taking action after a noose is found hanging near a museum. the sounds from the memorial day concert, rehearsals filled the night. i'm leon harris. erica is off tonight. we're going to begin with storm team 4. samara, what's the latest right now? has the weather cleared up for everyone? >> right now we're seeing lingering showers. the overall pattern this evening is going to be drying out. most of us under mostly cloudy skies. i know it's a little difficult to make out, we've got false echo returns there, but for the most part we are seeing some lingering showers in southern portions of maryland. just south and west of waldorf, we were seeing showers. those have quickly moved through, though, and now we're drying out. for your morning planner, as we take you through the

capitol and see this wonderful concert. it's all for free. take a look at the beautiful capitol here tonight. many people may have been concerned about the weather, but i can tell you that the skies were clear. it was a bright night for this outdoor concert. it's a night of remembrance dedicated to the men and women in uniform, their families, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice serving their country. ken, a vietnam veteran. >> it's always inspirational. especially the personal stories that they have. it just touches the heart. >> reporter: it's a pbs production in its 28th year. the dress rehearsal, the concert will be broadcast live from the west of the capitol on sunday. eleanor has been here many times before. >> i'm a former foreign service. it's just great to remember why america's so great. and to honor people such as my

>> reporter: the concert features entertainers, singing patriotic music and actors and actresses telling the stories of those who face losses, including a woman whose father died at war when she was a child. >> i love you. and i want you to come home. >> reporter: gold star families who are dealing with the loss of a fallen loved one will also be honored. this couple visiting here from new zealand was touched by the performances. >> i loved it. i really loved the stories. >> very moving. the way in which those who sacrificed their lives for you, and for us really. >> reporter: so again, this was the dress rehearsal tonight. the live broadcast will happen tomorrow night at 8:00. it's free and open to the public. leon, back

>> all the details on the concert, rolling thunder and other big local events all happening this memorial day weekend, including the all-important road closures, all available to you on our nbc washington app. new tonight, a pledge of support as the facility works to find out who it was that hung a noose on the national mall. mur yal bowser said officials will have whatever they need from the city and d.c. police. the noose was first discovered last night at the grounds of the hersh warren museum. it was hanging from a tree there. it's not clear how long the noose had been hanging there. in a tweet, mayor bowser said this in part. quote, it's an unfortunate irony that a sign of intimidation/ignorance were placed on the national mall where people come from all walks of life, to learn who we are, and are inspired to improve

country. someone in alexandria put up fliers with hateful and discriminatory messages on them. take a look here at one. we blurred out some of the objectionable images. residents took these pictures and then took the fliers down. the images are being circulated on social media to send a message that this will not be tolerated. >> i wanted to make sure that the word got out that this is creeping in our inclusive community. so we could stand up against it. >> we denounce hate speech and hate crimes, discrimination in all forms. >> alexandria police are now investigating. in recent weeks, we have reported on a number of racial incidents, and suspected hate crimes in our area. those stories include nooses being found on school campuses and last week's murder at the university of maryland.

police mourning the loss of one of their own. special agent michael walter died today after being shot on the job in richmond. the alleged gunman travis ball is now in custody. the shooting happened during a city/state joint police initiative last night. special agent walter was an 18-year veteran and leaves behind a wife, two sons and a daughter. we want to make sure that virginians know the issues when they hit the polls june the 13th for the primary. tomorrow morning the democratic candidates for governor will be facing off in one last forum. you can watch that, it comes your way at 11:30 right after "meet the press." if you'd like to learn what the candidates are doing if they get elected, go to the nbc washington app and search governor there. julie carey talks to them. she also speaks with former gop chair ed gillespie, state representative frank wagnernd

we're getting a greater understanding of the preparation of the bomb. >> reporter: there are more questions emerging about what british authorities could have done to prevent this attack. there is new information coming out about various people flagging him up to the authorities in recent years. there will be difficult questions asked of prime minister theresa may's government about whether and what more could have been done to potentially prevent this attack from taking place. here in the streets of manchester, more and more people coming out to pay their respects to the # 22 victims of the attack. ariana grande will be returning back to the city to raise funds for the family of the victims. nearly $7 million raised so far for those victims. so the concert is certainly going to be a welcome addition. and a welcome addition to the mood here as well, a somber mood, but not a city that will cave in the face of terror.

expect the temperatures to be in the 60s to start. i think you'll get a good shot at being dry for most of your sunday. it will be in the afternoon you see the showers move in. it will be slightly warmer than we felt today. later on in the afternoon the showers persist. it will be an interesting call around the first pitch for of the nationals versus the padres. temperatures around 77 degrees. a chance for slours pushing through. the good news is, about this rain, it's not going to be a steady rainfall. it will be in and out, very similar to today as we head into the overnight hours, temperatures drop into the 60s for your sunday night as well. i want to take you through on the futurecast. 4:00 p.m., we've got showers, very spotty in nature moving through on and off into sunday evening. we do have the memorial day concert that will be taking place downtown. if you're heading there, i would bring the umbrella just in case. but we should be getting mostly cloudy skies, drying out throughout the
