gun charges for a guest at washington's trump hotel. i'm jim handly. >> and i'm wendy rieger. he's a 43 old man from pennsylvania. police say he had an assault rifle, a handgun, 90 rounds of ammo and they're crediting an out of state tip for leading them to him. >> mark segraves is downtown for us where it is still unclear what he planned to do with those weapons. mark? >> reporter: good evening. a lot of unanswered questions but here's what we can tell you. this is one of those cases of see something, say something. in this case two different people, people who didn't know one another who were hundreds of miles apart who had nothing in common except they had both come in contact with the suspect. >> i want to thank the tipster who came forward in the state of pennsylvania and notified authorities. we say it all the time, the best way to prevent a disaster is when you see s

something. >> reporter: d.c. police chief was quick to point out that there was a peaceful resolution to this incident because the tipster came forward. that tipster called pennsylvania state police about midnight saying 43-year-old brian moles of pennsylvania was in d.c. and was armed. nbc news has learned that tipster told police there was concern about moles estate of mind. law enforcement also tell nbc news at the same time that tip came in from pennsylvania, moles was checking in to the trump hotel and it told a hotel employee he had guns in his car. that employee alerted hotel security who called the secret service. in a statement the hotel tells news4, we take the safety and security of our guests very seriously this morning the authorities arrested a guest who was behaving suspiciously. and in a separate statement, the secret service tells news4 they received information from a concerned citizen and trump international hotel security staff.

coming to the district of columbia armed with those weapons, coming into this area, it's of serious concern to this police department. it doesn't have a really good reason for being here. >> reporter: now regardless of whether those guns were legally purchased in pennsylvania or not, it was illegal for him to bring them into the district of columbia which has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation. outside the trump hotel, back to you. >> thank you. we have a developing story now that involves the fbi looking for this guy. they say he had inappropriate sexual contact with a minor at arlington cemetery during the wreath laying ceremony on memorial day. investigators say the suspect was standing in a crowd of people and started inappropriately touching the girl who he did not know. if you can identify the man in this picture you're asked to contact the fbi. a

heading to prison for 13 years for causing the death of his baby girl. the nine-month-old died back in october of 2014 after she was rushed to children's hospital, but as northern virginia julie carrie reports now the defendant's family still firmly believes he's innocent. she joins us live from leesburg with more on today's emotional hearing. julie. >> reporter: people approaching the court house today probably noticed these flyers posted throughout downtown leesberg. they were put up the family by the little girl. they believe he's been wrongly convicted of causing his baby girl's death. this picture on the poster supporting shows him kissing his little girl but at trial medical experts testified the baby died from blunt force trauma to the head and a jury decided alice was responsible. his family sees it differently. >> my brother was always

for devon. >> he would never hurt that baby. he carried that baby around like she was a piece of jewel. >> reporter: that's the view of ellis's sister and aunt. she was primarily in the care of her mother before she was dropped off one october day to spend time with her dad. the baby seemed listlessly and after her father laid her down way bottle she began to choke. >> she started spitting up milk. my brother tried to resuscitate that baby. he even drove her there and flown in the helicopter. >> baby devon died a few days later at children's hospital. later interrogated by police, he dropped the baby on the bathroom floor but prosecutors say even that would not have caused her severe injuries. >> the number of different injuries that she had the retinal hemorrhaging, the subdo you remember al hemorrhaging, the broken ribs, it couldn't have all happened from a simple dropped. >> r

convicted ellis in march, of felony hospital they recommended the 13 year sentence. the judge agreed telling him i don't know if we're ever going to hear the real story. that's up to you. and ellis had his chance to make a statement, he told the judge, quote, i've always been a good father to my kid. i've never been a hurtful person. i will do my best to rehabilitate myself. ellis's family is hoping to raise enough money to appeal his conviction. back to you now in the studio. >> thank you. saying a final good-bye to a popular high school football player from maryland. funeral services held today for norman white. his friends, his family, his classmates celebrating his life at the first baptist church. white was just 17. he died last week after losing control of his car, crashing into a tree. he was on his way home fm

