q street. people heard gunfire up and down the block and thought it might have been fireworks, but there was something about it, the intermittent valleys and then place came here to say something bad happened here. when police arrived, they found eight people were shot, seven were taken away conscious and breathing. but one person was pronounced dead. there's no

this case. and witnesses say a man was yelling at two women, one wearing a hijab. the officers approached the man and they were viciously attacked. one person died on the train and the other died at the hospital. the third person was hurt. police have drugs or alcohol involved. the attack happened on the first day of ramadan. many mosques in the region are on high alert for vandalism during what is supposed to be a highly time. many have increased

measures as this school experienced vandalism last year. >> we just came for a veterans affair for peace and think we should come over hand. >> they have seen five attacks at mosques so far this year. and president trump is in sicily for the final day of the g7 summit. many leaders are gathering for a meeting today along with leersd at the garden of the united states in the paris chain accord. >> the president is expected to

make a decision then. and according to "the washington post," the russian ambassador to the u.n. sergey kislyak told his supporters in december that jared kushner wanted to set up a secret communications channel. the channel would go between the trump transition team and the russian kremlin. kushner and former national security adviser michael flynn met with russia's ambassador back in september. the white house is looking into this report. and it will be a big topic on "meet the press." john kelly and bob corker are going to be joining chuck todd on "meet the press" tomorrow. thunder alley is

we have to remember why we celebrate memorial day,s the not just another day off of work or school. hundreds are paying tribute to the 58,000 servicemen and women who died in the war. i want you to introduce you to this woman and her son who flew all the way from texas. her brother fernando died when his helicopter crashed back in 1917. he was just 19 years old. yesterday the placed his picture right where his name was etched into the grant wall. pay a tribute, this is the connection i have to my uncle i didn't get to know growing up. >> the crowd of

ariana grande concert. manchester police have now arrested a dozen people. 11 people in connection to monday's attack. and yesterday the singer took to social media to denounce plans for a benefit concert. though she said nothing about specific details. pink balloons were released at a memorial for two of the victims, the mother and daughter were killed at the concert. if you have plans to head to the area concert this weekend, you'll see flowers and flags marking grave sites across the country. it is memorial day weekend. but at the historic warrenton county cemetery, you'll see caution tape surrounding nearly 100 tombstones. 93 to be exact. vandals smashing and toppling them last month. police still can't figure out who is behind it. a cemetery specialist from pennsylvania is looking into how much it will cost to make the repairs. in the meantime, the

historical society is collecting funds to help out. and timing is everything on this long holiday weekend. tom kierein is closely tracking the storms tracking through the neighborhood. and it is one of the most popular spots to go for a wide or a bike ride. but it has been closed for months until now. the major upgrade that you can now enjoy when we return.

good morning. after a little sunshine earlier, we had clouds closing in that are producing a little bit of rain. that area of moving color on the storm team 4 radar is showing showers out of the mountains into the panhandle of west virginia over the next half hour or so. so if you have outdoor plans, maybe getting in a bike ride, an outdoor hike or a run, well, just be prepared you might be interrupted by a passing shower here later this morning. and by noontime, it will be over in the low 70s by then. then the mid to late afternoon we'll likely get storms coming through with temperatures in the mid-70s. i have the timing on those storms as well as maybe some more tomorrow. then we'll look at memorial day in a few minutes. and if you're taking tom's advice and headed out early this morning to enjoy the outdoors, for the first time in months now you can use a popular biking and exercise trail in our area. it's one of the most popular if you can believe it. the 18-mile mt. vernon trail just got an

