gone nowhere. at this time, the bull's legal charge continues. in lower manhattan, i'm roseanne colletti, news4, new york. now at 6:00, a burglary, a fire and a stand-off with police. tonight we're piecing together the bizarre chain of events and hearing from a victim who watched his home go up in flames. the sound of gunfire fills the air, crime has taken over the streets of this d.c. neighborhood. the impact on long-time residents, whoa tat the police f is planning to do about it. and a prescription for trouble as we learn about the moments leading up to tiger woods's arrest. news4 at 6:00 starts now. but we'll begin with the weather. we have some wild weather, threat of strong storms, right now a tornado warning in clark county, virginia. >> take a look at the conditions in our area right now, cloudy and cool for much of the day. now we're shifting gears as heavy rain starts to move in to rt

>> a lot of that is coming over the mountains. >> yeah, and a tornado warning issued for clark county in virginia until 6:30. we have two extremely strong storms. clark county and fauquier county. this one too has some rotation to it. i want to zoom in to the tornado warning right here. there's a hook echo with this storm. making its way through clark county right now. severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado warning. i want to zoom in on this area here just a little bit more and show you some of the areas in this path. you can see, here's the storm. and this is the hook echo. this is the hook echo right here. if you're in berryville, i want to make sure you're in your house in the lowest room of your house, whether it's a basement. if it's not a basement, get to the lowest level, make sure you're in a closet, a bathroom, you want to be in an enclosed room without windows. so berryville there. let's track this. let me move out of the way, so you can track it to move

i don't want to zoom in. i want to track it toward the east. go ahead and zoom back out a little bit and then we can track it a little bit better here. we're going to track that notch as it moves right along route 7. if you live around route 7 in clark county, take cover immediately. get inside your house, make sure you're at the lowest level. this will be near the berryville area around 6:14. web towebbtown, 6:21. you see the hook, that's what we'll be watching. and this storm to the south, around culpeper. severe thunderstorm warning for this. fauquier, prince william and stafford counties. over 300 lightning strikes. let's take the lightning off. i want to show you this. i want to zoom in to this, because this also has a little bit of a hook echo. no tornado warning with this one just

around the remington area. 15 and 17 where they move off. we're looking at that just around the remington area, this one to the south and east as it's making its way. in you live in southern fauquier county, watch out in that area, places could be bleak around 6:22. somerville, 6:33. and this is the storm to watch. in through clark county right now, if you're just to the west of bluemont, berryville. east of i-81, this is 314. zoom back in and show you where it is through clark county. you have the intersection of 340 and route 7 in clark county, around the berryville region. once again, this would be the tornado. if there's one out there, it would be right here, and of course that is indicated by doppler radar. let me look at this report here as we make our way through. reading what the national weather service has

around berryville. tornado warning for east central frederick county, including areas east of winchester, clark county and southern jefferson county. for those in the direct path of the tornado, flighting debris will be dangerous. move inside, get in the lowest room of your house, without windows. there could be damage to roof, siding and windows. mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed. if you live in a mobile home in that region, you want to make sure you get out of the mobile home. it's actually better to get into a ditch, put your hands over your head to get out of that region. so we're tracking this storm very closely. let's loop that whole thing moving to the south and east. you see what we're looking at here. this whole storm, a very large storm. it's

cabletown around 6:11. the tornado warning to the south, this is going to track right along route 7 and on that track, it will move into western portions of loudoun county. including the bluemont area. once again, in berryville, coming your way around the next five to ten minutes. get indoors immediately if you can. make sure -- don't even worry about anything outside. if you have the kids or pets outdoors, bring them in immediately. get to the lower levels, a closet, a bathroom, somewhere without a window. that's the hook echo. a lot of times you get a little bit of enhancement south to the main storm, that's what we're seeing here. we'll continue to move and track this along route 7. there's not a lot of other towns there. this is just around the berryville area. you take a look now. take

