similar to lasik with some big advantages. dr. john torres is here to tell us how it works. i had lasik done about 18 years ago. how is this different? >> the way it's different is it's essentially a smaller procedure and that's the big thing about this whole procedure, this whole surgery. it's called smile which stands for small incision and that's a huge name for basically saying they make a small incision in the cornea and pull out part of that cornea which flattens down which let's people see better. that's different than lasik that puts a flap in there. this gets around those issues and it's mainly for people that have conditions like dry eye where they can't get lasik or they have issues where they might be doing sports or other things where they could get hit in the eye and lasik could cause problems. this procedure, just fda approved and just now commercially available is being done in a few places around the country. it's probably going to expand

approved for those who are nearsighted and do not have a stigmatism. but the doctors say they think it'll be approved for more people very shortly and that will be expanded and opened up to more. "nbc nightly news" with lester holt we'll actually see a patient, talk to tina who had the surgery done and had fantastic results from it. >> so, doctor, relief from dry eye is one of the advantages. what are some of the others and what are the disadvantages of this particular procedure? >> so some of the other advantages are that you get a quicker more -- quicker healing. it takes a couple weeks to fully heal. once it heels it gets around some of those issues that have the halo and glare that people complain about. for people that are involved in sports, the opthalmologist are saying this is a better procedure because if you do get hit in the eye with something, that flap has the potential to come loose. with this procedure that's not going to happen. if people have thin corneas this is another procedure they want to look at.
4:52 pm
is basically one procedure they have among many and now the smile procedure that they can pick and choose which one works best for the patient and that way the patient's getting the best treatment for them. >> quick question, how much does it cost compared to lasik? >> and that's the big question everybody has right now. it's not covered by insurance much like lasik because it's an elected procedure. the doctors are saying it's around 3 to $5,000 per eye which is similar to what happened when lasik first came out. they expect it to drop in price overtime as more of these procedures are being done and this is one of those things that over the next few years, i think you'll see a lot more doctors doing it. internationally it's been done since 2009, tens of thousands of people have had this surgery with fantastic results. >> all right. thank you very much. it's great insight. great news for folks -- >> like us. >> maybe ready to give up the contacts. you can learn a lot more about this new eye procedure as he mentioned tonight on "nbc nightly news" at 7:00. that's coming up right aft
