abandoned at a local hospital with injuries to the lower half of her body. we have new details on who dropped her off. sluggish, sleepy, with extremely slow and slurred speech, that's how police described tiger woods after they had to wake him up behind the wheel of his mercedes. and a growing cam scam is targeting home buyers. but we begin in the storm center with chief meteorologist doug kammerer. >> doug, when exactly can we expect to start seeing the rain? >> it's going to be over the next couple of hours. but notice we're still in blue, not in red mode. we don't have any severe storms around our region. i'm tracking more so the cloud cover around our area. the clouds help to keep a cap on the atmosphere. but we are looking at sun back to the west and that's whether we have the storms, shenandoah valley, page

county. a good storm around luray. notice there was lightning with these. as they have come across the blue ridge, they have all died. i am tracking a line of very strong storms, even severe thunderstorm watches in through pennsylvania, new york, that line extends all the way down into tennessee. but again, we need to see the warmer weather move in. look at the numbers. we're in the 80s just down to the south. it's 82 in luray right now. a cooler air mass over d.c. we need that to break to get some severe thunderstorms. i'll let you know when we have the best chance to see some storms in a moment, but you can watch the radar anytime. i recommend you do so when you step out the front door, you know exactly what's coming your way. >> thanks, doug. we know much more about the

a wild scene that played out in a prince george's county neighborhood. >> at 11:00, we told you a man had just been arrested for breaking into someone's home and setting it on fire. since then, we've learned his name is wayne gardinner. investigators piecing together the evidence. >> tracee wilkins is live right now with the new information. tracee? >> reporter: pat, the actual incident hand on sir ats road, but the perimeter was to 301. there was an order for people who live in the area to shelter in place. but their suspect is in custody. we are learning more about him and what happened here. 33-year-old wayne gardiner broke into this home, set it on fire and then fled from police with a rifle in hand. this is a picture released by the prince george's county police of the shotgun found in

arrested. he randomly chose to break into the house. a neighbor reportedly saw him taking items out of the house and called police. when they arrived on the scene, gardiner is accused of setting the house on fire and running away in the woods with a rifle that he stole from inside of the home. this resulted in a two-hour stand-off with police. the man who owns this home that was broken into and set on fire spoke exclusively with news4. >> it's just a random act. this is something i don't recognize, i have no idea who this guy is, never seen him before. i went to work this morning and got a phone call 45 minutes after i got there. this is where we're at. >> reporter: unbelievable. mr. crabtree told me that he had just renovated the inside of his home. it looks like he's going to have to start from scratch. reporting

tracee wilkins, news4. we also have new developments in a story we've been following all day. montgomery county police have identified the 2-year-old girl someone dropped off at holy cross hospital. right now, they're trying to determine guardianship of the child. the national center for missing and exploited children posted this photo on its website. the group also said the girl had visible injuries on the lower half of her body. the police would only confirm that she is receiving medical treatment. we're also learning more about the woman who dropped her off at holy cross yesterday. we'll have a lot more on that coming up in a report in the next half hour. right now, some neighbors in d.c. are taking action after several shootings in the last few days. at least 20 shots were fired in the truckston circle neighborhood off north capital street yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt and our cameras captured the arrest of two people after it all happened. it happened in the same area where eight people

early saturday morning. one of those people was killed. right now, folks in the neighborhood are taking to the streets for a crime walk. shomari stone is live in northwest with a look at what they're hoping to accomplish today. shomari? >> reporter: right now, you can see police chief peter newsham behind me, he's talking to people in the community, hearing their concerns. you have two shootings in three days in q street and first street northwest. people are starting this crime awareness walk, to bring attention to the gun violence in this neighborhood. the shooting happened in the same area where a man was killed on saturday morning. there have been no arrested in that case. but of course yesterday police arrested two people after more than 20 shots were fired near q street northwest and first street northwest. people who live in the community tell me they often hear gun shots, they are tired of it. they are pleased that police chief newsham is out here talking to the community and also that the anc

months on the job. the president has accepted the resignation but his official last day hasn't been set yet. today we learned congress wants more information from trump's personal attorney. the house and senate intelligence committee are investigating the campaign's possible ties to russia, they want to hear more from michael cohen. it's similar to the request sent to michael flynn and other aides. cohen said he will not cooperate with the house and senate requests. good news for people who support the purple line. today a judge ruled the line will not violate federal protections of endangered species. the same judge last week required maryland to re-examine how many people will use the system. maryland is expected to appeal that ruling. court documents show tiger woods was asleep at the wheel when police stopped him for dui. woods was pulled over monday with the ignition on and described him as extremely