second. because what we've had, berryville at 6:13. and again, take the radar off. the national weather service has taken it out of frederick county and has moved in only towards clark county. so this is only for clark county now. we continue to narrow this as the tornado gets closer to the radar and moves out of frederick county, does not come into jefferson county. only clark county. we'll continue to watch this through the next couple of hours. one thing we want to continue to show, radar back on. one thing also, you're probably seeing very strong hail. this is the hail core right up here to the north. notice the pink. we have had reports of quarter sized hail with this storm. there's the rotation, around the berryville area that we are looking at. this is a little different radar. it's called a composite radar. putting different radars together. notice the pink, any time we have the pink or purple, that means hail with that storm. so not only is it

storm, it has a lot of hail. it will continue to move to the south and east, towards the cable town area. so if you live along round 7 in clark county, along route 340 in jefferson county and clark county, you really want to make sure you stay tuned to this one, because we'll continue to watch it for you. the tornado warning goes until 6:30. i'll send it back to you for 5 to 10 minutes. i want to track this and get the latest details. before i do that, take this off. it just updated. let's go back to the actual radar site out of dulles and show you what's happening. take the composite off and look at the level 2 data. it still has that hook. that's what i was worried about. there it is again, right through the berryville area, just south of berryville. the tornado would be right in here. in berryville, moving along route 7,

in southeast, d.c. for you. a woman has been struck by a car just off 12th street in southeast. the victim is elderly and has critical injuries. it is a woman. we'll be staying on top of this with any updates as soon as we get them. also, this is a story we have for you now that has a little bit of everything. it has a break-in, a fire, stand-off in the woods. police say the man responsible is now under arrest as new details are starting to surface. it started at a home on surratts road in clinton, but quickly spread to the forest behind. tracee wilkins spoke exclusively with that homeowner and has a live story for you. tracee? >> reporter: this was an amazing story. he has the house boarded up. no telling when he'll be able to move back in after the devastating fire that was set by the suspected burglar. people in this neighborhood tell me they are disappointed in what happened here

and now we know that this man was allegedly trying other homes before he picked his target. >> good morning. >> how are you? >> reporter: the richards have lived in this home for 40 years and could not believe what they were seeing outside their window today. >> we were just sitting here watching. >> reporter: they got a call from a neighbor saying they think they were almost burglarized. >> a neighbor called and said that he had come in my yard and he left out of here and went next door and broke in there. >> i went to work this morning and got a phone call 45 minutes after i got there. this is where we're at. >> reporter: christopher crabtree owns the home that was broken into opinion. >> -- broken into. >> reporter: neighbors saw the burglar and called police. >> officers moved to the perimeter of the house and he fled into the wood line armed with a

>> reporter: police say gardineret is the house on fire and ran out with a shotgun he stole from inside the home. >> smoke so bad. >> reporter: he was armed and out of sight, making it that much harder for the fire department to safely put the fire out. >> it was a concern of ours, we wanted to make sure we had information from the police that we wasn't in the house, wasn't in the wood line. the decision was made to quickly knock down the fire and get out. >> reporter: police say he was found hiding in woods near the house and arrested without incident. now the homeowner is trying to figure out what's next for the home he recently refurbished. >> it's trashed. what can i say. it's trashed. >> reporter: we took a look at gardiner's criminal record and it's a long criminal history, specifically involving breaking and entering and also armed robbery. reporting live in clinton, i'm tracee wilkins, back to you. asleep at the wheel. new details

all right, everybody, still tracking that tornado warning in through clark county. we've been tracking this storm, it pulls extremely quickly in through frederick county. numerous hail reports and damage reports now coming out of frederick county, virginia, just to the east of winchester. one thing we've noticed on this, a lot of lightning early, that big pulse, we saw the hail coming down. now a new severe thunderstorm warning, and this is important. this storm weakening. the tornado warning still intact until 6:30. the new thunderstorm warning jefferson county, clark county, and most of loudoun county until leesburg until 7:00? >> it is just

