>> announcer: "news4 midday" begins with breaking news. breaking news now, a man was arrested inside the trump international hotel. >> according to police, he was making some kind of threats. they decided to search his car. inside they found multiple guns. news4's darcy spencer kicking off our team coverage, live on pennsylvania avenue. hi there, darcy. >> reporter: good morning. we're here across the street from trump international hotel. i can tell you it is business as usual today here just blocks away from the white house. at this hour, we're awaiting a press conference from d.c.'s police chief. as soon as that press conference gets

to you live. sources tell nbc news that this man who drove here from pennsylvania is apparently a trump supporter and did not mean to harm the president. let's show you some video of a security guard posted out front of the hotel this morning. there is heightened security here. the suspect in this case, brian mulls, is from he hedenboro, pennsylvania. police received information that he was here in washington apparently at the hotel and had weapons. police found a gun and a rifle inside his vehicle outside of the hotel, along with 90 rounds of ammunition. now, he's been charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of unregistered ammunition. now, police say this man is a veteran. let's hear some reaction from people we spoke to outside the hotel. >> we were trying to go to the tower to look at the

they said it was closed today. they made maybe tomorrow. but we're leaving today. >> reporter: so you don't get to see the tower. >> no. >> reporter: do you think it had anything to do with this? >> i thought maybe. >> it's kind of alarming. they probably haven't caught ten others, that's probably the one they caught. you have to keep your eyes open and stay alert and be safe. >> reporter: again, the suspect in this case is under arrest. we are awaiting a press conference from the police chief. we'll bring that to you live as soon as it happens. we'll send it back to you. >> darcy spencer live on pennsylvania avenue. mark segraves is standing by for that press conference. we'll check with him as soon as it begins. this whole situation is very breaking. brian mulls is from pennsylvania. he is the suspect. he was arrested at trump international hotel overnight, police finding multiple guns, a gone and a

his car. mulls is a military veteran. we're working to find out the details and as soon as we do, they'll be coming to our nbc washington app. the associated press reports that president trump is expected to withdraw the u.s. from the paris climate agreement. nearly 200 nations, including the u.s., agreed two years ago to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. the president tweeted he will announce his decision in the next few days. but this is the russia investigation that continues to cloud the trump administration. news4's tracie potts has the latest. >> reporter: from the white house, no confirmation and no denial that adviser and son-in-law jared kushner tried to use a secret secure line to russia. instead, this. >> in general terms, back channels are an appropriate part of diplomacy. >> reporter: sean spicer's days at the podium

white house. communications director mike dubke resigned on tuesday as the white house team struggled to answer questions. >> these are substantive questions that have very little to do with containing political fallout. >> reporter: two former campaign officials including ousted campaign manager corey lewandowski were seen outside the white house. former national security adviser mike flynn, who originally took the fifth, has agreed to provide some documents to the congressional investigative committees. >> mike cohen is in potential jeopardy. >> reporter: investigators want a list of his russian contacts. now a senior intelligence official tells nbc that one of our allies, germany, wants nothing to do with u.s. intelligence on the upcoming

they're looking into whether russia might try to interfere. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. we want to get back to the news about the man arrested inside the trump international hotel. we're standing by from a press conference at d.c. police headquarters right now. >> mark segraves is there. we're told the police chief is walking out. we'll start with the mayor. >> i'm muriel bowser, i'm mayor of washington, d.c. i'm here at the metropolitan police department's headquarters in washington. and i want to provide a brief update on a disturbing incident that occurred in the nation's capital last night but was resolved quickly and peacefully. shortly after 1:00 a.m. this morning, the metropolitan police department responded to the trump international hotel at the old post office building for the report of a firearm inside a vehicle of a hotel guest. upon arrival at the hotel, mpd were able to speak

vehicle owner, and 43-year-old brian mulls of edenboro, pennsylvania was arrested. police officers recovered firearms and ammunition from the vehicle. i want to thank the officers who responded for their prompt response to this incident involving an individual with an illegal firearm in the nation's capital. we also appreciate the coordinated efforts of the secret service in this effort. this incident was resolved without use of force and for that we are grateful for the work done by all of our law enforcement officers and the intelligence gathering that led them there. today's incident is an important reminder that when you see something, it is important to say something to an official. here in the district we take very seriously when anyone threatens the use of harm in our city. and the chief wl