doug and i are closely watching the sky, looking off to the south of washington and toward the west. there's some clearing on the horizon. there's tyson's corner, but there's the low cloud cover right over the metro area. live view from the storm team4 tower camera. radar showing a cluster of some developing showers, maybe a little bit of thunder and lightning. central and southern shenandoah valley but most of this is staying south of 66 as we get into the later part of the afternoon, i'll be watching this line of showers and thunder showers. they might turn into stronger storms over the next hour or so. so it's important to stay tuned and stay with us. shenandoah valley near 80. only in the 80s in the metro area. hour by hour temperatures, peaking near 70 locally, back to the 60s by later this evening. we'll have another update on possible storms in just a few minutes. red line riders are hoping for a smoother evening commute after a

metro had to perform emergency track work so riders were forced to wait up to an hour for shuttle buses. service was restored, but delays continued well into the middle of the day. everything should be back to normal for the evening rush. a virginia state police special agent was killed in the line of duty and now we've learned about his ties to d.c. michael walter was an 18-year veteran, and he actually started his career with the capital police. someone shot walter during a traffic stop on friday. and officers were able to track down the suspect who is now charged with murder. walter will be remembered on saturday in a public funeral. he leaves behind a wife, two sons, and a daughter. the russia investigation is front and center once again today for the white house, this amid news that a trump official has resigned after only three months on the job. and a pretty important safety art

forecasty relationsh frosty relationship with europe. french prt macron said he doesn't see clear with president trump. macron also criticized russian media outlets during a joint news conference with vladimir putin yesterday. the french president has joined angela merkel in giving president trump the cold shoulder. some folks are claiming the trump presidency has been a boon to businesses that deal in stress relief. yoga, meditation coaches say they're seeing increased enrollment and fewer dropouts since the inauguration. the american psychological association reports that 26% of workers feel stressed out by political discussions at work, which is actually up from last september. the apa also found that stress nationwide is on the rise for the first time in ten years. developing in manchester, england, right now, police are asking the public to take a good look at this picture. they say this is sn

with a blue suitcase, just hours before the concert bombing. right now, police are trying to figure out about his movements with that suitcase in the days before the bombing happened. they are hoping to piece together where he got materials for the bomb and where he put it together. police are also combing through thousands of hours of cctv footage and searching 21 locations to try to find clues. we now know more about the benefit show ariana grande is performing in manchester. grande will welcome a host of other stars to the stage, including justin bieber, coldplay, and miley cyrus. all the charities will go to a manchester charity. well, it's been on the cool side after the holiday weekend. >> doug is checking some storms moving in. >> tracking storms to the west, but we need to get out of ts

where yesterday we predicted temperatures would be in the 70s but because of that easterly flow, we get this, this time of year, very hard to predict, thought it would be up to baltimore, but it made its way to d.c. and temperatures have not responded. only 69 degrees with all the cloud cover. the evening planner here, i put in different numbers a while ago. temperatures only in the 60s. 68 in huntingtown, but notice where we have seen the sun, these are the numbers we predicted today. 77 fredericksburg, 83 in charlottesville. it's right in here that we have the cooler air and the clouds continuing and those clouds have kept things stable over much of northern virginia and maryland. we are watching these storms back to the west and these are pretty strong storms coming through luray. in towards

eventually stay to the south. there is sunshine in this area. the wider picture shows it well. look at the low clouds. they're trying to get out of here. until they do, we're going to stay on the stable side. but once we get some sunshine, we think we could get storms. look at the line of storms from new york all the way through pennsylvania. not just through pennsylvania, all the way down towards tennessee, that's the line. so once again, if we get a little bit in the way of sunshine, we could pull some of these thunderstorms in and see a couple of strong ones in here. that's what our future weather model says. here's the storms to the south, we've seen some to the north as well. by 7:00, couple of storms, from d.c. southward, the best chances for storms. they move through overnight. by 11:00, still showers to the south. clouds return for early tomorrow morning, but the clouds get out of here and we see a pretty nice afternoon. most of tomorrow looking quite nice, but there's going to be a chance of

