guthrie live from washington d.c. welcome to this special edition of "today" on a thursday morning. glad you're with us. it's a big day. i'm here on capitol hill. matt, you're back in studio 1-a and the stage is set for consequential testimony. >> yeah. this is the political version of must-see tv. millions of ppl going to stop what they're doing and watch from their home or workplace. what does it take to be one of the lucky ones to get a seat in the hearing room. >> you have to be an early riser. i can show you a live shot. you can see people are already there. it will be filled with lawmakers, with staff, with a lot of reporters, as you might expect, but also some spectators willing to wait in line. let's take you through what we think will be happeni. 10 a.m. eastern it gets underway. james comey will begin his testimony before the senate intelligence committee. he's going to begin by reading an o

appearance yesterday. in the statement he recalled one on one conversations with the president. he details five of them. three meetings and two phone calls between january and may. >> according to comey those conversations focussed on the investigation into possible russian interference in the 2016 election. he considered the interactions, everything from very awkward to inappropriate. following the openg remarks, comey will face two rounds of questions from a panel of eight republicans, six democrats and one independent. >> we have every aspect of today's hearing covered for you. we'll be talking exclusively to some of the lawmakers questioning mr. comey including senator harris. let us start can hallie jackson. with more on what we're learning from comey's opening statement. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this room that i'm

really is the centeofhe politil iv right now. this is what it's all going to come down to. where james comey will be seated and we're already getting a preview of what he's going to say in the opening statement. it's questions coming from senators that could reveal new information as the still photographerers phph get set up. e-mailing out talking points overnight to try to bat back some of the criticism the president is expected to get, particularly from democrats on this committee. some of this testimony james comey has revealed so far does contradict with the president said publicly. all of it setting up a kind of he said he said show down. not even james comey could wait until today to deliver his testimony. asking the senate intelligence committee to release his opening statement early. in vivid detail, the former fbi director outlines his

with the president who fired him. including the first, january 6th, at trump tower. it's where he says he told donald trump we did not have an open counterintelligence case on him, comey writes. i offered that assurance. the president pointing to that as validation. his outside counsel saying president trump is pleased comey publicly confirmed the president was not under any investigation in any russian probe. adding the president feels completely and totally vindicated. gop allies point out comey acknowledges the president said it would be good to find out if satellite associates did something wrong. still, other parts of comey's statement contradict what the president said publicly like when comey describes a meeting the day after then national security adviser michael flynn resigned. he writes the president began by saying i want to talk about mike flynn, adding later, he's a good guy. i hope you can let this go. >> did you at

james comey in any way, shape, or form to close or back down the investigation into michael flynn? >> no. no. next question. >> reporter: then a dinner in late january. comey says the pump called him with the invitation. here's what the president told lester holt. >> it was arranged and he wanted to stay on as the fbi head. at this dinner another crucial moment. the president said i need loyalty. i expect loyalty according to comey who writes, i didn't move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed. we simply looked at each other in silence. later he says he told the president, you will always get honesty from me. >> is it appropriate for the president so ask loyalty from the fbi director. >> obviously i don't think that is. the deposition is treated independently. this crosses that. >> do you think james comey is

>> reporter: anticipation for today's testimony at a high. overlight former director of national intelligence weighing in on the significance of the russia controversy. >> i have to say i think you compare the two, that water gate pales, really, in my view, compared to what we're confronting now. >> comey's testimo hours on capitol hill which started wednesday when the top intelligence officials faced questions. >> i do not recall ever feeling pressured to do so. >> i have never felt pressure to intervene or interfere in any way. >> reporter: when asked to share more? they declined. >> i'm not going to discuss the specifics of conversations with the president of the united states. >> i'm not going to answer any questions. >> it's inappropriate for me to share that with the public. >> reporter: the co

