some areas of improvement, 66 degrees. very calm wind and that's helping the fog settle. gaithersburg, half-mile visibility but we've seen big improvements so far as we go through the rest of the morning hours. warrington to a mile. was at zero earlier this morning. the relevant of this morning, i think we'll see fluctuations still looking at clouds around 2:00, light showers around hagerstown. we're going to keep the clouds in the forecast. temperatures low 80s. we do have a chance for showers, thunderstorms for the evening commute. keep that in mind. a few around. not as bad as yesterday. you might want to have the umbrella, big changes as we end out the week and head for the weekend. of course, we'll have the details and forecast for that through the weekend. that's all coming up. >> sheena and chuck, thank you. 6:02. continuing our team coverage. last night's severe storms that hit northern

ridge mobile home park just outside of winchester where it looked like a tornado may have touched down. >> justin, we know that some of the trees fell on top of homes there. how's the cleanup going this morning. >> reporter:? hey there, aaron, so far, cleanup has not started just yet. close to 6:00 last night the storm broke through bringing heavy winds and hail too. take a look at the damage it's caused here. snapping huge trees at its base, and several feet out here, nearly missing another home. i want you to walk with me this way. i can show you how it fell on this home here. part of it here, branches here just missing the front of the home. the relief is that no one was hurt we're hearing as a result of the storm. county officials saying, too, it appears localized in this area of berryville in winchester. and it

and we can tell you at this time, people are still working to see how big the damage of the storm was. we spoke with one resident who said lots of panic after the storm came through and what he did at the height of the storm. >> the hail started. me and my uncle were standing at the front porch. we were watching the storm actively. and it started to hail. i told everybody to go to the bathroom. i know storms. i knew exactly what was happening. >> reporter: and crews will have to cut through this tree at some point. you can see a very large tree. a lot of trees were cut through yesterday to get power restored through the area here. no reports of damages. i spoke to a official who said that moat of the neighborhoods are going to be clear so kids can get to school today. at this point, we have to wait to see just what this was, if it was a tornado, a

perhaps it's a bad storm. that will be decided by weather officials. that's the latest, back into you. >> justin, thank you. 6:05. angie goff following the breaking news out of the bombing in afghanistan. >> americans, stay away from kabul, that is the word from the american embassy. after that suicide bomb killed 80 people. take a look. that was actually a truck bomb explosion, security forces, ambulances rushing through the city looking for survivors. it's an attack that. whatted in the area known as the green zone. a well-protected part of the city, home to the u.s. military headquarters, embassies and many other foreign embassies. a mushroom cloud right there continues to tower over the green zone. the weight of the blast so strong that it sent shock into houses and countless cars during rush hour for up to half a mile. no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far which, by the wa

president trump considers the u.s. military's request recently for thousands of more troops to be deployed to afghanistan. aaron. >> angie, thank you. if north korea ever launches a missile at the united states, the pentagon says it has a way to stop it. the u.s. shot down an intercontinental missile as part of a test yesterday. north korea has ramped up its threat within the last six months with nine successful missile launches. the military says north korea may have the capability to fire at hawaii. president trump meets with the prime minister of vietnam. but the stories that dominate the day are the russia investigation and a presidential tweet. here are 4 things to know this morning. former national security adviser michael flynn will provide personal and business documents to the senate intelligence committees. the intelligence committees have also asked for information from a former white house aide and president trump's personal attorney michael cohen. cohen says he will only testify if subpoenaed.

that the president's use of his cell phone is raising security concerns. but it is the president's "covfefe" tweet that is lights up twitter. we'll have more on that at 6:30. a man found dead inside an apartment. prince george's county police said they were called to check on a man in newton street. once they got there, they found a man's bode with signs of trauma. his identity has not been released yet. the d.c. neighborhood is on edge after a rash of shootings and it's not coming together in hopes of venting any more violence dozens marched in the neighborhood because they said they are algernon jones was killed there. police are looking into where the shootings are

an elderly woman is in the hospital with critical injuries after she was hit by an suv in southeast washington. fire officials said a driver ran into her at the intersection of club street and pennsylvania last night. no word yet on what caused that accident. it is a tough day for students at gwen park high school. norman white was killed last night in clinton while driving home from a pizza parlor. prince george's county police say the 17-year-old lost control of his car and slammed into a tree at temple hill road at celina street. a funeral service will be held at the first baptist church in glenarden. the naacp is calling for a zero hate policy on bias. it comes after the unprovoked stabbing of lieutenant richard collins at the university of maryland. police have l

melissa, what's goi ing on? >> we're talking about a five-mile backup. inner loop one lane getting by but now all lane it's open. still a five-mile backup, major for a lot of people headed through that area. chuck. >> all right. we've got a foggy start again after pretty powerful thunderstorms late yesterday. things have settled down quite a bit overnight. certainly a foggy start early this morning. it's not going to change too much between 9:00 and 11. there are pockets of visibility down after a mile. sunshine making a comeback at 9:00. more sunshine to move temperatures from the low to mid-60s up into the low 80s. though there will be a chance of an isolated thunderstorm or two. right now, 66 and in the fog. sheena's got that peek at the weekend coming right up. angie goff here at the live desk. it's something that

think about whenever we fly. it's become a reality and a real scare for passengers. laptop battery, it caught fire on board a jetblue plane from jfk to san francisco. the smoke caused the pilot to have to land the plane in michigan. the fire was put out before they touched down. nobody was hurt. the plane and flight finally made its way to the last destination. and here is the head line one d.c. school lost more than a quarter of its teaching staff this year. it was "the washington post" report that shocked many when it came out earlier this week. but this morning, d.c. mayor muriel bowser said the resignations were quote, outliers and do not represent a real problem for student it's. and she tells news4 that parents appear to have more faith ever in the d.c. public school system. >> parents aren't losing confidence and we know that by increase