tomorrow afternoon. not many, but a few. any storms tomorrow could be on the strong side once again. today's storms, well, low tornado risk, winds would be a big impact. but we're not going too high with anything. it's the rainfall that would come during the evening rush, so bust-out forecast tomorrow, 65 degrees, nice weather at 7:00 a.m. noon, around 74, and a few storms. most areas dry, but keep the umbrella handy just in case. high of 82 tomorrow. notice, we're on the mild side here. average high is now close to 80. 82 tomorrow, 79 thursday, 82 on friday. thursday and friday really looking quite nice here. saturday a chance of a shower, but most of the day dry, high of 82. 79 on sunday. sunday we'll see clouds and shower activity. not a wash-out, but most of next week looking pretty good. couple of cool days and

but other questions remain. kristin wright has more on the search for her parents. >> reporter: right now, a 2-year-old girl is being treated here at holy cross hospital in montgomery county while police try to figure out who was supposed to be taking care of her. a lot of questions about this toddler and her well-being. police say a woman brought the little girl to the hospital on sunday and, follow me here, police say the woman told the hospital workers, she didn't know who the girl was, or who her parents were. police say the woman's sister gave her the child to watch, but then the woman could not get in touch with her sister. so she brought the 2-year-old to the hospital. so, yes, a lot of questions still. this is what we're told is happening now. >> the detectives will, again, confirm guardianship, also investigate the circumstances, how this child came to be at this woman's home and

of and has proper care. >> reporter: earlier in the day the national center for missing and sploitded children said the girl was injured when she was brought to the hospital. the police will only say she's receiving treatment. what else we know about this bizarre and sad case, today on news4 at 5:00 and 6:00. kristin wright, news4. >> sad, certainly says it all. firefighters were battling two fires on one scene in gaithersburg. a trash truck full of compacted cardboard caught fire and crews had to use large saws to cut the truck open to allow them access to the fire and put it out. but then a police car on the scene caught fire. it's not clear how either fire sta started. someone left two so-called draino bombs along a park trail

drain cleanser, and aluminum foil. this homemade mixture can create an explosion. they were found may 16th in little seneca green way stream valley park. if you see any suspicious devices like these, you should stay away and contact police. a program that helps small business owners east of the anacostia is expanding and will be able to help more entrepreneurs in d.c. it's called project 500. one business owner plans to manufacture a portable solar charging device in anacostia and he told us how the program connected his company to the resources it needs to succeed. >> you can't go it alone. you need to leverage the experience of people who know how to bring partners to the table. i would encourage any small business, in fact, i would encourage any business that wants to grow and take their business to the next level and make a difference, they should go through project 500. >> the

today they announced a partnership with georgetown university that will allow project 500 to expand to small business owners beyond those located east of the river. the arrest of tiger woods is putting a spotlight on the issue of drugged driving. it's something our local police departments say they're seeing more and more often. this video shows a special dwi squad that's been deployed in fairfax county for about a year now. these officers work the night shift and they dedicate all of their time to stopping impaired drivers. >> they're looking for all the signs of impairment, whether it's from alcohol or drugs, and they're looking to get those dangerous drivers off the street. we're seeing more and more of the drugged drivers than we have in the past. difficult to say if that's because we're looking for it more than we have in the past, but it does seem to be something that is on the increase. >> in our next hour, we'll tell you why this

now getting new training to better help it and help the members identify and arrest drugged drivers. the stafford county sheriff's office has arrested a woman for starting a fire that killed her husband. deputies arrested lisa vart ash on may 26th and say she intentionally set fire to her home on devon shir lane. her husband died in the blaze and the sheriff's office said it will be filing additional charges against her. hundreds of dog owners are expected to be in arlington this evening at a meeting of the arlington county board. they are anxious to hear what lawmakers are saying about a redevelopment plan that could cut the size of a beloved dog park in half. the shirlington dog park is two and a half acres, the largest park in the area, with a fenced area and access to a stream where dogs can play. but the county is considering plans to revamp four mile run and reduce the size of the

north, a chance for those coming into our area the next couple of hours something we'll watch, even into the day tomorrow. we'll update you on where the storms are, where they go next and what to expect for the next few days. we have something you're gonna like in the forecast. >> looking forward to it, doug. for the second time in many weeks, residents in the southeastern part of north carolina are on storm clean-up duty. the national weather service is evaluating the damage to determine if it was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. people are removing trees from roadways and lifting branches off cars and homes while others waited for their power to be turned back on. at least 12 people were hurt in the storm last night. >> here's a question. do you have any idea how much it costs to visit a hospital emergency room. well, turns out, a lot of er doctors, they don't know either. researchers at a

doctors. they were asked to estimate the cost for different emergency scenarios, like treating patients for sore throats or abdominal pain. they were given a range of costs to choose from, and only 38% of doctors were able to estimate the costs correctly. experts say understanding the financial implications may help doctors identify less expensive but equally effective treatment options. the 90th scripps national spelling bee is officially under way, and it's tougher and bigger than ever before. this year, there's a record 291 spellers taking part from age 6 to 15. yes, age, 6. today they take the written test. the test will determine who will advance past the preliminary rounds and eight spellers from our area will get their shot. the words are tougher this year, in an attempt to avoid a