>> most likely until 7:00. the tornado warning in towards clark county. let's zoom in to the possible tornado, a doppler indicated tornado. however, we've been watching this around berryville now. if you're in berryville, or you live along round 7 in clark county and now in towards eastern portions of loudoun county, make sure you're inside your house. make sure you're in an interior room. if you have a basement, get into the basement or a closet or bathroom in the basement. you want to be in a room that does not have windows associated with it. on this track, the concern wotod be around berryville, webbtown, bluemont, round hill, purcellville. this is the main storm we're watching now. again, put the lightning back on, tom. one thing we've noticed

the lightning, not seeing a lot of it. we saw it really pulse up. but now only a few lightning strikes, it tells us the storm is weakening a bit. earlier it had a really well defined hook. still has one, but it might be a little bit higher in the atmosphere. it may not be hitting the ground. notice now they have taken the tornado warning down for clark coun county. this is very good news. only the a severe thunderstorm warning. a lot of lightning ahead of this. what you're going to see when this updates, you'll see the radar moving. lovetsville, 6:23. hamilton, 6:41. leesburg, right around 7:00. if you live in loudoun or clark counties, please get indoors. loudoun, you have time to get your kids in, get your patio furniture in if it's going to fly away.

with this. i want to go to the storm to the south. this one does have some stronger, rather some very strong storms as well. let's go down to that one down towards the culpeper area, in towards fauquier county. this storm has been weakening a little bit. still a severe thunderstorm warning in effect here. this storm moving off. we've seen more of it develop to the west of the main storm. a lot of lightning with this one earlier. this one starting to weaken just a bit, but still a very strong storm. we've seen the lightning here and now more lightning back to the west in towards culpeper county. so back building a storm we'll continue to watch. we'll keep you posted from the storm center, but two severe thunderstorm warnings. any others develop, we'll keep you posted from the storm center. we also have new details emerging after the arrest of tiger woods. turns out, he was not drinking, but under the influence of prescription medicine when he

holiday weekend. sarah dallof with our report. >> reporter: tiger woods, again making headlines off the golf course. after he was picked up on suspicion of dui early monday morning. >> for the longest time, we marvelled at his golf shots. and now we're transfixed by this mugshot. >> reporter: according to court records, woods' car was stopped on a jupiter, florida, roadway. inside the pro golfer was sound asleep. when awakened by an officer, he didn't know where he was. a breathalyzer test showed no signs of alcohol in his system. woods released a statement, saying in part, what happened was an unexpected reaction to prescription medications. i didn't realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly. woods has seen his professional and personal life play out before the public. in 2009, he wrecked his suv, followed by an apology for extra

profile divorce. once considered the world's stop golfer, woods has not won a major since 2008 and has undergone multiple back surgeries, including one last month. last week in a blog post, he wrote, i haven't felt this good in years. i want to say unequivocally, i want to play professional golf again. >> we forgive and we forget very quickly in this country. so if tiger does come back, yes, i think people will pull for him. >> reporter: for now, golf on the back burner as his legal case moves front and center. sarah dallof, nbc news. here in our area, officers tell us they're finding more and more impaired drivers under the influence of drugs. it's a growing problem and a dangerous one. julie carey reports, it's sending some fairfax county officers to special training. >> reporter: lieutenant eli cory remembers well one of the most impaired drivers he's ever arrested. >> i saw a jeep wrangler, the

wheel and his car was going about 2 miles an hour down the street. >> reporter: that driver had been drinking, but cory said increasingly drugged driving is creating just as much danger. and in the fairfax county police department, there's now a special squad focused exclusively on finding and stopping drugged and drunk drivers. this video created by the department showcases their mission. >> it's a whole different set of indicators that go along with drugged driving as opposed to drunk driving. >> reporter: that's why these officers are now getting specialized training. >> in the police department, we started training starting with our dwi squad on being drug recognition experts, to be able to pick on the more subtle cues of being intoxicated with drugs. >> reporter: dave alvo is a defense attorney who often represents dwi clients. he has this

drugs and driving can get you in just as much trouble as drinking and driving. >> a common misconception is that dui is driving drunk. it isn't. it's driving while you are unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. >> the combination can be killer. i've had clients with very small amounts of alcohol and have taken prescription drugs and totally black out. >> reporter: defense attorney and officer alike say the tiger woods' incident could drive home the risks of drugged driving. >> to see what happened to him as a reminder to everyone that taking any sort of drug and getting behind the wheel is dangerous and can have a huge impact on your life. >> reporter: prosecuting drugged drivers can be more challenging, because in addition to a blood test being required, doctors are often required to come to court to testify about the level of impairment. a new national study also underscores this changing dwi landscape. it shows for the first time ever, drivers killed

