i'm molette green. a home break-in turns into a massive police operation here in clinton with the suspect running away into a wooded area. the story coming up. there is another shakeup at the white house. >> the latest staffer to leave their position. and we're taking a look at some of that rain out there. we've got more thunderstorms on the way this afternoon but when can we have the details? that's coming up. we begin with breaking news this midday. a man is now in custody in clinton, maryland.

inside a house which then caught on fire. molette green has the latest. molette? >> reporter: yes. at any minute, we expect an update on the suspect. we just got his name moments ago. just before 10:30 this morning, police told us they caught this guy. his last name is gardener. we're still working to get his first name here. this man who was armed and ran off into a wooded area on surratts road had police scrambling to find him. this happened near grant avenue. we are in the parking lot of the colony south hotel near maryland's hta

can tell you that the shelter in place order ended right after this man's capture. he was armed when he broke into a house. police say he broke into a house here and then there was a fire that happened at that house shortly after. there was a barricade situation. again, the chief now at the podium to bring us up to date on this situation. >> at approximately 7:50 this morning, alert neighbors, and i want to thank them, telephoned 911 saying that a neighbor's house was being broken into by a gentleman and they provided us with a very good description. his name is wayne kindle gardener, a 33-year-old male and resides in the clinton area. mr. gardener was observed breaking into the home. our officers were en route and within a few minutes arrived on scene. at that point, independent witnesses

things from the home. he went back into that home and at this point officers moved to the perimeter of the house and he fled into the woodline armed with a shotgun. at this point, our officers pursued him towards the woodline and then found a place of cover and held position because at this point we have an armed individual and he's not in line of sight. very quickly, additional units responded, created a perimeter encompassing several square miles all the way out to 301 cognizant of the concerns of this hospital, kog acognizant o residents still in their homes. the fire department was hampered in their initial efforts and i'll let steve talk about that, because we didn't have eyes on the suspect immediately. they did their best to mitigate the fire and then pulled back.

our ems teams went in there and extinguished the fire. along the track we had k-9 assistance and we found mr. garth n gardener hiding in the wood line. he's unharmed. he has an extensive criminal record. at the end of this process, we have lifted the shelter in place order. we knew we had a tight perimeter but we weren't entirely sure where the suspect was. we have recovered the weapon. at this point, i'll turn it over to the chief of the fire department to speak about their efforts. >> thank you so much. as the chief said, when the fire department arrived, we found fire from the rear of the home. we were given information that we had a suspect in the wood line. well that information, we made a decision to make a quick initial

but then until the person was apprehended, we evacuated the building. there was further support and then at that time the fire continued to smoulder. it did light back up and crews went back inside and mopped it up. the fire was very small in nature. it was in one of the bedrooms, and it was contained to the bedroom with a little bit of smoke out into the hallway. >> questions? >> [ inaudible ]. >> it appears, yes, that he set the fire. >> we have one resident, we're not going to share his name, but he is safe and we contacted him. he was very helpful to us in terms of what may be in the house and, frankly, that weapon that he secured was the victim's weapon but we now have that as well so that's no longer out

victim's home. he had is secured in a proper fashion but the suspect had gotten access to it while he was removing items. he had been in the house, removed some items and then went back in so he had some time before the neighbors alerted us. the suspect has a criminal history. he probably frequents the area. he lives in clinton. all of those other questions will be part of the ongoing investigation which is just beginning. >> back here live here, the police chief is still briefing us on wayne gardener, the suspect in

break-in. the police telling us that the suspect ran into a wooded area. when officers arrived, they were able to capture him and recover a shotgun used in the break-in of this home. now, also the chief and fire chief telling us that the suspect set the home on fire but it was a small fire and they were able to put it out. the fire was in one of the bedrooms of this home. we're working to get video of this house. all of this area was shut off as police searched the home. wayne gardener of clinton, maryland, was captured just before 10:30 a.m. our prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins is

continue to update us later today on news4 and we'll have updates on our nbc washington app. this situation has resolved itself with the suspect now in police custody. we'll learn more about the exact charges in the coming hours. back to you guys. >> molette, thank you. developing this morning, take a good look at this little girl's picture on the screen here. the national center for missing and exploited children say that police need your help finding her parents. they don't know her name but she was dropped off at holy cross hospital on sunday in silver spring. she is either 2 or 3 years old. she has black hair and brown eyes. she had visible injuries to the lower half of her body when she was brought to the hospital. another story that we've been following all morning, problems for metro red line riders seem to be over right now. news4's justin finch explaining how the hiccup frustrated passengers. >> reporter: close to 7:00

morning came news that red line was restored but shuttles were still carrying loads. this impacted service and riders are being advised to take the green line instead but at the start of the day when word that these closures came out, there was a lot of frustration. crowds waiting for the first of the shuttle buses to arrive. riders say that close to 5:15 they got word of the service being shut down and they were told to wait for the buses. they say they waited for more than 45 minutes until the first shuttle bus arrived. frustrations, no doubt, were high as a result. >> i'm late to work. i'm supposed to be to work at 6:00. they told us 30 minutes ago that the shuttle bus was coming. >> i just got off the bus and they said we can't get on the train. i've got to be to work at 6:30. my bus was