4 things to know this afternoon, a stand-off in prince george's county is over. wayne gardiner is under arrest. he's accused of breaking into a home on surratts road in clinton this morning, stealing a shotgun, setting the house on fire, and then hiding in the woods. police have identified an injured 2-year-old girl who was dropped off at a maryland hospital, but they're still working to confirm guardianship of the child. a woman took her to holy cross yesterday, believing the child needed medical care. that woman told the hospital staff she did not know who the girl was. families who live in d.c.'s truckston circle neighborhood are holding a crime walk after several shootings over the past few days. eight people were shot, one of them died on saturday alone. chief peter newsham took part in today's walk. we're tracking storms moving into o

radar. storm team4 has the timing coming up. and doug and tom are in the storm center right now. how's it looking out there now? >> still tracking storms to the south and west, but once again, the clouds and what we call cold air damming, when the cold air comes off the ocean. >> we see it in the wintertime, and but sometimes in the spring. and the cold air damming stalls out over our region. that's what is happening today. there's a view of our storm team4 tower camera. it is showing some clearing way off in the distance. that's tyson's corner on the horizon. >> way off in the distance. the temperatures you can see the difference here. we've shot up here. 75 in centreville, only 64 in potomac, where the clouds are, trying to work their way in. back to the west, 80 towards ferriville. 78 around winchester.

a much less of a chance for storms later on this evening. if you have sunshine right now, that means most of you in northern virginia, you have a good chance of storms and we're seeing them now. look at the storm west of warrenton, really pulsing up, lot of lightning. coming towards rappahannock, fauquier, west of marshall. fauquier, you're getting the brunt of this storm. r rappahannock and northern culpeper county. south of fair fox, most likely, south of 66. if you live south of 66, you'll have the best chance for storms in your area. still have that line, tracking it from new york, pennsylvania, all the way through our region and back to the west. we're waiting to see if anything developing farther to the west. but this might be the only game in town for the next couple of hours. tomorrow, temperatures 65 at 7:00 a.m., 74 mostly cloudy at no

isolated thunderstorm. and tom kierein has future weather to time it out tomorrow. >> we have a lower chance tomorrow of any storms in the afternoon, and into the early evening hours. here's a look at the hour by hour timing on that. a bit of cloudiness around in the morning hours. we get some sunshine breaking out. and then as we get into the afternoon hours, you can see the cloud cover kind of fills back in again. and those areas in the green where we might get a few showers popping up, but for the most part, widely scattered, maybe isolated showers. for the commute, waiting at the bus stop, the metro, maybe some fog, rural areas in the 60s. noontime, mid 70s. then a possible shower, but much of the region will stay dry in the afternoon with clouds around and temperatures around 80 degrees. >> and this frontal boundary moving through the region, that means much nicer weather as we head into thursday and friday. some

basically what happens, when you go to buy a house, there's often a financial transaction that happens at the end. perhaps you're paying for the house in full, or putting a bit of a down payment. often times the e-mail instructions are sent to your personal e-mail box and hackers are tracking some of these brokers and sales agents, real estate agents and they're also targeting title companies, so when they are communicating, a hacker can intercept the e-mail, attach false financial information, instructing you to wire your money to a place that actually they control and is not the destination of where your money needs to be going. we've been hearing from families who have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in these scams. tonight on "nbc nightly news," we go through all of it, show you how it works, what the fbi says is going on, and what you can do to protect yourself. >> i was just going to ask how people can protect themss.

was supposed to be taking care of her. >> kristin wright is outside holy cross hospital in silver spring with the latest on this investigation. kristin, what are you learning? >> reporter: well, jim and wendy, that little girl is still here in the hospital at holy cross, and the more we find out about this sad situation, the more questions there are and the more disturbing it gets. just a little girl, 2 years old, big brown eyes, in a mickey mouse hospital gown, receiving some sort of medical treatment at holy cross. her whole story, a sad mystery. police say a woman brought the toddler to the hospital sunday and told the staff she didn't know who the girl was or her parents. the hospital called police. they aren't saying a lot. but you have to listen closely. >> the girl was with a woman. the woman went to her sister's house and asked the sister to then watch the