statement is true, is there a sufficient case for obstruction of justice. >> there is no question we have to get to the truth of what's going on. there are more questions to ask. the written statement validates some of the reports that we've been hearing that have led us to this point of even questioning whether there's been obstruction of justice. he outlines clearly there have been conversations initiated by the president that seem to be intended to interfere with the investigation. his leer in terms of his written statement vates he was asked to take a loyalty oath. when i think about that, i was a district attorney of san francisco, the attorney general of california, and now a united states senator. i've taken the oath many times. the oath was to the constitution of the united states, not an individual. it's inappropriate. >> on the other hand thera aspects of the statement that do corroborate what trump said. the president said i was

director comey that i was not personally under investigation. you were asked about this on an interview. no you said as a prosecutor, you would have never talked to someone who may have been in the zone of investigation and tell them they're not someone we're not looking at. that doesn't happen. >> it happened. >> you're right. at least it is inappropriate, but what we'll see today is we're going to get mo facts and more information and see what's there in terms of what should be the next step for the united states senate and any other investigator look agent this matter. >> did you think the comey letter would be more of a smoking gun than what you see? >> i didn't have any expectations. i think nothing that any of us could have expected when we think about the normal goings on of a president of the united states or a criminal investigation. but i will say that as we go forward, it is very important that we get to the heart of

matter and get to the ut what happed th'sosimrtthing. this is a proportion about drama, and everyone is watching it, but this is not a television show. this is about the office of the president of the united states. and it is critical that we find out what is going on, what is happening so we can get to the truth and move on. >> some people say, look, you look at these facts. if you put them in the light most favorable to the president. this is somebody who came in and maybe did not fully grasp that it's not appropriate, for example, so say, hey, do you need to get into this investigation or could you say publicly that i'm not under investigation, the thing you've told me privately? why is it not a reasonable interpretation? why is that not -- to give him the benefit of the doubt -- why is that not credible? >> when you take the oath to be the president of the united states, the american public has a right to expect that you know better. period. >> wh t

knows how a weave a tale. i think one of the things everybody needs to take a breath is there's another thing about james comey. he doesn't put it all out there at first. i have a feeling this is an appetizer as far as he's concerned. and that there is -- there's three interactions he did not talk about at all or detail at all. those he had conversations we're missing three of. it's going to be interesting to hear the stories behind those three. >> jeremy, you're a lawyer. do you consider this document standing alone sufficient for obstruction of justice? >> what struck me is the president made james comey reaudition for his job. he serves for ten years to avoid the situation. the president was holding a threat over his head saying if you don't, pledge loyalty to me. if you don't shut down flynn or lift the cloud, i'll fire you, and he made good. i think there's a reanae basis to procedure.

involved in the comey fin what was discussed. that's where i think the white house could exert executive privilege to shut down those witnesses. >> we'll see. there's a lot more to come. chuck, you picked up on something. there's a point where comey says the president said, look, if there was some satellite person, someone in my orbit, a staffer who did something wrong with regard to russia, that would be good to know. it comes very close to acknowledging that perhs something did go on, he just wants to make clear he didn't do it. >> there have been by some investigating, one with of the assumptions is trump himself would not have been told the details, would not have been told much other than you don't want to know where we got that information or that sort of mind set, and then here is now the president almost confirming his own suspicion on that at a minimum. that, to me, is striking. there's a number of questions if i were a senator up there that you suddenly

military plane from meyanmar tht a disappeared. kelly has that story. >> reporter: good morning. they think they found the wreckage of the plane that disappeared with 120 peopl soldiers, their families, including 15 children on board. this happened off the southern coast of myanmar. the plane was heading north when it vanished. the aircraft, a chinese made transport plane. it took off wednesday afternoon local time. lost contact 29 minutes into flight while at cruising altitude over open water. the military sent out helicopters and search planes. they say they have spotted several bodies including a woman and a child along with some debris. life jackets and luggage offshore. no reports of a may day call. searchers are still hoping to find survivors.

