weapon and ammunition in his car. today he faced a judge for the second time in as many days, but he's not locked up. instead, he's packing up and heading south. all this as new details about the security scare come to live. mark segraves joins us live with the reason behind the release and, mark, what happens next? >> reporter: yeah, good evening, leon. you said the chief of police the other day said we averted disaster by putting him behind bars. yesterday a federal prosecutor said he was a grave risk to the public safety if he were to be released. but today that same prosecutor, a federal judge and defense attorney all agreed it was safe to release bryan moles and he's not going back home in pennsylvania, he's going to atlanta, georgia to live with a friend. but a judge put conditions on his release. he had to seek a mental evaluation and mental health treatment once in atlanta next

week. he's also prohinted from having any guns and has to sur retur d returned -- surrender the guns he still has in pennsylvania. >> reporter: moles is now facing one federal charge of illegally possessing a gun and one local charge of illegally transporting a gun. the d.c. judge released moles late thursday evening on his promise to return to federal court friday afternoon. >> do you have a message for your family back at home? >> i love them. >> reporter: prosecutors had argued that moles was a danger to the public, based on information provided by an acquaintance of moles who told police the 14-year navy vet and physician had left voice mails saying he was traveling to d.c. from his home in pennsylvania and he had guns. court documents showed moles told the acquaintance he would stay in d.c. until he met president trump. moles called himself a refugee

pharmacy. according to prosecutors. mold told the acquaintance his car looked like timothy mcvay and eric rudolph were going camping, a renge to two domestic terrorists. and moles withdrew $10,000 from his bank account, leaving only $4.19. 4/19 is the date of the oklahoma city bombing. those were enough red flags for the secret service to question him in his room at the trump hotel and arrest him after he admitted to police he had a glock handgun, an ar-15 assault rifle and 90 rounds of ammo in his car. moles now faces 11 years in prison on those charges. he will be back here in d.c. for his next court appearance later this month. at u.s. district court, mark segraves, news4. i'm chris lawrence here at the live desk where we're learning new information about the investigation into russia and the trump campaign. the associated press reports, it's

trump campaign chairman paul manafort, and it may also look into what role attorney general jeff sessions and his deputy a.g. played in the firing of fbi director james comey. this moves indicates that robert mueller is assuming a broad mandate as special counsel and it comes days before comey heads to capitol hill to testify in front of the senate intelligence committee. >> thank you, chris. now to vladimir putin in his own words. nbc's megyn kelly questioned putin today about allegations that he interfered with our presidential election. blayne alexander is live at the white house now with putin's response. >> the russian president answered some very direct questions about that wide-reaching and ongoing investigation back here at home. and as you may imagine, he'd had a lot to say. the white house today taking no questions on the ongoing russia investigation. >> we're focused on the president's agenda. >> reporter: but in russia, a

>> reporter: also under scrutiny for his meeting with kushner, russian banker sergey gorkov who refused to answer questions from nbc's keir simmons. in st. petersburg today, plenty of talk, yielding only more questions around the russia investigation here at home. and nbc's megyn kelly just sat down for an exclusive interview, a one-on-one interview with vladimir putin. that is coming up next on "nbc nightly news" just after this broadcast. wendy? >> thank you, blayne. well, along with world leaders, a number much citiof ce responded to the president's decision to pull out of the paris agreement. many are planning to move forward with their plans to curb greenhouse gas emissions. district officials believe that climate change can pods a real threat here. >> climate change is going to disproportionately impact our impact that have the least resources to deal with it. so if

this? >> reporter: well, d.c. police, metro transit police and ddot are all investigating the cause of this accident. ever since street cars started running along h street in northeast, there have been critics that called the design dangerous. take a look why. they say the tracks run too close to parked cars. today a car leaving a spot may have caused this street car to hit the metro bus. this passenger wore a neck brace as she was accompanied off the bus. belinda king hobbled off in pain. she says the crash caused her to hit a rail on the same side where she had a total hip replacement. >> when it hit, we just flew. didn't no one coming until just now. so we all going to the hospital. >> reporter: there is no rear window on the metro bus. for passengers, the crash came as a total shock. >> i was sitting on the back of the bus, all of a sudden i felt a hard bump. >> reporter: d.c. f a

crews received an emergency call at 11:00 a.m., reporting a d.c. street car had hit the back of a metro bus injuring ten passengers on the bus. >> we called our mass casualty bus, considering the number of people that were involved, and we transported them to local hospitals. >> there was a loud crash. >> reporter: johnny bay was standing outside the metro pcs store he manages and saw the accident right across the street. >> so i saw the street car coming up. and i don't think he saw the bus, because he ran streit into the back of -- straight into the back of it. and everybody on the bus goes jerking, jerking, like that. >> reporter: the metro bus passed through the intersection at 11th and h as the street car followed behind. >> do you know who had the light? >> definitely the street car had the light, but the metro bus had stopped. and i think there was a car coming out of a parking spot here and maybe the street car