>> now to a major drug bust on the eastern shore this evening. 18 people are facing felony charges accused in an opioid ring. police showed off some of the drugs here, cash too, firearms that they recovered as part of their sting. investigators tell us the group distributed large amounts of opioids, marijuana and cocaine throughout maryland and delaware. we're told the arrest came as part of a six week effort by law enforcement throughout maryland. >> scott macfarlane, new developments on a deadly truck bombing in kabul, afghanistan. the white house said president trump has spoken with the president of afghanistan about the attack and did so early morning. that blast killed 90 people and wounded hundreds of others and says 11 u.s. citizen contractors were injured but those people are all expected to be okay. this happened in kabul's heavily guarded diplomatic corner close

the germany embassy suffered the most serious damage and still not clear how the bomber was able to get into that secure zone and so close to those embassies. also not clear who was behind the attack but investigators are honing in on isis. this was one of the worst attacks in afghanistan since the draw down of u.s. forces in 2014. thank you, scott. the white house is not responding to a number of reports that suggest president trump may be planning to pull out of the paris climate accord. the president tweeted earlier this week that he will make an announcement in the next few days but sources tell nbc news trump is leaning towards an exit. something he talked about at length on the campaign trail. at this point it appears no official decision is made. so what exactly does that paris agreement do? 195 countries initially signed on and to date 147 countries have ratified this deal. the goal, to keep global temperes

we'll continue to keep a close eye on these storms. doug's going to have your forecast for the weekend, more storms in the forecast coming up. scott macfarlane at the live desk. u.s. secret service announces the arrest of somebody who tried to jump the bike rack security gates near the white house a few years ago the secret service installed some bike racks before the main white house fence to deter fence jumpers. you can be arrested for jumping the bike rack now and at 4:30 p.m., somebody tried to do that and was arrested. there have been a series of arrests for both fence jumpings and bike rack jumpings as secret service tries to protect the white house. at the live deck, i'm scott macfarlane. >> thank you. police say this is surveillance video of the person who sexually assaulted a woman in arlington. chris gordon is live in that community. still scared weeks later. what are the authorities telling people about that attack? >> reporter: wendy, the people who live here

arlington are still afraid and on edge more than three weeks after the attack. the police say despite their efforts, investigators have not been able to identify the man captured on that surveillance video. the man they say committed this crime. annie duffy thinks about the unsolved sex assault as she takes her daily walk past the atrium. being a neighbor what's your reaction. >> it was very scary to hear this news. it's not something that you think happens ever especially right across the street from you in this neighborhood. >> reporter: he used to live in the atrium now he lives across the street. his four scrut cameras were checked by police who were trying to confirm a report that the suspect was watching the atrium before the attack. >> he was looking in here for more than one hour, that's what the police would be. >> reporter: arlington county police want you to take a

the man they say is the suspect in the sex assault case the morning of may 7th. first he tries to enter a building at 1999 wilson boulevard. then he came to the atrium on key boulevard. he knocked on doors claiming he was a maintenance worker. when one woman opened her door he sexually assaulted her and then fled. the surveillance video in the atrium's elevator shows his face as he looked right into the camera. he became anxious as police responded to neighbor's calls reporting loud noises. police say the suspect is then seen fleeing from the back of the building after the attack. arlington county police say something seemingly as insignificant as his backpack could provide a break in this case. >> he is carrying a blue underarmour backpack. if you know an individual that meets that description who is known to carry that backpack please report that

got hit hard yesterday. this storm is not as strong as yesterday's for sure but we do expect it to continue off to the east. i-95 will continue to be a mess. as we widen out here, you have one boundary here, one little finger of moisture moving on through, another one back to the west. we're going to watch this so even when this one's through, we're not done quite yet. i think the severe threat will be out of here by around the 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 around. it's right on through the d.c. metro area. we get a break around 8:00. a couple more showers developing with that next line around 11:00. these would just be showers, not thunderstorms. so i think we'll be okay. by tomorrow morning we're weighing up to some really nice conditions. tomorrow's forecast looking good. your storm impacts tonight. high winds. watch out for hail. very heavy rainfall. that will impact that evening commute.

improve my understanding of the challenges. >> reporter: as lieutenant governor of maryland, brown championed legislation to protect women of domestic violence and he's introducing some of that same legislation federally. he's also gearing up to fight for the renewal of the violence against womens act. >> we're making some gains but the challenge is enormous and we've got a very high percentage in prince george's county, so as lieutenant governor, i did a lot of work on domestic violence. as a member of congress i'm not walking away from the issue. >> reporter: prince george's county there were more homicides due to domestic violence than anywhere in maryland last year. >> because he had this round table discussion, it makes a difference. >> reporter: these discussions can literally save lives. >> when the congressmen and people in high places do speak out about their things and we're hearing those things on the news, it makes us feel more safe. >> reporter: the congressman said he learned a lot from today's discussion and will use this to build a foundation to not only expand domestic

also make sure that there's continued funding for them as well. i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> for the second time in recent weeks we're learning about a case involving funny money in our area. the manager of a wa with a says over the holiday weekend two people came in and asked for change for a $100 bill. this was movie money. money that's used in film. this is similar to that scam we saw earlier this month in maryland. police released images of the two people involved in this case. they're hoping someone will recognize them. virginia governor terry mccullough says he wanted to send a message when he pardoned an undocumented woman in hopes of avoiding deportation. a group of people rallied in sport of that woman. she'd been stopped for a minor traffic violation years ago on wtop's ask the governor, medical culla said current policies are taking a toll