another big story we're following. a new court appearance for reality winner. she is the 25-year-old nsa contractor accused of leaking a highly classified document about russia's election mettling into an online magazine. gabe gutierrez is at the courthouse. >> reporter: good morning. the government says reality winner admitted to leaking classified information, but the lawyer says he hasn't seen the proof. her family hopes she'll be released on bail while she fights the charges. the first leaker of president trump's administration. reality winner says she plans to plead not. >> i think the issue is why the government has put so much effort and resources into prosecuting a low level employee as opposed to was russia involved in an attempt to interfere with our election. >> reporter: winner admitted to

revealing russian intelgen targeted local election officials and a company that provided software. the 25-year-old yoga instructor was an air force vet that was a contractor at a military base. >> she would not jeopardize anybody's safety. she would not. i can tell you that for certainty. >> reporter: the whi h says any disclosure of classified information cou threaten national security. if she's convicted of violating the espionage act, winner could face up to ten years in prison. >> all right. thank you very much. a lot of people up late last night because of a big game. the golden state warriors now a win away from the championship after knocking off the cleveland cavaliers. final was 118-113. game three of the nba finals. the warriors ended the game on an 11-0 scoring run.

to swear you both into the senate. i want to know based on what you read in the opening statement what question do you most want to ask james comey today? >> he met with president obama and never took a note. he had that very first interaction with president-elect trump and couldn't wait to start typing up his report. he started working on it in the car. what happened at a gut level to just blow up any sense that donald trump was on the level or that this relationship was going to be anywhere close to normal that he couldn't wait l got back to the office to start typing up a report about the first interaction. >> what about you, ari? >> does jim comey think he was fired because of his resistance to all of the contacts described by president trump? >> for people who are still talking about possible obstruction of justice, that's where they put the period on the sentence. you've got the demand for lo

and get away from the flynn investigation. but it's when james comey does not agree with either of those things that he's fired. so does that complete the sentence? >> i think that's the question. savannah posed it earlier in the hour. what is obstruction? the short answer is it's not made of words. it's usually made of words plus action. and so jim comey could outline further today whether he thinks subsequent actions were punishment for his actions. >> if you're a trump supporter, you say here's my take. this is a guy who happened to be the president of the united states sticking up for a pal, mike flynn who had a bad day the day before. he was forced to resign. he's saying to james comey, can you do us a favor? can you back off? he's already gone through a tough time, and you could say this is a guy who is a businessman. donald trump. he's used to surrounding himself with l

he's doing here, he's demanding loyalty from a guy who is in a key job. it might beicy. it might be awkward. it might be unappropriate, but it's not illegal. >> it may be, and listen, this is where the white house is landed. they've landed on the stupidity difference. he just didn't understand that the fbi is an independent law enforcement agency. and he was doing what you just described. this is where they landed. this is where they landed on foreign policy. he just didn't understand that you don't blow the cover of undercover agents. we didn't give him the intel. he didn't understand it's inappropriate to ask your intel chief to act as arms of your press operation. this is where they're going to have problems over a over again. >> let me play you something. >> did you at any time urge james comey in any way, shape, or form to close or back down the investigation into michael flynn? and also -- >>

next question. >> you've read the seven-page opening statement from james comey. if he's telling the truth, can the president be telling the truth? >> no. i don't think so. the this is an area where there was a clear assertion by jim comey. he's under oath. that goes to the problem with the so-called stupidity defense. is the defense that you did these things and didn't know what they were doing, or that you didn't do them. that's different if you were misleading the public and potentially investigative bodies. the president has lot of power. the question is if he went beyond the power, and jim comey's testimony might shed light on that. >> thank you both. i know you'll be watching. let's get another check of the beththe weatherro dylan. >> we have wild video out of north dakota yesterday y. we saw a wicked tornado on the ground. it's picking up a lot of dirt and debris off the ground. no injuries

