"news 4 at 11:00" starts now. >> unbelievable. 20 shots fired within blocks of a news 4 crew today, and our cameras captured the arrest afterward. now, all of this was near the same spot where eight people were shot early saturday morning, one of them died. good evening, every one. jackie bensen has new information on these shootings. what have you learned? >> reporter: two shootings, three days. it leaves police and people who live in the truxton circle area very concerned. >> it's disturbing

know, this rash of violence has taken place. >> reporter: residents and visitors enjoying the memorial day holiday found themselves in the middle of a very spread-out crime scene. there was a crashed vehicle, suspect of being a get-away car on florida avenue northwest at north capital street. police used a dog to search for weapons in an empty lock in the 100 block of o street. and there were arrests after more than 20 shots were fired just after 5:00 this evening. no one was struck, but there was great concern caused by the fact it happened so close to the apartment courtyard where eight people were shot saturday morning. algernon jones was fatally injured. >> i don't want to comment on an open investigation with whom side and things, but when anything happens this close by you can draw your own conclusions as to what you think is involved. >> reporter: friends and family of algernon jones lit candles tonight at the spot where saturday's shooting happened. earlier annie

plan accordingly. live here, i'm shomari stone, news 4. thanks for that. now some of the other headlines from this memorial day. it was president trump's first while in office. at arlington, at the arlington national cemetery rather he called on americans to take the most time they can to celebrate the freedom so many died to protect. he singled out the family of his homeland security secretary john kelly for his family's service. kelly as son died in afghanistan in 2010. the president visited his grave today. both secretary kelly and his son served in the marine corps. here in the district thousands lined constitution avenue to watch the national memorial day parade. ken burns served as one of the grand marshalls for this year's parade. his upcoming film about the vietnam war comes out this fall. three new names are etched in history at the vietnam veteran's memorial. these addition bring the total number of names on that wall t

do. he says he was not drunk when he was arrested for dui in florida today. woods released a statement saying in part, what happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed immediate cage. i didn't realize the mix of medications affected me so strongly ". he had a fourth back surgery in april. his statement, he did take responsibility for his actions and apologized to his family and friends and says he will do everything he can to ensure it doesn't happen again. woods was arrested around 3:00 this morning in jupiter, florida where he has a home. he was released by 11:00 a.m. two people are behind bars tonight for beating and stabbing death of a man in a hotel parking lot in silver spring. 20-year-old ruben ortiz and 19 year old cox face first degree murder and armed robbery charges. police say the victim, 24-year-o24

sulaimanjalloh was robbed after he met to buy marijuana. to include more people convicted of misdemeanors. supporters say it will solve more crimes but opponents including the aclu are raising privacy concerns. the parents of hannah graham support this expansion. graham, as you may remember, was abducted and killed in 2014. his killer had misdemeanors on his record but no felonies and the family says if matthew's dna was taken after a misdemeanor charge he would have been connected to a 2005 rape in fairfax and their daughter still would be alive. the mayor of portland, oregon says his community is in shock and mourning after a man killed two people after confronting him for hurling racial slurs at two muslim women on a train. the mayor asked that an upcoming trump free speech

cancelled. >> they're coming to peddle a message of hatred and bigotry. i'm reminded constantly they have a first amendment right to speak, but my push-back on that is that hate speech is not protected. >> the mayor says that the city will not issue permits for the alt-right event scheduled for next week. he is asking federal officials to revoke permits for any anti-muslim protest planned for next month. tense moments in texas today. hundreds of demonstrators gathered to protest the state's new anti-sanctuary cities law. during the protest at the state capital, two lawmakers got into it. the scrum happened after a republican who supports the law announced that he had called ice agents to come and detain some of the protesters. that started a shouting match with a decks as democrat and the two then had to be separated. the new law requires local law enforcement to follow all federal immigration laws and imposes criminal pen a little fo