the end of the tornado warning is the beginning of several hours of stormy weather for some folks in our area. >> it's bubbling out west, north and south of 66 out there. >> yeah, we have two storms. tom and i continue to monitor these storms to see what they're going to be doing here. we're in red mode as you can see. tom's monitoring the radar now. let's show you what's happening across our region. we have storms in through northern virginia. this is the area we would be seeing under the gun and that's what happened now. the strongest storm is towards warrenton, southern fauquier county. this storm, which did have a tornado warning until 6:30, the warning has been canceled, but this storm is starting to pulse again. we see a lot of lightning, and that's a great predictor of what a storm is doing. really a great telling of what a storm is doing. if you see a lot of lightning, that means the storm is strengthening, right when we saw

warning pop up. when the lightning goes away, that's when you start to see it weaken. we saw it weaken and now starting to come back through fauquier and stafford. i would not be surprised to see another warning here, including 95 and quantico. that could come out at any minute. there's a couple storms here, one here, here, and back to the west. you can see anywhere we have the purple, there's a couple chances for hail. we've seen hail out of this. i ghot a report from a viewer in culpeper that saw nickel and quarter-sized hail. there was a well defined hook echo west of berryville. we're checking now to see if we received any damage. this is moving along route 7, towards leesburg. you can see that still has some rotation. this yellow marker means mid level rotation. no longer surface rotation. look at the lightning, though.

weakening. you also don't have any of the purple coloring here. meaning the hail could be weakening out of this storm too. but severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 7:00 for almost all of loudoun county, including leesburg, along 15, all of route 50, route 7 as well, in through portions of loudoun county. we'll continue to watch that for you too. this is part of a system that has been to the north, providing a lot of severe weather. this is really the last gasp of this. i think as it moves to the east, it may die. you know this because you've seen cloud cover all day. wi 7:00, just to the east of 95, and fizzling out. still some shower activity down to the south and east, but the rest of us, starting to clear out behind this. tomorrow, starting off with cloud cover, sunshine in the afternoon, could see a repeat tomorrow, maybe another couple of storms. your storm impact tonight, high wind, hail is going to be a pretty g

who is responsible for her. >> and news4's kristin wright is live outside of holy cross hospital with more on this developing story. kristin? >> reporter: well, chris and wendy, this little girl is only 2 years old and right now, she is here at holy cross hospital. now, everything we know about the situation so far just makes it even more disturbing. at first she was known as jane doe. hospital staff didn't know her name, neither did police. now, detectives are working to see if a crime was committed. police say a woman brought the 2-year-old to holy cross sunday for medical treatment and said she didn't know the toddler or her parents. police will only say this about that woman. >> she was asked to babysit the child on saturday by her sister. when she couldn't get in touch with her sister to ask about this child, she then brought the child to the hospital. >> reporter: dti

some family. now they're saying they're identifying the legal guardian. >> the detectives will confirm guardianship, also investigate at t the circumstances and ensure this child has proper care. >> reporter: the national center for missing and exploited children said the 2-year-old was injured when she was brought to the hospital, but police will only say she's receiving medical treatment. >> reporter: wish we could tell you more about how this little girl is doing tonight, but due to privacy laws, the hospital cannot say and police have not been table able to tell us that either. i'm carol maloney at the live desk. the nationals bryce harper has just been suspended four games. the giants' hunter strickland, six games. the punishment just announced by major league baseball. both

appealing and are eligible to play tonight. this stems from an incident yesterday afternoon when harper was hit by strickland, inciting a benches-clearing brawl. both players also fined an undisclosed amount. more details in about 20 minutes. there was a change in tone in today's white house press briefing. peter alexander joins us live as the president's team weighs in on the growing investigation into russia. coming up on news4, it was intended to help small businesses here in anacostia, but now it's being expanded nationwide. and we still have our severe thunderstorm warning in effect for loudoun county until 7:00. but i think the strongest storm to the south, a lot of lightning in towards stafford county, southern fauquier county, we've had half dollar sized hail reported with this storm. all moving toward the south and east. we'll continue to monitor these storms. i'll have the latest, where these are going, what to expect the next couple days, coming up in just a few minutes.