i just paid for something that i -- i just gave them money and i can't even use the train. >> reporter: and again, close to 7:00 this morning, the shuttle buses were still arriving. however, metro said that service had been restored but to expect delays that should not sprinkle into the back end of the day but certainly impacted the morning commute. back to you. a 19-year-old woman was just sentenced for a brutal gang murder in gaithersburg. vanessa alvarado will spend most of her life in prison for stabbing a man 40 times a year ago. vanessa lured him into malcolm king park promising sex. three ms-13 gang members attacked him. on a phone call from jail, alvarado told her boyfriend that it was a hit. a judge sentenced her to life in prison suspending all

it went up in flames after that. the people who own it say they were there at the time. no one was hurt, no animals hurt. the public area is still in tact. it's not clear how much damage was caused or what is gone for good. this morning, a scary reminder to look before you take that selfie. search and rescue crews now looking for a man who fell off this cliff at a washington state park. investigators think the fall happened because he was taking a picture. >> boyfriend and girlfriend on a hike. my understanding is they were going to take a selfie and he slipped and fell in, went down the cliff, about a 35-foot embankment. >> officials now believe that this is a recovery operation for that 25-year-old man. a 4-year-old girl lucky to be swimming close to an off-duty deputy this weekend. and that's because he saved the young girl's life.

his weekend in panama beach, florida. all of a sudden a little girl was pulled out of the pool and he performed cpr, he felt a pulse and she started to cry. >> i could be planning a funeral right now for my baby but i'm not because of him. >> i thank jesus christ for performing the miracle on that baby girl. >> there is a picture of the officer and the little girl. last check, she's now in good condition. new cases crop up every day, criminals stealing debit card information at the atm and you don't even know it is happening. one thief with one skimmer can drain hundreds of bank accounts. jeff rossen tells us how to spot a skimmer. >> reporter: watch as this man walks up to an atm in california. police say he's pulling out a

onto the machine. cops are looking for him. just days ago, police in new hampshire finding this small skimmer on an atm there. across the country, suspects still on the loose from new york to massachusetts, targeting customers just like you and these little skimmers can be heart to spot. it's a small electronic device placed right over the card reader. it looks like it's part of the machine, nearly impossible to see. but as you're withdrawing cash, it's really recording your debit card information for the crook. so how can you tell if your atm is being skimmed? we've set up a little experiment here with west com credit union and the maker of this atm. come on in, take a look around this atm. this is what you find at a grocery store, a restaurant. i don't see anything different here. but

well, this morning, families are checking out massive damage from a possible tornado. take a look at this footage we got. this is in sampson, north carolina. it blew through at least a dozen homes. it's a big mess. 14 people were hurt. schools in the area also had to start class late today. some of them didn't even open. for us, it's umbrella weather that continues throughout the area. >> i mean, when is it not umbrella weather, right? >> yeah. but we had the unsettled with the they are pattern through the holiday weekend and it's carried on to the workweek. >> we're going to get a couple days of sunshine, so that's good. but it's going to be towards the end of the week. we're dealing with the fog out there now that hasn't lifted since early this morning.

sanders has a copy of it in hand and has the very latest. >> reporter: tiger woods says that he was not consuming any alcohol when he was arrested for dui here in jupiter, florida. we now have the dui probable cause affidavit. while tiger woods says he was using prescription drugs, we have details that suggest that he was, indeed, not taking any alcohol. first, let's start at the beginning of the probable cause affidavit that says that the officer came upon him in his vehicle and that tiger woods had his seat belt on and was seated in the driver's seat. it should be noted that woods was asleep at the wheel and had to be woken up. at the end of the report, it talks about the breath test result where it's .000. tiger woods says that he had no alcohol in his system and the breath test suggests and proves that he's ra

welcome back. boat sales are on the rise and that might not surprise you if you saw more crowded waterways over the memorial day weekend. landon dowdy has more on the boating boom. >> reporter: there could be more people heading out on the water now that boat sales are at the highest level since the recession. and for dealers, the pickup in

busy. >> sales are up around 30% from last year. you have a change in office, the stock market at an all-time high, you've got good job reports. >> reporter: sales of power boats are expected to rise this year and next year. however, high-end manufacturers are counting on mega yachts like this for that growth. >> it's a little soft. we've seen it in the industry data over the last three to four quarters. >> reporter: it's being attributed to a stronger dollar and concern that washington won't be able to pass the tax cuts that they are expecting. boat manufacturers are facing another challenge. not enough workers. bost boston whalers manufacturing plant in florida, boats are made by hand and can take up to four months to complete. there is a lack of skilled workers. and while industry experts don't expect sales to get back to

optimistic that the industry will stay afloat. >> i look at the portfolio and there is a strong demand for 20 to 25 feet. well, we have a few rain showers out there right now coming through baltimore and through southern maryland. a few are getting their way in through the shenandoah valley. winchester, temperatures already into the mid-70s while a lot of us are stuck into the 60s. so we'll go 75 today because i believe we can get a little sunshine on the eastern side. keep your fingers crossed. scattered rain chances and we'll continue to see that throughout the remainder of the day. for tomorrow, temperatures in the 80s. >> okay, lauryn, this makes the weather better. >> this