>> good morning. thank you for coming on short notice. we have from the secret service deputy special agent mike ball, my assistant chief for homeland security, jeff carroll, and the first district manager morgan cain that are behind me. this morning the mpd and secret service received information from the pennsylvania state police department that an individual adult male was traveling to the district of columbia, possibly the trump hotel, armed with weapons. pennsylvania state police had received this information from a tip, and they acted very quickly to share that information with us. they provided, pennsylvania state provided the suspect's name and a description of the vehicle. mpd and secret service immediately responded and contacted the hotel security at the trump hotel, who located the vehi

the mpd's explosive ordnance unit responded to the scene and found no hazardous materials. an ar-15 assault rifle and .40 caliber handgun were recovered from the vehicle. after further investigation, officers discovered the individual from the tip who had checked himself into the trump hotel at approximately 0100 hours or 1:00 a.m. in the morning. and as the mayor mentioned, 43-year-old brian mulls of edenboro, pennsylvania was located in the hotel and arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of unregistered ammunition. i would like to thank the secret service, special operations division, and the officers of the first district for bringing this potentially tragic situation to a peaceful end. more importantly,

the suspect posed no immediate threat. a comprehensive investigation is being done. secret service relies heavily on its strong relationship with the metropolitan and all of our law enforcement partners. the department of homeland security is committed to a see something, say something campaign. we encourage all citizens to report all suspicious behavior to law enforcement. this investigation remains ongoing. thank you. capital. >> reporter: have you had a chance to talk with the man, can you characterize whether he's helpful and whether he's said anything that would indicate a motive? >> i can say he is being interviewed and he has been sharing information. >> reporter: what was the original tip other than he had guns in the car and that he was here in the city? >> i can't get into that detail. when the court documents are presented, you may be able to get more of that information. i don't want to say anything that would impact the case we have against this guy. >> reporter: will he make cutoff today? >> that i don't know. >> reporter: the original information that came out of your office was that he had made threats. are you now saying -- were there threats made to anybody? >> at this point we don't have enough information to charge him with making threats. >> reporter: you avoided a potential disaster or tragedy -- >> you've been listening to a news conference at d.c.

headers with police chief peter newsham and mayor muriel bowser. the big thing that came out of this news conference was they received tips from a concerned citizen and the pennsylvania state police. >> this started at 12:30 this morning, and within 30 minutes or so, police were able to respond and get to the hotel and make the arrest. they searched his car, they found a lot of ammunition, a glock pistol. police say they averted a potential disaster in the district of columbia. a lot of details remain unclear, we're still trying to figure out what threatening remarks he had made. >> the secret service is interviewing that suspe andct

couple of thunderstorms developing. otherwise we have big changes, with increasing rain chances into the weekend. i'll show you that forecast, coming up. >> sheena, thank you. we're trying to find out whether a severe storm in virginia was a tornado. the national weather service could make that call today. >> folks we spoke to said it felt like a tornado moved through their neighborhood, tearing down trees and knocking out electricity. justin finch is live with more. >> reporter: the progress is continuing this morning, a far cry from what we saw several hours ago when the big branches off that tree all but covered the front steps of this mobile home here. the guy who lives here is happy to see things getting back to

normal. the strength of several saws called upon to cut off what came down, a tall tree that crashed onto the roof, the big branches falling on the front steps of this winchester area mobile home. the owner says his friend is the only person who was there. she was shaken but unhurt. nearby, neighbors say they saw the skies change. >> i saw the wind blowing, it was scary. >> the next thing i knew, it was all white. >> reporter: carol clarke called up her sister who was across town. >> i'm scared now, so i ran to the phone and called barbara. >> i said just go to the bathroom and stay in the bathroom. normally that's the safest place, if you don't have a basement. >> reporter: carol and barbara are nearby neighbors who were glad to be spared heavy damage. they believe the system, with its heavy winds,