we come back to a white house in crisis after an extended overseas trip and the holiday, officials had to face some tough questions on russia. a lot of them focused on the president's son-in-law and reports that jared kushner tried to establish a secret, back channel with russia. blayne alexander is at the white house where answers seem to be in short supply. >> reporter: facing cameras for the first time in nearly two weeks. white house spokesman sean spicer returning to a slew of questions, topping the list, russia. >> your question assumes facts not confirmed. >> reporter: a pushback, but not a denial of the latest twist in the russia investigation. son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner, now under scrutiny. officials saying he trying to set up back channels with russia for private communication. >> there's a lot of stuff that has gotten pushed out based on unnamed,

attack in manchester, england. british police are now piecing together a timeline of the suicide bomber's movements. in the days that led up to that attack. they're asking the public to look at this picture of the bomber wheeling a large blue suitcase. he was spotted with it at two different locations on the day of the attack. investigators have not found that suitcase. the bbc is also obtaining -- or has obtained chilling new surveillance video showing the bomber casually shopping. it was recorded a few hours before the attack that killed 22 people, leaving an ariana grande concert last week. grande plans to return to manchester on sunday and she's bringing some high profile friends who will be performing a benefit concert for the victims of the bombing. coldplay, katy perry, miley cyrus, farrel williams, usher are among the artists slated to perform with her. for more coverage of the concert bombing, h

press briefing. i retweeted peter alexander who reported that spicer only took questions for 19 minutes. peter, this put the brief in briefing. did the white house deny jared kushner's conversation took place? >> appreciate that retweet there. but let's be clear. the white house and press secretary sean spicer are struggling to fend off questions about contacts between jared kushner and russian officials. it all stems from reporting first from "the washington post," then from "the new york times" that kushner had met privately and once with michael flynn, the ousted national security adviser, separately with a banker. and the possibility of secret back-channel communications between kushner and others and russian officials. aides here that are familiar with the talks tell me it was the russians who suggested these back-channel communications, that they wanted to put russian military officials in connection with michael flynn. but the bottom line is, sean spicer today did not deny

from the white house. you can watch the "nbc nightly news" with lester holt right after our broadcast. now let's had the back to the storm center and take a look at just what is happening out west. has it simmered down a bit? >> it has. there are no warnings now across our region. that's very good news. we're still in red because we have stronger storms out there. but the one in loudoun and clark counties has weakened considerably. we have reports out of shenandoah of some of the fire and rescue areas there. let's look at the radar. in through loudoun county, this storm weakening, but we've had reports in frederick county, virginia, and clark county, virginia, of some damage, some trees down, structures down. two structures down. and numerous trees down. that tells us we could have had a tornado there. this storm to the south is the storm that i'm w

me know when we have it. this storm here has a lot of lightning associated with it. again, it's been pulsing up and down. it's over bealeton. this is hail video from bealeton. this coming in as pea sized to marble sized hail. i have reports of nickel sized and half dollar sized hail around the bealeton area. look at that rain coming down too. extremely heavy rain and a lot of hail in that region. this storm system continues to move to the south and east. once again, no longer a warned storm, but as you look at this now, coming into the quantico area, we're watching this storm right around quantico, in through stafford county. if you live in stafford, fauquier, prince william counties, this storm still means business. it may not have a warning, but you could get winds and hail out of this as well. you can see that line of storms making its way off toward the east.

going to be a mess tonight too. around leesburg, we've been watching this storm. it came through berryville, and eastern frederick county, virginia. now really diminishing. notice no lightning strikes. is lightning turned on, tom? >> yeawe turned it on and there still no lightning there. so this is good news. when we lose the lightning, that tells us the storm is weakening. heads up around leesburg and around 15. it's moving to the east 25 miles an hour. in leesburg around 6:54, poolsville, 7:06 as this crosses the river. this is all part of a line that has continued to develop. most of this, though, we're just about done with. we're going to see that one storm to the south continue to move across our zones. next couple days, really nice