♪ till victory is won president john f. kennedy remembered here in washington tonight on what would have been his 100th birthday. the kennedy center opera house hosted special readings of kennedy's speeches, musical performances and showed some old video footage of the 35th president. j.f.k. was born on this day in 1917 in brookline, massachusetts and the kennedy center wasn't the only place celebrating his legacy today. a special wreath stood at his grave site next to the eternal flame at arlington national cemetery. the u.s. postal service unveiled a forever stamp featuring the president. and in boston the j.f.k. presidential library and museum marked the occasion with the opening of a new exhibit featuring 100 original artifacts from kennedy's life. the event included a fly over from the u.s. navy. president kenn

navy during world war ii. this has been a wild and dangerous year on the road for maryland state troopers in our area. news 4 review found a spike in the number of troopers hurt on the job on busy local highways. our scott mcfarland spoke with one who survived a crash on his first day on the job. >> reporter: it was adam thatcher's first day on the job, working out of maryland state police's waterloo barracks in jess up patrolling 95. >> it was a crazy day being by myself, not knowing exactly how to handle every situation. >> reporter: inside his cruiser making one of his first traffic stops near route 32 he heard the chaos. >> it is louder than you expect. you hear the brakes first and then you hear -- when you hear the screech you know something is about to happen. >> reporter: a seven-car pileup. driver distraction suspended. he wrenched his back but he managed to return to his job. the crashes and the injuries are far worse for a rising number of his colleagues. state police records

news 4 show a spike in drivers crashing into maryland troopers along state highways. we found at least 38 troopers hit last year in addition to 20 more accidents in which drivers smashed into unoccupied police cruisers. in this crash in october near college park the collision trapped a trooper inside his cruiser. near route 5 in november drunk driving was the suspended culprit. elena rousseau with maryland state troopers say they're told to prepare for increasingly distracted drivers, some of which news 4 saw even with our cameras positioned inside marked police car os the highway. >> troopers are trained in the academy from the start how to stay as safe as possible on any scene, whether it is a traffic stop, whether it is a crash, whether it is a homicide investigation. this just adds another layer that they have to be -- pay attention to. >> reporter: throughout our area there are move-over laws requiring drivers

le lane when they see police on the shoulders. we checked and found at least 3400 tickets written for violation of the move-over law since 2014 and that's in montgomery county along. along i-270, scott mcfarland, news 4. all of the extra drivers on the road for summer travel and experts say most of us will be sticking to trips short and close to home. travelers say security concerns are one of the things stopping them from taking trips overseas this morning. in a survey by travel zoom, they're saying they would keep most of the trips within driving distance of home, and that should also keep the costs down because gasoline prices are only expected to rise about a quarter per gallon this summer. of course, it would be nice to have some sun to drive in as opposed to the rain we've had the last few days. today not too bad. >> the month, the month of may extremely wet. you know, over five inches of rain at the airport, some areas over seven inches of rain. looks like back to some shower activity over the next coupleful days, maybe a rumble of thunder or two tomorrow. not bad right now.

notice the clouds. notice the orange hue from the clouds, that tells you low clouds across the area. they continue to move on in here and will continue to do so as we make our way through the night. current temperatures tat afrpt sitting at 72 degrees right now. i'm having a problem with my clicker so let me check out this as i walk through this and figure out exactly what's going on here because i'm having a little bit of an issue. i know what the problem is. now it will work. boom, there we go right now. perfect. temperatures at 71 degrees right now at the airport. as we move on through, we're going to continue to see those clouds, continue to see those nice temperatures, too. nice and mild, 64 in martins burg, 67 in manassas, 68 at the huntington area. it is on the mild side and will continue to be through tomorrow morning. no rain. that could change by early tomorrow morning. not expecting much, but we could see shower activity because of a system trying to make its way our way. big storm to the north. you can see the spin here and we have a trailing cold front and some moisture

area overnight tonight and in towards tomorrow morning. starting off tomorrow morning around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m., notice some shower activity around the region, and this could last right on through the morning rush. don't be surprised to see some wet roadways but, again, i'm not anticipating a whole lot of rain. you may need to take the umbrella out just in case but you may not need it that much. take a look at this. by 1:00, again, a couple of showers mostly to the west. a front will come through as i mentioned and that front could spawn some showers and possible thunderstorms. some of those storms could be on the strong side. i'm not anticipating anything severe but a quick downpour or two, thunder and lightning during the afternoon tomorrow. at bus bus stop tomorrow don't be surprised by a couple of showers. temperatures around 66, won't need the coats, jackets. a few storms by 4:00. it will be a pretty nice afternoon but i do expect to see a lot of cloud cover. those storms will be scattered as we move into the day on wednesday, more of the same. high around 82 degree also. ab