a twitter campaign is helping investigators solve a mystery that goes back decades. a little girl went missing in palm beach county, florida, back in then 84. over the weekend, the county sheriff's os started sharing posts like this. and detectives said they received several promising leads. luna was 8 years old when last seen at a grocery store. even though there was a massive search she was never found. there are some 50 tweets now. to ynow to the illicit affa that so many remember from so many years ago. mary kay letourneau and her student have separated. court documents say vili fualaau asked for a separation earlier this morning. letourneau was accused of raping

sunday's rain chances continue to creep ever upwards. visibility starting to improve now. more than enough sunshine to get temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. we'll detail more about the weekend coming up. >> all right, thank you. back to that breaking traffic news in arlington that melissa just told us about. >> this is darcy spencer near the scene of a downed tree on chain bridge. right there on glebe road. darcy. >> reporter: well, good morning. well, we had the big storms last night, so there's a lot of damage across the area. this is just one example. take a look right here. a little bit of good news for commuters this morning. they have made great progress in the last half hour, trying to get this large branch out of the roadway. we're here on north glebe road. the tree cutters there have already cut up the tree or large branch. and that shredding it. looks like they're wrapping up soon but some of the damage has been done on north glebe road. if you take a look here.

we're right over chain bridge on the virginia side. if you cross the bridge, canal road, you can see commuters are lining up here trying to get through the roadway. there had been flares out here earlier but they are gone. commuters need to be prepared. if this is part of your normal commute, you need to find a way around this, north glebe road near chain bridge. road crews are here getting the tree out of the way. hopefully, it will be cleared up soon and commuters can get on their way this morning. we'll send it back to you. >> darcy spencer live in arlington. thank you, darcy. 6:34. if you live in virginia you may have seen all of that hail overnight. this is the video. >> over until frederick county, trees on top of mobile homes. that's where news4's justin finch is this morning. justin looks like a lot of clean upto do. >> reporter: there is a lot of cleanup to do indeed. we're off of route 7

ridge mobile home park where neighbors are waking up to find damage. perhaps few will find damage closer to their homes than this home here. this is a large tree falling. large branches falling on just their front steps here. remarkably no injuries to report we're hearing from frederick county officials but to show you the enormity of the tree here. take a look at the base where it snapped. this is more than six feet high and that is where it broke. it also extends well nond thbeys home that it hit and fairly missed the home in the back. neighbors described heavy hail conditions that through through here close to 6:00 last night. the damage appears to be localized in this area of route 7. neighbors are waking up to see lots of large branches in front of their homes. some damage to their cars as well. now, later on today, you will hear perhaps just what kind of storm blew through here. officials are expected to come out here and survey and analyze the

80 people were killed more than 300 injured. bodies are still being pulled from the rubble. truck bomb exploded near the u.s. embassy and military headquarters. you're looking at the german embassy and how zached damaged. taliban has denied responsibility. but history shows that terrorist groups have both stated attacks on the capital in the past. with the wake of the requests for the pentagon to send troops. and we're seeing delays in alexandria, virginia. it's clearing up now. that car that caused all the problems this morning, we don't know how it started, but that fire is out now. and we're working to learn whether everyone was hurt there. >> take a look at these live pictures right now. crews are working to remove a

this is between the chain bridge and the arlington parkway. that road is shut down to get that tree out of the way. and less than an hour ago, commuters had to turn around at that spot. this should be wrapped up pretty soon. until then, avoid that area altogether. 6:47. this morning, we're also working to learn whether the national weather service will classify yesterday's storm in virginia as a tornado. >> several trees fell down on top of mobile homes and power was knocked out. news4's justin finch is live in frederick county with more. justin, good morning. >> reporter: hey, eun, aaron, good morning. neighbors are expecting to find more scenes like this, very large trees falling on or near their properties. take' look at the size of this branch. i can tell you it is very heavy. we see a lot of these in the streets. also on top of homes as well. we're told by neighbors the storm blew through at 6:00 last night. lots of heavy wind and hail that

crews arrived here to come in, cut the branchs and eventually restore power. we're told by county crews, there are no reports that any injuries related to this storm at this time. i want to see some of the damage that came through here. lots of extensive damage with lots of trees out here which is not uncommon in route 7 at the blue ridge mobile home park. we spoke to a woman who described for us very, very scary conditions. she said she also has damage now to her windshield. take a listen. >> the tree branches are coming down. >> reporter: what do you think happened? >> tornado. i saw it. i saw it. huh? i saw the wind twirling- wind twirling -- >> reporter: thank you so much. as you heard from her vantage point, the

all the way over to the top there. visibility will continue to improve over the next couple hours. we have a nice warming trend back in the 80s for today. and near 80s for tomorrow. right now with the clouds around, a very nice north breeze. averaging 13 miles per hour. the return of that breeze is helping to improve the visibility very quickly. 66 in washington. 60s across most of the map as well. but again, we'll get sunshine back by 8:00 or 9:00 this morning. visibility is already improving. it will be a gorgeous day to be outside. highs near 82 degrees today. clouds will come back and another chance for a shower or thunderstorm later on today. right now, most of the light rain is confined across parts of north maryland. that's probably where it's going to stay for the next couple of hours. thunderstorm chances do come back later today. one or two may be on the strong side. we'll be here to post you on that. much is focused to the north. we have dry weather for the next few days but i'm worried about the weekend, sheena. >> me, too, chuck.