>> reporter: whether you are pedaling or strolling, the 18-mile mt. vernon trail is sporting a new look running from alexandria to thee doodore roost island. this is an upgrade compared to a few months ago. >> there was no alternate to it and very narrow. >> reporter: and bicyclists go just about everywhere with precious cargo on her. did you ever have close calls? >> all the time. i probably had close calls with cars once a week and pedestrians running and people would suddenly make a u-turn or have a dog on a leash that bolted away three times a week. >> reporter: visitors who come in, what can they expect to see different? >> so the main changes are to the mt. vernon trail going through the parking lot. >> reporter: the national park service closed the roosevelt island parking lot working on the changes. today the barriers are coming

coming down, along with it, the cones. this exit ramp will be back open along the gw parkway. the folks at the national park service say this is just in time for memorial day. the uni shall start of summer. >> what better weekend to open the parking lot on theodore roosevelt island. we were trying to get it open in time for memorial day weekend. >> reporter: you now have the paths wider, the turns smoother, the street crossings in a parking lot safer. jillian hopes this is a trend for future park service trail changes. >> they need to have enough room to that they can reduce the conflict between people walking and biking. >> reporter: the park ranger says more will come as they have made upgrades to the island entrance and the statue of roosevelt giving a new shine. >> a lot of cyclists call the wooden bridge the troll hunt. and it's not where the most crashes on the mt. vernon trail happen.

rain to our north and west coming into the panhandle of west virginia, northern shenandoah valley, that's going to be perhaps holding together getting here in to northern virginia over the next half or so from now. we can see that moving from now until noontime. then it will settle down from noon to 3:00 to 4:00. scattered showers are coming through, but then it settles down. this is a brand new round showing not much is going on. on sunday morning, partly sunny. then sunday afternoon, another round of storms develops closer to the metro area between 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. they come on through, and it will be later in the day. at the beaches, it will be chilly with temperatures near 70. maybe an afternoon storm today and maybe a morning shower on monday. out of the mountains, there for us with afternoon storms today and tomorrow with temperatures in the 60s. for monday in the 70s. right now we are hovering in the 60s to near 70 already.

i'm melissa mollet with a look at the memorial day parades and celebrations all over the place saturday, sunday and monday. one is happening all weekend at rockville hometown holidays. we have closures there as i'm hosting the parade on monday at 10:00 a.m. hope to see some of you there. saturday, bowie having the memorial day celebration. sunday, national memorial concert on pbs at the national mall where they shoot that every year. and then on monday, falls church and memorial day celebration on monday. so again, be aware. we'll have closures all over the place for those big celebrations. rolling thunder ride for freedom, sunday here, road closures from 10:30 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. we're talking about areas including the arlington memorial bridge, 12th street tunnel close to northbound traffic and then the ninth street tunnel closed to southbound traffic this weekend because of that. the full list of closures is on th

new bill would cut spending. they would now partner with the states and the private sector. this is already happening from new york's laguardia airport being rebuilt by a swedish company to the pacific parkway in san francisco. >> on the inner loop we are bogged down. >> reporter: states can't afford to rebuild highways, companies are doing the work then collecting the tolls. for the expressway on the stretch of i-495 in virginia, the tolls go up or down based on the level of congestion at the time. and it can quickly get expensive. what is the most you have had to pay on the tolls? >> over $19. >> reporter: for how far? >> five or six mimes. >> reporter: nearby, a private company charges $6.50 for a 14-mile tollway. >> i think it is worth it to not sit in traffic for a little extra money, i'm fine paying the toll. >> reporter: the republicans argue private partnerships keep taxes low but

your time is 9:30. we want to revisit the breaking news, eight virginia state police special agents have died after being shot. state police telling us this morning that agents michael walter was shot and killed by 27-year-old travis ball in richmond last night. according to police, ball ran from the scene and police tracked him down on the northern neck about an hour and a half outside of richmond and they took him into custody. another big story we are following, one person is dead and six others are hurt after a violent night in the district. d.c. police tell us that seven people in total were shot on hugh street in northwest around