ripped through their trees, which fell below. barbara raced home. >> there was vehicles, your fire department, your rescue squad. >> reporter: emergency response from frederick county. neighbors say crews worked for hours to clear roads and restore electricity. as you can see, they're getting a large part of that tree off this mobile home here. county officials left here a short time ago, saying they were amazed, they dodged an actual bullet, saying the storm could have been much worse. it appears to have been hyperlocalized off this eastern stretch of route 7. they're glad to report no injuries at this time. as you mentioned, the next step here is figuring out just what this was, a tornado, a microburst, or perhaps something else. i'm justin finch, back to you. >> all right, justin, thank you. you might not see bryce harper for a few games. th

his four-game suspension. you'll remember this, major league baseball find him for this fight. the giants pitcher threw a 98-mile-per-hour ball at harper on monday. it was an all-out brawl, everyone's throwing punches. strickland also facing a suspension, a six-game suspension for him. he's also appealing it. that means both players can keep playing until the league makes a final decision. if you use amtrak to travel between d.c. up to new york, better be prepared for fewer trips this summer. that's because amtrak is doing repairs in the northeast corridor. it will start july 10th and run through september 1st. that means three round trip trains will be eliminated during that time. right now, the orlando international airport running as normal this morning, but chaos broke out last night when 26-year-old michaelet

>> announcer: "news4 midday" begins with breaking news. welcome back. we want to go back to darcy spencer who is on that breaking news story. police arrested a man with guns at the trump international hotel. >> police and secret service worked together to quickly catch that man. darcy is live outside the hotel right now. darcy, we heard the chief a short time ago say they avoided what they believe could have been a potential disaster in the district. what else are you learning? >> reporter: that's exactly right. that press conference with the mayor and the chief of police just wrapped up a short time ago over at d.c. police headquarters. i'm over here at the hotel. i can tell you that the hotel is open, it's business as usual. some interesting information coming out at that press conference. we still don't really know what the suspect had in mind. earlier we were told he had made threats. but then again we were told he's a trump supporter and wanted to protect the president. here is some of the

press conference. local police here in d.c. got a tip from state police in pennsylvania that this man was heading to d.c. with weapons. now, police found his vehicle in the trump international hotel garage. inside that vehicle they found an ar-15 rifle, a .40 caliber handgun as well as 90 rounds of ammunition. bryan moles is the suspect's name. he was arrested on gun and ammunition charges. moles is a veteran, we understand, from edinboro, pennsylvania, 260 miles away from washington. let's hear what the chief had to say at the press conference when news4's pat collins asked him about a potential motive in this case. >> i can tell you this. i was very concerned about this circumstance, very peculiar circumstance. and i believe that the officers and our federal partners and in particular the tipster coming forward averted a potential disaster here in our

>> reporter: the chief also said at this point they do not have enough information to charge the suspect with making threats. again, that's the key. we want to find out what he exactly had in mind when he came to washington, checked in at the trump international hotel. we understand the rifle was in plain view, the other gun was in his glove compartment. we're told he's cooperating with law enforcement and could be in court as early as later this afternoon. >> darcy, thank you. a cabdriver is due in court tomorrow to face charges of sexual abuse and kidnapping. a woman claims yared geremew mekonnen raped her in his kaberca cab early sunday morning. documents say another driver heard the woman screaming and was able to force the cab to stop at 16th and

northwest. mekonnen told police he didn't do anything to the woman. news4's darcy spencer will have more on this story on the nbc washington app. police want you to look at this image right here. they say if you see anything suspicious like this, containers like this while you're out for a walk or just out with kids, be careful. maryland capitnational capital police say that they could cause an explosion. inside, a mixture of water, drain cleaner and aluminum foil. they were found in germantown at the stream valley park. police warn if you find anything similar, don't touch it, just call them. if you live in d.c. and want a private security camera but can't afford it, the district has a new program to help. mayor muriel bowser just launched a new voucher program to get a free private security camera system. you either have to rent or own property in the district and receive public assistance from one of five