at the hearing. >> yeah. usually witnesses will release an opening statement, but i usually comes the morning of, maybe an hour before. this was unusual in that it came the day before. it was clear director comey wanted people to look at this and digest a complex narrative and give a hint to the intelligence committe members of questions he may be asked. we'll see what happens. it could be the most pivotal day in the russia investigation. james comey testifying before the senate intelligence committee. we already know some of what he's going to say because of that statement. let's go to hallie jackson. good morning to you, again. >> reporter: good morng. right n the chairs are empty. you know that every seat in here will be filled in a couple of hours. no seat as important as this one where james comey is going to be sitting as he looks straight ahead at the senators asking him questions. i snapped a picture of that a couple minutes ago. this is james comey's view, what i g

the questions you talked about with matt and hoda will be crucial in providing perhaps new information about the president's actions. all of it the testimony from the director setting up a he said he said showdown. james comey already offering a preview of what's to come. >> his statement reads more like a tom clancy novel. >> reporter: in his opening statement, he describes telling the president-elect in january, we did not have an open counterintelligence cason him. i offered that assurance. the president pointing to that as validation of what he's been saying. >> he said you are not under investigation. >> reporter: his outside counsel writing the president feels completely and totally vindicated but comey appears to contradict the president like when he described the discussion about former national security adviser michael flynn.

saying i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting flynn go. he is a good guy. here's what the president said last month. >> did you at any time urge former fbi director james comey in any way, shape, or form to back down into the investigation into michael flynn -- >> no. no. next question. >> reporter: comey describes another crucial mome at a dinner in january. the president said i need loyalty. i expect loyalty according to comey. who writes i didn't move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed. we simply looked at each other in silence. >> is it appropriate for the president to ask for a question of loyalty for the fbi direction? >> obviously, i don't think that is. fbi directors are supposed to be independent. that's something that very critical. >> reporter: today's testimony by comey comes one day after the president announced his intelligence to nominate

officials close to the kremlin, and they effectively are presenting president trump as a victim as someone who is being attacked by the so-called deep state, by the cia, the fbi, the bureaucracy because the president wants to have better relations, so the system as its described here, doesn't want him to do that. the putin administration, the kremlin has repeatedly denied it tried to place sympathetic individuals in the whiteou close toherede h denied that it tried to hack the election, but as you've seen time and time again, whenever president putin does deny that there was hacking, even when he does it in a coy way, and i think there is a sense of satisfaction here on the streets that if, in fact, russia may have manipulated the american political process, that it's something that the russians should feel proud of. back to you. >> all right. richard engel, thank you. we're joined by

will get a chance to question james comey this morning. two members of the senate intelligence committee. senators. >> it's nice to have bipartisan cooperation this morning. you've read the comey state. do you think what he alleges is inappropriate conduct if what he says is true, for example, asking for a loyalty oath? >> it is inappropriate. it looks like trump is saying this to everybody. we know that from other cabinet officials. he made the statement he's treating comey the same way. >> do you believe comey? >> it sounds like something the president would say. comey said it felt awkward but didn't get close to saying it was criminal. >> do you think it's inappropriate? >> i don't thinkve thinks it wasn't inappropriate. it's something we wouldn't do. it's dos and don'ts. you don't really mess with y

intelligence. you don't mess with your law enforcement or your security details. >> that's step one, then. the next part is according to comey, the president saying i hope you can see clear to let this flynn matter go. up to interpretation what exactly he meant. is that inappropriate? >> i would think that did mr. comey anticipate or think that might lead toward his dismissal if he wasn't submissive? those types of things. i think in his testimony he thought he'd already been named for a ten-year term, and he was asked is this a job you want? do you want to stay on this job? there's a lot of questions in his mind, and if he thinks he was threatened. >> when you look at this, these facts and now we know how it ends in the sense that comey got fired. he was fired from a ten-year position, does this amount to obstruction of justice? >> a couple