shenandoah valley and the panhandle of west virginia. they may hold together and get closer to the metro area in a couple of hours. later today going to the nats game to take on the padres, first pitch, 4:05. by then, thundershowers are coming through with rain delays for the first part of the game. by the end of the game, things will be hovering near 70. a look at the timing and more storms for tomorrow, we'll take a look at that on your memorial day coming up in this half hour. developing this morning, take a look at the pictures from this violent crash overnight in northeast d.c. it happened on new york avenue at north street in front of the hotel. three cars were involved. one of the cars was basically split in half. the other completely gutted. it's still not clear how fast the cars were going when they collided. we know that three people were hurt. one person was rushed to the hospital. and at last check, that individual is in critical

the d.c. sniper victims says he trusts the justice system and hopes it is not putting a man who he considers a monster back on the street. that strong reaction comes in response to the surprise ruling overturning the life sentence of lee malvo, the 17-year-old convict of terrorizing our region back in 2002. here's justice correspondent pete williams now with the federal judge's rationale. >> reporter: the victims were shot at random in parking lots, going to school, mowing the lawn, gripping the washington area in fear in the fall of 2002. during three terrifying week, ten people were killed, three were wounded including a 13-year-old boy. the snipers were john allen mohommad, a mentally disturbed man who planned to kill his ex-wife and wanted it to look like another random victim. he was executed seven years later. the other was lee boyd malvo who

blindly following orders. after two sentences he was twice sentenced to life without parole, but then came a u.s. supreme court decision to declare life without parole sentences for juveniles unconstitutional. just last year, the court said that ruling should apply retroactively to cases on appeal. a federal judge said malvo must get a new sentencing hearing. >> a spokesperson for the virginia attorney general said the office is reviewing the decision and will do everything possible including a possible appeal to make sure that malvo serves life sentences. we reached out and the timetable said there was none. and a family is opening a new community

if you live in the commonwealth of virginia, it looks like you won't be paying the regional sales tax. this is according to our news partner. they say george barker is proposing a plan to allow virginia, maryland and d.c. to pay for the transportation service in its own way. this comes after a metro panel recommended a uniform 1% sales tax. that's where the general manager has asked for $500 million in additional annual funding. disturbing

morning about what the chief mortician at dover airport may have done before john glenn's funeral. the astronaut and american hero was buried in arlington cemetery in april. officials tell nbc news that the investigators were offered a peek at his body before the burial. they declined the offer. and "the washington post" was told he did nothing when he showed him the body. and it is memorial day weekend. we are tracking some showers. it will be one of these days where you need an umbrella close by. we'll check in with tom who is updating the forecast to let us know what to watch out for and when. and a multiple shooting in northwest. one person is dead. we'll have more coming up on news4.

in northwest, derrick ward, news4. well, you'll hear the bikes roaring if you are near the national mall today because of rolling thunder is in full effect. it's happening. >> every time this year we have the big event. several events are kicking off today and tomorrow with the ride for freedom. the ride has been going on for three decades. and we spoke to veterans who explained just how meaningful this weekend is to those who wear the uniform. >> reporter: they have been part of rolling thunder for the past 12 years. the veteran i rode with just retired from the navy last week after 30 years of service. but in a few weeks, he'll be returning to afghanistan. >> this is what i do. i defend freedom. this is the reason i'm on earth. >> reporter: steve and his wife angie say they will come to rolling thunder as long as they can ride.

near the gunston middle school as they may get light rain with showers coming over the next our hour or two. we have another round of showers or storms to pope up after 5:00 p.m., mainly just to our south and to the east of the metro. then the winds shift to the south tomorrow morning with sunshine to add tomorrow morning. then another round of some showers and storms come on through. this is as of 9:00 p.m. sunday evening. that looks like the primetime for stronger storms. we are in the upper 60s to near 70. we'll peak in the upper 70s later this afternoon in the mid to upper 70s and throughout much of the region, except when it rains. then sunday, the upper 70s before any of the storms arrive. then for your memorial day, might have a shower in the morning, otherwise we are dry on memorial day. it will finally feel like su.