>> reporter: metro reports that the injuries to the passengers on the bus were minor, that we are told by ddot that there were no passengers on the street car at the time of the accident. the driver suffered minor injuries, was taken to a hospital, and tested for blood -- tested for drugs and alcohol as is standard procedure in any public transit accident. that's the latest live in northeast, washington. back to you. >> thank you, chris. over in virginia, an amtrak train got stuck on the tracks after it collided with a trailer. this was this morning in culpeper. this is video from chopper4. crews used heavy machinery to clear up the mess. we're told the truck was towing that trailer when it happened. this train runs from new orleans to new york city. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes is asking

investigation into the fake flyers flaplastered all over several neighborhoods. they appear to have the official letter head of u.s. immigration and customs enforcement. they call on people to deport undocumented immigrants. i.c.e. says the flyers are fake. norton wants the federal government to investigate to find out who's responsible. members of the house committee on veterans affairs are asking the va inspector general to look into what we told you yesterday. a veteran's body went undiscovered for more than a day in the va parking lot here in d.c. >> his family said the veteran never returned home from a treatment session two weeks ago. they say they called the center to try to get help and to get a search for the man. for 36 hours,

found him. until his sister drove to the medical center, searched the parking lot and found the man's body in his car in that parking lot. just outside the entrance. the man's death was confirmed by a police report and multiple sources speaking with the news4 i-team and the new head of the medical center said the agency there is investigating what might have gone wrong. >> they met with the veteran's sister that evening, expressed our condolences on that. >> reporter: and the veterans affairs committee has launched its own investigation into the death. the d.c. va medical center already under scrutiny. a scathing audit was released last month saying the medical center suffered supply shortages and was using expired supplies during procedures, putting patient safety at risk. in the scott macfarlane. >> to see his original story or to send in a tip, visit the nbc washington app and click invest

obvious. i spoke with the former ambassador on russia mike mcfall who is a putin whisperer. what is putin saying, what does he mean in something like this. putin is being very careful in what he denied. saying all you have is allegations, you don't have facts. but the day before, he admits, maybe russian patriots, but it was never done on a government level. this is putin's way of almost bragging about it, is the way mcfall interpreted it. of saying, yeah, that's right. look at all the chaos i've sewn. look at what i was able to pull off, and it was almost a little bit of, he viewed it as his way of matchchismo, of showing off. he gave no help to donald trump in that respect. all he did was add more smoke, while at the same time, giving trump no -- didn't clear any room for him. makes trump's problems wor

you're watching news4 at 6:00. and first at 6:30, the local lgbtq community worried after the murder of a young man in his apartment. >> that's right. police made this discovery earlier this week. the man was stabbed to death. the killer is still out there. >> tracee wilkins is live with what activists are doing to ease fears and to bring the killer to justice. tracee? >> reporter: they say they're specifically concerned about when it happened. that's why they wanted to be a part of helping in this investigation. >> he was out like a lot of us were, enjoying the different cultural events and club events and bars. >> reporter: devin barrington ward said after black gay pride weekend, no one could reach matt

murren. then the flnews broke. >> it was very sad, we learned of matt's murder. >> reporter: prince george's county police are looking for a killer. 26-year-old matt minkens-murrey was discovered murdered in his apartment tuesday in hyattsville. so far, no suspects have been identified. >> the person who did this is still at large. they could be engaging with community members right now as we speak. >> reporter: devin barrington ward is president of impulse group, focused on hiv aids. tomorrow they'll hold a vigil in his honor. >> we'll create a space for community members to grieve appropriately, to mourn, to try, to laugh, all those things that come along when you lose a friend. >> prince george's county police are not calling matt's murder a hate crime, but devin said it's important the message is sent to the community and police that those who

black bowie state university student was murdered on campus last month by a white student. the issue of hate has dominated the headlines. there have also been cases involving nooses at the national museum of african american history and culture, at american university and also the university of maryland. we had dr. fauntroy in our studio and asked him about the public responses to these cases and whether or not responding fuels the bad behavior. fauntroy believes we have to spnld or we risk normalizing that kind of behavior. >> there are certain symbols in american history that are so strong and so powerful that when they are trafficked in the way they have been recently, we have to say something and we have to be vigilant about it. >> he says that more universities need to adopt zero tolerance policies on hate and bias related incidents. dozens of new american citizens participated in a special celebration at

you can call it a high tech takedown. deputies in stafford county are using a drone to search for a suspected gunman. it's becoming a growing asset for law enforcement. as our bureau reporter david culver reports, it's also raising some privacy concern. >> reporter: you're looking at thermal images from thursday

manhunt. sheriff's deputies combing the western part of the county for this man, jeffrey owens. a caller reported he opened fire on a car and then took off into the woods. so the sheriff's office launched into the sky and spotted their guy. certainly you have more condensed areas within stafford county and a lot of land that looks like this. a lot of open, rural space. in fact, this is where thursday's manhunt ended. just think of it, trying to send a bunch of ground units to search all of this. instead, the county had eyes above. >> it's absolutely a game-changer. >> reporter: lieutenant ben oversees special operations, which now includes four drones. >> these are the front steps to our courthouse. if something were occurring here, safety related, we could deploy this technology and gain information about what is happening. >> reporter: the unmanned aircraft system as they call it, can give deputies a clear sight from a safe distance. >> it's