no. comey comes back and says it was awkward and uncomfortable, especially february 14th in this conversation about michael flynn to say can we let this go? but he also at the same moment said he was not pressured to stop the russia investiti or pressured to back off anyone else. he felt like it was just about flynn, not about the rest, and comey states that. that's different. and i'm going to ask what happened after that? were there other conversations with other white house officials? >> comey has many statements in here that would in some way be beneficial to president trump. in fact, president trump says he feels vindicated by this statement. on the other hand, what comey describes is asking others to leave the room and having comey stay behind. doesn't that suggest to you some kind of consciousness on the part of the president that maybe this was not appropria behavior? >> i've been in a setting with a president before and he's asked people who leave so we could talk about different things. this pertaining to

virginia, how we coulhe wt virginiathgsf ator d fihat alarming. i think you asked the question to james about do you think that was obstruction of justice. it's not whether we think it. it's whether comey thought it was obstruction of justice. >> but he has to answer that. he had a ring side seat. did he feel that? he's the law. i'm not a lawyer. he's a lawyer. >> but if he were still fbi director, perhaps it would matter whether he felt it was obstruction of justice. but now it's in the hands of congress on these facts. >> we haven't gotten to those facts yet. >> i would tell you, again, he doesn't even get close to that in his written statement. he reaffirms i told the president three times you're not under investigation, never felt pressured to stop the russia investigation. he articulates the president says you've told me i'm not under investigation. if there's satellite individuals part of our county, continue moving forward. in fact, he encourages

move on any other investigation, but he seems to say clear my name because i'm not in this. >> do you agree with the president when he says it's a taxpayer funded charade? >> i don't. i think this is a t presenand t presidency. i think we have to get the facts. this is what this investigation is. let's go after the facts as they are and resolve the facts and move on, whichever way it goes. >> the facts though russia got involved more than ever before and intended to be involved and done more than before. with that, there's no question whatsoever on that. >> you're a republican. do you hope he gets through the hearing? >> i doesn't maer whether i hope he's going to. >> james -- at the end of the day, we have to sign off on a report by the facts presented. that the one committee that will sign off on the facts. no one is above the law. and no matter if it's the president or anyone in the administration, and not, i'm not going to sign off. we're going to get the facts. >> we'll go where the

even during such a serious trial, the comedian is never far from the surface. bill cosby finding time to joke around with security guards at the courthouse. back in the courtroom, andrea's mother took the stand describing phone calls confronting cosby. cosby through tears sheahe viewed him like her father. i was distraught that he drugged her. she was a healthy girl. he betrayed her. she also recorded a call. the audio played for the jury. cosby's own voice saying i would be willing to meet with you guys, lay out what i think is best, pay for the schooling. andrea claims cosby kruged and sexually assaulted her in his pennsylvania home in 2004. a charge he denies. during

defense suggested she misrepresented her relationship with cosby. an attorney focussed on two private dinners at his home. at one point asking you ha't told the officers you had wine and brandy and sat by a fire and put your legs near one another. the attorney saying you knew he was interested in you romantically. her replying no, ma'am. the defense team also pored over phone records, line by line, highlighting 53 calls she made to cosby after the alleged assault. the assistant da hit back revealing a pattern in the record. she often checked her voice mail right before calling cosby, suggesting she was returning his calls. with testimony done for the day, cosby made his slow walk out. alongside a film co-star who showed support for her long-time friend. >> the most important thing is to come and fd

on father's day, this is what he prefers. -- >> we do a lot of meat and a lot of heavy stuff. this is a nice break. it's a healthy meal. >> this is a super simple baked halibut dish we make ahe time. >> ther ingredients. it's fantastic. >> halibut is a yummy, flakey fish. we have lemon, olive oil, chives and salt and pepper. this is olive oil and lemon juice. we're going to pour it. put it in a baking dish. season it with salt and pepper. and you bake it for about 12 to 15 minutes in a 400 degree oven. the best way to test to see if they're done is take a fork. if it flakes easily, then you know it's cooked. >> okay. surf. done. >> i like to drizzle it with a little bit of olive oil at the end and sprinkle it with chives for color. take me through the turf. this is dien