well, it happened last night and it's happening again across our region. strong storms and that's why we're still in red mode. >> it seems like we've had a lot of thunderstorms moving through the area. >> i continue to try to cut my grass and wet grass is not good for a lawn mower. this is our rusten camera looking back toward the east now. now we're looking at it now moving out of the reston area over towards tyson's corner. right over ba thez da right now. you can see that line into towards laurel and fred rikzburg area. it loss its lightning. these storms will pulse up and then pulse back down to become very strong and weak and continue to do that. this is strengthening again right around the kensington region near

right on around just to the south of olny. the district also seeing the rain now and then more rain down to the south, a few embedded areas of thunder but the main storm is well to the north of washington but still right along the beltway. 95 going to be a mess this evening and all of this activity will continue to move off toward the east as it does so, we're tracking not just this area but back to the west, some more showers. these could come through overnight tonight, maybe around the 11:00 hour. as we look towards what we can see temperatures of 78 degrees, winds out of the south at 9 miles an hour, tomorrow a little bit different. amelia is here with some sunshine. >> absolutely. i think we've had quite a few forecasts lately where it's hair pulling because we have memorial day weekend that wasn't picture perfect. tomorrow is just perfection. sunshine from start to finish. low humidity. we start off really comfortable at 65 degrees. 80 degrees will be our high

the members of congress who are leading this investigation say they had issued these subpoenas to compel certain people to testify and to obtain personal documents and business records. we've learned that three of the subpoenas were issued as part of the so-called unmasking investigation. that's looking to get information on some of the requests made by former national security advisor susan rice, former cia director john brennan and former united nations ambassador is a man that power. here at the live desk i'm chris launch. >> and jetblue is testing out facial recognition software on some of its flights this summer. passengers who opt in will be able to step up to a kiosk and get their picture taken and that photo connects to custom and border protection. if it matches your passport, you'll be cleared to board. this pilot program kicks off tomorrow. right now it's only available on flights from boston to

you still have to bring your passport. >> jetblue passengers had quite the scare when a laptop caught on fire aboard their plane. susan hogan is here now with the story and what details the airlines are doing now to combat these fires. >> this incident is just the latest in a series of laptops, tablets and cell phones catching fire. the federal government is even considering a ban on laptops, on all flights to and from the united states. the jetblue flight from new york to san francisco was forced to land in michigan last night after a lithium battery in a passenger's laptop caught fire. passengers realized of course something was not quite right when the backpack started smoking. >> it was pretty scary to see smoke on the plane we're at 35,000 feet and all of a sudden you hear an announcement and we look back in row 25 and we saw everybody

coming around. >> pretty scary. the crew was able to put the fire out before the plane landed and no one was injured. more airlines are now installing fire containment bags and heat resistant gloves to their planes. alaska airlines was the first to add them. virgin and delta also have the bags on their flights. southwest added the kids to all planes earlier this year. jetblue tells news4 they follow the exfin kwishing procedure recommended by the international civil aviation organization that includes putting the device in a trash container filled with water. >> my goodness. thank you, susan. they're calling it a mission to touch the sun. next year nasa launches a probe that will get closer to our sun than any man made object ever. this probe will pass within 4 million miles of the sun's surface. that area that's known as the corona. that may sound far away b

pet owners in arlington started calling news4 concerned their going to lose a popular spot to walk their dogs. >> the county may soon decide to reduce the size of the dog park. our reporter has more. >> reporter: take a look at the size of this dog park, about 100,000 square feet. it really goes as far as the camera can see and that's exactly what dog owners and dog walkers love about it. so any talk of reducing the size of this place, well, that doesn't go over too well. it's where they gather, hang out and get to know one another. even mid-workday you'll find people and their canines stolling through, playing fetch and living their mark on others with mud. i hope that's mud. do you see what brady here did to me but it's okay because look how cute he is.

thunderstorm warning it. that warning lasted until 6:30. you can see that warning in the yellow. eastern montgomery county, southern howard county, extreme northern portions of anne arundel, this storm you can see a lot of lightning associated with it. we've seen it pulse up and down. very strong around the reston area. we saw that hail in pa tomorrow mac and looking at hail closer towards the coalsville area. notice the line. you can see that line extending down from baltimore all the way down to d.c., right on down i-95. always a mess this time of day. even more of a mess with the rain. i want to show you what's happening right through in eastern montgomery county. taking the lightning off here, you can see it right near the intercounty connecter. some very heavily rain right around laurel is where we're seeing the heaviest. only starting to pull away from your area. farther out you can see this is one little area of rain that we've got coming through.
